Let us look back on some of the club events this 2015; at One Tree at a Time we planted 150 trees totaling to 485,340, bring us much closer to our 500,000 in just 20 years. This year, we renewed our partnership with the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity who have supported us for 6 years running. The Philippine Horticultural Society had their exhibit at the Highlands Golf Club, showcasing some of the rare and beautiful plants from around the world. We also played host to some of the car clubs here in the Philippines, bringing along with them some of the best luxury cars in the world. And there are also the various golf tournaments held here sush as the 3rd Member’s Quarterly Challenge, the SM Invitational Golf Tournament, and the seventh leg of the WGAP Circuit. The year is about to end but there are more events and promos still happening at the Club. So bring your families and friends here over for the holidays. Celebrate with us the end and coming of another great year!

Christmas is here and the Club is lively as ever with its holiday events happening this month of December. The Highlands String Festival is here to serenade you with classic Christmas songs performed by different musical ensembles. Bring your kids along and let them have a blast at the Christmas Party for Kids. Join us as we welcome the coming of a new year at our rocking New Years Countdown party. We have lots of fun and games and cool prizes in store for the children at the Christmas Party for Kids. With every twist and turn, Kish Javier transforms an ordinary wire into forms of societal tableau based on his imaginary and real life experiences. His household alambre, a chosen medium, explores the material’s malleability in transfiguring straight lines into curves, patterns of weaving and an array of techniques in coiling. His works convey messages of innate joy, love and labor and the transmogrified simplicity of life. His collection will be at The Gallery from February 6 to March 22, 2016.

AN IMITATION OF REALITY | 12.19.15Somnia Collective comes to Tagaytay Highlands with “Mimesis”, an exhibition that provides an imitation of the various concepts of the patterns of play with the purpose to establish a form of connection between the artists and the viewers’ perception and experiences by projecting the exhibition as a creative play similar to that of a science museum. Featuring the works of Austin Suarez, May Caras, Ivy Sinugbuhan, Ian Marinda, Shintaro Lopez, and Martin Yambao, the exhibit runs from December 19 until January 25, 2016 at The Gallery.

When the late National Artist Arch. IP Santos designed the gardens of Tagaytay Highlands, he maintained the natural forms and elements of the surrounding. From large imposing boulders to the delightful mix of flora, indigenous ferns and grass, these were his indelible signature to his tropical designs. Members and guests will truly delight on the perennial blooms of the Club. With the perfect balance of sun, humidity and moisture, every shrub, bush or flower is a visual excitement to behold. Let us have a walk as we explore the beauty of Tagaytay Highlands.

A LANDSCAPE MASTERY

The estate is a sprawling 1,290 hectares. It offers vegetal menagerie of both endemic and rare species. Horticulture enthusiasts will truly find the Club one of a kind. Stroll around the Highlands Golf Club and see the blooms. Jog down the Belle View Drive and witness the assortment of trees, vines and vegetation. Enjoy the lushness of The Gardens after a weekend mass. And if these are not enough, be mesmerized with the organic form of the Country Club Gardens, a spatial continuum perfect for meditation and leisure walks designed by a National Artist.

One can have the best views via the Club’s iconic amenity, the Cable Car system. This Swiss-made passenger cable car is the country’s first and only cable car system. It provides its passengers magnificent views of the Highlands golf course and the countryside. Taking 7 minutes to finish a ride, it transports golfers and their caddies from the 9th hole to the 10th hole and vice versa. One ride can accommodate 12 passengers at 4 passengers per car/cabin. Non-golfers can also take the cable car to go sightseeing and go between the Highlands Golf Club and Country Club.

Or in the afternoon, take the scenic route down to Midlands or up to Highlands by riding the Funicular. Unique to the location, the 48-passenger Swiss- made tram connects the Midlands and Highlands clubhouses with a 4-minute ride along the side of the mountain ridge. It is a slow descent of 250 meters offering a spectacular view of the Lake and Volcano, the Batangas Countryside, and the Midlands and Greenlands surrounded by a dense forest.

and Wild Bird Club of the Philippines

GEOGRAPHICAL WONDER

With constant tree planting efforts and maintenance of the flora, the Club, with the help of the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines, has launched the Bird Watching Program to spread the awareness of balancing the ecosystem. Birds play a major role in propagating seeds the natural way. Their existence is a testament of a rich food source, undisturbed habitat and a well-preserved ecology. The recently released Field Guide features 21 of the 84 species of bird that were spotted, and identified, residing inside the Club. On its cover is an amazing photograph of not just one but several Philippine (Luzon) Hornbill taken from the ravine behind the Animal Farm.

A DAY OF SNAPSHOTS

Having such picturesque views, GetCre8ive, in cooperation with Tagaytay Highlands, held a photo contest in Tagaytay Highlands entitled “Snapshots”. Contestants spent a day at the Club taking landscape and portrait photos. The photos were then uploaded to GetCre8ive’s Facebook page so that people can “like” the photos and the photos with the most likes wins. There were many contenders, but only a few were strong enough to make it to the top. Out of the numerous entries submitted, 20 of the the best and most liked photos were selected, which came from Christopher Sambo, Kathleen Lungub, and Alan Logina. Ultimately, it was Kathleen Lungub who was declared the winner.

Yuletide GetawayThe holiday season is the best time to relax and spend lots of quality time with loved ones. Why not spend those moments at Tagaytay Highlands. At Tagaytay Highlands, we have a lot of fun activities and exciting events that you and your family will definitely enjoy and remember.

Have a day of complete pampering over at The Spa & Lodge through its various massages available and the salon. Wake up to the sight of the hauntingly beautiful fog as it envelops the entire Club. Start the morning right with a cool, early morning jog around the Club, maybe a few laps at the Country Club pool, or perhaps a more intense workout with a friendly game of tennis. Challenge your friends and go on a flight at the Midlands golf course or if you guys feel lucky enough, brave the

ever-so-challenging Highlands golf course. All those activities would have surely made you and your family famished so engorge yourselves on exquisite Asian fare at the Highlands China Palace. For a laidback afternoon, take a scenic ride at the Cable Car and marvel at the spectacular view of the Highlands golf course and the countryside or listen to the performances of different string ensembles at the Highlands Golf Club. Come evening, why not invite Santa over and surprise your family with gifts and treats. When Christmas finally arrives, head over to the Holy Family Chapel with your family and together offer up a prayer of thanksgiving for the year that has passed. And just hours before the year ends, join the rest of the members at the Club’s hip and swinging New Years Countdown party as we dance to the music by Route 70 band, feast on international cuisine, and get mesmerized by the awesome fireworks display.

So plan your holiday vacation now and have it at Tagaytay Highlands where every event is fun and exciting, and any moment is every bit magical.

RENOVATIONS

18 | HIGHLANDS VIEW

The Club is constantly revamping and updating its facilities in its never-ending desire to provide world-class amenities and services to its members and guests.

Early this year, The Spa & Lodge underwent renovations with the redesign of its suites and the Great Room, as well as minor exterior renovations. The Highlander Steakhouse also had minor renovation, mostly improving its aesthetics. At the Sports Center, part of the second phase of its remodeling operation is the renovation of the Sports Veranda, Fitness Gym, the gallery area, and the Bowling Alley, which were finished during the first half of this year. Also part of the operation is the newly-refurbished game room, lap pool, basketball court, and badminton court. The former Geraldine’s and the Cinema has been refurbished into the new Tagaytay Highlands Conference Center, which has a meeting room and a mini auditorium facility for small to medium size conferences.

The Club will continue to improve its amenities and service so that our members and guests will always get the best of luxury mountain resort living.

Families and friends gather every weekend at the Highlands Golfers Lounge to feast on these two club favorites. It is in the broth! The Classic Highlands Bulalo is filled with natural beefy goodness of shanks and marrow. A day in Tagaytay will not be complete without sipping this hot soup to match the cool weather. With the freshest greens, beans and corn, this makes the bulalo a power dish.

Another favorite is the hearty Kare-Kare. The rich peanut stew of ox tripe and tail has its origins in Pampanga but soon adopted into the compendium of Filipina Cocina. The thick nutty sauce envelops all its contents. Vigorous amount of veggies make the dish substantially filling and healthy. Watch out for the extra servings of rice. It can be tempting.

Journey down to the Midlands Golfers Lounge and indulge in Tagaytay Highland’s best Jumbo Boneless Bangus and Crispy Pata. This giant milkfish can satisfy the comfort food cravings of up to six persons. Savory onion sauce makes the dish sizzle on a hot plate. Just a whiff will truly whet one’s appetite.

Pair it up with the deep-fried leg-knuckles. It has been a club favorite since it opened its doors two decades ago. But what makes it so special? Start with the delectable crackling skin and savor every beautiful crunch. But note that beauty is only skin deep. Try the succulent meat and softened ligaments matched with the palate-tingling sauce of vinegar, soy, onion, and chili. Tendered through boiling, marinating and deep frying, secret natural flavors are added to lock in the goodness. For most of us, this is sheer joy and even heaven for the balikbayans.

The Highlands China Palace is a destination for authentic Cantonese cuisine. Chef Wong recommends this season a few of his signature dishes at the Winter Garden. Soy Duck with Tofu is a perfect fare to celebrate any family luncheons. The quintessential duck prepared, marinated and served the traditional way, is always crisp to the skin and succulently flavored to the core. Tofu is an essential source of iron, calcium and amino acids highly beneficial in the diet. Also try the Three Kinds of Meat with Seaweeds or the Broccoli Flower with Two Kinds of Mushroom in Crab Meat Sauce where earthy and oceanic flavors come alive. This special vegetable dish of crisp broccoli heads mixed with fresh mushrooms are highlighted with light crab meat and essence flavors. Both dishes are rich in antioxidants and known to improve digestion and immune system, it is surely a new, healthier option to your imperial feast.

For booking and inquiries, please call Golf Services at (0917) 886-5226.

Smashing its way into the Midlands Golf Course is the 2015 SM Invitational Golf Tournament, a one-day team golf competition participated by different SM-affiliated companies. Congratulations to the winners, Group C: Wind Residences, Group B: Chateau Residences, Group A: Grass PH 1 Residences, and Over-all Team Champion: SM Cyber West!

Mighty Corporation held its annual WCK Founder’s Cup for the eighth time at Tagaytay Highlands at the Midlands Golf Course. The invitational golf tournament was participated by partners of the company and friends of the Wongchuking family. Present at the event were brothers Alexander and Caesar Wongchuking, WCK Foundation (WCKF) Executive Director and Vice President, respectively, and the Wongchuking matriarch and WCKF Chairman, Mrs. Nelia Wongchuking.

Highlands Golf Course was the battleground in Asian Development Bank’s recent golf tournament. This friendship game aimed to strengthen the bond and working relationship of the company’s employees.

ADB China Cup

Our newest golf course, the Midlands Third Nine is now open! Third Nine is the latest nine-hole addition in the leisure haven. Keen golfers will love playing in the varied terrain that Third Nine possesses, offering the risk and reward strategy that makes it more challenging. Both man-made and natural obstacles, which include deep ravines and bunkers, grassy hollow, tree lines and formidable yet beautiful water features, keep the players on their toes and push them to focus on their game plans.

It was a tough day for the players who participated in the 3rd Members’ Quarterly Golf Challenge last August 8. The fog and rain brought the best out of the players. Bagging the Low Net Championship and the Low Gross Championship titles are the team of Vernon Tejada and Ace Garcia at 58 net, and Milo and Harold Fernandez at 73 gross, respectively.

It was an exciting game day for the participants of the IEE-Mitsubishi Golf Tournament as they took on the challenging Highlands Golf Course. The tournament served as a way for the company officers to take some time off from work as well as a bonding activity. With the distinct sound of its engine of a beast, people can recognize an oncoming sports car from afar and you are sure to see people looking towards when it passes by, marveling in all its automotive beauty. A single sports car can gain that much attention. Imagine what a fleet of sports cars can do especially if all of them are the different models of the Italian luxury sports car, Lamborghini. Last August 8, the Lamborghini Club Philippines traversed winding and steep roads as they drove up to Tagaytay for a breakfast meeting at Tagaytay Highlands. Thirteen different models, including the 2015 Aventador, came roaring down that foggy Saturday morning to the Montana parking lot where they parked the cars side-by-side. Members and guests alike could not help but take a closer look and take a picture or two of these fine pieces of Italian engineering.

It takes a tough machine to endure long drives and climb great heights, and that is exactly what the Nissan Navara is. The Nissan U.N. Avenue, together with Team Navara Philippines, braved highways, the tough climb to Tagaytay, and the rough provincial roads to Cavinti, Laguna for their Navara Fun Run. in Tagaytay Highlands and Cavinti Laguna with Team Navara Philippines.Nissan U.N. Ave., Manila, under the leadership of its principal Mr. Leoncio Lei Yee Jr.,

They did not just arrived in style, they arrived in class, in German automotive-class. The PLDT SME Nation went out on a fun ride and headed off to Tagaytay Highlands for a breakfast meeting. But the fun was not in the drive they had but in the cars they drove. Nothing says style and class like driving a luxury car especially if it is the German-made luxury automobile, BMW.

Faithful Servants Series

What makes the Holy Family Chapel so special? For Mrs. Billano…

Mrs. Chats Billano has been one of the very active parishioners of the Holy Family Chapel (HCF). Even though she lives in Manila, she always makes it a habit to go to Tagaytay Highlands, especially on Sundays to attend and help during the Sunday Mass. What she has come to love in attending Mass at HFC is how intimate the setting is. Mass celebrations seem like a small family worshipping together, with most attendees know everyone by name or face. The natural beauty that surrounds the chapel is, for her, very conducive to real worship during mass. As a regular parishioner, she always tries to encourage other people to also serve at the chapel, especially the youth. Like in her younger days, she hopes to instill that joy and yearning to serve the church to this generation’s youth. For her, that would be the greatest help she could give to the church, to inspire the young, to get them involved and actively participate in the church’s activities.

According to homeowners Elmer & Susie Saqui…

After living in the US for most of time together, couple Susie and Elmer Saqui returned to the Philippines in 2007 to retire and live at the Club. Since then, they have become grateful to be part of the Club and to have the gift that is the Holy Family Chapel right at their so-called “backyard”, and have devoted their time and effort to serving the chapel whenever they can.

One of the things they love about the HFC community is the

intimacy that a small but loving Catholic community offers each and every time they gather for worship. Also, they love that they get to meet and greet new faces every week. Devoting time to serve at the HFC has become part of their lifestyle as a couple and with each waking day, together, they continue to strive to make Christ the center of their lives and never forget to thank Him for all the countless blessings they receive every day.

It’s a Herrera Family tradition…

For Mrs. Delilah Herrera and her husband, it was one of the best decisions she made for our family when they purchased their vacation home in Tagaytay Highlands. Their children and grandchildren always have a blast every time they go to the Club because of the many activities their family can enjoy, one of which is going to Mass together and joining the activities of the HFC.

Raised in a traditional religious family, Mrs. Del would diligently attend the daily and Sunday Masses which she has come to enjoy doing at a young age. Going into adulthood and up to now, she tries her very best to strengthen her faith and that of her family’s.

For her, Tagaytay Highlands is not just for vacationing but a family tradition. “The Club and the HFC community are so welcoming to its members and parishioners. The regular Masses and year-round activities keep me grounded to the religious traditions that I grew up with, and happily shares these with her children and grandchildren.”

YOUTH MASS 2015

VISIT OF OUR LADY OF FATIMAEXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION

VIRGINS OF CAVITE

It was a special day for all mothers all over the world as everyone celebrated Mother’s Day on May 10. At the Club, a mass was held with a special blessing for our dear mothers done afterwards. The day also marked the start of the Marian Exhibit, which featured different Marian images from Cavite and was displayed around the Holy family Chapel.

“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” – Mark 10:14. Tagaytay Highlands celebrated the annual Youth Mass at the Holy Family Chapel to encourage the youth to be more active in serving the church and to remind everyone how precious the youths are. Special thanks to the volunteers who served in the mass: Gabriel Marie Munda, Grace Owen, Ryanne Rosales, Miggy Delfino, Donell Dimaunahan, and Derrico Dimaunahan.

On Maundy Thursday, Club members Frank Billano, Elmer Saqui, Cesar Lota, Mike Coo, Sesinando Singson, Cesar Ravanzo, Antonio Herrera, Elmer Lapeña, Greg Chan, Antonio Cuyegkeng, Popoy Del Rosario, and Michael Dwyer played this year’s Twelve Apostles. From Maundy Thursday to Black Saturday, Rev. Fr. Dave Concepcion gave recollections in the morning followed by a “kumpisalang bayan” and a Holy Mass in the afternoon presided by different priests. Club’s youth Bianca Casimiro and Gian Casimiro portrayed angels during the Salubong procession on Black Saturday.

Tagaytay Highlands held a procession in welcoming the National Pilgrim Image of Our Lady of Fatima from the National Shrine in Valenzuela, Manila. Joining the procession were volunteers, club members, and members of the World Association of Fatima from different dioceses. Also, in celebration of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and before the return of the image to her home, the Club held a special mass, celebrated by Rev. Msgr. Bartolome Santos, the Parish Priest of the shrine.

Reverend Father Godwin Tatlonghari held a special seminar for Club members and staff willing to serve as lay ministers. The seminar was attended by Jerry Tiu, Cesar Lota, Phillip Medina, Melanio Estabillo, Marlon dela Cruz, Francis Floren Garcia, Da-nilo Calong, and Mar Dimapilis. Later, they were commissioned to be part of the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at a Mass presided by Rev. Fr. Mike Cron and con-celebrated by Rev. Fr. Tatlonghari.

Last Mother’s Day, the Club showcased 10 Marian images from Cavite as part of the Marian Exhibit with the theme: Virgins of Cavite. Also during the opening of the exhibit, Ms. Teresita Unabia and Mr. Bernardo Sepeda promoted their book “Virgins of Cavite”, published by Cavite Studies Center of the De La Salle University – Dasmariñas.

12 June 2015, Tagaytay City - It was 2:00am and the expressway leading to the south of Manila was damp, cold, dark, and almost empty. A few brave souls spent the holiday discovering the almost unexplored trails of Laguna, Tagaytay, and Batangas through The North Face 100 (TNF 100), an annual trail running event held across different countries in the Pacific, which includes the Philippines.

With hazy vision from sleep, I drove into the parking lot right across the TNF 100 base with a view of the towering Starting and Finish Line with three huge digital clocks, each for the 100km, 50km, and 22km categories, all at 00:00:00. We were around 161 individuals standing in the middle of a large football field waiting to be sent off into the dark to meet who-knows-what. At exactly 5:00 am the word “GO!” echoed from the speakers surrounding the crowd, which suddenly made my sleepy head jolt.

The race started more as a stroll along the hidden treasures of Laguna. The Race Director was indeed successful in making sure that the trails will burn our feet with blisters after they first get wet through rivers of mud and moss, not to mention being under the scorching heat of the sun. Hours passed and morning became noon, by this time the heat has become unbearable. I’ve met a few fellow runners in the Aid Station in Talisay, Batangas. Each of them has different stories of their experiences on the road and in the trail – rich tales fierily told like epics of both defeat and victory. As it turns out, beyond that aid station was the start of the ascent towards Tagaytay Highlands where the next aid station has been set up. After a few hours of traversing narrow pathways of covered forests, I realized that we were actually walking the trails below the Tagaytay Ridge and were on our way up to one of the highest points of the city. Streams of clear water gushed through my feet while being greeted by locals. Birds sang over our heads and lizards scampered across the path welcoming us into their hidden paradise. It was indeed more than a race – it was a once in a lifetime experience.

We found ourselves at the foot of a 100-meter steep wall of manicured bermuda grass glistening under the 3:00 pm sun. A blue rope was stretched down the almost 60-degree incline. It was a tug-of-war, one against gravity, as we one by one pulled ourselves up the wall to get to the top harnessing power from our arms and giving our legs a little break they badly needed. I reached the top of that long uphill slope, which was inside the Tagaytay Highlands compound - the 30th kilometer mark and where primary aid station is found.

words George Ramil Ramosphotographer Viktor Toledo

It was almost 5:00pm; it was getting dark when I entered the forest alone. I entered into a long trail covered with trees and grass. In the dark and a few kilometers to the finish line, after having run for 14 straight hours, I started doubting that I can still make it to the finish line within the 17-hour cut-off. I was already slowing down because of exhaustion, hunger, and thirst and could barely feel my legs. If there is one thing that I have learned in running, it is the attitude of making sure that nothing gets in the way of my journey towards my goal – not even my own self. Finally, after 16 hours from 5:00am, with cameras flashing and people applauding, I crossed the Finish Line of TNF 100 PH 2015, one of the biggest and toughest trail running events in Asia, with only my headlamp, my unbreakable spirit, and myself.
