ZEAL May 2017
Zonta International is a leading global organization of professionals empowering women
worldwide through service and advocacy.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Tonight we welcome many guests - those who have generously donated gifts
for our raffle, Area Director, Pru Blackwell, local politicians and recipients of
donations from our efforts throughout the past year. We trust that you enjoy the
meeting and fellowship with each other.
As a Handover dinner, it is the celebration of our last year’s work – we thank
our office bearers from the last year and introduce those who will fill them for
the coming year. Unfortunately Dot Griggs has had to resign from the Club because of a change
in residence and health. Dot has been a member for 17 years. We thank her for her service and
wish her well for the future. We have also said goodbye to a Past President, Adrienne Williams.
When she was President, Adrienne worked diligently to make members far more aware of
Advocacy and the roles we can undertake to fulfil our objective – To Empower women through
Service and Advocacy. She also made the local politicians very aware of our existence. Members
have worked well throughout the year and have managed to raise more money than last year,
even though we had fewer members. We “handover” the fruits of this labour tonight as well. The
recipients of our donations this year are listed on the back of your program. We look forward to
hearing from the recipients on how they are planning to use these funds.
We know that it is 20 years of making quilts – the first quilt that we made was one that we used to
raffle. I believe that this will be our 19th year of presenting quilts to the Northern Domestic
Violence Service. We trust that many women have found comfort and warmth with our New
Beginnings Quilts. I am unsure of the number of years that we have made the Wee Care Quilts for
children and their families, but think that it may be 17 or 18 years. We have much pleasure in
Handing Over these quilts. I am sure that you will all agree with me that they look stunning.
Tonight we introduce our First Fundraising Project – our Major Raffle. I would particularly like to
thank two of our friends – Christine Houlson for making the superb Japanese Quilt and David
Slater for again making a Doll’s House for us. This is the only raffle that will be sold tonight. I
would also like to thank all the other donors of our Raffle Prizes. Good luck to everyone.
Please enjoy your evening with us.
Yours in Zonta Fellowship,
Liz Bice

Key Facts: • 1 in 3 women and girls will experience physical and/or sexual violence by their
intimate partner in their lifetime • Worldwide, only 1 in 5 parliamentarians are women • Globally, women are paid 10-30% less than men
What is needed? Gender equality will have been achieved when women do not experience violence in their homes, share unpaid care work with men and are represented at the highest levels of business and politics. No country in the world has achieved gender equality, and the pace of change is frustratingly slow. For decades, women have advocated for equal rights – but without the support of men, equality will not be achieved.
UN Women’s HeForShe Campaign asks men and women to take active steps in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment. It is our hope that this year 100,000 Australian men will pledge their support for the campaign and commit to the HeForShe Champion Actions.
The HeForShe Commitment:
I am one of billions who believe that everyone is born free and equal. I will take action against gender bias, discrimination and violence to bring the benefits of equality to us all.
Take the pledge today!
National Committee Australia
Economic Empowerment “Gender inequality undermines economic growth, human development and poverty reduction. The evidence is clear—investing in women is not just the right thing to do— it is the smart thing to do.” – Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hon Julie Bishop MP Investing in women’s economic empowerment sets a direct path towards gender equality, poverty eradication and inclusive economic growth. Women make enormous contributions to economies, whether in businesses, on farms, as entrepreneurs or employees, or by doing unpaid care work at home.
But they also remain disproportionately affected by poverty, discrimination and exploitation because of barriers to education and employment. Gender discrimination means women often end up in insecure, low-wage jobs, and constitute a small minority of those in senior positions.
Guaranteeing equal opportunities for women and men is not just the right thing to do. The empowerment of women and girls is one of the most effective ways to achieve higher economic growth and better living standards for millions of people in developing countries.
The economic empowerment of women is crucial in developing strong societies and strong economies.
UN Women’s Approach UN Women recognises that the economic empowerment of women is crucial to achieving true gender equality. The budgeting and earmarking of aid funding specifically for programs that will benefit women is a proven strategy, and one which UN Women campaigns for in countries around the world.
UN Women supports women in reshaping conditions at both ends of the economic spectrum — from boosting women’s participation in economic policy-making to supporting efforts to provide women with practical skills needed for securing sustainable livelihoods.
CONSIDER THE FACTS
70% of the people in the world living in poverty are women 64% of the world’s illiterate adult population are women 90% of women's income is reinvested back into the household, whereas men reinvest only 30 to 40% When women have more influence over economic decisions, their families allocate more income to food, health, education, children’s clothing and children's nutrition
OBJECTS OF ZONTA INTERNATIONAL
• To improve the legal, political, economic, educational, health and professional status of
women at the global and local level through service and advocacy.
• To work for the advancement of understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of members in business and the professions.
• To promote justice and universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
• To be united internationally to foster high ethical standards, to implement service programs, and to provide mutual support and fellowship for members who serve their communities, their nations, and the world.
Wherever your country of birth, whatever your faith or creed, give thanks for the meal we share
tonight in Zonta fellowship. But remember too those who have had no food today; not with
guilt that we have so much, but with hope that through Zonta service they too may come
to share the same in peace and harmony.
