In this, my first year as Director of Congregational Life, I spent time with both Chizuk Amuno’s Sisterhood and Brotherhood. I attended board
meetings and events, and I engaged their leadership in conversation. Here is what I learned.
The board of our Sisterhood is composed of twenty-five women who care deeply about this place. These are talented women who take their responsibilities very seriously. They talk about the importance of Jewish education, the welfare of the congregation and how to build community. They also reflect Jewish values in all that they do. Their events, which appeal to women of all ages, have both social and educational components. Central to their mission is Sisterhood’s support of the Torah Fund of Women’s League, which sustains Conservative Judaism through financial assistance to the Jewish Theological Seminary in NYC, the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in LA, and the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. This year, the Sisterhood was proud to present the congregation with beautiful, new china and flatware.
And our children benefit from Sisterhood fundraising, including the Judaica Shop. Thousands of Sisterhood dollars every year go to our schools for educational enrichment.
The Brotherhood board meets monthly to plan social, religious, cultural and athletic programs. They, too, are deeply concerned with the welfare of our Jewish
community. The board represents a wide-range of ages and talents. These are very generous, caring men who are committed to Chizuk Amuno, and they devote countless hours to supporting its programs.
Brotherhood members enjoy sporting events, breakfast programs with outstanding speakers, and social events featuring great food. They take pride in supporting our daily minyan and strengthening the congregation’s religious programming. The Congregational Second Seder is a Brotherhood project. There is a special affinity for Camp Ramah, the camping movement of Conservative Judaism, and a commitment to provide scholarship dollars to Ramah campers. The camaraderie among these men is remarkable!
We at Chizuk Amuno are truly blessed with wonderful affiliates. You can meet their members at Shabbat services every week. They are our allies in building a Jewish community of which we can all be proud.

New at Chizuk Amuno, a contemporary Friday night service with guitar music. Come and enjoy an upbeat Shabbat celebration of
prayer, song, and insight. Using a special prayer book that includes Hebrew transliteration and English reflection, everyone is welcome to join in New Shabbat with Rabbi Shulman, Hazzan Perlman, and Leslie Pomerantz.
New Shabbat meets again June 14After studying the question of playing instruments on Shabbat with Rabbi Shulman, last fall our congregation’s Ritual Committee recommended, and our Board of Trustees approved, playing instrumental music on Shabbat in prayer services created for this purpose. For those of us who wish to participate, New Shabbat is the first setting in which a musical instrument will enrich our prayer experience at Chizuk Amuno.

Gemilut Hasadim Activities at Chizuk AmunoAdopt-A-Road Chizuk Amuno Brotherhood performs the mitzvah of shmirat adamah, protecting the earth, by cleaning a segment of Greenspring Avenue on Sunday, June 2 (rain date: June 9). Meet us at 9 a.m. by the front office. All supplies will be provided. All are welcome. To volunteer, please call Irwin Golob at 410/560-7422.
Jared Scott Levy Memorial Garden We are grateful to master gardener, Allen Brown, for his leadership, expertise, and dedication. The garden truly looks beautiful and is a special space for study, prayer, socializing, and reflection. Hackerman Patz House Hackerman Patz House is a home away from home for patients and their families who are receiving treatment at Sinai Hospital.

NEW!! Let’s Get Together Our first activity with Special Connections, a group for Jewish adults with developmental disabilities, was enjoyable and meaningful. All present participated in card-making for our returning military through Operation Welcome Home. Be on the lookout for more scheduled activities with this group.
Operation Welcome Home Maryland Join us as we welcome home our troops from military service overseas. Volunteers will meet at BWI airport and help pack goodie bags, welcome and cheer for soldiers, and thank them for their service. Dates are set one to three weeks in advance of the incoming flights. If you would like to be informed of these welcoming opportunities contact Rabbi Wechsler, [email protected]. This project is suitable for adults and children of all ages. Paul’s Place Women’s Listening Circle Help a listening circle for women at Paul’s Place’s. The circle is facilitated by Barbara Grochal and will be held Tuesday, July 9 from 1-2 p.m. Participants share experiences, listen to one another, and build community in an atmosphere of mutual respect. Ronald McDonald House Join us as we cook and serve dinners at Ronald McDonald House for families with seriously ill children. The families look forward to home cooked meals to ease the strain and pressure that come with seeking medical treatment far from home. Upcoming dates for dinner are Wednesdays, May 29, July 10, and Thursday, August 8. Contact Miriam Foss to volunteer.

Transportation Service on Shabbat Need a ride to shul on Shabbat mornings? Rides for members who no longer drive can be arranged on a week-by-week basis. Just call Miriam Foss by Monday or Tuesday of the week you want to attend services.

Pre-Passover Food Drive Brings in Record DonationsThanks to the entire congregation for the strong response to the Pre-Passover Food Drive. We received many more donations than usual and were able to give van loads of food to our partners at C.A.R.E.S Food Pantry, Manna House, and Our Daily Bread. Community food pantries are very low and the much needed contributions were enthusiastically and gratefully received. Monetary donations were sent to Jewish Community Services Community Food Fund.

Chizuk Amuno NostalgiaThe recently published book Reservoir Hill includes photos of Chizuk Amuno at Eutaw Place, along with photos of many congregants of the time. A book signing will take place at Beth Am Synagogue on Sunday, May 19 at 4:30 p.m. and will include opportunities for former members and residents of the neighborhood to share memories. In addition to a nostalgic visit to the Chizuk Amuno of the early 20th century, there will be the Art Outside Free Art Festival at Druid Park Lake (11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) and a walking tour of the neighborhood (2-4 p.m.).

Schedule of Shabbat ServicesEach Friday evening and Shabbat morning we enjoy celebration, prayer, and Torah study with Rabbi Ronald Shulman, Rabbi Deborah Wechsler, Hazzan Emanuel Perlman, and our synagogue community.
This schedule indicates the weeks when our Chizuk Amuno Choir participates in services, as well as study themes, or other service features including family and Shabbat Yahad activities. Join with us to express yourself in the presence of God, to nurture your soul, and to connect your life with the life of our synagogue family.
Babysitting is available beginning at 9:15 a.m. every Shabbat, except holiday weekends.

The Amuno MinyanShabbat Prayer, Torah DiscussionMay 18, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Enjoyed by many, the Amuno Minyan is our lay-led participatory Shabbat morning service, a more intimate and informal setting for prayer and Torah study.

Have You Lost Your Tallit? Your Tefillin?There have been times after services when a congregant has accidentally left his/her tallit or tefillin bag at shul. We have quite a collection now. If you have been looking for yours, please call the synagogue office and inquire about our Lost and Found.

Joining in Sisterhood
One of my greatest joys is to share all
the good works of Chizuk Amuno Sisterhood. As our Chizuk Amuno community continues to grow, Sisterhood has maintained its role by offering a variety of programming for women of all ages. In this year alone, Sisterhood has participated in the Mosaic Project and Ronald McDonald House, created personal kippot, decorated the bimah for Sukkot, designed and purchased new china and flatware for the congregation, had our annual Askin Book Review, conducted our annual Sisterhood Shabbat service, and enjoyed an entertaining morning on how to “improve our look with makeup.”
Sisterhood contributed to Women’s League’s Torah Fund campaign and the “Value Our Vets” special community service project for the Women’s League convention. We maintain our ongoing financial support of Chizuk Amuno’s schools and educational programs. We continue to recycle and e-cycle to help green our lives. We join the Baltimore Conservative Sisterhoods for a joint dinner to proudly share our commitment to our Movement.

Adults and Children of All Ages Celebrate Torah on ShavuotOn Shavuot we imagine ourselves at Mt. Sinai and rejoice in the gift of Torah. To honor our holiday’s spirit, our Shavuot Festival Morning Service on Tuesday, May 15 will include opportunities for everyone, from our youngest to our oldest, to sit with each other and study the Ten Commandments.
At 10 a.m., after Shaharit – our morning service – we’ll leave the Sanctuary and sit together around Torah study tables in the Krieger Auditorium. Over coffee and nosh, our rabbis will guide us as we dialogue with study partners and explore the Ten Commandments.
While we study, our children will gather for their own holiday program and prepare to join us in the Sanctuary for a special ceremony.
At 10: 30 a.m., following our learning we’ll return to the Sanctuary to receive and read Torah. Our children will join us when we read the Ten Commandments from the Torah scroll celebrating their growth and freshness by bringing bikkurim – greens and fruits – to decorate the bimah.
