Share what this experience was and what made it memorable. This was the assignment given recently to a group at the synagogue and the responses were as varied as they were touching. Several spoke of the b’nei mitzvah of their children and how that process connected them intimately to Chizuk. Others spoke of community response during illness and death and how that made them feel embraced and immersed in the congregation. One spoke of the Torah writing project and the personal and touching nature of that experience; and still another told of their time in the family service and the sheer joy of splitting the Red Sea and being enveloped in a loving congregation of children and parents. It was a beautiful tapestry of what Chizuk Amuno is to many of us and what it could be to others of us. I left that group with a sense of gratitude for the ways that Chizuk is actively present in the lives of those who enter our doors. I also left with an appreciation for the many opportunities we have to touch the lives of others in profound ways and a desire to find more such opportunities to welcome others. Touching Your Livesby Rabbi Debi WechslerTake a moment and think about one personal experience that was important to you in your engagement with Chizuk

Amuno. Share what this experience was and what made it memorable.

This was the assignment given recently to a group at the synagogue and the responses were as varied as they were touching. Several spoke of the b’nei mitzvah of their children and how that process connected them intimately to Chizuk. Others spoke

of community response during illness and death and how that made them feel embraced and immersed in the congregation.

I left that group with a sense of gratitude for the ways that Chizuk is

actively present in the lives of those who enter our doors. I also left with an appreciation for the many opportunities we have to touch the lives of others in profound ways and a desire to find more such opportunities to welcome others.

I would very much like to hear about a personal experience that was important to you in your engagement with Chizuk Amuno. Please visit our website www.chizukamuno.org where you will see that I have cross posted this onto a blog, and share your experience with Chizuk and what made it memorable.

Ask the RabbiShabbat, March 28 • 12:30 p.m.with Rabbi Ron Shulman

One of my favorite hours of the year comes on Yom Kippur afternoon. We meet in the Sanctuary for a question and answer session. You ask me about theology, Jewish tradition and customs, current events, and any other pertinent questions you want to “Ask the Rabbi.” For some of

you, it’s try to stump the rabbi! I have to think “standing on one foot.” Your questions are always better than my answers, but I have the most fun.

During our discussion this past Yom Kippur, a number of you asked if we could do this twice a year, rather than once. Thank you! The mid-point in the year is Shabbat HaGadol, the Saturday before we celebrate Passover. Seems like exactly the right time to hold an “Ask the Rabbi” session.

So, on this Shabbat HaGadol, we will meet in the Hoffberger Chapel and spend an hour in question and answer together. Though I always try to anticipate the questions, the ones I don’t expect produce the most interesting discussion. Please join me – ask the questions you wonder about that I might be able to help you answer.

Passover @ Chizuk Amuno

Passover is a holiday of hope, renewal, and life. Nature’s spring is the backdrop for our people’s Exodus story of

beginnings and freedom. Passover’s message and mood encourage and inspire us. As spring begins, Passover reminds us. We are keepers of a vision, advocates for redemption. Celebrating Pesah by gathering with family and friends around our seder tables and joining in community, we attach our personal lives and concerns to the grand and potent moral principles for which God brought our ancestors out of Egypt. Passover Festival Morning Services are warm and special times. We invite you to join the meaning, spirit and beauty of celebrating Passover with your synagogue family. On April 4, 5, 10, and 11 our Festival Services begin at 9:15 a.m. In prayer, celebration and reflection, we’ll rejoice in the purpose and joy of Passover. During our service on Shabbat, April 11, we recite Yizkor Memorial Prayers.

During our Festival Morning Services, we’ll celebrate freedom and the personal meanings we find in Passover. We’ll hear personal stories about seder memories and kosher for Passover food. We’ll invite for Torah honors synagogue friends who have experienced personal redemptions this year or, as we count the Omer, who anticipate significant moments in the coming weeks and, sadly, who are observing their first Yizkor Service in memory of a loved one as Passover concludes. Modern poetry will enhance the Psalms we recite and special kavanot, reflections, will introduce moments of prayer. We look forward to lovely and meaningful services throughout Pesah!

Reading Partners – Supporting Young Students, Rewarding Experiences for Volunteersby David Spitz

When I made the decision to retire in May, after 37 years as a Respiratory Therapist, I knew that I wanted to volunteer in some capacity with children in Baltimore City. The question was, “How do I get started?” The answer, of course, was Google, where searching for volunteer opportunities in the city school system brought up Reading Partners. After reading through their website I sent an e-mail and, in no time, received an enthusiastic response. In September I began tutoring 3rd grade reading at Fallstaff Elementary School. Having no formal experience I was a bit nervous, but I learned on my initial site visit that Reading Partners had developed a very tight curriculum that even a novice like myself could follow, one that has proven to be quite effective. I work with my student, Miguel, twice weekly and every session is a new and exciting experience for me! Witnessing the enthusiasm and love for learning by Miguel and the other children in the program is exactly the reward I was hoping for during my retirement. The children love the one-on-one attention and encouragement they receive and, thus, they are ready to work hard, and laugh a lot. These are wonderful children who want the same out of life as our kids, and benefit greatly from just a little extra TLC. As of this year Reading Partners is functioning in nine city schools; the hope is that the number of schools benefitting from this program will increase to 12-16 schools next year. Of course, with more schools comes the increased need for many more volunteers. I highly recommend that members of our community – those who wish to help young children from underprivileged communities, our neighbors – become positive role models with Reading Partners. To learn more about Reading Partners, you can e-mail [email protected] or visit their website, www.readingpartners.org/baltimore.

Chizuk Amuno plans to participate with Reading Partners for the next school year as one of their new Gemilut Hasadim initiatives. Please watch for details in future issues of HaHodesh or the Gemilut Hasadim@Chizuk Amuno monthly e-mail.

Help Chizuk Amuno & the EarthThank you to all the congregants who have contributed to our ABITIBI program, which helps the environment, and has also raised funds for the congregation and our schools. Please continue to bring your paper for recycling to the bin on the North side (the preschool side) of the building. Please note: The ABITIBI is for paper only. Cardboard must be placed in the bins for corrugated. Also, trash drop-off is not permissible at any time in any of our bins. Placing cardboard in the ABITIBI or trash in any of our bins results in complications and extra costs to Chizuk Amuno. Thank you, again, for your continuing support of our ABITIBI program.

613 & Me: Preparing for Bar and Bat Mitzvah

On a Shabbat morning early in January in the Hoffberger Chapel, parents of sixth graders were asked to imagine

what it might be like to see their children up on the bimah as they became b’nei mitzvah. Some saw in their children the passage of time from when they were infants and received their Hebrew names on the bimah, others saw in their children themselves and their own b’nei mitzvah.

Becoming bar and bat mitzvah doesn’t just happen in a day at Chizuk Amuno. It is a multi-year process that begins during your child’s fourth or fifth grade school year. This provides layers of meaning as Chizuk Amuno becomes more of a spiritual home for all members of your family. One of those layers was on January 10 when Hazzan Perlman, Rabbi Seltzer, Debby Hellman, and our amazing madrikhim (tutors) answered questions, pointed out the different parts of the Shabbat morning service, and celebrated Shabbat with our 613 & Me families.

The next step towards the 613 mitzvot of b’nei mitzvah is our upcoming 613 & Me program on Friday, March 27. We look forward to having our Chizuk Amuno sixth graders and their parents join us for services, dinner, and the b’nei mitzvah edition of the Newlywed Game.

Community or Communities? The American Jewish Population’s Continual Search for UnityA Lecture Presentation by Dr. Valerie ThalerWednesday, March 11 7:30 p.m.You’ve probably heard the phrase, “two Jews, three opinions” to describe the centrality of debate and argument to Jewish culture. But that doesn’t mean that American Jews have not made earnest attempts to act as “one people,” and think of themselves as a unified group. In this talk, we will explore several moments in American Jewish history in which American Jews sought to speak with one voice, and why that goal proved so elusive regardless of the circumstances. No fee.

Follow Up Study SessionsWednesdays, March 18, 25; April 15, 22; 7:30 p.m.In these four sessions we’ll look at each of these “one people moments” in more detail, with the help of primary and secondary documents. We look forward to welcoming you to these study sessions and learning with you. No fee. To register, please contact the Stulman Center office, ext. 288 or [email protected].

How do you live in “the grey?” Who do you understand to be author of the Torah? Why do you think the Torah was given in the wilderness? How do you wrestle with challenging texts? These were just a few of the intriguing questions posed to Rabbi

Etan Mintz, Rabbi John Franken, and our own Rabbi Debi Wechsler during last month’s Texting Together text study and discussion. The rabbis came together to share their own religious backgrounds and their understanding of the relationship between God and the Jewish people and refracted through the giving of the Torah at Sinai. Participants remarked on how the rabbis arrived at similar places from, in some cases, very different religious milieus and also how a shared love of Torah and the Jewish people was so strongly articulated. We are grateful to Rabbis Franken and Mintz for sharing their learning and perspectives with us and look forward to other opportunities for shared study and fellowship.

Celebrating Our Third Grade StarsOn Saturday evening, January 31, as three stars appeared in the sky, our Rosenbloom Religious School third graders blew their families and teachers away when they beautifully led the Havdalah prayer. They filled the cups they had decorated with grape juice and the spice boxes they had made with sweet cloves, and gathered around the

tables with their proud families. After months spent practicing the blessings and learning

about the larger concepts behind the Havdalah service, the students led the prayer with excitement and confidence. This is how they summed up their most special moment of the program:

“Smelling the spices because they smell so good.”“Lighting the candle – it was fun!”“Drinking my grape juice because I love grape juice.” “Holding the candle because my dad helped me.” “Feeling proud, good, and happy.” “When my mom looked at me so proud.”Of course, the night would not be complete without

celebrating their achievements, so we finished off the evening with ice cream and some fun time in the gym. We look forward to watching our amazing third graders continue to learn and grow together!

Chizuk Amuno Upgrades Computer SystemsThank You in Advance for Your Help and PatienceIn order to better serve our members, provide easier to read synagogue and school billing statements, assist the staff and lay leaders in better using member information, and to bring our synagogue technology into the 21st century, we are in the midst of installing and converting to new membership management and accounting software.

As with many large computer data conversions, there will undoubtedly be some member information that needs correcting, some regular tasks such as yahrzeit notices or contribution acknowledgments may temporarily be delayed, and the staff may need a moment longer to respond to questions and requests as we learn the new software. Every household will receive a family information sheet from our new database in order to verify and update your family information. Thank you in advance for your understanding and patience during this large technology upgrade.

New Visitor WiFi Introduced, Thanks to Sisterhood and KSDSWe are pleased to announce that we have upgraded and expanded our public WiFi reception throughout the entire building. Thanks to a generous grant from the Chizuk Amuno Sisterhood and major funding by the Krieger Schechter Day School, every area within the synagogue is now WiFi accessible.

This expanded capability will enable access to the internet while waiting for students, sitting in class, at meetings, or delivering a presentation. WiFi will be expanded in our schools and classrooms. Thanks to a grant from the Goldsmith Foundation, our Goldsmith Early Childhood Education Center has purchased iPads for every classroom to be used to enhance our curriculum; i.e., photographing the children, and documenting activities around the building and on the playground. We will easily be able to share pictures and projects with our families and look forward to continuing to learn and grow with our new technology.

In KSDS, our expanded WiFi will provide a stronger backbone in which to build our Laptop of Choice program at the middle school level and to become a 1-1 K-8 school. The expanded use of building-wide WiFi is already being used in our Rosenbloom Religious School and Netivon High School programs, at board meetings, and in staff professional development workshops.

Thank you in advance for for your patience during any hiccups that might occur while we fully test the system. Please feel free to come to the synagogue or school offices to obtain the new access password. Users will be asked to accept the standard usage and liability language.

Our thanks to the KSDS Technology Committee, Kathy Krcma, and Andy Sibiya, along with Chizuk Amuno Sisterhood and KSDS for linking our congregations and schools to the rest of the world.

New Visitor Check-in ProcedureWe welcome hundreds of visitors to our building on a daily basis. In order to ensure the safety of our children, members, and guests, we have implemented new visitor procedures. Thank you for your patience and help throughout the implementation process.• All visitors must present a valid driver’s license or

identification card to be scanned for a visitor badge• School parents and synagogue members who visit the

building frequently may retain their visitor badge (badge holders will be provided)

Tzedakah @ Chizuk Amuno

Many times during the year members and friends tell us that they would like to contribute something to our congregation in honor or memory of a loved one or to mark a special occasion. We are often asked what we may need and what would enhance one of our schools, programs, our services, or our programs. Sometimes, our synagogue budget alone cannot provide for all of our wishes and needs, large and small.

The following list offers some suggestions compiled by our schools and leadership. We are also happy for you to suggest additional, creative ways to enhance our congregation and community. Wish List contributors will be recognized in the HaHodesh ~ This Month at Chizuk Amuno. To contribute something on our Wish List, please contact Beth Goldsmith or Glenn Easton at the synagogue.
