Cinema Under the StarsWednesday, August 21, 8 p.m. Plan to join us on when we’ll enjoy our annual movie event in the Courtyard. (Rain date is August 22.) Details on the movie will follow. Check the Chizuk Amuno website. Mark your calendars and set your reminders!

Join us for Summer Shul at Chizuk Amuno!Shabbat Mornings, 9:15 a.m. July 6, 13, 20, 27 This year, Summer Shul celebrates Israel at 65! We’ll capture the spirit of Shabbat Israeli style, hear thoughts about Israel each week, and add Israeli song to our Shabbat celebration.

Summer Shul will be held in the Krieger Auditorium, creating an intimate and relaxed prayer environment. Synagogue members lead our services, read Torah, and deliver Divrei Torah, supported by Rabbis Shulman and Wechsler, and Hazzan Perlman and Dr. Shualy.

During Summer Shul everyone is encouraged to dress casually and appropriately, for Shabbat Services. Families and friends, adults and children of all ages are most welcome to share in the warm mood of Summer Shul.

Observing Tishah B’Av - The Ninth of Av We will observe Tishah B’Av with prayer and reflection on Monday evening, July 15 at 8:30 p.m. During the Ma’ariv Service for Tishah B’Av we will recite the Bible’s Book of Lamentations, Eikhah.

Tishah B’Av is our calendar’s date of mourning. On the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av we recall tragic events in Jewish history whose legacy have shaped our identity and values. Foremost among the events we remember are the destructions of the two Temples in Jerusalem. The Babylonians destroyed the First Temple in the year 586 BCE. The Romans destroyed the Second Temple in 70 CE.

We will also gather in observance of Tishah B’Av on Tuesday morning, July 16 at 7 a.m. A special Minhah service will be held at 1 p.m. At this afternoon service we will wear our Tallit and Tefillin, ritual symbols that we will not use during our Shaharit service in expression of our mourning. Tishah B’Av is a full or partial day of fasting and introspection observed with emotion as we transform trauma into wisdom through ritual.

A s stated in Chizuk Amuno’s Avodah Vision

Statement: Music is central to our services.

This past year, I have served as chair of the Ritual Committee. One of our tasks was to engage in halakhic study and discussion of the use of musical instruments in worship on Shabbat and hagim. Our new policy (endorsed by the Board of Trustees in September 2012) is to provide options for those whose worship experience might be enriched by musical instruments, while continuing to allow congregants who are not comfortable with musical instruments to continue to enjoy the traditional worship experiences.

Last month we introduced our first “New Shabbat” Friday evening service. With more than 130 in attendance, Rabbi Shulman led the service and Hazzan Perlman and Leslie Pomerantz led the singing, with Leslie playing guitar. The ruah, spirit, carried us all through the evening experience as we sang prayers as a community. Everyone participated as we learned new melodies and connected in ways many have not experienced before at Chizuk Amuno. We celebrated Shabbat with a new and refreshed intent. The addition of guitar to voice enhanced the warmth of the evening.

I am delighted to have played a role in this new development at Chizuk Amuno and hope you join us as we create this ruah together at our next New Shabbat service on Friday evening, June 14 at 7:15 p.m., and once again on August 9. After the High Holy Days, New Shabbat will become a regular monthly feature on our synagogue calendar.

Stay tuned for additional announcements and reminders, and please let me know what we can do to make the worship experience at Chizuk Amuno even more meaningful for you and your family.

See you on June 14, Andy Miller
