both local and international.
• On-going effort in promotion and preparation of IOHA 2012 in
Malaysia.
• Continued collaboration with British Occupational Safety and
Health (BOSH) in bringing IH training modules to Malaysia.
• DOSH continued support to MIHA training programmes by
sending their officers to MIHA training workshop for example
the Advanced Indoor Air Quality and Dermal Exposure course.
• Received continuous funding from SOCSO and will be
collaborating with SOCSO on the Enhancement of IH Practices
in Small and Medium Enterprise.
• Finalisation plans with several higher learning institutions on
the development of the Diploma and Master program in

Conference key focus areas:
Green Chemistry & Strategic Roles of IH!
The principles of green chemistry include the need to design safer
chemicals and products. This benign-by-design approach incorporates
considerations of chemicals’ effects on public health and the environment.
IH will have a role in helping business understand the potential for
reducing or eliminating worker exposures, improving product stewardship
and innovation, and accelerating competitive advantag
Strengthening of OSHA
The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) continues to
strengthen the IH practices in the new initiatives after 40 years of
implementation. Among others, they are looking at reviewing various
standards & legislation and be a “compliance assistance” rather than
enforcement agency.
Latest on nano NIOSH shares several studies conducted on several approaches to safe
nanotechnology. The research focuses on the types of industry utilizing
nanomaterials, profiling the different types of nanometerials, developing
relevant occupational exposure limits, determining exposure levels to
nanomaterials in primary and secondary users and approaches to control
the exposure. Various research is also on
effects arising from the exposures.
IH in Action - Deepwater Horizon
Various stakeholders including BP, OSHA, NIOSH, US Coast Guard etc
shared their roles and what was done in response to one of the world’s
horrendous incidents. Something that we can learn
was conducted during the response. Tasks such as oil skimming, dispersant
operations, booming, in-situ burning were evaluated exposure monitoring

The Conference kicked off with an inspiring talk by Mr. Gene Kranz, NASA Flight
Control Director and Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipient on “Failure is not an
option”. Kranz shared the challenges in bringing down the Apollo 13 spacecraft a
crew of 3 astronauts back to earth on 17 April 1970, after its oxygen system failed.
Even though not directly related to IH, his speech inspires thousands of Hygienists that
workers’ exposure is our core business.
