Fifth Sunday of Easter THE WAY

In today’ gospel, we sense the apostles' trepidation as they begin to realize that the Lord would soon be leaving them. In their fear, they ask, "Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?" (John 14:5). Jesus tells them that he is the way. The Easter season has been a time of growing in Easter faith so that we, too, may learn to know that Jesus is the way. We can take comfort in the Lord's promise that he is going to his Father's house to prepare a place for us, his chosen people who have been called out of darkness into God's wonderful light. As the paschal candle continues to burn during this holy season, let us re-member that in baptism we were given the light of Christ. With Christ our light as the beacon lighting our way, let us march toward the glory of Pentecost.

TODAY'S READINGS First Reading -- To meet their growing needs, the community chooses seven repu-table men to serve the new Greek believers (Acts 6:1-7). Psalm -- Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (Psalm 33). Second Reading -- We, like living stones, let ourselves be built into a spiritual house (1 Peter 2:4-9). Gospel -- "Show us the Father," Philip asks Jesus. To which Jesus replies: "Whoever sees me, sees the Father" (John 14:1-12).

In a 2015 homily on Mary, Pope Francis said, “A society without moth-

ers would be a society that has lost its heart, lost the ‘feel of home.’ Be-

cause mothers, even at the worst of times, are capable of testifying to

tenderness, unconditional self-sacrifice, and the strength of hope. Where

there is a mother, there is unity, there is belonging.” This year we honor

these generous, loving women on Sunday, May 14th.

The Eucharist: The Mass, a Sending Forth

In these weeks of May, a lot of parishes around the world are hosting first communion celebrations for the chil-dren. The traditional name for the Eucharistic celebration, at least in the Roman Catholic tradition, is the Mass. I al-ways ask our first communion children the root meaning of the word Mass. As expected, their answers can range from anything to anything! The word mass itself is taken from the last line of the old Tridentine (Latin) rite: Ite, misa est—which, translated, literally means: “Go, it has been sent.” Essentially, the Eucharist, or the Mass, is a sending forth—an indispensable element of our Christian faith… Our faith began with a sending forth: Abraham the father of

faith was sent from his father’s country to an unknown land (Gen 12). The Gospels also end with some kind of sending. For example, John 20:21 states: “As the Father sent me, so I send you.” The early disciples of Jesus were sent to proclaim the Gospel. However, we can also safely predict that it was not easy for them to be sent. Any kind of sending presupposes some kind of dying. We are sent, not to impose our identity on others, but to discover who we are with and for the others. And that may mean a “dying” to who we are. The first mission of the early Church (i.e., the mission of the early disciples of Jesus) was one to proclaim the Gospel to the Gentiles. In that pro-cess, the early disciples painfully discovered the loss of their own identity that was solely Jewish. As the first follow-ers of Jesus slowly became “Christians,” they slowly experienced the death of their privileged Israelite heritage as the Church opened itself to Gentile (non-Jew) believers. We take things for granted these days: but we cannot even imagine the magnitude and the seriousness of the situation back in the early Church between Jewish and Gentile Christians. Nevertheless, the point here is that any sending is difficult. The apostles of Jesus were tempted just to stay in Jerusalem. That would have been a lot more comfortable. But the Lord sent them forth. Despite whatever hesita-tions they might have had, they did go. Traditions tell us that they all went on their separate ways to proclaim the Gospel. Each one of them also met his terrible martyred fate—with the exception of John the Apostle. For exam-ple, Peter was crucified in Rome; Thomas went to India and was martyred there; etc. Any kind of sending, indeed, implies some kind of death, sometimes real death… Coming back to the Mass: as I explain again and again in the children’s first communion celebrations, the word mass is related to the word missionary. Both come from the Latin verb mittere: to send. A missionary is someone who is sent. And when we go to Mass, we do not go to stay at the church, but to be dismissed from it. We go to in order to be sent back out into the world. We are sent out to do the work that Jesus commissioned his followers to do after his Resurrection: to proclaim the Gospel to the world.

Suy Niệm: Trong bài Tin Mừng, Ðức Giêsu nói: "Ta đi dọn chỗ cho các ngươi. Ta sẽ đến và đem các ngươi theo Ta, để Ta ở đâu, các ngươi cũng ở đó. Ðức Giêsu về trời bên Chúa Cha và sẽ đón chúng ta trong ngày cuối đời của mỗi người và nhất là trong ngày Ngài quang lâm. Qua biến cố Phục Sinh, Ðức Giêsu đã mở cho chúng ta con đường đi vào ơn cứu độ và vinh quang với Người. Chúng ta hãy an tâm, tin tưởng và vững lòng đi theo Ðức Giêsu. Cầu Nguyện: Lạy Chúa Giêsu, Chúa muốn rằng Chúa ở đâu, môn đệ của Chúa cũng được ở đó. Lời Chúa đang trấn an mỗi người chúng con vì chúng con tin rằng mình đã được Chúa chuẩn bị chỗ cho chúng con trên nước của Chúa. Ðiều quan trọng là chúng con phải biết tự bảo vệ và giữ lấy địa vị của mình: địa vị làm con Chúa. Xin giúp chúng con luôn sống xứng đáng với tình thương Chúa đã dành cho chúng con. Hương Vị Của Khói Ðể đả phá tính ích kỷ, người Ả Rập thường kể câu chuyện như sau:

Tai một khu phố nọ, có không biết bao nhiêu cửa hàng ăn uống mọc lên. Hương vị bốc lên từ các cửa hàng này thu hút những người giàu lẫn kẻ nghèo. Những người giàu đến đây để thưởng thức những của ngon vật lạ, còn những người nghèo thì chỉ mong ăn được chút cơm thừa canh cặn hay cùng lắm là chỉ để hít thở được hương vị thơm ngon bốc lên từ các nhà bếp...

Một hôm, có một người nghèo mon men đến một cửa hàng. Trên tay anh cầm một ổ bánh mì. Anh người nghèo này có ý nghĩ độc đáo: thay vì chầu chực hưởng phần ăn thừa của thực khách, anh bèn leo lên mái nhà, rồi ngồi cạnh ống khói của nhà bếp. Anh vừa nhai bánh mì vừa hít thở làn khói bốc ra từ nhà bếp, anh nhai ngấu nghiến ổ bánh mì mà tưởng tượng như mình đang thưởng thức những của ngon được dọn trên bàn thượng khách.

Nhưng không may cho anh, vì hôm đó người chủ nhà hàng gặp nhiều rắc rối trong công việc làm ăn cho nên không có được bộ mặt vui tươi cho mấy. Thế là ông sai những người hầu bàn lôi cổ người ăn xin xuống khỏi mái nhà và yêu cầu trả tiền. Ông lý luận với người ăn xin như sau: "Khói bốc ra từ nhà bếp của ta không phải là khói chùa, nhà ngươi đã thưởng thức làn khói đầy hương vị đó, yêu cầu nhà ngươi trả tiền cho ta".

Người ăn xin không chịu trả tiền. Nội vụ đã được đem ra trước tòa án. Quan đầu tỉnh phải nhức đầu vì vụ án này. Ông cho triệu tất các bực thức giả trong toàn tỉnh để giúp ông giải quyết vụ án. Những người này đưa ra hai ý kiến xem ra đều có lý cả: một bên nói rằng khói bốc ra từ cửa hàng, do đó nó là chủ hữu của ông chủ cửa hàng. Những người khác thì cho rằng khói cũng như không khí là của mọi người, thành ra người ăn xin có quyền hưởng mà không phải trả đồng xu nào.

Sau khi đã bàn bạc và cân nhắc, quan đầu tỉnh mới đưa ra phán quyết như sau: "Người nghèo đã hưởng khói mà không đụng đến thức ăn, cho nên anh ta hãy lấy một đồng bạc, ra giữa công viên, gõ đồng bạc vào ghế đá, âm thanh của đồng bạc sẽ lan ra. Người chủ cửa hàng muốn đòi tiền của khói, ông hãy lắng nghe âm thanh ấy".

Người kể câu chuyện ngụ ngôn trên đây có lẽ muốn nói với chúng ta rằng sự ích kỷ không mang lại cho chúng ta một lợi lộc nào.

Nhưng sự ích kỷ không bao giờ mang tính chất trung lập. Nghĩa là khi tôi khép kín tâm hồn, khi tôi chỉ biết nghĩ đến mình, không những tôi làm cho người khác bớt hạnh phúc, mà chính tôi cũng chết đi một phần trong tôi. Tình liên đới không phải là một thứ xa xỉ phẩm được thêm vào tương quan giữa người với người hoặc như một thứ tô điểm phụ thuộc cho nhân cách của tôi, mà là đòi hỏi thiết yếu của ơn gọi làm ngưòi. Tôi càng nên người hơn khi tôi sống cho tha nhân. Tôi càng trở nên phong phú hơn khi tôi trao ban...

EL CAMINO Hoy sentimos la perturbación de los apóstoles cuando empiezan a darse cuenta de que el Señor pronto los dejará. Temerosos preguntan: "Señor, no sabemos a dónde vas ¿cómo podemos saber el camino?" (Juan 14:5). Jesús les dice que él es el camino. El tiempo de Pascua ha sido un tiempo para crecer en la fe pascual para que, así también, nosotros podamos darnos cuenta de que Jesús es el camino. Nos consuela la promesa del Señor de que va a la casa de su Padre a preparar un lugar para nosotros, su pueblo elegido que ha sido llamado de las tinieblas a la luz admira-ble de Dios. Mientras el cirio pascual continúa ardiendo en este tiempo santo, recordemos que en nuestro bautismo nos dieron la luz de Cristo. Con Cristo, nuestra luz como faro iluminando nuestro camino, marchemos hacia la gloria de Pentecostés.

4 YEAR OLDS LEARN ABOUT ABSORPTION IN

TK SCIENCE

Transitional kindergarteners got to do a hands-on experiment where they ana-lyzed and observed Orbeez gel beads. This process helps to develop critical thinking skills, or as they call it in TK, “turning on our computers”. Mrs. Lopez let them make educated guesses as to what would happen to the beads once taken out of the water. They even guessed how many beads were in the jar. They counted all 265 out loud— yes, our 4 year olds can count that high!
