SEPTEMBER FOR MICAHIt was a fairly smooth trip back to Maui from Turkey, at least once I had finally convinced them to check my two bags(a clothing bag and my fin bag)all the way back to Maui. It was 3:30AM and after not sleeping at all after a long last day in Turkey a hassel at check in was the last thing I wanted. They were only going to check my bags to Berlin where I had 55minutes to make my connection so I knew that I had to get them all the way through or I would be stuck in Berlin. After about an hour of negotiations I finally got to talk to the right person and boom no problem checked all the way through.

I managed to make all my connecting flights after a close call in Berlin and was back in Maui the evening of the morning I had left Turkey. None of my bags had made it but I wasn’t worried as I was very glad to be home and back in my own bed. I was getting a bit nervous though after five days and my bags, especially my fin bag not showing up. Normally I wouldn’t pack all my fins into one bag just in case they were to lose it but this time I had all my slalom and formula fins in Europe and I needed them back on Maui for testing so I had to do it. I started to really panic when I sat down and put it all on paper, the number of fins I had in there and the approximate worth of that bag worked out to be over $7500 and I knew if they had lost it they wouldn’t pay me that much for the bag. The airline had still not found anything on my bags, no news of where they were or when they might arrive.

I was only in Maui for a week after Turkey before heading out to Utah for a quick vacation with my two older kids Lance and K.C. But in this week I was able to sail a bunch on the new TR9 proto’s together with the new JP slalom boards. With some really cool new ideas and designs the new sails were feeling really good and were showing some very good speeds on the water and feeling very comfortable on the new JP boards. It finally came time to pack and leave for Utah and finally just hours before our flight I finally got the call that my bags were found and they were coming in on the flight that I would be leaving on. So I planned a quick early check in so as soon as the flight arrived I could go to baggage claim and put my eyes on that fin bag before I went and got on the plane, I needed this piece of mind that my fins were actually back.

It thankfully all worked out and we made it to Utah where I was very excited to do some archery hunting with friends as well as spend some time off with the kids and my mom. I was lucky enough to draw a buck tag right in the area where I grew up in Tooele so I knew the area pretty well and with some help from my good friends Erin


and Eliot Dalton we found a few good spots to stalk some deer. I unfortunately wasn’t lucky enough to bag anything but I did get very close to around 40 does and almost got a shot off on a small two point buck that came into about 40 yards. I even had one morning hunt with my brother Jake and my oldest son Lance, he was a little to restless while sitting under a tree in the cold for about four hours so we weren’t able to see any deer up close but I still had a lot of fun. We also had some nice hikes in the Autumn Utah weather where the trees were amazing in the colors. And had one very nice day of fishing on Strawberry resevoir where everyone caught fish even K.C. who caught two nice rainbows.

After this great trip in Utah it was back to Maui for one last week of testing and preparations for Sylt. With a few new TR-9 protos in my van it was back on the water testing these out and doing some nice photos which are already out there online and so far a lot of positive feedback on them. I had some really good days on these new TR9’s with some good light wind mornings and some stronger wind afternoons I was able to try out the new 9.2’s, 8.4’s and 7.0. This new panel layout and sleeve construction is really making the sails perform, the panel layout allows for a much better twist profile and more of a locked in draft. And with some shaping changes to allow a slightly lower and forward draft locking it in makes the sails perform a lot better in overpowered conditions but still allows them to have the power needed to really accelerate and plane after the gybes and in the holes. So far a great improvement in performance as well as very pleasing to the eyes!! With still over a month to go in development I think the final product is going to be very popular!!


I also had another court date for my "weapons charges" when I returned to Maui and finally this time we were able to get it sorted out. It was reduced down to a minor county code violation, so in the end I had only to pay a $150 fine and nothing would go on my permanent record. Good thing I had a great lawyer to help me out!!! Not a cheap lesson but a good one learned!!

Finally it was packing time again. I didn’t have much of my own gear to bring to Europe but I did have a bunch of gear for other people who asked me to bring them stuff from Maui. Taty had some of the new Loco sails that arrived in Maui and he needed them for the event in Sylt plus some other new booms, sails and masts. So in the end I did end up with about 6 bags to Europe but we condensed it with some of Pieter’s gear and he took it all on his flights. We both left Maui about the same time and flew into Brussels to drive up together from Holland. It was not a very good check in though as we got a very grumpy guy who made it very long and expensive to check in. We did manage to get it all checked in finally and make our flights, we met up in Brussels 32 hours later and all our bags were there.

Once in Holland we went to his house and did some unpacking, repacking and organizing and then decided rather than give in to the jet lag and fall asleep we would drive down the street to Hoek Van Holland his local beach and go for a sail. I had a few masts to test and wanted to get a feel of the cold water again and it was perfect wind for 7.6 so out we went. Our friend Wouter de Vries also came along to do a little gps’ing with us and it was perfect for this as well, not super windy but flat side off shore and he had

some great speeds in not so much wind. It was a great session to get some testing in and shake out the stiffness from the long flight.

After one night at his parents house with some good home cooking and a nice warm bed to sleep in we had his van loaded to the max and were on our way to Sylt. We made pretty good time despite all the road works in Germany and some heavy rains as well. We arrived at the train station in Niebull to go to Sylt with minutes to spare, we thought we were going to be really slick and just roll through the automated pay machine but instead the machine decided to eat Pieter’s card and when we finally had it all sorted we missed the train by about 30seconds. So we had to sit there for about ten minutes and then watch the train leave and wait another hour till the next train. Finally though we arrived in Sylt, found Josh and our apartment had some dinner and collapsed in our beds.

The next day was a pretty nice day for Sylt standards, at least it was not raining which was nice for registering and getting all the gear organized. Once all the gear was on the beach with footstraps back on and sail stickers in place in was time for the opening ceremony parade of nations, a Sylt world cup standard. The forecast was looking very good for wind for the next week in Sylt but it was also looking cold and wet, sure to be some good sailing but also a long event with rain and clouds for most all days. It was looking like the first couple of days would be waves and freestyle as they were supposed to be pretty windy, but the rest of the time also looks windy so probably some windy racing as well. Better than last year at least where we sat around for ten days with hardly a breeze...

As you know I spend lot of time in Peru and I also stay 2 weeks after the contest for the Don’t Let Go movie project. That make me stayed until september 9th in an other spot 400 km up north than pacasmayo which is called Lobitos. It’s usually a surfing spot but when the wind is good and when there is not too many surfers it can be a great waveriding, Robby Swift, Boujmaa, Flo Jung and I scored a mast hight swell and some siick footage for the movie which suppose to come out soon, check out the web site : http://dontletgo-movie.com/

After this Lobitos trip Boujmaa went to visite Baptiste Gossein in tahiti, Robby haded to go to Danemark, Flo back to Germany and I was not gonna come back at home yet because I hade the AWT East Cost event on the way. I arrived there in Northfolk at the same time as Morganx and Sam and do the 3 hours driving south to arrive to the Cape Hatteras where the estats agency Outer Beach Realty gave us this sick house for the week, and I have to thanks the Stokes family because they let us use one of their car, a pick up wich is really usefull to drive in the beach and see where is the best spot of the day.

So for the first three days that’s pretty much what we did, driving around trying to find the best spot but the condition were too bad. And to make the time passes faster we did some tourisme like

going up the light house and enjoy the wonderfull view, carting race, jacuzzi and little party...

On the last day the forcast was saying some little waves and some wind in the end of the afternoon. At 1pm we were still surfing on glassy waves but when we came back from lunch at 2.30 wind started to blow 10 to 15 knots but by the time everything and everybody got prepared the wind was more then 15 and consisten. They diceded to do the pros because we hade just 6 heat to finish it..



So Kevin, Morgan, Fabrice and I made to the final and that’s pretty rare but they couldn’t decide between Morgan, Fabrice and I so they told us that we hade to do another final between us three and going for the big moves...

So I knew it was a heat were the first one who land a move was wining so I did couple jumps and looked for the 360 wave but the move waves were really hard to find, until the last 5 minute I decided to go for it and try the goiter I almost didn’t pulled it but my wants to win was stronger then anything else at this moment. That was the winning move and with this result now, I can fight for the overall tittle and put the pressure behind Levi Siver wich was my idol before hahaha I’m pretty happy about it and i’m sure we gonna have a great show in Maui this year. Now i’m just enjoying to be back home after soo long and I sould be in Maui soon. See you on maui.Camille Juban

Yew! September was by far the best month of the year for me, with epic windsurfing in the Gorge and LA!

Normally I tend to follow a chronological order of events when writing my newsletters, but this time, screw it, I’m starting with the end of the month because it was probably the most fun windsurfing I’ve had in a long time!! Now now, that’s not saying I don’t enjoy each and everyday I get on the water, but there’s always something special about getting to windsurf at your home spot, especially when you haven’t been back in over 5 years. A friend’s birthday brought me back to LA at the end of the month and on a whim I decided to bring my wave gear along- my Tabou DaCurve 79L and 4.2, 4.6, and 5.1 Mutant. As if someone upstairs liked me, the very first day back in LA a south swell hit, and unusually warm fall temperatures inland meant solid afternoon thermals up at Leo Carrillo. Heading up the coast through Malibu towards Leo, I almost couldn’t contain myself in the car, I felt like a kid on a shopping spree in a candy store! Once I parked on the side of the highway and saw that the wind was already filled in and the waves were up, I practically ran over people as I rigged up my 5.1 Mutant, flew down the stairs, and bolted into the water.

Leo Carrillo is one of those secret gems of windsurfing locations - when it goes off there, it’s as good as starboard tack, down the line, wavesailing gets. And the crew of sailors there are second to none - awesome, awesome guys! I haven’t been back to Leo since I started spending my winters wavesailing in Maui, so I was extra stoked to get back and ride there with a few more seasons of experience under my belt. The 5.1 Mutant was the ultimate ticket, in winds avg from 15-22mph I never stopped planing, and caught wave after wave for 3.5 hours straight. On the inside the wind can get pretty light, but the low-end power of the 5.1 was all I needed to work the waves, and it’s agility allowed me to go pretty much wherever I pleased, with tighter turns and more power than I would have imagined in the lighter conditions. I’m gonna go ahead and say that the 5.1 Mutant was built for Leo! Out of a 5 day trip to LA, 4 days were at least 5.1 and head high waves, one afternoon I even got a 4.6 session in- pretty incredible for a spot where most people think windsurfing has ceased to exist!

As I’m sitting on the plane writing this newsletter on my way back up to the Gorge, I can only smile as I see tons of pics coming in online from yet another epic day in the gorge. We were absolutely blessed for the month of September with incredibly warm temperatures and unusually consistent, strong winds for so late in the season. There was a stretch of


4 days in the middle of the month where I was solidly lit on my 3.7 Legend at the hatch, and in spite of a lack of strong current, the swell was still coming in at up to logo high! On some of the lighter days I cruised down to the Event Site to train slalom with Tyson Poor, and had some awesome late-afternoon sessions on my TR-8 7.0.

The range on the 7.0 is just fantastic, it can go in the lightest of gusts on the inside, and when it starts blasting the sail feels like it gets even smoother and faster. It’s also been great to spend time with Jeff from Vector Fins at the event site, who has a few TR-8s himself, and spend some time experimenting with his different fins, which are pretty incredible.

Looking ahead, October is lining up to be a pretty epic month as well, with the last stop of the American Windsurfing Tour going down at Hookipa at the end of the month. I’m looking forward to heading back over to Maui, catching up with the team, and hopefully doing well against a talented fleet of pro’s at windsurfing’s wavesailing mecca!

The question and stoke that keeps flashing in my head for weeks now. Three big north swells and two south swells, thats what I call a good month. Ho’okipa has been, well Ho’okipa, sick, and the rest of the north shore has been epic as well. Saturday morning I woke up early, went out on my deck and could see Lines from K-bay to Jaws, right then I knew it was going to be an awesome day.

I arrived at Ho’okipa around 11 to see perfect mast high waves and some pros already out. I rigged my go to favorite sail, my 3.8 mutant and went out. After 2 or more hours of sailing it was getting a little to crowded for my taste so I decided to go to Mamas. Once I was at Mamas I saw how awesome Kuau looked; when I got to Kuau I could see the spray off the massive waves of outer Baldwin. I got to Baldwin and caught a few giants before taking the beating of my life trying to get back onto the outside when the wind had died. After getting cleaned out completely by a six wave set, each wave way over mast high, I thought I should probably go in at sugar cove and call somebody to pick me up. But I happened to see Upper Kanaha breaking clean and big so I felt obligated to go and ride what it had to offer; since thats where I learned to wave sail. After forty five minutes of slogging maybe a mile I arrived at "The Pit" a big slab wave outside Kanaha and sailed there until I couldn’t grip my boom anymore and went in.

My seemingly normal Ho’okipa sesh had turned into a full on north shore downwinder (lacking the wind but with big waves). I can’t wait till next month!

As the PWA registration deadline approaches at the end of October, we are getting into the home stretch with the TR-9 race sail development. Our goals have been clear, expanding range and top end speed, while ensuring instant acceleration and stability and based on all our testing with Micah and Phil we are on target. Our progress this year has been achieved through a combination of material layout and location adjustments combined with shaping and outline refinement.

We started by modifying the structure of the wide luff sleeve with the increased use of ultra light technora in the upper half of the sleeve in order to reduce stretch for better range and stability as well as lighten the top of the sail. Our testing of the Monofilm and XT versions of TR-8 sails showed that each had some advantages and we were inspired to combine the elements of both. To achieve this we modified the body panel layout of the TR-9 XT which locates materials in a manner that best combines the “crisp” feel of monofilm in the lower body with the light weight and softness of Technora in the upper sail body and leech.

In terms of shaping, we evaluated the outline geometry and aspect ratio on a size by size basis to ensure optimum balance and tension for each. Subsequently, the leech twist profiles were fine-tuned together with the new construction to achieve that magic balance of enough release for light handling and control in gusts and sufficient tension for good acceleration and forward drive. Lower cam pressure has been improved to maintain a locked profile while still giving painless cam rotation. Added tension in the lower body has been carefully balanced with the improved release in the mid and upper leech to ensure that the sails feel efficient and slippery in the wind giving tremendous range.

The work isn’t done yet but we are excited about this year’s progress in the race sails and look forward to completing the final touches and unleashing these fine creatures into the wild.

I remember September, sort of like remembering the wind going by. The days seem to go faster in this month. Maybe it’s because of the looming PWA deadline and the last big events coming around. There’s always a strange order to things, gathering details, on-the-water testing, and valued discussion. As the end of September approaches, the choices get more narrow, and the results are either making you happy... or sweaty :)

This year, September has been happy. Micah continues to have the speed, and Taty is constantly proving that freestyle and racing don’t have to be kept apart. He is showing everyone how agility and the right action can keep you in the race, even if all your competitors outweigh you by 30 pounds or more. Especially with sails that work well for a wide range of body types.

And then there has been the watching of the AWT Tour results and seeing Camille Juban keep the hammer down in the wide variety of conditions using his new Mutants. From what I can see, he’s getting very comfortable with them, and his confidence is growing.

Next month will be the final dustup at Ho’okipa, with an extra two days for getting the good conditions, and what will surely be an all time good competitor crew. We’ll be rooting for him (and local faves like Ferdinando, Casey, and Ingrid) to take the top honors and possibly win the whole year.

The Lahaina Harbor renovation is nearly finished and this month we had to shift Cornelia to Maalaea Harbor. She’s side tied and strung like in a web, but he wind just blows right up her bum twenty knots or more all the time. Cane fire ashes, cane dirt, and salt spray make the decks look dirty and gray. The wind is so strong that the boat needs to be closed up and kept that way even when we are aboard. As a result, this month has not been one for working on the boat or going sailing. The move back to Lahaina will be on the 7th of October, and then Saturday afternoons will once again be quiet and enjoyable, under the awning, with an adult beverage.

Always plenty to do this time of year, with the PWA registration now at the end of October we are full on into race sail development and so far it’s been a good month of progress. We had really good conditions here on Maui for the month of September so it gave us a chance to continue work on the race sails for 2013. With the huge success for the TR-8, the TR-9 has slowly moved from ideas to reality and so far we have good progress on performance and control.

I recently had a trip to the UK and Europe, a little business and a little pleasure. It was great to meet our European distribution crew at Boardpunx and visit the mast manufacturing plant in Croatia as the two main priorities on this trip. You can’t bet face to face communication so the trip was well worth while to bring confidence and future stability to the brand in Europe.

I stopped off in England for few days as well and completed my 12th marathon, running a new Personal record in 3 hours and 36 minutes in some cold and wet conditions in the New Forest area of Southern England.

Didn’t I just finish writing the august Month report couple days ago? Why I am getting an email from Phil & Bogo about the September report? Damn how fast days fly.

Well seems like the Bonaire windsurf schools are really starting to feel the new Mauisails sails, or maybe it is because I am doing such great promotion around that they had to get their hands on the MauiSails products.

Well my opinion is that MauiSails do last longer then any sail brands that we had on Bonaire so far and they are really customers like. And as far for breakage out of all the MauiSails we had in 1 year rental only 2 out of the 35 broke. So this is such good products that you will love for sure,

So next time you get on Bonaire you will for sure have MauiSails to rent from: LEGEND, GLOBAL, LOCO, PURSUIT, BLAZE and SWITCH and for the kids you will have the REBEL.

As for my sailing just trying the sail as much as possible, BUT!! Still can’t believe how good Turkey is for sailing and have seen many riders using the TR-8 is such a great feeling.

Sylt is next and will see how it all goes down there. Cut the crap and get your self some MauiSails products :)
