Vocabulary
compare – to see if something is the same or different
ordering – to put numbers in order based on size
In this lesson we will answer these questions:
How can you compare decimals?
How can you order decimals?
How can you compare decimals?
Let’s compare the decimals 5.785 and 5.782.
Step 1Line up the decimal points.
5.7855.782
How can you compare decimals?
Let’s compare the decimals 5.785 and 5.782.
Step 2Compare digits of the same place value, starting at the left.
5.7855.782
How can you compare decimals?
Let’s compare the decimals 5.785 and 5.782.
Step 3Keep comparing digits as you move to the right until you find digits that are different.
5.7855.782
How can you compare decimals?
Let’s compare the decimals 5.785 and 5.782.
Step 4Compare.
5.7855.782
Which is bigger?
How can you compare decimals?
5.7855.782
Which is bigger?
5.785 is bigger than 5.782
In math we say, “5.785 is greater than 5.782.”
We write 5.785 > 5.782
Let’s compare the decimals 2.831 and 2.836.
Step 2Compare digits of the same place value, starting at the left.
2.8312.836
Let’s compare the decimals 2.831 and 2.836.
Step 3Keep comparing digits as you move to the right until you find digits that are different.
2.8312.836
How can you compare decimals?
Let’s compare the decimals 5.785 and 5.782.
Step 4Compare.
5.7855.782
Which is smaller?
When you see a problem asking you to compare decimals it will look like this:
1.03 1.23
You will have to put in the >,<, or = sign
1.03 < 1.23
You will have to put in the >,<,= sign
1.031.23 Which is bigger?
1.23 is bigger, so the symbol will open toward that number.
Ordering decimals is very similar to comparing decimals. It is when you put three or more decimals in order from greatest (biggest) to least (smallest) or least to greatest.
Order the following numbers from least to greatest:
2.812, 2.809, 2.730
Step 1: Line up the decimal points
2.8122.8092.7302.741
Order the following numbers from least to greatest:
2.812, 2.809, 2.730
Step 2: Compare digits of the same place value beginning at the left.
2.8122.7302.809
Order the following numbers from least to greatest:
2.812, 2.809, 2.730
Step 2: Compare digits of the same place value beginning at the left.
2.8122.730 this number is the least2.809
Order the following numbers from least to greatest:
2.812, 2.809, 2.730
Step 3: Continue to compare digits of the same place value beginning at the left.
2.8122.7302.809this number is the least
Order the following numbers from least to greatest:
2.812, 2.809, 2.730
Step 4: Write the numbers from least to greatest.
2.730, 2.809, 2.812
Order the following numbers from greatest to least:
5.312, 5.132, 5.123
Step 1: Line up the decimal points.
5.3125.1325.123
Order the following numbers from greatest to least:
5.312, 5.132, 5.123
Step 2: Compare digits of the same place value beginning at the left.
5.3125.1325.123
Order the following numbers from greatest to least:
5.312, 5.132, 5.123
Step 2: Compare digits of the same place value beginning at the left.
5.312 this number is the greatest5.1325.123
Order the following numbers from greatest to least:
5.312, 5.132, 5.123
Step 3: Continue to compare digits of the same place value beginning at the left.
5.3125.132 this number is the greatest5.123
Order the following numbers from greatest to least:
5.312, 5.132, 5.123
Step 4:
5.3125.132 this number is the greatest5.123
Order the following numbers from greatest to least:
5.312, 5.132, 5.123
Step 4: Write the numbers from least to greatest.
