In this lesson we will answer the question:

How do you use coordinate planes to solve real world problems?

You will need a copy of the print out called M5L#51 Coordinate Grid Paper to use for this lesson. So pause the tape, print the handout, and then restart the tape.

Vocabulary Review coordinate plane- is a flat surface formed by two intersecting, perpendicular lines. Each of these lines is called an axis. x-axis- The horizontal line.

y-axis- The vertical line.

Page 7: Math 5 Coordinate Planes and Real World Problems Instructor: Mrs. Tew Turner

Vocabulary Review Quadrants-The x-axis and the y-axis divide the coordinate plane into four areas. These areas are called quadrants.

Ordered Pairs- Digits that indicate where a point is located on a coordinate grid. Ex: (3,2)

Vocabulary

x-coordinate- The first number in an ordered pair. It is graphed on the x-axis.

y-coordinate- The second number in an ordered pair. It is graphed on the y-axis.

On a map, coordinates are given in degrees of longitude and latitude. (longitude, latitude)

Page 19: Math 5 Coordinate Planes and Real World Problems Instructor: Mrs. Tew Turner

(longitude, latitude)Longitude = north or south (x-axis)Latitude = east or west (y-axis)

Coordinate Grids help to locate points or destinations. We need to follow the x-axis, then the y-axis. This is used in locating places on a map and used to describe exact locations with a grid.
