Every single minute of our life depends on electricity.

This M.Sc programme is designed to prepare future engineers to face the modernglobal challenges related to sustainability, climate change and mitigation of theimpact that our life style has on the environment.

Nowadays, societal and industrial growth is largely based on the availability ofenergy in a form that can be readily transformed into light, heat, movement,electromagnetic waves for data transmission and remote processing,electrochemical activity. Electric energy represents the most efficient way toconvert energy from primary energy sources and transport it to distant places. Itsfeatures make electricity unique for many activities in everyday life, ranging fromhousehold, industrial or service applications.

Electric energy is clean, easy to control and environment-friendly. In ourcountry, more than one-third of the consumed energy is converted into electricenergy before its end use. Electric energy is a precious good that should not bewasted. To attain this goal, all related conversions, from initial production to enduse, must be optimized.

Electric Energy yields immediate integration of renewables within the whole energysystem. This integration represents a crucial challenge toward mitigating theimpact of fossil fuels and grants sustainable energy production for futuregenerations.

Presently, the electric energy field is undergoing significant changes that will makethe future role of the electrical engineer more and more important as a key playerin managing energy and protecting the environment.

Electricity is the “coolest” and most up-to-date way to exploit energy! Thanks toInternet of Things (the set of technologies that allows us to be always connectedand share our data), telecommunication and control systems, and artificialintelligence, it brings to life all applications that improve our life, our homes andour work nowadays: Smart Grids, Smart Cities, Industry 4.0, E-vehicles, Homeautomation, ...

Politecnico di Milano offers three different M.Sc tracks in ElectricalEngineering, characterized by cross-disciplinary skills and covering a largenumber of different application areas.

Students enrolled in the M.Sc. Programme will gain expertise in the technical areasof electric power systems, renewable energy sources, smart grid technologies,smart transportation systems, E-vehicles, the design of electrical machines anddrives, power electronics, and industrial automation.

• The track in Electrical Engineering is aimed at forming highly-qualifiedprofessionals with the required skills to solve complex design problems andfoster technological innovation in the typical fields of Electrical Engineering. Thisrequires a solid background on the theoretical and scientific foundations of theElectrical Engineering, as well as on the most advanced methods of operatingthe electric systems and equipment.

• The track in Smart Grids provides an answer to the need of exploitingrenewable energy sources, such as sun and wind, by means of distributedgeneration that complement the traditional high-power hydro-electric andthermoelectric generation. This need implies a new way of designing andoperating the future intelligent electric distribution grid thanks to the applicationof ICT techniques (this track is supported by Enel S.p.A.)

• The track in Mobility Engineering explores electric issues associated withtransportation systems. The areas focus mainly on railway systems (includingHigh Speed - High Capacity systems), underground networks (includingautomatic systems), mass overground urban transport systems (tramlines,trolleybuses, and light rail), independent transport systems (electric and hybridvehicles) and electric systems onboard ships and airplanes. Both theinfrastructural and energy aspects are considered in relation to supply systemstogether with electromechanical aspects of converting electricity for traction (thistrack is supported the Italian Railways Group – Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane andis a one-year track developed after the first year of the ELECTRICALENGINEERING track)

We strongly believe that international exchanges can enrich the CV and completethe personal growth of our students: starting from this assumption we haveestablished many exchange projects and double degree programs with the mostprestigious European and non-European universities.
