1. Introduction
With the demand for high user throughput in limited radio spectrum, Massive
MIMO AAU is the solution to use a large number of built-in antennae to set up
dedicated connections to different users by sharing the same radio spectrum. In
this field trial, Massive MIMO AAU (AAU5980) is set up to provide 32x32 MIMO
capabilities to connect 8 devices to demonstrate the capacity gain of Massive
MIMO AAU solution. Performance of 2x2 MIMO antennas with RRU is taken as
baseline scenario to compare with that of Massive MIMO AAU in term of capacity
gain.

3. Test Items
During the trial, cell throughput, maximum throughput and coverage pattern were tested

4. Test Result
4.1. Test 1 – Cell Throughput comparison Test points were selected to achieve the best cell throughput performance as shown in Figure 1.

8 test points shown above were located by make sure it can achieve best throughput. In each individual test point, the test device was set up as shown in Figure 2 and running FTP download test from an internal FTP server.

When test device is connected to 2x2 MIMO antenna with RRU, FTP file download is performed. When all the devices started ftp download, cell throughput is obtained from cell throughput monitoring tool and the result is shown in Figure 2a. 2x2 MIMO antenna with RRU (cell throughput)

After 2x2 MIMO antenna with RRU test is completed, we reconnect the test devices to Massive MIMO AAU, FTP file download is then performed. When all

the devices started ftp download, cell throughput is obtained from cell throughput monitoring tool and the result is shown in Figure 2b. Massive MIMO AAU (cell throughput)

4.2. Test 2 – Maximum Throughput The maximum throughput test points for 2x2 MIMO antenna with RRU and Massive MIMO AAU were shown in Figure 3

In the field trial, speed test was carried out to check the maximum throughput; the results were shown in Figure 4 and 5 where 2x2 MIMO antenna with RRU configuration can achieve better maximum throughput comparing to Massive MIMO AAU configuration.

5. Conclusion
1) Massive MIMO AAU cell can increase the cell throughput by 4.8 times comparing
to normal 2x2 MIMO antenna with RRU under 8 selected locations for throughput
test (The final cell throughput improvement will be subject to the test locations of
the users).
2) The peak user throughput of Massive MIMO AAU is 37% lower than peak user
throughput of 2x2 MIMO antenna with RRU under TM4 mode.
3) Owing to the limitation on transmission power of testing Massive MIMO AAU,
coverage result of Massive MIMO AAU was found not as good as 2x2MIMO
antenna with RRU.
