Worldwide standardization committees: SATIMO’s commitment

• CTIA (International Association for the Wireless Telecommunication Industry)

SATIMO is a member of the CTIA working groups, focusing on the Over the Air measurement proto

cols for the CDMA, GSM, UMTS, TDMA and analogue protocols.

Both our SG 24 and SG 64 can perform measure- ments in compliance with the CTIA 2.2. standard. In addition, our SG 64 in Atlanta has undergone the vendor CTIA 3.0 on-site audit that includes measurements for A-GPS protocols and offi cial CTIA approved Test Lab certifi cation is expected to follow upon availablility from CTIA. Several SATIMO customers, including test labora-

tories, mobile manufacturers and antenna design houses, have CTIA accredited systems using SATIMO equipment.

SATIMO’s own CTIA authorized test and calibration lab in Kennesaw, GA (USA) also offers measure-ment calibration and services.

Certifi cation 2246.02 and 2246.01 for calibration and electrical: The scope of accreditation is location-dependent and does not include

the entire scope of Satimo activities.

• COST 2100 (European Cooperation in the fi eld of Scientifi c and Technical Research)

SATIMO has been part of the Cost 273 over the years and is now part of the new

COST 2100 working group that is in charge of developing European standards for the testing of wireless devices.

• 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) SATIMO is part of the 3GPP working

group, the scope of which is to pro-duce technical specifications and technical reports for a 3rd generation

mobile system. The 3GPP covers all GSM (including GPRS and EDGE) and W-CDMA specifi cations (UMTS).

• Wi-Fi Alliance SATIMO is part of the Wi-Fi alliance

which brings together key industry players to develop worldwide-accepted standards for high-speed wireless local area networking.

About SATIMO

SATIMO specializes in the design and manufacture of antenna measurement systems. The company has moved antenna measurement techniques forward with a unique, innovative multi-probe technology (MV-ScanTM). The technology is based on the use of arrays of probes that are electronically scanned to measure electromagnetic fi elds. This technology has brought two major changes in the fi eld of antenna measurement: the speed (a single electronic scan allows for the visualization of the fi elds in 1D or 2D almost instantaneously) and the fl exibility (the array can be integrated in any kind of geometry for both indoor and outdoor measurements). SATIMO is part of Microwave Vision SA, which inclu-des ORBIT/FR and AEMI, and offers full turnkey sys-tems to measure a stand alone antenna or antennas integrated into complex structures.

1/ MIMO Testing: A New Challenge

With the recent mobile data market take-off, achieving the best throughput from rare frequency bands is a necessity. The data throughput of mobile and other wireless terminals is highly affected by fading, due to multi-path propagation in both urban and indoor environments.

Multiple-input and multiple-output, or MIMO, is the use of multiple antennas at both the transmitter and receiver to improve communica-tion performance. This is done by combining signals received by more antennas in the wireless terminal. It achieves higher spectral effi ciency (more bits per second per hertz of band-width) and link reliability or diversity (reduced fading). Hence, MIMO offers signi-fi cant increases in data throughput and link range without additional band-width or transmit power.

MIMO wireless devices are key to WiMAX and 4G mobile broadband adoption but their testing represents a new challenge for the Telecommunications industry: In the past, characterizing the device was considered enough; now, with new multiple antennas, testing and optimizing a device means characterizing its end-to-end reception performance in clutte-red environments that simulate real RF environments. Due to the complexity of multiple antenna setups, a fl exible and fast testing solution becomes a major asset in the antenna design cycle and fi nal testing.

2/ A fast and fl exible solution based on SATIMO’s multi-probe technology

The SATIMO MIMO testing solution uses a circular, multi-probe arch, paired with an amplifi cation unit, a MV-CalTM calibration unit, a Spatial Channel Emulator (SCE) and a radio communication tester. With its MV-CalTM unit, SATIMO drastically reduces the calibration time required for MIMO measurements. Flexibility is created by the selection of 4 to 32 dual polarized probes to form clusters of direct signals, scatterers and interferers.

3/ Control RF Environments for Mobile Terminal Testing

The SATIMO MIMO solution creates a fully-operational Spatial Fading Emulator (SFE), allowing emulating specifi c environments at the wi-reless device location. A probe or a cluster of probes can be used to represent the direct signal; other probe clusters can stand for multi-path signals or interferers so that more than just uniform models can be set. Effi cient end-to-end testing of the wireless device, including its an-tenna confi gurations, receiver, digital signal processing (DSP) and software, can be performed in a controlled realistic environment. It leads to shorter time-to-market and savings in quality related costs.

MV-ScanTM Technology: The Clear Solution for MIMO Testing

The MV-CalTM unit allows for almost instantaneous calibration of all the SCE channels. When associated with StarMIMO, the overall measurement time is drastically reduced, improving Return On Investment.

MIMO testing requires a multi-probe setup to emu-late multi-path environ-ments at the DUT location. After more than 10 years of continuous development, SATIMO multi-sensor tech-nology has gained momen-tum and trust within the Telecommunications indus-try due to its speed and accuracy. During those years, SATIMO has de-veloped a solid expertise in the calibration of multi-probe systems. Today, MV-ScanTM technology, by allowing simultaneous signal transmission to multiple probes and by minimizing calibration time, is the clear answer to the challenging demands of creating com-plex environment testing setups.
