Dear MSW families and friends,
Each year the first of July marks the beginning of the new fiscal year for the Archdiocese of Chicago. This is also when changes begin to take effect. Among them is the transition of new pastors. Father Jerry Gunderson has been the beloved pastor of Mary, Seat of Wisdom, serving for 15 years. While changes can be difficult, Father Jerry’s wisdom has made the transition much easier for the faculty and staff and we hope that overflows to the rest of our community.
Aside from the day-to-day operations of the parish and school, the pastor’s primary responsibility is the spiritual needs of those entrusted to him. Like all of us, his model of leadership is the Lord Himself who came, not to be served, but to serve. Pope Francis has urged all priests to take on the smell of the sheep. I understand this to mean that we can only truly know your spiritual needs by being with you.
The Covid-19 pandemic, however has brought with it extra challenges in this regard. We priests mourn our inability to be with you. Therefore, our goal begins with safely reopening for Sunday Masses again so that you can be present at the sacrifice of Christ at Mass, truly the source and summit of our faith. I am pleased to announce that we have a reopening Mass schedule which can be found on the next page.
Beginning Monday, July 6, we will have daily Mass Monday through Friday at 8 a.m. Our Saturday morning 9:00 a.m. Mass returns on July 11 and beginning Sunday, July 12, in addition to the 9 and 11 a.m. Masses, the 7 p.m. Mass will resume. Please register for daily and weekend Masses on the parish website or by calling the rectory at 847-825-3153 if you need assistance.
In addition, we have returned to our normal Confession schedule, Wednesdays from 6-7 p.m. and Saturdays from 4-4:45 p.m. Finally, our office hours have resumed with the following schedule: 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday and 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Special thanks to our team leaders, Mary Hermanson and Seminarian Andy Matijevic, who have sacrificed much time and energy towards our re-opening, along with captains John Ciprian, Julie Costa, and Tom D’Ambrosio, who have trained over forty volunteers for serving the community as we begin to reopen the parish.

Pondering Priesthood
A Seminarian’s Thoughts This weekend’s readings remind us of various celebrations of liturgical year and the salvific acts of Christ which brought about our salvation. Currently, we are in the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. The priest wears green, the art and environment around the sanctuary is simple foliage, the readings at Mass are generally from the same book for a few weeks and read continuously, chapter by chapter. This “time” is ordinary in its most basic sense. But at the same time, there is nothing ordinary about what we do when we come to Mass. Today’s first and second readings bring us back to two liturgical celebrations in our calendar, Palm Sunday and Pentecost. The first reading is quoted in the Passion account of Matthew, as Jesus triumphantly enters Jerusalem on a donkey. We all know the subsequent events that resulted in that entry to the Holy City and that Holy Week. In the second reading from Romans, Paul is writing about the Spirit. The same Spirit that was given by Jesus on the night of the Resurrection, and the same Spirit that descended upon the apostles and Mary at Pentecost, is the same Spirit that comes upon us in baptism and is strengthened in Confirmation. This Spirit, as Paul says, will raise us up on the last day as it raised Jesus from the dead. This Spirit unifies us in our common mission and purpose to love and serve God and neighbor. This Spirit allows us to be used for God’s glory. After reliving the events of Palm Sunday and Pentecost in the first and second readings, the gospel brings us back into Ordinary Time. In the gospel, Jesus says to his disciples and to us today, “Come to me, all you who are labored and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” It is in this liturgical season of Ordinary Time the Church allows us to come away with Jesus and rest. We can dive more deeply into an encounter with him, alive with the Spirit, as we continue to remember his sacrificial love that was put into motion as he triumphantly entered Jerusalem as a king, died as a criminal, rose victorious from the grave by the Spirit and gave the Spirit to the apostles. Even in the ordinariness of life, in these “dog days of summer,” God is still acting, God is still renewing, God is still inviting us into relationship with Him through the liturgical cycle and scripture. May we use these weeks, and months ahead before we once again celebrate Advent, to continue to deepen our relationship with Christ so when we begin a new liturgical year on November 29, we will be ready to understand Jesus through a different gospel and cycle of readings. Let us deepen our awareness of Christ in the Scriptures that we hear throughout the year and see Christ as the culmination of the liturgical year, and the fulfillment of the scriptures. May we rest in Christ, who alone has the power to bring good out of evil, light out of darkness, and life out of death.

On my first day at Mary, Seat in July of 2013, the interior of the church was being disassembled, gutted in preparation for renovation. As I walked through the Gathering Space entrance, I was met by four robust construction workers carrying the huge crucifix which hung in the
main sanctuary of church. The enormity of the cross took my breath away. The visceral heft of the cross was evident by the men’s exertion. The Lord was horizontal, not in his more familiar, vertical glory. I felt stunned to see Jesus up close, laid low. I thought to myself, this is how it must have felt for his friends and mother presumably, who saw him removed from the cross. I suddenly had a burning desire to know and blurted to the men, “Where are you taking him?” “The same place we’ll be storing the pews.” It wasn’t rational, but I needed to know, “He’ll be safe, right? And, you’ll bring Him back?” “He’ll be safe. Covered. And yes, we’ll bring him back in about four months, November.” I walked to my office sheepishly thinking, “Jesus has left the building.” How will we survive, pray, without our familiar place of worship and the visage of our Lord on the cross? I silently prayed, “Dwell in my heart, dear Jesus, in the hearts of your faithful.” Then, I proceeded to hang an exceptionally large cross on the wall of the Religious Enrichment Center. The months while the church was under renovation in 2013 were similar in many respects to the past few months of 2020, in that the parish was “displaced,” “scattered.” One major difference then is that we were able to gather, albeit in the chapel, Wisdom Hall and Brian Barry Gym, but gather for worship we did—without having to count the space between us nor wearing masks. Then, every visual signifier in the church, namely furnishings, candles, and tabernacle were removed. In 2020, the beauty of the church is intact, but the assembly, the people of God are still dispersed, slowly returning. I never imagined there could be something worse than the sanctuary cross being removed from the church. I have come to discover in my time at Mary, Seat of Wisdom that the sacred heart of Jesus dwells in the hearts of the faithful.
We may discover our unity with and through Him while we assemble around His table, but His revelation is not confined by the four walls of the church, nor even to the Eucharist itself, although it is the “source and summit” of the faith. St. Teresa of Avila wrote: “I know and have experienced that the Kingdom of God is within us.”
If circumstances ever prevent us from gathering again, God forbid, I imagine, we’d do as the early followers of Jesus did-- gather in small groups, tell stories, even write letters of “what we have seen and heard.”
What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we looked upon and touched with our hands concerns the Word of life— for the life was made visible; we have seen it and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was made visible to us— what we have seen and heard we proclaim now to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; for our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.
We are writing this so that our joy may be complete. (1 Jn 1:1-4)
I am so very grateful to my colleagues in ministry including Mrs. Gretchen Spoo, Mrs. Terese Dysart, the whole pastoral staff, seminarians, deacons, priests and Fr. Gunderson. I could tell many stories of inspiring faith to which I have been witness in the lives of our invaluable volunteers, catechists, children, and families. I hold as sacred “what I have seen and heard.” I carry you in my heart as I leave my position. We will forever be united in Him and enfolded in the love of his church.

Thank You, Gardeners! Thank you to our Garden Ministry members and Crux teens who worked together to tend our garden in preparation for our church reopening! What a lovely garden greets us as we enter our church!
Crux Teens Answer Call to Serve in Challenging Times Members of MSW’s Teen Ministry, Crux, have traveled to the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels in Chicago’s West Humboldt Park neighborhood twice this summer. Each trip was filled with working in the gardens, weeding, planting, and sorting food donations.
Food deliveries from the Chicago Food Depository needs to be sorted and bagged for the Tuesday food pantry that serves families in the neighborhood. As a result of the pandemic and its related challenges, the numbers coming to the food pantry have increased from the usual pre-COVID crowd of around 225, to some weeks numbers now reaching the mid-700s! Teens bagged over 150 bags of food, each one containing two soups, one tomato sauce, peanut butter, jam, two pounds of pasta, a large box of raisins, a box of crackers, a bag of lentils and a bag of candy. The teens assist in any and all jobs that are needed. Some moved furniture, and one crew of six spent five hours washing and drying all the dishes in the hall that had become dusty when new boilers were installed in the church basement. The teens worked hard. Youth Minister Helen Megally is hoping that more trips to OLA will be possible over the summer. The teen ministry has a long-standing relationship with OLA and the Franciscans of the Eucharist. To learn more about OLA, visit their website www.missionola.com
RESULTS OF LIFELONG FAITH FORMATION SURVEY The Lifelong Faith Formation Initiative evolved from the Parish Transformation “Refresh” process of 2016, in which parishioners identified three main areas of parish vitality: Call to Holiness, Building Community and Lifelong Faith Formation. Advisory Team Ministry leaders working in faith formation formed an Advisory Team to address these catechetical goals. The Advisory Team strove to have as comprehensive a representation of catechetical ministries as possible: MSW School; Children’s Liturgy of the Word; Special Religious Development (SPRED); Catechesis of the Good Shepherd; Family Faith Weaving; School of Religion; Christian
Family Movement; Council of Catholic Women; Welcoming Your Child; RCIA; Women at the Well; One Book, One Parish; Crux, Into the Deep and Scripture Study. Statement of Purpose The first step in our efforts was to create a statement of purpose in which we define faith formation as “the act of handing on the Word of God intended to inform the entire faith community and candidates for Initiation into the Church about the teachings of Christ, transmitted by the Apostles to the Church. It also involves the lifelong forming of people into witnesses to Christ and opening their hearts to the spiritual transformation given by the Holy Spirit.” (US Catechism for Adults, USCCB 2006) Planning Process With the assistance of Vibrant Faith Symposium, hosted by John Roberto, we have entered a planning process to explore ways to animate this new whole-community approach to faith formation. “Lifelong faith formation integrates three primary environments—the church community, the family, and the life stage/peer group—to promote maturing in faith by engaging all ages intergenerational relations, activities, and church life and events (including Sunday worship), equipping and supporting parents and the whole family in sharing and practicing their faith at home, and engaging each life stage in activities and experiences designed to address their religious and spiritual journeys, life stage needs, and ways they learn and grow.” In our planning process we created a profile of our current faith formation programs and assessed where we stand by surveying parishioners on life stages that may need support in faith formation. The Lifelong Faith Formation Survey was distributed in February of 2020 and sought feedback from the following age groups: Adolescents (13-19), Young Adults (20s-30s), Midlife Adults (40-55), Mature Adults (55-70), Older Adults (70+) and Other. Survey Findings The findings of the survey showed that:
• Parishioners were generally satisfied with the faith formation opportunities for school age children and their families but that there was room for growth in opportunities for families of preschool and toddler children. • Catechists felt that opportunities for service and evangelization among Junior High students could be improved. • While there were a great amount of accolades for the teen outreach in CRUX teen ministry, additional opportunities could be developed for college-aged adults and young adults who are single. • Similarly, older adults who are 70 years or older would like more community-building experiences and end of life spiritual enrichment.
We plan to use the results of the survey to guide our planning for intergenerational faith formation in the years ahead. Director of Faith Formation & Evangelization Position Named A new position has been established called the Director of Faith Formation and Evangelization to replace the position held by Ms. Thibeau, which was Director of Catechesis. This new title better reflects the direction the evolving ministry of faith formation that is centered on a family approach rather than simply centered on children alone, and focused on all stages of the lifecycle. A Great Team Effort We are grateful to our Lifelong Faith Formation Advisory Team members: Peg Barry, Laura Clark, Terese Dysart, Mary Ellen Fasolo, Kathleen Jacobs, Maureen Lynch, Joan McConville, Howard Moy, Leo Plaza, Chris Pillow and Sandy Solari. “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” ~ A Look at the MSW Class of 2020 As the files are closed on an exceptionally challenging school year, some tidbits of information on the Class of 2020 might be of interest: Eight of the 51 graduates have a parent who also graduated from Mary, Seat of Wisdom School:

The 51 graduates are attending 17 different high schools! While nearly half the class, 24 students, will attend Maine South next year, 37% will be attending area Catholic high schools including Notre Dame College Prep (7), Fenwick (3) and Loyola Academy (4). Other Catholic high schools selected are Trinity, St. Patrick’s, Resurrection, St. Ignatius and Woodlands Academy in Lake Forest.
Because MSW students come from a broad area, some will be attending a number of area public high schools besides Maine South including Niles North, Maine West, Ridgewood, Taft, Crystal Lake Central and Hampshire High School. One graduate’s family has moved to the Richmond, Virginia area, where she will attend Atlee High School in Mechanicsburg. MSW’s Class of 2020 is spreading their wings and moving out into the world where we hope they will continue to be the hands and arms of God by serving those in need and sharing the Good News of God’s love for all.

Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
These words of our Savior seem to be in stark contrast to the previous chapter from the same gospel, when we were told that if we do not take up our crosses, we are not worthy of Christ. Connecting these two messages might help us on our faith journeys. Being a follower of Christ surely means that we must embrace the cross, in its mystery of both suffering and triumph. This is something that we need not do alone, for the burden is often too heavy for us to carry by ourselves. Who, then, do we turn to? We can turn to the Body of Christ—the community of disciples gathered for worship. When we find the burden too heavy, let us remember that we can share that burden with our Christian sisters and brothers, who can help bring us rest.

Does anything match a mother’s pride in her children? First Communions, confirmations, graduations, weddings: how these delight a mother’s heart! Imagine, then, Assunta Goretti, the only mother ever to attend her child’s canonization! In poverty-stricken rural Italy, widowed Assunta tended fields for the Serenelli family, whose eighteen-year-old son, Alessandro, propositioned her barely twelve-year-old Maria; then, when she resisted, crying, “It is a sin! God forbids it!” he stabbed her fourteen times. As she lay dying, Maria assured the attending priest, “Yes, I forgive Alessandro! I want him to be in Paradise with me someday.” Imprisoned, unrepentant, Alessandro changed after dreaming that a radiant Maria had offered him fourteen lilies. “I’ve kept my promise,” she smiled. “You’ll be here with me someday.” Upon release, he rushed to beg Assunta’s
forgiveness. “Jesus has forgiven you,” she replied, “my Maria, too. How can I refuse?” Next morning, mother and murderer walked arm in arm to church and knelt side by side for Communion.

This week’s Rose for Life at St. Joseph’s shrine is donated by Shirley Girardi in loving memory of the deceased members of the Girardi Family. To honor Mary, our parish patroness and St. Joseph, Protector of the Holy Family, single long-stemmed roses will be placed at both shrines each week before the weekend liturgies. The roses symbolize the Church’s respect for life at all stages and the hope that abortion will soon be a thing of the past.
