Passing It On

Faith Formation

Heavy rains the last few weeks have saturated the ground so that we had to relocate our “Mass on the Grass” indoors. Fortunately, Mary, Seat of Wisdom has developed retention ponds on the west side of the West Parking Lot and at the new athletic field. Retention ponds collect the excess water that results from heavy downpours. The new athletic field has a retention pond that allows the field to dry more quickly so the kids can enjoy this new addition to our campus.

The recent rains have reminded me of a beautiful passage in the Bible from the Prophet Isaiah. The Bible reminds us that just as the rains come down from heaven to water the earth, Jesus, the Son of God, has come down from heaven to penetrate the earth with abundant love.

In the tradition of the Catholic Church, a flowing fountain or a drenching downpour is also a symbol of how the Holy Spirit works. Catholics believe that the Holy Spirit continues to pour out God’s abundant love on the world and especially on those who follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

Each of us received the Spirit of Jesus in Baptism. Each year in February, our eighth-grade students celebrate the Holy Spirit in a fuller way when they receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Catholic tradition has also identified Gifts of the Holy Spirit and Fruits of the Holy Spirit. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are: wisdom, understanding, right judgement, courage, knowledge, reverence, and a sense of wonder and awe in the presence of God. They are acknowledged in the prayer the bishop says over the candidates at Confirmation. In the letter to the Galatians, St. Paul identified the Fruits of the Holy Spirit as: love, joy, peace patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

When I recently spoke to the students about the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit, I found myself wondering “what is the difference and why the distinction?” It occurred to me that Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit are like the blossom and the fruit.

A blossom is a sign that there is life coming. The fruit is coming to maturity as the result of growth. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit, when fully matured in individuals and in our communal life, are fruitful. The fruits of the Holy Spirit are observable behaviors of people who have allowed the grace of the Holy Spirit to be effective in them. These virtues are evidence that these individuals have put love of God and love of neighbor first.

As I mentioned last Sunday, the Catholic Identity theme for September is KINDNESS. First, we celebrate the kindness of God. Because God loves us, He gave us this great and beautiful world. Because God loves us, He forgives our sins and failings. Because God loves us, we can live forever with God. Because God loves us, He sent Jesus to show us the way to our eternal home.

If God has loved us with such great kindness, then we ought to also love one another. Kindness is our response to God’s love. Kindness is a form of love.

Love is in the air. I’ve been celebrating a lot of weddings recently, and my main focus during wedding prep with my couples is that I desire for them to be SAINTS. That’s all I care about. So for all of you who are married, here’s a list of saints who were married to each other, and led each other to heaven, which is the end-goal of the incredible sacrament of marriage. So, whoever has been called to the vocation of marriage, look to these saints, because you too can become a saint!

St. Isidore & St. Maria de la Cabeza • great couple; fell deeply in love; together had a deep devotion to Our Lady. Blessed Luigi and Maria Beltrame • head over heels in love; Maria had serious

complications with her first pregnancy. Doctors highly recommended an abortion. Maria refused. She gave birth to a baby girl. Maria and Luigi went on to have three more children, all who went on to the priesthood and religious life.

St. Vincent & St. Waldetrudis • because what man wouldn’t want a woman

named Waldetrudis? This was a holy couple from the seventh century who went on to have four children who would also be made saints.

Mary & Joseph • two words: power couple. St. Priscilla & St. Aquila • ancient first century love-birds. Originally Jewish, but converted to Christianity after

befriending St. Paul; hosted St. Paul secretly in their home when he was on the run; road-tripped with St. Paul to Ephesus; discovered by Roman authorities on their way back to their home; martyred for the faith.

We pray for all those affected by Hurricane Florence and for those who tirelessly work to aid them

Pondering Priesthood

The Stump of Jesse WHAT? There is a factory that produces priests? When I was a child, I thought our genius

God invented a holy machine to make priests. And my wise mother patiently guided me, step by step, to understand what a vocation is. God has a special call for each one of us: one is called to get married; one is called to be a priest; another is called to be a religious sister or brother; or to live a single life. Then my mother asked me to pray for my vocation, to open my ears attentively, to listen to what God is communicating to me and to respond to His call joyfully.

One day, after listening to the homily, I ran back home in a hurry and told my mom that God had called me to be a good shepherd. From that day on, I took care of the family cows seriously. I gave them names; I sang to them and recited many stories and poems to them. I led them to green pastures and clear water. You might think that I was a crazy kid. Indeed, I was. ;-)One time, while the cows were eating at a free-range field, there was a super heavy rainstorm. I didn’t know what to do to keep the cows dry so I knelt among them, folded my hands and prayed to God and Mother Mary to stop the rain. Well, it is now several years later and I am almost a priest. Words cannot express how happy and fulfilled I am. I always felt connected to the prophet Jeremiah because God called him when he was very young as well. So, it is never too early to pray for your vocation.

Priests first come from their families. It is the family that encourages their children, grandchildren, or friends to discern their vocations under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Will we shy away from doing so because of the scandal that is happening in the Church and neglect this mission? No, we should fold our hands and pray to God and the Virgin Mary to stop the abuse and to heal the abused. We should also be honest with ourselves, fight for what we believe in, be great examples of Jesus’ discipleship to the world, and have the courage to follow God’s invitation.

Our parish is going to have the “Jeremiah’s Cup” ministry intentionally pray for vocations, so please stay tuned for further information. Deacon Ton Nguyen

Reflections from the Man in the Middle

Viewing God’s World

I am sure most of you have experienced insensitivity from some people around you. Most of the time, these feelings are quite intense and upsetting. Insensitivity, or lack of understanding on the part of others, makes us view them as strangers, even if they are near and dear to us. I remember when I got the news that my father had passed away suddenly from a serious stroke and brain hemorrhage. I was returning to Chicago after my vacation at home, where I had spent quality time with him. I was in England when I received the news, and purchased a ticket to return home with the help of my friend who lived in London. I can never forget that agonizing plane journey. It was a long flight--nine hours that felt like ninety. The one thing I remember about the flight is that while I was reeling in emotional torments and sadness, the people around me enjoyed their journey. Of course, they were completely oblivious to what was going on within me. The person who sat next to me was watching movies non-stop and none of his enjoyment made any sense to me at all; I felt like some of the fellow passengers were from another planet. In truth, they had no idea about my situation, or knew that I was flying home to bury my father. Just imagine a situation in our lives where we deal with some intense sadness and our near and dear ones are aware of our situation, yet they behave with insensitivity. Jesus is in a similar situation in today’s gospel. He is telling them about the days ahead of Him and telling them about His mission to carry the cross and to undergo a painful death; the agony of the cross troubles Him. But the disciples don’t get it; they are not able to sympathize with Him at all. Rather, they are worried and concerned about who is the greatest among them, or who will occupy positions of power and authority in His kingdom. The next time we undergo a similar situation of feeling totally misunderstood in our life, let’s think about Christ’s experience with His disciples. Fr. Tomy

Eighth grade retreat provides first of many memories for class of 2019

Annually, the Park Ridge Police Chaplains host a 9/11 Memorial Service coordinated by the Park Ridge Police and Fire Department staffs. This year’s service, held at 8 a.m. at City Hall on Tuesday, September 11, included Honor Guards from both the Police and Fire Departments. The National Anthem was led by the Roosevelt Elementary School choir. An invocation was offered by MSW’s Father Tim Anastos. Remarks were offered by several including Mayor

Maloney. Among the student speakers was Jacob Barnett, an MSW 7th grade student. Jacob did an outstanding job representing the school, first responders, his family, and himself. He is pictured here with Park Ridge Police Chief Frank Kaminski and Mayor Marty Maloney. Congratulations, Jacob, for preparing a most impressive speech.

Our Parish School Highlights

Early Friday morning, September 7, fifty eighth graders and their homeroom teachers, Mrs. Judie Zoromski and Miss Kim Trocchio, boarded a bus and headed to Lake Geneva to participate in a team-building day at Covenant Harbor. During the morning segment, the students experienced team building as a large group. The ice-breaking exercises took place on a huge field. After the initial activities, the class was split into three segments and they headed off into wooded areas to face different obstacles and challenges including rope-swinging from platform to platform. The students were given a short lunch break and then spent the rest of the time allotted working the high ropes course and facing the huge rock wall. The day ended with each student taking a thrilling ride down the zip line! The classmates learned new things about each other and built bonds that will tie them together for the year, a year filled with academics and robotics, with conversations about the challenges of growing up in such a fast-paced demanding world, with high school placement exams, Confirmation, a play, and graduation festivities. The year ahead offers challenges and opportunities. After their trip to Snake Road, these eighth graders are better equipped as a class to face the year ahead!

Rose for Life A MSW Respect Life Ministry Activity This week’s Rose for Life at Mary’s shrine is donated by Edward Petrowski in loving memory of wife and mother, Jean Petrowski This week’s Rose for Life at St. Joseph’s shrine is donated by Marie Wright in loving memory of her husband, David Wright. To honor Mary, our parish patroness and St. Joseph, Protector of the Holy Family, single long-stemmed roses will be placed at both shrines each week before the weekend liturgies. The roses symbolize the Church’s respect for life at all stages and the hope that abortion will soon be a thing of the past. Each week, two roses are dedicated to loved ones by families or members of our parish. If you wish to donate a rose, please call Becky Roller at 847-825-1353. A donation of $5 is requested per rose.
