BARNS FILLED WITH RICHES The mortgage is paid off. So are the loans that were taken out for college tuition and children’s weddings. The second home that was once a far-off dream is now so close that it seems safe to dig out the real estate magazines. And then . . . a daughter or son can no longer take care of a child. It’s time to start over, this time as grandparents in the parents’ role. Thousands of older adults face this situation today, becoming temporary or permanent guardians of their grandchildren. Vanity of vanities. The years of toil with sights set on a great reward now belong to someone else: food, clothing, braces, summer camps, and school tuition. But, as one grandmother said of her 13-year-old granddaughter, Megan, “It has all been worth it. She brings such joy. What would I do without her?” And so the barns filled with “riches” are again taken down and new and true riches are discovered. Once again a new self is found in Christ, and the storehouse is filled with life that is truly pleasing to God.

Pero, como dijo una abuela de su nieta de 13 años, “Todo ha valido la pena. Ella me da una enorme alegría. ¿Qué haría yo sin ella?” Y así el granero lleno de “bienes” se vacía y descubrimos nuevas y verdaderas riquezas. Otra vez encontramos nueva vida en Cristo, y el almacén se llena de la vida que realmente agrada a Dios.

The Tri-Parish Picnic

Our Annual Tri-Parish Picnic (Santa Rosa, St. Ferdinand & Mary Immaculate) will be on Sunday August 25th. Prayer & Life Workshop Would you like to know how to go about seeking God in prayer, and what happens when you do? Do you want to be filled with peace that surpasses all understanding? Come join a workshop for learning how to pray. The 15 Prayer and Life Workshop sessions provide a care-fully structured school for learning and practicing the art of prayer. You will learn how to pray and you will become more familiar with the Bible by using it to seek God during the workshop sessions and during your private times for prayer and meditation. Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios “No puedes llevarte nada contigo; nunca he visto un coche fúnebre jalando una camioneta de mudanza”, decía siempre la tía Fran-cisca. Dedicamos mucho esfuerzo en hacer dinero, en nuestras familias, en planear nuestra jubilación y en administrar nuestras in-versiones. Sin embargo no tenemos ningún control acerca de aquel momento en que se nos pedirá la vida. Y ojalá no sea la riqueza el único “tesoro” que “almacenemos”. Tenemos muchas maneras de preservar una falsa seguridad y de enmascarar la vulnerabilidad que todos los humanos compartimos. Podemos instalar un sistema de seguridad, vivir en una urbanización privada o comprarnos un arma de fuego. Podemos comprarnos una camioneta SUV con frenos anti-bloqueantes. Podemos almacenar las buenas obras, para sentirnos ufanos y autosuficientes, o los rencores, que adeuden a otros a favor nuestro. Las Escrituras de hoy nos recuerdan que todo con lo que contamos para sentirnos más seguros es pura “vanidad”.

Reflecting on God’s Word “You can’t take it with you,” Aunt Frances used to say. “I never saw a hearse pulling a U-Haul.” Aunt Frances had a point. We ex-pend a lot of effort making money for our families, planning for retirement, and managing our investments. Yet we have no control over when our lives will be demanded of us. And wealth may not be the only “treasure” that we “store up.” We have many ways to preserve a false sense of security, to mask the vulnerability that we humans share. We may install security systems, move into gated communities, or buy a gun. We may buy SUVs with antilock brakes. We may store up good deeds that allow us to feel smug and self-satisfied, or grudges that put others in our debt. The scriptures today remind us that whatever we might

“Éste es mi Hijo amado; estoy muy complacido con él. ¡Escúchenlo! “(Mt. 17: 5)

Este versículo corresponde a la transfiguración de Jesús en el monte Tabor. Tres discípulos acompañaban a Jesús: Pedro, Santiago y Juan. Los discípulos tenían miedo de bajar a Jerusalén, donde les espera el sufrimiento a causa de la palabra de Jesús, por eso prefieren la tranquilidad de la montaña. Con la transfiguración, símbolo de la resu-rrección, Jesús quiere tranquilizarlos confirmando que la vida finalmente triunfara frente la muerte. Dios, nuestro Padre nos invita constantemente a escuchar a su Hijo querido y predilecto todos los días de nuestra vida. La palabra y el mensaje de Jesús lo encontra-mos de manera especial en los cuatro Evangelios (Mateo, Marcos, Lucas y Juan). Leer, meditar y vivir el Evangelio cada día debe convertirse en una práctica diaria para todo cristiano. El relato de la transfiguración de Jesús (Mt. 17:1-9) debe ser una experiencia extraordinaria que transfigure nuestro miedo en gozo y que nos anime a bajar de la montaña para enfrentar la realidad con la Palabra de Dios y con el testimonio.

Escuchemos a Jesús, cada día, atentamente y con profundidad, que nos transformará cada día nuestra vida.

“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” (Mt 17:5)

This verse corresponds to the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor. Three disciples accompanied Jesus: Peter, James and John. The disciples were afraid to go to Jerusalem, where suffering awaits them because of the word of Jesus, so they preferred the tranquility of the mountain. With the transfiguration, symbol of resurrection, Je-sus wants to reassure confirming that life finally triumphed against death. God our Father invites us constantly to listen to His dear and beloved Son every day of our lives. The word and the message of Jesus is found in a special way in the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). Read, meditate and live the Gospel every day should become a daily practice for all Christians. The account of the Transfiguration of Jesus (Matthew 17:1-9) should be an extraordinary experience that transfigure our fear into joy and encourage us to come down from the mountain to face reality with the Word of God and the testimony.

Listen to Jesus, every day, carefully and in depth, it will transform our lives every day.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When Pope Pius XII died in 1958, there was the usual buzz of speculation about likely successors. Cardinal Agajanian, Patriarch of the Armenians, was highly thought of as a likely choice. This took many Catholics by surprise, since he had never celebrated the same liturgy as Pope Pius, but followed ancient Armenian customs according to the Eastern Church, which veils the Eucharisic liturgy from sight by a series of curtains, and in which the priest kneels while the people stand for Communion. In the years that followed, the Second Vatican Council would affirm the dignity and independence of the Eastern Churches, in complete union with Rome, yet different in patterns of life and worship. We have the same faith, the same sacraments, and the same pope. Yet everywhere in the world our separate Churches are combined into families held together by the ministry of bishops. All of this serves as warning: If you ever say, “But we’ve always done it this way,” you are on very thin ice indeed!

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Del 1 al 5 de agosto los capitalinos en El Salvador celebran la fiesta del Salvador del Mundo, cuando recuerdan la Transfiguración de Jesús en el Monte Tabor. Como muchas fiestas patronales en Latinoa-mérica esta semana está llena de carnavales y desfiles. La celebración principal es una procesión religiosa con la imagen de Jesús, el Divino Salvador del mundo. La estatua de Jesús con sus brazos extendidos en bendición es llevada desde la Basílica del Sagrado Corazón hasta la Catedral Metropolitana. Vestida de un rojo que recuerda su pasión, la imagen es cargada sobre los hombros de una veintena de fieles. Al lle-gar a la catedral la imagen patronal es puesta en una torre de más de 20 metros de alto. Eventualmente la estatua revestida de blanco aparece de una esfera encima de la torre en medio de gritos, aplausos y cantos. Esta esfera azul representa el mundo entero, mundo salvado por Cristo. La transfiguración de esta imagen en San Salvador recuerda la pasión y resurrección de Jesús, eventos claves que han hecho de él, el Salvador del Mundo entero.
