with death if they don’t convert to Islam, pay a tax, or flee insurgent-held areas by Saturday. The insurgents, who belong to a group that calls itself Islamic State, made the threat Thursday over mosque loudspeakers and from cars driving through the city streets, residents said. They re-iterated the declaration in a flier distributed to worshippers who attended Friday prayers...Islamic State fighters began marking Christian-owned homes and businesses with the Arabic letter for “N,” the first letter of a Quranic word for Christians. (“Christians in Iraq Get Death Threats”, July 19th-20, 2014)
Reporting on the flight of the Christians, The New York Times gave the following details:
On Saturday to meet a deadline by the ISIS militants, most Christians in Mosul, a community almost as old as Christianity itself, left with little more than the clothes they were wearing. Some went on foot, their cars having been confiscated; other rode bicycles or motor scooters. Few were able to take anything of value, as militants seized their money and jewelry. Some—just a few, and because they were not healthy enough to flee—submitted to demands that they convert to Islam to avoid being killed….In a public address, Pope Francis expressed his concern for the Christians of Mosul and other parts of the Middle East, ‘where they have lived since the beginning of Christianity, together with their fellow citizens, offering a meaningful contribution to the good of society.’ He continued: ‘Today, they are persecuted and hunted away; they leave their homes without being allowed to take anything with them.’ (“Concern and Support for Iraqi Christians Forced by Militants to Flee Mosul”, Monday, July 21st, 2014)
This suffering of the Body of Christ in the persons of the Christian expellees of Iraq demands our attention and the charity of our prayers, especially since the community of Our Lady of Mesopotamia is now part of our
extended parish family. (Fr. Higgins)
THE CALVARY OF THE IRAQI CHRISTIANS
The head-line news is filled with war news and calamity, from Israel and the Gaza Strip to Russia’s proxy-war against Ukraine, so much so that the wholesale destruction of Iraq’s Christian communities in those parts of the country which have fallen to the Islamic State in recent weeks do not receive the attention it should.
Last Saturday evening, the members of our Iraqi community Our Lady of Mesopotamia gathered here at Mary Immaculate for their Mass under the burden of the news that the Christians of Mosul and the Ninevah province were being expelled en masse. Many of the Community originate from these places and still have family and friends there. The Wall Street Journal reported in their weekend edition:
The Islamic militants who seized large swaths of Iraq last month have threatened Christians

GOSPEL OF SAINT LUKE BIBLE STUDY
(Luke 10:25-37)
The parable of the Good Samaritan (a familiar story) is preceded by an exchange between Jesus and a lawyer, who was seeking to "test" Him, by asking how He might "inherit eternal life" (v. 25). Jesus prompts the lawyer to answer his own question, in light of the
teaching of the Law. The lawyer correctly identifies love as the root of all the commandments, and therefore, as the key to heaven: "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself" (v. 27, cf. Deut. 6:5, Lev. 19:18). Many scripture passages reiterate this. For example, St. Paul teaches us that "[l]ove does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law" (Rom. 13:10). The lawyer probes further, however, seeking more specific instructions from Jesus regarding the definition of one's "neighbor" (v. 29). The implied question is how far one's charity really has to go. It is similar to the question asked by Cain: "Am I my brother's keeper?" (cf. Gen. 4:9). The parable of the Good Samaritan is Jesus' response to this question. In summary, it is the Samaritan, the half-Jewish pariah, who turns out to be the compassionate hero. In v. 33, the Greek word for the Samaritan's
SCRIPTURE STUDY COLUMN
KNOW YOUR CATHOLIC FAITH
compassion evokes a visceral sense of "feeling it in his gut," a powerful kind of sympathy to which we all can relate. Having finished the story, Jesus calls upon the lawyer to answer his own question: "'Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers' victim?' He answered, 'The one who treated him with mercy.' Jesus said to him, 'Go and do likewise'" (vv. 36-37). Jesus' command to exercise boundless charity echoes His earlier teaching in the Sermon on the Plain, as the notes of the New American Bible indicate: "...if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?....love your enemies and do good to them....Be merciful just as your Father is merciful" (cf. 6:32, 35-36). Loving others means actively willing and working for their good, even when it is difficult. An examination of conscience is a good place to begin: confessing our daily occasions of irritability, uncharitableness, and complacency. To become Good Samaritans like Jesus Himself, however, we also need to rely on His charity in the sacraments. St. Augustine, who provides an allegorical interpretation of this parable, can prove helpful here. He equates the dying victim with mankind, robbed by the devil of God's grace. The priest and the Levite signify the inability of the Law (man's efforts apart from divine grace) to bring salvation. The Samaritan, by contrast, signifies Christ who shows mercy, pouring out His healing grace in the oil and wine of the sacraments. Christ then brings us to the inn of the Church, where we continue to partake of his divine life in the sacraments. In order to manifest a charity like Christ's, we need a mighty infusion of grace, for we are wounded victims, and charity does not come naturally to us. Thankfully, Christ meets us in our brokenness with the efficacious grace of His charity in the sacraments. Consequently, we can draw upon the infinite store of his boundless charity in order to meet the demands of life that vehemently test our limited charity. Only by encountering Christ's mercy can we be icons of the same, and thereby, enter the life of heaven.

MISSIONARY PREACHER: HIS
EXCELLENCY MOST REVEREND
DONALD PELLETIER
“Having brought the fullness of Life to our world
when He rose from the dead, Jesus sent His
disciples to share this life with all of creation.
‘They went forth and preached everywhere.’ (Mk
16:20). The Missionaries of Our Lady of La
Salette minister to people of every race, language,
culture and way of life—beginning at the La
Salette Shrine in France where our Blessed
Mother appeared in 1846. Her final words: ‘Well,
my children, you will make this known to all
people,’ echo Jesus’ Gospel mandate. It is little
wonder that the La Salette Congregation has
always been mission oriented. When called upon
by the Holy See to preach Gospel in foreign lands,
they eagerly responded. This spirit brought them
to mission in 27 countries, especially among the
poor in Angola, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Haiti,
India, Madagascar, Myanmar and the
Philippines. With your co-operation, the
Missionaries of La Salette can continue to provide
spiritual and financial assistance to these mission
countries as they bring God’s reconciling message
to the poor.

ABOUT OUR PARISH
Parish Mission Statement
“What then is a parish? It is the smallest section of the one universal flock which
has been entrusted to Peter by the Lord. Under the
authority of a responsible priest who has received the care of souls from his bishop, the parish is, within the Church of Jesus
Christ, the first community of Christian life; it is a community cut to human dimensions, in which
the shepherd can know his flock and the flock can know their shepherd … At the heart of this area, we find the parish church with its bell-tower, its
baptistery, its confessional, its altar and tabernacle, a symbol of unity and the centre of community
life.”
(Pope Paul VI, Supreme Pontiff 1963-1978)

SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
INTROIT: Psalm 46:2 Clap your hands, all ye nations: shout unto God with the voice of joy. Ps. 46:3 For the Lord is the most high, He is terrible; He is a great King over all the earth. V. Glory be to the Father.
COLLECT O God, whose providence in the ordering of all things never fails; we humbly beseech Thee to put away from us all harmful things, and to give us those things which are profitable for us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
EPISTLE: Romans 6:19-23. Brethren; I speak a human thing, because of the infirmity of your flesh; for as you have yielded your members to serve uncleanness and iniquity unto iniquity, so now yield your members to serve justice unto sanctification. For when you were the servants of sin, you were free from justice. What fruit therefore had you then in those things, of which you are now ashamed? For the end of them is death. But now, being made free from sin, and become servants to God, you have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end life everlasting. For the wages of sin is death. But the grace of God is life everlasting; in Christ Jesus our Lord.
GRADUAL: Psalm 33:12,6. Come, children, hearken to me: I will teach you the fear of the Lord. V. Come ye to Him and be enlightened; and your faces shall not be confounded. Alleluia, alleluia. V. O clap your hands, all ye nations; shout unto God with the voice of joy. Alleluia.
GOSPEL: Matthew 7:15-21. At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: Beware of false prophets, who come to you in the clothing of sheep, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. By their fruits you shall know them. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit, and the evil tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can an evil tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit shall be cut down, and shall be cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits you shall know them. Not everyone that saith to Me: Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of My Father who is in heaven, he shall enter into the kingdom of heaven.
OFFERTORY: Daniel 3:40 As in holocausts of rams and bullocks, and as in thousands of fat lambs; so let our sacrifice be made in Thy sight this day, that it may please Thee: for there is no confusion to them that trust in Thee, O Lord.
SECRET O God who in this one sacrifice, hast perfected the offering of the many victims prescribed under the Old Law: receive this same sacrifice offered by Thy devoted servants and sanctify it with a blessing, like unto that which Thou didst bestow upon the offerings of Abel, that what each one of us has brought here to the glory of Thy name, may profit all unto salvation. Through our Lord.
Preface of the Holy Trinity
COMMUNION: Psalm 30:3. Bow down Thy ear, make haste to deliver me.
POSTCOMMUNION: May Thy healing work in our souls mercifully free us from our perverse inclinations,
O Lord, and lead us ever to do that which is right in Thy sight. Through our Lord.
