THE REIGN OF BENEDICT XVI, 265th POPE OF THE UNIVERSAL

CHURCH, A.D. 2005-2013

FFFFew world events really catch us by surprise as did Pope Benedict XVI’s low-key announcement before his Cardinals this past Monday that he was renouncing his Papal Office. The news media has struggled to find precedents for such a resignation in Church history but there really has not been a papal resignation quite like it. The nearest point of reference is the dramatic renunciation of Pope Celestine V in A.D. 1294, who reigned as Pope for only a few months. But in this case, Pope Celestine was so obviously out of his depth, the governance of the Church so thrown into chaos by his ineptitude, that his voluntary resignation was a relief.

Pope Benedict’s case is not at all like this. He has governed the Church ably as her Chief Pastor for nearly eight years, steering the barque of Peter with grace and courage through the inevitable stormy waters of human events. He has done—efficiently, cleanly, and without drama—what has been noised about for quite some time: given the modern demands of the Papacy, could or should a Pope resign if he

finds himself no longer up to the task? Pope Benedict has answered for himself in the affirmative. And he has done so in such a way that it causes no crisis or state-of-emergency in the Church. A papal reign will quietly end; a conclave of Cardinals will be duly held, and a new Pope elected. The mission of the Church goes on.

How poignant that the Holy Father should have chosen the Feast of Lourdes, February 11th, designated by John Paul II as the World Day of the Sick, for his historic announcement. It is as if he is enrolling himself now among the Suffering Sick in the Body of the Church, who serve the Church no less with their prayer and suffering. Also, the official observance of this year’s World Day of the Sick was held at the Marian Shrine of Altötting, Austria. This shrine is near to the Pope’s boyhood home in Bavaria. In his Memoir Milestones (1997) he writes of it: “And I must not forget to note that Marktl [his birthplace] is very close to Altötting, the venerable and ancient Marian Shrine dating from the Carolingian era, which since the Middle Ages has become the great pilgrimage site for Bavaria and western Austria. Just in those years [1920s] Altötting received new renown with the beatification and then the canonization of Brother Konrad Parzham (1818-1894), a Capuchin who had been porter of his monastery. In this humble and thoroughly kind man we saw what is best in our people embodied and led by faith to its most beautiful possibilities. I have often reflected since then on this remarkable disposition of Providence: that in the century of progress and faith in science, the Church should have found herself represented most clearly in very simple people, in a Bernadette of Lourdes, for instance, or even in a Brother Konrad, who hardly seemed to be touched by the currents of the time...I do think that precisely these “little” saints are a great sign to our time, a sign that moves me ever more deeply, the more I live with and in our time.”

FRIDAY DEVOTIONS DURING LENT: “VIA CRUCIS”—TRADITIONAL

For He saith: In an accepted time have I heard thee, and in the day of salvation have I helped thee. Behold, now is the acceptable time, behold now is the day of salvation. Giving no offence to any man that our ministry be not blamed: but in all things let us exhibit ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in tribulation, in necessities, in distresses, in stripes, in prisons, in seditions, in labours, in watchings, in fastings, in chastity, in knowledge, in longsuffering, in sweetness, in the Holy Ghost, in charity unfeigned, in the word of truth, in the power of God: by the armour of justice on the right hand and on the left: by honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers and yet true, as unknown and yet known: as dying, and behold we live: as chastised and not killed: as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing: as needy, yet enriching many: as having nothing and possessing all things.

He will overshadow thee with His shoulders, and under His wings thou shalt trust. V. His truth shall compass thee with a shield: thou shalt not be afraid of the terror of the night. V. Of the arrow that flieth in the day, of the business that walketh about in the dark, of invasion or of the noonday devil. V. A thousand shall fall at thy side and ten thousand at thy

right hand: but it shall not come nigh thee. V. For He hath given His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. V. In their hands they shall bear thee up, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. V. Thou shalt walk upon the asp and the basilisk, and thou shalt trample under foot the lion and the dragon. V. Because he hoped in Me I will deliver him: I will protect him, because he hath known My name. V. He shall cry to Me, and I will hear him: I am with him in tribulation. V. I will deliver him, and I will glorify him: I will fill him with length of days, and I will show him My salvation.

GOSPEL: Matthew 4: 1-11 At time Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert, to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards He was hungry. And the tempter coming said to Him: If Thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. Who answered and said: It is written: Not in bread alone doth man live, but in every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God. Then the devil took Him up into the holy city and set Him upon the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him: If Thou be the Son of God, cast Thyself down. For it is written: That He hath given His angels charge over Thee, and in their hands shall they bear Thee up, lest perhaps Thou dash Thy foot against a stone. Jesus said to him: It is written again: Thou shalt not tempt the Lord Thy God. Again the devil took Him up into a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them, and said to Him: All these will I give Thee, if falling down Thou wilt adore me. Then Jesus saith to him: Be gone, Satan! For it is written: The Lord thy God shalt thou adore, and Him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil left Him: and behold angels came, and ministered to Him.
