Artists Statement: Mary Alice Orito/MAO

Over the course of my multiple careers, first as a jewelry designer, then a sportswear designer, a costume designer, a psychotherapist and now mixed media artist, I have been fascinated by craft, illusion, texture, line, space, objects, decoration, surfaces and the intuitive process of arrangement, deconstruction/construction of texture often associated with mixed media

By layering and feathering torn pieces of paper, I create a dimension of multiple shadows, atmospheric space, texture and undulating rhythms. I enjoy finding objects and exploring ideas of renewal or transformation of the object. I am delighted by the subjective process of the viewer as they access their memories and emotional history while defining and enjoying my work. There is a ‘shared connection’ with the viewers’ recognition of the identity of the found object/s within a piece and its’ new purpose. As in life, few things are as they seem.
