Middle East African Conference Rakshen Moonia, Form 4, was chosen to attend the Middle East African Conference in Durban as a representative of Maritzburg College. The theme was:

"DIVERSITY IS THE ONE THING WE ALL HAVE IN COMMON, CELEBRATE IT EVERYDAY"

As South Africa has a diverse culture, the People to People International World Forum decided to host their conference in South Africa. Rakshen was asked to present and talk about himself as a Hindu and Indian in South Africa. The group spent five days in and around Durban and visiting the Horizon Farm was one of the highlights. The forum was addressed by Mary Jean Eisenhower. Rakshen had an wonderful insight into people living with disabilities and will assist Megan van Eck (The President of the People to People Chapter) at Hillcrest High School in the endeavour to assist the underprivileged. In line with the Employment Equity Act of South Africa he is now aware that all people need employment opportunities. He will be attending various People to People International Leadership Conferences.

BURIED CHILD This post-modern look at Mid-Western American families was certainly one of the best ever plays that have been showcased at College recently. Mr Barbour and his well chosen cast did a stellar job in handling very controversial and sensitive subject matter. Mr Barbour’s professional manner utilising in directing productions does College proud and we are fortunate to have him in the Drama department. Special mention should be made of the incredible acting that T Willows did as a drunk, broken down old man. We are looking forward to see him on the world stage in the future!

GEOGRAPHY Mr. Andrew MacFarland of SURMAC gave a talk on Land Surveying to some of the 4th Form Geographers. The boys pick a topic of their choice that is related to geography and study it then design a presentation for their peers. F. Lane chose land surveying and he worked with Mr. MacFarland on his topic. He told us how he has orientated and been involved with the erection of power lines though Africa right up to the Congo! He regaled the class with stories of his work, outdoors and in very interesting places, and he allowed the boys to use his instruments and take measurements. It was a great experience for the boys and they enjoyed learning outside of the classroom.

College vs D.H.S. (Goldstones) (Limited to 50 overs) College won the toss and elected to bat first. Kewan Harries and Josh Rencken got the team off to a solid start. However, after advancing the total to 60/0 after 15 overs, the 10 overs before tea yielded just 30 runs as they got themselves bogged down. After the tea interval Rencken was out softly for 35, scored off a mammoth 97 balls and Harries followed in the same over for 51 scored off 66 balls. (94/2 after 27 overs). Calvin Savage (4 off 9 balls) came and went to a soft dismissal, (102/3 after 29 overs), and a patient partnership of 33 off 47 balls between Gareth Orr (27 off 43 balls) and Greg Miller (15 off 17 balls) was ended when Miller played an immature shot to lose his wicket with the total on 135/4 after 37 overs. Orr followed in similar vein two overs later with the total on 140/5 and this brought Grant Glutz to the crease to join Tim Guise-Brown. A brisk 37 run partnership off just 30 balls was broken when Glutz (14 off 12 balls) got out softly, only to be followed by Guise-Brown (23 off 29 balls), who also gave his wicket away at a critical stage of the innings, with the College total on 184/7 after 46 overs. Stefan Ungerer (14 off 14 balls) and Andy Charters (10 off 13 balls) got the total to 206. After lunch College dropped both DHS openers within the first 3 overs and this allowed them to settle and add 30 for the first wicket. Lionel Fouche, standing in as a opening bowler for the absent Daryn Dupavillon who was away at the National U17 Camp, induced a poor shot from van Heerden (20 off 18 balls) for Fezile Memela to take the catch. The second DHS wicket fell with their total on 69 when Guise-Brown and Memela combined to give the former his only wicket. At the halfway stage of their innings DHS were well-placed with their total on 90/2 and clearly in a position to push for a win. In the second over after tea Fouche nipped one through the defence of DHS Captain Grewar (38 off 79 balls) and at 100/3 the game was still there for anyone’s taking. Kotze (33 off 55 balls) and Bosch (16 off 34 balls) added 42 runs for the 4th wicket which fell when Calvin Savage came on for a third spell to rip the heart out of the DHS middle order, taking 3 wickets in two overs of aggressive pace and suddenly DHS were 153/7 after 42 overs. With 7 overs remaining and 48 runs wanted, Memela and Charters came back for second spells. They got into the DHS tail and in the 49th over the DHS innings came to a standstill with their total on 177. Savage (3/20 in 9 overs), Fouche (2/32 in 10 overs) and Charters (2/30 in 9,4 overs) had been the pick of the College attack. The second half of the DHS innings had seen the intensity of the College effort increase and DHS, after having made a good fight of the game, were found wanting being just 29 runs short of the College total. College 206/10 in 50 overs (Harries 51; Rencken 35) D.H.S. 177/10 in 48,4 overs (Savage 3/20) College won by 29 runs

THE BURLY BEARS The Burly Bears started as an initiative to show that typical (somewhat big-boned) SA manne really do care about the ladies and that we are prepared to get out of our comfort zones to support Pink Drive! Pink Drive is a non profit organisation that runs free breast screening clinics and raises awareness about Breast Cancer. With the aid of the wise and wonderful Carlos Gonzalez at Spanafrican Adventures, we have completed four progressively more challenging Drakensberg hikes and on 1 October we will be starting the Drakensberg Grand Traverse. We only have 7 days up our sleeves to complete the 210 km and we plan to push ourselves to the limit to get it done in or under the time we have available! We are on Facebook as 'Burly Bears for Breasts' and on www.pinkdrive.co.za under 'Supporters/Champions'. Donations can be done on the Pink Drive site or by SMSing 'breast' to 36560 and donating R10. Huge thanks also to the our wonderful sponsors Jim Green Footwear, High Altitude Indoor Climbing PMB , CPW Printers, Parklane Spar and Pink Drive!
