From the HeadmasterDear Members of the Marist College Ashgrove family,

Three years ago I was fortunate enough to travel overseas with the Marist Principals’ Study Tour. We travelled to Paris, Lyon and Rome. My predecessor Br Neville Solomon was our guide extraordinaire. His knowledge of St Marcellin and the history of the Brothers is amazing. Whilst in Rome he took us to the four major Basilicas of Rome:

• San Pietro (St. Peter’s)• San Giovanni in Laterano (St John Lateran the Basilica of Rome)• San Paolo fuori le Mura (St Paul outside the Walls)• Santa Maria Maggiore (St Mary Major)

Personally I was in awe of St Paul outside the Walls. It is “outside” the Ancient Walls of Rome but I was really struck by its true sense of a place of worship – quiet and reflective. It was originally built in the fourth century by the Roman Emperor Constantine on the spot indicated by tradition as the tomb of Paul the Apostle. The Basilica as we know it today, is based on a Latin cross plan, is 131 metres long, 65 metres wide and 30 metres high. Br Neville took us into the Basilica via a side entrance so it was only when you entered that you realised the enormity of it. St Paul’s contribution to the Church was enormous, constantly visiting and writing to the Christian people of Rome, Corinth, Galatia, Ephesus, Colossae and any other of the early Christian communities. St Paul is a great model for us. Fr Pius spoke about St Paul in one of his homilies recently. He said St Paul’s greatest gift was his determination….he refused to give up. At Assembly yesterday Fr Pius read to the boys from the Acts of the Apostles (18:1-8). It was an account of St Paul arguing with the Jews and the Greeks in the synagogue in Corinth. When the Jews opposed and reviled him he went next door to the house of a man named Titius Justus who was a believer. There, “Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue believed in the Lord, together with all his household; and many of the Corinthians hearing Paul believed and were baptized (18:8).” In spite of adversity and threats to his life, St Paul believed in what he was called to be and refused to give up.

From the Headmaster Continued...

I recently used the trailer of the film “Rudy” at Assembly to exemplify the idea of never giving up. I asked Foundation Manager, Wayne Hansen, on a recent boarding visit for his three favourite “never give up” stories. One he told me involved Old Boy and former Wallaby Captain John Eales. It was in a 1999 World Cup Quarter Final against England. Rob Andrew, the English five –eight, made a clean break and seemed destined to score the try that would put Australia out of the World Cup. John (a forward) chased down Rob Andrew and made a try saving tackle “with his fingertips”. A great example of a never give up attitude.

So the message is clear. In this day and age we need to be strong in our convictions and be resilient enough to persevere even when things seem far too difficult.

St Marcellin wanted “Good Christians and Good Citizens” from the students in his schools. Let’s assist our boys to adopt that “never give up” attitude.

Yours in Jesus, Mary and St MarcellinPeter McLoughlin

Headmaster’s NotesYeAR oF GRACeNext Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. We acknowledge it as the birthday of the church. Significantly this year, Pentecost Sunday will be the commencement of the Year of Grace. The Most Reverend Mark Coleridge DD, Archbishop of Brisbane describes, “The Year of Grace is a time for a change of heart, a time to come to the feast as daughters and sons of the Father. It’s a time to start afresh from Christ. That’s as true for you who are young as it is for us that are older and it’s true for you now, not just in the future. Now is the time for you to be the disciples and missionaries, even the saints, whom Jesus sends into the world in our time and our place.”

WALkAThon AnD BATTLe oF The BAnDSYet another wonderful day shone through for the Marist College Ashgrove family. Sincere thanks to all who contributed to an excellent fundraiser for the P&F and congratulations to the boys who won Battle of the Bands – Michael Wing, Joe Kneipp, Rory Driscoll, Jack Silversmith, and Kevin Birney. Further congratulations to our Walkathon co-ordinators Marty Kerwin, Ian Warmington, Alastair Smith, Ray Celegato, John Scherer, Deb Moloney and Roberta Bannah and Alan and Adele Hamilton for their wonderful organisation of the day.

oLD BoYS’ SPoRTS DAYLast Saturday was certainly a special day at the College. We had the official opening and blessing of:

• Fr Tom Maloney Way;• John Nunan Athletic Precinct• Matthew Hayden Oval

DRANEY THEATRE7-8pm

Thursday 7TH JUNE

The College is planning to roll-out a student laptop program over the next few years. In 2013 all students in Years 8, 9 and 10 will be expected to have a laptop at school every day. Other Year levels will follow in 2014.

If this will affect you and your son, you would be most welcome to come along to this meeting where we will outline how this plan is to be managed.

There will be ample opportunity for parents to discuss the proposal and ask questions of members of our Leadership Team and IT personnel.

neWS FRoM heAD oF MISSIonDeclarations of Love – 2012 Mother-Son MassThe College chapel was over-flowing with mums, grandmothers, sons and a few brave dads for the Mother-Son Mass last week, during which a group of senior students thanked publically their mothers and stated just how significant they have been in the lives of the boys. In some quarters there was the rustle of tissues as the boys spoke from the heart and with great naturalness to the gathering. The boys’ reflections were a part of a shared homily which began with College Chaplain Fr Pius Jones SM reflecting on the hospitality that lies at the heart of a home and so often due to the selfless love of mothers being likened to the hospitality of God – the gift of love offered unconditionally, without question, without reserve. We are grateful to Fr Pius for his own warm hospitality in welcoming members of the College family around the table of the Lord; and to student organist Michael Wing, singer Joseph Kneipp, and the College liturgical choir under the direction of Ms Laura Kavanagh and Ms Kellee Green for the part they played in making the Mass a rich experience of prayer and communal worship. Congratulations to the five mothers who received a surprise Mother’s Day gift from the College.

As a Marist school we have a special devotion to and draw much inspiration from Mary, the mother of Jesus, whom St Marcellin Champagnat referred to as Notre Bonne Mere – Our Good Mother. As a memento of this year’s Mass and to remind us of the prominent place of mothers in every human life each mum and grandmother was presented with a book mark on which were some inspiring reminders:

Mothers hold their children's hands for a short while, but hold their hearts forever.

A son may outgrow a Mother’s lapbut he’ll never outgrow her heart!

Mary, our Good Mother, Pray for us.

neWS FRoM The CoLLeGe ChAPLAInRecently some Year 11 students attended the Catholic Schools Youth Ministry Australia (CSYMA) conference in Canberra. Only six of our boys were selected due to restrictions on the number that could attend from each school. Young people and teachers from all States were represented at the conference. Attending from Marist College Ashgrove were Ben Perkins, Dylan Sattolo, Will McLoughlin, Will Thompson, Joe Hennessy and Conan Russell.

None of us knew quite what to expect, except that Canberra would be cold! However after a few hours we all began to appreciate that this was a really superb opportunity for the young to share their faith and to be encouraged and strengthened by the other young people who also shared something of their story.Catholic Schools Youth Ministry Australia (CSYMA) is growing fast and because it has proved to be such a success, the idea has been sought after overseas.

Mrs Smith and I had the opportunity to see our boys outside of their own school environment, speaking about their lives and their faith in front of other young people and adults with confidence.

At the Mother/Son Mass last night, a number of these boys spoke again, very personally, about their mothers and how much their mothers mean to them. Many who were present were really touched by these young men speaking so confidently and beautifully about their mums.

At present your son in Year 9 may be applying to enroll in this curriculum based course. If he does so, and is willing to give generously to the process, he will gain a great deal. That’s our hope. The first group has been quite remarkable in their contribution to the faith and life of Marist College Ashgrove.

With every best wish and all God’s Blessings.Fr Pius Jones, S.M. - College Chaplain

neWS FRoM CAMPuS MInISTRYDear Parents, Staff and Students, It is always pleasing to observe the boys returning from a MATES ministry visit, wanting to sign up again. While we have mixed motivations to the different things we undertake in life, our boys give a clear “Yes” to generosity, giving, and Marist presence to all the different people that come their way while on MATES ministry visits.

Solidarity IMMERSIONS: An update bulletin will come out in the next fortnight to all families involved. Thank you for forwarding the $500 deposit and attending to completing of travel insurance documentation. I know passport applications are under way. Please forward the photo page of the passport when you finally receive it in the coming weeks. Any queries please contact Liz Spry at the Ministries Office to clarify any information.

22 students from Year 9 have been invited to take part in the YLEAD Leadership Conference at the Brisbane Convention Centre on the 29th May. Twelve students will travel to the Australian Catholic University, Banyo for the annual Social Justice Forum on Friday 25th May this is a great opportunity to engage with the different outreach programs operating within the Brisbane Catholic Archdiocese.

Thank you to all our families who continue to support our different endeavours throughout the term. At our Mother’s Day assembly we presented our MATES awards. These awards are presented 3 times a year in May, August, November. The boys’ hours accumulate from the Junior School through to Year 12. Pleasing to see many new faces on the list this year. The spirit of ministry, generosity and service is alive and well at the College.

David Chapman Year 12 (Rush) deserves a special mention. David was awarded his platinum MATES badge having achieved over 150 hours since Year 5. He is a delightful, respectful and generous young man who always seems to find the extra time to be involved in so many aspects of College life and beyond. He has developed a strong sense of social justice and a keen awareness of the need to reach out to others in difficulty. Congratulations David!

Please support the Immersion fundraiser below.

MASS oF CeLeBRATIon – FeAST oF ST MARCeLLIn ChAMPAGnAT 6 June 2012This year our theme across Marist Schools: Encounter - Eyes Opened, Hearts Burning, connects us to the Emmaus story in Luke 24. Such a theme relates well with our reflections on St Marcellin who was in love with his God and related passionately to Jesus. Our task as Marists, he so often reminded us, is: ‘to make Jesus Christ known and loved’. We can only do this if we often ‘encounter’ Jesus in our prayer. In his letters in particular, Marcellin’s encouragement for such a meeting with Jesus is constant: “Tell your children that Jesus and Mary love them all very much: those who are good because they resemble Jesus Christ who is infinitely good; those who are not good because they will soon become so. Tell them that the Blessed Virgin also loves them because she is the mother of all the children in our schools. And tell them that I love them very much too, and that I never say Mass without thinking of you and your dear children.…” [from Letter 21 January 1830 to Brother Barthélemy] Marcellin’s love for Jesus was overt and often expressed. Three aspects of the life of Jesus really appealed to Marcellin: Jesus in his becoming one with us as man, in his death on Calvary, and in the Eucharist: “I wish the Brothers to be untiring in their attention to the newborn Christ, to the dying Saviour and to Jesus we experience on our altars…it is above all things important for them to contemplate Jesus in the Crib, on the Cross and on the Altar.”

Mass will be celebrated in the Champagnat Centre at Marist College Ashgrove at 11.00am on Wednesday June 6. Parents and members of the community are welcome to attend. Our celebrant will be Bishop William Morris.

Assistant Head (Teaching and Learning)YeAR 12 InFoRMATIonThe next few months are full of important events for Year 12 students. This week I spoke to them about preparing for QTAC applications. Entry into Queensland University courses and many TAFE courses occurs through QTAC applications which will close at the end of September. Although this seems quite some time away, it is important that students who are still uncertain about what they want to do, start to research their options. The QTAC website is an important place to start. It includes information such as the length of the course, approximate cost of the course per year and past OP cut-offs all in a format like the example below. Other research options include the College Careers Office, University Open Days and University/TAFE websites.

QTAC CouRSe SeARCh exAMPLeBRISBAne unIVeRSITY - BACheLoR oF InnoVATIon

It is important that your sons make the most of their applications. They have the opportunity to include six preferences. Generally this includes two options which are on their ‘wish list’, two which match their last OP prediction and two which will provide entry if things don’t quite go to plan. Further information about both OP and rank calculation, QTAC and various other topics will be disseminated at the second and final Year 12 information night which will be held on 24 July.

uMATThis test is used specifically to assist with the selection of students into medicine and dentistry at the University of Queensland as well as health science degree programs at undergraduate level in other States. Applications are now open and will close on 1 June. For information: http://umat.acer.edu.au

exAMSAll Senior exams must take place on the day they are scheduled in the exam timetable. Boys who are absent on the scheduled day must provide a medical certificate and fill in the Special Consideration form found on the student intranet. They will then be allocated to sit their exam at the first opportunity on their return to the College.

YeAR 11 InFoRMATIonBy now most Year 11 students will have settled into the subjects they selected at the end of last year and will be experiencing success. The work they are completing is generally formative and provides the content and skills required to complete the subject successfully in Year 12. Students who are not experiencing success may wish to reconsider one of their choices at the end of this term. If that is the case they will need to put careful thought into whether improved study habits may mean they could continue the subject or if that course of action is out of the question, whether they would be able to put in the extra work necessary to catch up on the work already covered in a new subject. All students are strongly encouraged to keep subject changes to a minimum but if it is necessary, changing now rather than at the end of the year is recommended. Subject change forms can be located on the student intranet site and can be lodged in the last two weeks of term. Students are reminded that subject changes are not always possible due to timetable constraints and current class sizes.

YeAR 10 InFoRMATIonYear 10 students are currently engaged in the set planning process. A reminder to all students and their parents that the SET Plan document needs to be completed and lodged at the interview. Any parents or students who have not yet booked their interview need to do so as soon as possible by ringing Student Administration on 38584538 and booking an available time. Attending the interview with your son is encouraged but not compulsory. Next term the College will hold a subject information evening on 31 July. This is a continuation of the SET planning process and will culminate in a considered selection of senior subjects submitted to the College online.

Marist College AshgroveThe RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride 2012 Friday 23rd november - Sunday 2 December 2012.

Starting in Lakes Entrance and finishing in Phillip Island. The Great Victorian Bike Ride is a recreational bike ride through regional Victoria organized by Bicycle Victoria for the past 25 years. The ride takes a new route for all to experience new places each year. Five thousand participants per year are on this supported ride from campsite to campsite. There are approximately 1500 allocated places annually for school students. All roads on this 600km challenge are blocked or reduced to traffic to ensure safety for the cyclists.

All meals are provided on the ride and are included in the overall ride costs. Students will be supplied with breakfast, morning tea, lunch, dinner and dessert. Students will need to supply basic camping utensils. Accommodation is supplied in a separate and secure “Schools Only” area. The boys will camp in their own tents, normally two to a tent. Students are responsible to set up and pack up their own tents in our area each day. All tents and baggage (20kg per person) are packed by students onto trucks to be sent to the next campsite each day.

All students participating must have their own bike, (mountain, with slick tyres, or a road bike). Lunch is supplied along the route.

Entry fees on the bike ride include the following;

- 3 delicious meals per day- Fully supported and planned route with medical, mechanical and police support- Toilets, showers, laundry facilities, café, daily newspaper and radio station- Entertainment, movies every night, performers, bands, talent quest and more- Massage and First Aid- Daily transport of your luggage from site to site

The Great Victorian Bike Ride gives students the opportunity to develop many aspects of their lives that are difficult in a school setting. Opportunities away from home like this ride can assist them with short and long term goal setting, organisation, perseverance, resilience and independence.

Students and staff will fly to Melbourne on the Friday afternoon and immediately bus to Lakes Entrance, staying overnight at another school. Students will assemble their bikes the following morning and begin the 2012 Great Victorian Bike Ride.

After ten days and approximately 600kms of riding on roads of various terrains we will arrive at Phillip Island and then bus to the Melbourne Airport for their return flight home to Brisbane and their families.

To ensure the boys are adequately prepared for this experience sessions will be conducted in Term 3 and 4 in the boys own time. Rides will be around the bike paths in Brisbane and may include early morning rides as a group. Riders must complete the Brisbane to Gold Coast ride.

It is estimated the cost of the ten day experience will be approximately $1400. This will included all flights, meals, accommodation, transfers and actual cost of the ride.

The College will limit the experience to twenty boys and three staff.

Do you have a child with vision impairment? You might like to join the Australian Childhood Vision Impairment Register

The Australian Childhood Vision Impairment Register is sponsored by the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children, in partnership with families, teachers, health professionals and low vision agencies. The Register is the first of its kind in Australia, and collects data on Australian children with vision impairment. This data is used to improve services for children and by researchers who work in the area of eye disease and disorders of vision. Families are invited to register their children. The age range is 0-18 years, with any eye condition diagnosed by an eye doctor (ophthalmologist) that causes vision impairment in both eyes. Families can access our website to begin the registration process at:

www.vifamilynetwork.org.au The criteria for being included on the Register are available on this website, and if families are unsure, they can email ([email protected]) or call the Register staff, who will help out (02 9872 0303). Due to a clash with the Opera Australia season and the Queensland Youth Symphony tour we have had to change the date of this year’s concert to Monday June 4.

There will also be a rehearsal for this concert for community members on May 28 between 6.30pm and 8.30pm.

The biennial Blue & Gold Concert features the College’s top Choral and Instrumental ensembles performing with members of the College’s wider community including Old Boys, sisters, parents and teachers. The first Blue and Gold Concert was held in 2004 and proved to be great success both musically and also as a chance to catch up with friends of the College’s Music Department. This year we will see this event held again for the 4th time.

The concert takes the format of a Massed Orchestra and Choir, Massed Wind Ensemble as well as some of the student ensembles performing with soloists. This year we have planned to perform a variety of works including compositions by John Williams and Carl Maria Weber.

We are trying to contact as many people as we possibly can to be involved and we are especially looking for voices for the massed choir, string players for the Orchestra and wind & percussion players for the Wind Orchestra.

If you are interested can you please contact the Music Department as soon as possible, we will then send you more detailed information and music.

We have also posted a facebook event / Marist College Ashgrove Blue & Gold Concert / with further information.

Please email the Music Department [email protected] if you can make it. ReheARSAL SCheDuLe

Junior School NewsDear Parents,

Just recently, I read an interesting article by Father Ronald Rolheiser OMI, who is a Canadian Theologian and author. The article was titled “The ten major faith struggles of our time” and Father Rolheiser lists these for us. In the article, Father Rolheiser suggests that many Christians do not have the capacity, or inclination, to look globally. We are very pre-occupied in our own little worlds, but when we do have the courage to look further than our family, suburb, or country, our own concerns are put into perspective. “heartaches at home can make us blind to the wider concerns of the planet; just as seeing the concerns and pains of others first-hand can put our own concerns and pain into healthier perspective.”

In stating the ten struggles, the author cautions us by stating that these are for the more highly secularised parts of the world.

• The struggle to have a vital sense of God within the secular culture; the struggle to be conscious of God.

• The struggle to live in torn, divided and highly-polarised communities. The struggle inside our own wounded selves to be healers and peace-makers, rather that contributing to the tension ourselves.

• The struggle to live, love and forgive. The struggle for true sincerity; the struggle to be neither liberal or conservative, but rather men and women of true compassion.

• The struggle to carry our sexuality without undue frigidity and without irresponsibility, the struggle for a healthy sexuality that can both properly revere and properly delight.

• The struggle to have time for quietness; the struggle to move our eyes beyond our digital screens towards a deeper horizon.

• The struggle to cope, in a healthy manner, with affirmation and rejection, to find the delicate balance between depression and inflation.

• The struggle to not be motivated by paranoia, fear, narrowness and over protectionism in the face of terrorism; the struggle to not let our need for clarity and security trump compassion and truth.

• The struggle with moral loneliness; the struggle to find a soul mate.• The struggle to link faith to justice, to connect the Gospel to the street, to remain on the side of the

poor.• The struggle to find the healthy line between individuality and community, to be both mature,

spiritual and committed.

May we all, who call ourselves Christian, become more and more aware of growing into men and women of compassion.

CRoSS-CounTRYThe C.I.C Cross-Country team has finally been selected. The team was chosen based on the criteria of performances plus attendance at training and lead-up meets. It is a little disappointing that some of our better runners were not eligible for selection due to lack of attendance, however we are confident the boys who have trained hard over the past 6-8 weeks will do themselves and the College proud.

The boys selected in the CIC Cross-Country Squad will represent the College at the C.I.C. Cross-Country Carnival on Friday 1 June. This year’s C.I.C. Carnival will be held at Villanova Park, Tingalpa.

Congratulations to the following boys who were selected to represent the College at these Championships.

SeLeCTIon oF TeAMSThere are 8 teams consisting of 4 players in each team. Teams 1 – 3 ranked on ability. Team 4 is only for Year 5 players. However, if a Year 5 player is good enough to beat players in other teams they can play in those teams. Teams 5 – 8 ranked on ability.

Effectively there is a list of players ranked 1 to 32. These rankings are based on the results from the Junior School Tennis Championships. Once these rankings have been established, a player ranked in 25th spot may challenge a player in 10th spot and, if he wins, that winning player takes 10th spot and the loser drops down to 11th pushing everyone below down one spot. If the challenger loses nothing happens. As this process takes a very long time we use the whole of Term 2 to sort the boys into their rankings. A challenge consists of a one set match. First to six games, no tie breaks.
