A warm welcome to the 2007 edition of The Marist Brothers Provincial DevelopmentOffice Newsletter. We hope you enjoy browsing the pages to catch up on the excitingthings that have been happening in our office and throughout the Province over the past year.

In keeping with our tradition, we proudly include our annual Honor Roll of Donors.This is a compilation of all our donors who have so generously supported the Brothersover the course of our last fiscal year. Each year the Honor Roll increases in lengthbearing witness to the growing number of supporters of the Brothers. To each and everyone of you, we express our heartfelt thanks and gratitude.

Theodore Roosevelt once said, ”Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chanceto work hard at work worth doing.” We, in the Development Office, couldn’t agree more! With your assistance,our work is focused on providing the financial assistance the Brothers need to continue their ministries with youngpeople and to take good care of our elderly Brothers who have given so much during their lifetime. Your positiveresponse encourages us to enthusiastically continue our work for the benefit of all Marist Brothers.

This year we inaugurated a targeted Planned Giving program. Working with experts in the field, we have begunsending out issue-specific brochures and newsletters focusing on wills and other means of estate planning.Through this program we have been able to add seven new members to our Marcellin Guild just this year and haveraised awareness to the need for thoughtful estate planning.

The 2006-07 Annual Fund focused on the theme of ”Sharing Faith in Our Future.” We are grateful for the outstanding number of you who agreed that the future of the Marist Brothers is in all of our hands. We are alsograteful for the wonderful support our elderly and disabled Brothers received from our spring Retirement Appeal.

The future of the Marist Brothers is truly a joint effort. The Brothers continue to provide a quality Christian education to thousands each year aided by your support of the Brothers and their programs. The future of our elderly Brothers is also a joint effort, with your gifts allowing us to continue to provide the care they need.

With you at our side, we will continue to work to keep “Sharing Faith in Our Future.”

Every man and woman reading this newsletter needs a will.Without a will, we forfeit our legal right to control the disposition of the property we have accumulated with a lifetime of effort. And even a brief reflection shows that could never make sense.

Every will, however, should be different…each reflecting theindividual needs and the personal objectives of the testator. For some of us, a simple will can accomplish all our objectives.Others may have needs and objectives that demand a highlycomplex testamentary plan. Whether our will should be long or short, simple or complex, we can all benefit from using a five-step approach to will-making.

SStteepp OOnnee:: CCaarreeffuull RReefflleeccttiioonn

Deciding how to dispose of an estate is never a simple matter.Desires often conflict with necessities. Practical considerationsmay differ from ideals. Equality among beneficiaries may befinancially impractical. We really must think carefully about our true objectives.

A husband may think, “I want to leave everything to my wife.”Upon reflection, however, he may realize that his real objectiveis simply to provide full financial security for his wife.

A mother may think, “I want to leave $100,000 to my daughter.” Her real objective, however, may be to simply give her daughtera token of her love. Or her objective may be to provide thedaughter with a contingent security against a bad marriage, poor health or financial misfortune.

SStteepp TTwwoo:: CCoonnssuullttaattiioonn

Talk over your objectives with your advisers and get their adviceon what your will should provide. Be candid about your feelingsand the needs of your beneficiaries. Your advisers will need specific facts about your assets, your income and your obligations – as well as your sentiments and objectives. The more information you give them the better they canhelp you plan the shape of your will.

It is at this point that you can decide the specifics of your will:the amounts, percentages or specific properties to be bequeathedto each beneficiary; whether bequests are to be outright or intrust; contingency provisions; persons to be named executors,trustees or guardians; etc.

SStteepp TThhrreeee:: SSkkiillllffuull DDrraaffttiinngg

Your attorney should draft your will. It is never a do-it-yourselfproject. Indeed, you must rely on your attorney to include allthe important legal provisions that will ensure carrying out yourobjectives. He or she will be concerned about various contin-gencies, the legal powers of your executor, the source of fundsfor paying debts, costs and taxes, possible common disasters,apportionment provisions and the exact names of all beneficiaries.

Your attorney will also make sure that your will is drafted, signed and witnessed as required by state law.

SStteepp FFoouurr:: RReevviieeww YYoouurr WWiillll

Your lawyer will probably draft your will based on present conditions, laws, asset values, planning techniques, financialneeds and objectives. All these factors can change from time to time. And your will must change with them. You may need a codicil (amendment), or you may need to completely rewriteyour will.

To be safe, take the time at least once a year to review your will in light of your present circumstances; and ask your lawyerto look at your will – at least every two years – whether or notyou think you want to make changes. State law changes, newtax pitfalls or opportunities and new financial considerationsmake periodic legal reviews well worthwhile.

SStteepp FFiivvee:: SSaaffeekkeeeeppiinngg

Your skillfully drafted, up-to date will may be meaningless unless it can be found at your death. It might be a good idea to have your attorney retain the original copy. Or if you name abank as executor, the bank will generally provide safekeeping in its vaults.

However you decide to safeguard your will, it is important that it can be quickly located as soon as it is needed. Always leave word with responsible people, or make a note in your personal records, as to where your will can be found.

In 2001 the Annual Fund reached a milestone, it's 10th anniversary. In a spirit ofgratitude and recognition, we inaugurated the LaValla League for our friends whohad contributed to each of the first ten Annual Funds.

We chose the name "LaValla," for LaValla was the name of the town in southernFrance where the Marist Brothers began in 1817. "LaValla" embodies the sentimentsof allegiance and of beginnings.

Each year since then we have recognized new members to the LaValla League, in appreciation of their ten consecutive years of giving to the Marist Brothers Annual Fund appeal.

In gratitude for their kindness and generosity, each new member has received a commemorative pewter medallion of St. Marcellin Champagnat encased in lucite.

This year we are proud to announce the addition of the following 66 new members, swelling the ranks of the LaValla League to 602 members. Congratulations!

The Marist Brothers are unique in a number ofways. One way is in the programs it offersBrothers at different stages in their life. Onesuch program offered is a once in a lifetimerenewal program for English-speaking Brothers65 years of age or older. It is called the LeTroisième Âge or the Third Age Program. The program lasts two months, addresses life’stransitions and is housed in the medieval town of Manziana, one hour’s train ride northwest of

Rome, Italy. The programallows for time to pause–tocatch up with yourself; to seewhere you’ve been, where youare and where you want to be.It is staffed by Marists andinvited guest speakers, theolo-gians and lecturers.

I wanted to go. I had justturned 70 and was looking forexactly what the programoffered. Br. John, Provincial,extended an invitation to theFall 2006 program and I jumped at it.

Twenty one Brothers from seven countriesaround the world made up our group of jubilari-ans that spontaneously knit together during thosetwo months of October and November, 2006.

The program revolved arounddays of theological updates,gerontological health issues,telling and reflecting on one’slife story, liturgical worship,communal and private prayer.Neighboring medieval townswith names like Viterbo andBracciano, Assisi, Deruta andSubiaco were all targets of ourweekly afternoon adventures.And the sights and basilicas ofRome were just an hour’s trainride away.

I was gripped by each Brother’slife story, what brought him to

religious life, his high and low points in commu-nity and ministry, the family and neighborhoodhe came from. They say that every monk bringshis mother into the monastery with him when heenters. Now I believe it.

I didn’t expect this but, to a man, each talkedexcitedly of new ministerial plans and patterns

upon returning home, not of retirement. TheseMarists from around the world still viewed them-selves as the ministers they had always been, butslower.

I also found these men to be mature in theirprayer. Each had found his own way of pray-ing–an achievement admired by spiritual writers. They were a restful group to pray with.

We left Italy and visited the holy places of Maristlore in France where St. Marcellin Champagnatwas born and lived, where he worked, the surroundings he loved. We followed the foot-prints he left in the dirt paths between theHermitage and LaValla. We paused and prayed at places where St. Marcellin was inspired andwhere the Marist Brothers were birthed. We felthis strength and determination in the pickaxe-scored shale and stones of the Hermitage that he and the early Brothers built, together.

I get flashbacks of the Third Age experience atodd moments in the day, lasting only seconds.The days, the places, the faces. And when I do, Ipause and briefly thank God… for this time, thatspace, and those companions on the journey.

Through their com-bined efforts, almost $40,000 was raised tohelp Marist missions in various countriesthroughout the world.

A special “Thank You” to BBrr.. JJaammeessMMccKKnniigghhtt for his dedication and timespent coordinating our Mission efforts with the dioceses and parishes across the country.

We would also like to thank the students ofMMaarriisstt HHiigghh SScchhooooll,, CChhiiccaaggoo,, IIlllliinnooiiss fortheir generous gift of $1,000 for the specialmission works of Br. Sean Sammon,Superior General of the Marist Brothers.

……TToo our volunteers. The Marist BrothersDevelopment Office is blessed with twofaithful volunteers. BBrr.. OOsswwaalldd OOuueelllleetttteevolunteers each day helping with our mail-ings and shredding of documents. At 92years young, Br. Oz exemplifies the Maristspirit of “doing good quietly.”

Our other volunteer, MMrrss.. MMaarryy JJooGGuuyyeettttee, brings an infectious, bubbly spirit to our office each week when shecomes to help out. Mary Jo pitches inwherever she is needed from helpingprocess mail to writing prayer cards to run-ning credit card donations. Our office certainly wouldn’t run as smoothlywithout her!

On behalf of all the Marist Brothers of the Province of the United States, I want to thank youfor your extraordinary generosity and support of our mission to young people throughout thecountry. The Marist Brothers and our lay associates serve in fourteen high schools, one residential summer camp, and a large retreat center in a network of Marist apostolates thatstretches from central New Hampshire to the southernmost tip of the United States inBrownsville, Texas. Your financial generosity and, most especially, your prayers make a significant difference in the life and work of each Marist Brother in our Province. As a result, you have become an integral part of our mission and our Marist family.

During the course of the past year your support has enabled us to upgrade and significantlyimprove the quality of life of our senior Brothers living at Champagnat Hall on the property ofMount St. Michael Academy in the Bronx, New York. Dramatic improvement to the physicalplant combined with increased health care services has enriched the lives of these men whohave given so much to countless thousands of young people and their families. Without you we could never have accomplished this.

While we are committed to providing the best care possible for our senior men, we are well-aware that the continuance of our mission depends upon our ability to encourage youngmen to consider and join our religious family. Consequently, relying heavily upon your financial assistance, the Province has launched a vigorous and innovative marketing campaignwith the professional expertise of the Erbach Communications Group. This campaign is unique in its tone and message and in the use of online marketing venues to reach teen andtwenty-something young men.

Unlike traditional religious marketing, our “Real Brothers…Real Stories…a Real Difference”campaign doesn’t use “religious speak” and doesn’t present the Brothers as distant and formal.Instead, its tone is honest, direct and down to earth. Its stories feature Brothers as regular menwith real doubts, at times; however, in their stories their commitment to and fulfillment fromMarist life is always a clear and solid message. I want to encourage you to view our new MaristDVD, to read our stories, to keep up-to-date about what is happening in the Province, and toaccess our monthly spirituality guide by checking out our website at www.maristbr.com.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, 162 students from Marist schools in the U.S.,Mexico and Canada gathered at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York for MaristYouth 2007. The weekend focused on further understanding of what it means to be"Marist" and how to incorporate the values of St. Marcellin Champagnat in their lives and in their school community.
