Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2013

From the HeadmasterDear Members of the Marist College Ashgrove family,

On the Sunday of the recent Boarder free weekend, my wife and I attended Mass at Sacred Heart Church Rosalie. Fr Peter had written a great editorial in the Parish Bulletin. The theme was forgiveness. It’s a great theme for Lent. As this is the last Newsletter for the term, and for Lent, it is an appropriate time to focus on Jesus dying so that all our sins would be forgiven. Sometimes we lose sight of the “disgraceful injustice and unspeakable torture and humiliation” that Jesus submitted to. He chose this journey for all of us. My thanks to Father Peter Brannelly, for his permission to publish his words to all of you. I pray that we all focus on Jesus Passion in the last week of Lent ahead.

Yours in Jesus, Mary and St MarcellinPeter McLoughlinHeadmaster

AND THE WINNER IS... This weekend in Los Angeles is the movie industry’s “night of nights”, The Oscars. One of the contenders for the top prize is the movie adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic tale, Les Miserables. It is a story of grace and redemption, of compassion and mercy. Sure it is a long movie but that is understandable when you see the size of the book! The story begins with a simple but profound moment of forgiveness. Jean Valjean, the central figure, has been imprisoned for stealing a small loaf of bread to feed his sister’s daughter. Released from prison after 20 years of hard labour and brutal treatment, Jean Valjean is a broken, bitter man. He is desperate for work but no one wants to hire someone just released from prison.

Cold and hungry, he is taken in by a kindly bishop. During the night Valjean steals the bishop’s silver plate and flees but he does not get very far and is arrested by the local police. The police bring Valjean to the bishop and ask him to identify the thief and his silver plate.

The bishop quickly identifies his silver plate but then goes on to explain to the police that he gave Valjean the silver. The bishop thanks the police for bringing him back because he was concerned that Valjean had left and forgotten to also take the valuable candlesticks as well.

Valjean is utterly stunned by the bishop’s extraordinary kindness and forgiveness. The bishop only asks Valjean to use the silver to recreate his life and return God’s goodness to others. God has raised you out of darkness, the bishop tells Valjean. I have bought your soul for God.

It is a moment of transformation for Valjean who rediscovers within himself the love and mercy that led him to steal bread for his hungry niece. As the story unfolds we see him turning the bishop’s silver into a fortune that will benefit many and, as he does that, Valjean comes to realize that to love another person is to see the face of God.

On the second weekend of Lent we always hear one of the transfiguration accounts from the Gospel. This year we hear Luke’s account and we follow Peter and his sleepy companions as they struggle to understand what Jesus’ transfiguration could possibly mean. It was one moment of grace, one moment in time when Jesus was transfigured by his love for God and by God’s love for him.

As we also struggle to fully understand that story I just think that the kindness of the bishop gives us a glimpse of what transfiguration could mean for us. Somehow it is about our love of God and God’s love for us! Through the bishop’s extraordinary forgiveness, Jean Valjean experiences a moment of grace, a moment of transfiguration when he realizes that the ember of God’s goodness continues to burn within him despite two decades of imprisonment.

That same ember, that moment of grace exists within each one of us, as well. It is the spark that animates us to do good and holy things. It is that moment when we decide to act with compassion and walk humbly in the ways of God. It’s that flash of inspiration that transforms our actions. It’s the ember, deep within us, that ultimately knows that God has raised us up, out of darkness.

These are moments of transfiguration. They might happen on top of a mountain but odds on, they take place during the course of living our everyday life. Perhaps that is where Jean Valjean ultimately became aware that to love another person is to see the face of God. - Fr Peter Brannelly

Headmaster’s Notes

MARIST BASkETBALL CARNIvALOur sincere best wishes to our boys who will travel to Alice Springs over the Easter break to compete in the Australian Marist Basketball Carnival. Daniel Atcheson (12H), Callum Atterton (11E), Zac Fisher (10E), Michael Fowler (11E), Chris Meland (12S), Tom Richards (12H), Aidan Svencis (12I), Patrick Toze (12S), Joe Treston (12I), Sam Walker (11F) and Mr Peter Atcheson (Coach) and Mr Josh Mulligan (Manager).

RUGBY / FOOTBALLBest wishes also to our 1st and 2nd XV rugby teams who will tour Sydney during the holidays and to our 1st XI football team who will tour Canberra. My thanks to the staff who make these tours possible: Rugby: Mr Fitzgerald, Mr Dash, Mr McIntosh, Mr Rynders; Football: Mr Poole, Mr Faust, Mr Mazzoleni.

STAFF FAREWELLSOur thanks and best wishes to the following staff who will go on leave after Term 1:

• Mrs Betty-Anne Briggs who will commence parental leave next term. We wish Betty-Anne every joy and happiness for the birth of her baby.

• Mr Michael Connolly who will be on Long Service Leave for Term 2.• Mr Greg Seaborn who completes the term teaching Mr Kearney’s classes.

HARMONY DAYMany thanks to all staff and boys who committed to this wonderful assembly on 14 March. It was a great expression of our cultural diversity and acceptance at Marist College Ashgrove.

RATS IN A CAGECongratulations to Ms Elizabeth Falconer and the Year 12 Drama students for their extraordinary performance in Rats in a Cage, a new play by Markwell Presents Cinematic Theatre Company, held in the Draney Theatre on 12 and 13 March. The play was set in a detention classroom and the performances were such that it was easy to forget that you were watching a play.

Dear PeterI would appreciate if you could once again pass on our family’s great appreciation for the support given to us from the Marist community since Liam’s cancer diagnosis mid last year. How ironic that the final months of my connection to this wonderful school which dates back to 1972 when my oldest brother began boarding and carries through four brothers, numerous cousins and nephews and four sons would be played out like this.

We have been humbled by the moral, spiritual and financial support we have been flooded with since those first awful early days. Without the constant reminders of the spirit of generosity within the Marist family, be it through home cooked meals, money or a word at the shops or Moola Road, we would have had a much tougher time of these last months.

Thanks also for the continued prayers offered for Liam. They have been a great comfort to him, and to us.

Thank you also to the teachers and staff who have contributed to Liam’s progress through his illness. The boarding staff have been fantastic. I would encourage Marist parents to take note of the major reason our boys turn into such fine young men; great role models in the form of such a committed and dedicated body of staff. Never underestimate how important the impact of such fine people has on our boys as they mature. Viriliter age indeed.

We would like to particularly thank the class of ‘81 and their families, who have gone above and beyond with a generosity of spirit that is a source of great wonder to us. Their compassion and selflessness has helped to lighten up some pretty dark days for us.

Many people admit to being unable to comprehend the enormity of going through any type of similar experience. We pray that anyone who is forced into our position has access to a support group like that of the Marist Ashgrove family. Our heartfelt thanks go out to the school community.

Thank you Peter for your help in this matter,

Kind regardsJames Lisa Mark Tom Brendan and Liam plus the extended Kennedy family.

From the Deputy HeadmasterCHANGES TO TRAFFIC – TERM 2

From the start of Term 2 there will be a new boom gate placed at the north-east corner of the pool (see arrow) which before 9am and between 2.30 and 4pm will restrict access past that point for most people.

There will be a continuing expectation that no cars drive across the Glenlyon Bridge unless it is absolutely essential. Those that do, will be required to turn left into the staff car park and loop around back to the bridge. There will be no provision at all for cars wishing to get any closer to the Draney Theatre or Music Centre.

This decision has been taken after consideration by the Workplace Health and Safety Committee and ratified by the Leadership team in the interests of the safety of students and staff. It has always been our intention to have as much of the College campus as possible designated a pedestrian precinct.

We also recommend that parents drop students at the western end of the flats (Des Connor Park), by driving along Grevillea Road and turning right into Acacia Drive rather than coming directly down Glenlyon Drive. If we could develop a custom of one way traffic along Acacia Drive, this would alleviate much of the congestion at the bridge entrance.

There is also a drop off zone available when entering through Moola Road.

Model integrity. Accept feedback humbly from your spouse, children, parents and work colleagues, and make resolutions to fix whatever needs fixing. Let children see your own efforts to improve.

A seven year old should already know the difference between reality and fabrication. To teach honesty and openness to a seven-year-old child you may need to remind your child that you were seven once, so you know a story when you hear one. Make eye contact – it makes it more difficult for a child to lie.

Don’t punish for telling the truth about a wrongdoing; give praise for having the courage to tell the truth, to give the child a way out. To help your child never be afraid of telling the truth because of the punishment, ask ‘What do you think is a fair punishment?’ if they are caught out. Teach the importance of deep contrition for mistakes, as we can only correct mistakes we have acknowledged in our hearts. Let them buy in, to be part of the solution.

Correct each small act of insincerity. Habits of dishonesty can be alarmingly ingrained; long patterns of stealing, deception and baldfaced lies can come out far too late. Opportunities to correct dishonesty must be taken when they arise. Agree on concrete consequences for future slipups. And then firmly, but with infinite affection, hold your child to the deal.

When a child is insincere, try to understand why. Is it a problem of your example, or a fear of your temper, or a problem of peer or older sibling example, or a naïveté on your part so that simple lies have become habitual? As a couple, explore the causes so you can fix the problem.

Allow natural consequences to take their course – a lie to a teacher should be fixed by honesty and an apology, shoplifting requires restitution and face-to-face apology, etc. Explain your reasons for insisting on consequences.

Teach that insincerity harms others and breaks relationships. Teach that apologies repair relationships. Teach that forgiveness following apologies is Christian and also a vital necessity. Pride that stops forgiveness is just as great an obstacle to relationships.

Don’t punish while you are emotional. Publilius Syrus in the first century BC taught, ‘In a heated argument we are apt to lose sight of the truth’. If you have become angry, apologise, or take time out, and then listen to your child’s view.

Teach your child to assess motives, by reflecting on the causes and consequences of his or her actions. Particularly focus on the consequences that are repercussions on others. Charity is the biggest lesson. Respect for others in all things; this is the bottom line.

No. 104 March 2013

Sincerity is a must. Strategies to foster honesty in children.

Sincerity is essential if we are to be able to face and address situations, the truth about ourselves and about others, and if we are to be able to face objectively the impact of our actions on others, if we are to be direct and transparent in relationships and face up to the duties permanent relationships place on us. Reverence for sincerity crosses all cultural boundaries. Confucius said ‘Sincerity and truth are the basis of every virtue.’ Cicero wrote, ‘Nature has instilled in our minds an insatiable desire to see truth.’ He advised simply ‘Do not pretend one thing and do another.’ The Talmud, a Jewish text from early centuries after Christ, too: ‘If you add to the truth, you subtract from it.’ The word ‘sincerity’ comes from the Latin sine, meaning ‘without’, and cera meaning ‘wax’. There are two theories for this: one suggests that sculptors liked blocks of marble which were flawless, without imperfections plugged with wax. Another theory holds that trustworthy messengers were sent with messages unsealed, and therefore without wax. In both stories, the virtue of honesty is demonstrated. Sincerity is best established as a habit in a young person. It is not normal for children, by the time they are seven or so, to be insincere. If children do not tell the truth it is important to work out the causes: whether it is because of fear of consequences, poor example from peers, ingrained habits, wanting to look good, perhaps even parent example. Whatever the cause, it needs to be addressed.

Practical approaches to teaching sincerity.

Parents teach a love for truth when they themselves embrace reality without fear. Why are we so scared of the truth? Why is it so hard for us to admit we are wrong? Why do we find apologies so difficult? Someone once said, ‘We should keep so close to facts that we never have to remember the second time what we said the first time!’ We adults must never bend the truth. Children have a well-developed hypocrisy aerial.

Mission and Ministry NEWS FROM THE HEAD OF MISSION

Mr Luke McMahon

Lenten Collection 2013

The College continues to collect money for our 2013 Lenten collection, and with only one week to go we are asking boys and families to dig deep in an attempt to reach our target of $30, 0000. Any families who would like to contribute in addition to donations, by their sons please contact the Mission and Ministry team on 3858 4582.

Funds raised go to Marist Asia Pacific Solidarity (MAPS), with some funds going to CARITAS and Catholic Mission. MAPS is often able to match dollar for dollar, sometimes more than that so funds we raise can be doubled or better. Any encouragement and assistance families can give boys in committing to the Lenten collection would be appreciated. Funds are raised in House events, class collections, special food drives, raffles and donations.

Only $20 per boy would see us raise more than $30,000!!

Welcome Pope Francis

Marist College Ashgrove joins with the Marist world and the universal Church in welcoming to the Papacy, Francis I. Commentators are seeing in the Pope’s choice of name, Francis, after the “alter Christus”, Francis of Assisi, powerful symbolism. The man from Assisi was inspired to change the world and the Church from the grassroots, not from some elevated position in the hierarchy. It seems that our new Pope, already eschewing the trappings normally associated with his new role, is making a strong statement of intent and example. Long may he continue. Our Marist Superior-General, Br Emili Turu, in his “welcome Brother Francis” sees the election of a Jesuit priest who then takes the name of the founder of another religious order as an extraordinary validation of religious life. And that the choice of “Francis”, the Patron Saint of Italy, sends a clear message about the model of Church and religious life the new Pope is focussed upon – living the gospel without ostentation, commitment to the poor, simplicity, humility, mission without borders, evangelising people where they are at, a passion for Jesus Christ and for one another.

We ask God to bless our new Pope Francis with the grace to lead the Church with wisdom, and the Holy Spirit to enlighten him in his mission as Shepherd of the People of God. Amen.

Pope Francis (Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio)

NEWS FROM THE COLLEGE CHAPLAIN Fr Pius Jones

There has been a great deal of media coverage on the rerement of Pope Benedict and the elecon of our new Holy Father, Pope Francis. Speculators wondered at the rerement of Pope Benedict and the personality of Pope Francis. Many quesons have been asked about the future direcons Pope Francis will take.

In all of this there tends to be one aspect that is overlooked. The primary queson should be: Do we have a holy man? We call the Pope ‘Holy Father.’ If he is to be a genuine spiritual ‘papa’ then his story ought be one of deep relaonship with God and fellow human beings. It seems evident in these very early days of his papacy that he is indeed one who can offer guidance on our own spiritual journey.

The church is now blessed, in a rather unusual way, by having two Popes: Pope Emeritus Benedict and Pope Francis. Pope Benedict will intensify his prayer for the Church and Pope Francis will pray and lead the Church in prayer.

On another note, and a more important one: our Lenten journey is almost over and soon we will enter into Holy Week, a week of spiritual drama of which we are not merely spectators, but acve parcipants. Our Lenten journey has prepared us to enter into this dramac celebraon of the Paschal Mystery: the passion, suffering, death and resurrecon of Jesus. It is a me when we can unite our own human experiences which has touched most lives, of suffering, whether physical, spiritual or of the heart, with the sufferings of Jesus. As we remember his entry into the tomb, we go into the places of our own sadness and hurt, and sit there with him.  As we sit there we know that we must face the shadows, the failures, the disappointments, the broken dreams, the things that only God can mend.

At the Easter vigil, we strike a ame in the darkness, and that ame spreads from the Paschal Candle, a light in the darkness, a beacon of hope, a reminder to us that God raised his Son Jesus, the Christ, from the dead. That single ame becomes our hope. The sign that we too can rise above the shadows, can be forgiven, can forgive, can heal and above all, can hope.

Pope Emeritus Benedict sums all this up:

“Only when someone values love more highly than life, that is, only where someone is ready to put life second to love, for the sake of love, can love be stronger and more than death. If it is to be more than death it must rst be more than mere life. Jesus’ total love for others, which leads him to the cross, is perfected in total stepping‐over to the Father and therein becomes stronger than death, because in this it is at the same me total ‘being held’ by him.”

We journey together towards Easter. May our spiritual journey be one of joy and hope. A very blessed Easter to all.

Fr Pius Jones , SM

Our MATES rosters are filling up and our programs have now all commenced. We took four Year 8 volunteers to Paddington Day Respite Centre on Tuesday and we look forward to many more visits here. We have continued our commitments to Little King’s Movement and St Peter Chanel on Wednesdays and St Finbarr’s on Thursday. It is great to see lots of new faces volunteering for these social justice initiatives.

At this week’s College assembly we celebrated Harmony Day and in a special presentation, awarded MATES Platinum Awards to Year 12 students Ben Perkins, Sam Kiernan, Jerome Pang and Conan Russell. These boys have each attained over 150 MATES hours through various MATES, SVDP and Immersion commitments. We as a community are so very grateful for their outstanding commitment to our social justice programs here at Marist. Congratulations Boys!

Our work with the homeless continues but we are in need OF MORE OLD BOYS to be involved with Tuesday night’s Marcellin’s Tucka Van at New Farm Park. This initiative was begun by Br Mark primarily for Old Boys to remain connected to Marist and MATES. Families are also welcome to volunteer for Wednesday night’s BBQ. Please contact Liz Spry in the Mission Office for more information at [email protected]

Immersion interviews have begun for our 70 Year 11 applicants. This is a record number of applications for 35 places. Letters will be sent home at the end of Term 1 to all applicants informing them if they have been successful or not. As you could imagine, this is a very challenging and somewhat difficult process. Your patience and prayers are gratefully accepted.

Reflection

Lord, may all that we do this day, from morning until night,

begin with your inspiration, and continue with your powerful help.

May our work this day be steeped in love and mercy,

that we might love you, and love our neighbors,

as perfectly as you love us. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen

Blessings for this week 25 March Annunciation of the Lord

May it be done to me according to your word.” Amen

DEAR PARENTS,

As part of the school’s ongoing commitment to support families, we are pleased to announce that Powerhouse Programs will again be delivering three types of events of interest to Marist parents in 2013.

• “Raising Teenage Boys” Parent Evening on Thursday, 18th April.• Building Bridges - Term 2 (Monday nights 29th April – 3rd June).• Journey to Manhood - Easter Holidays (Tuesday, 9th Apr - Saturday, 13th Apr).• Journey to Manhood - September Holidays (Tuesday, 1st Oct - Saturday, 5th Oct).

The purpose of these programs is to support families to make the best of these often-challenging teenage years. To date, over 20 Marist families have participated in these programs.

The first of these is their ‘Raising Teenage Boys – Because Growing Up is Optional’ Parent Information Evening. This 2-hour presentation is being held in the Cyprian Pavilion on Thursday, 18 April with arrival from 6:45pm for start at 7pm. The target audience is for Parents-only with sons aged 12-16 years in 2013 and is FREE to attend, as the College is covering the cost.

Powerhouse Programs co-founder, Father of 6 and author, Andy Roy will present;

• Understanding the Mystery of the Teenage Brain• The 7 keys to Effective Teen Parenting• PLUS the must-have WILDCARD for all frustrated parents.• A brief overview of the Family Programs scheduled in 2013 and an opportunity to hear from Parents that have

attended.

Building Bridges is a skill-based, fun and rewarding experience for a small group of men and boys. Many boys have attended with men other than their fathers - uncles, grandfathers and family friends are welcome and very much add to the experience. Dads realise just how important it is to look at their own change and how much their son’s growth into a healthy man depends on their ongoing development as a father and man. This program supports Dad’s getting clear on what’s important for themselves and their sons… and how to avoid the familiar traps.

Men and boys attending this program universally give it the thumbs up; it is fun, skill-based and a rich & rewarding experience for all.

A magnificent journey and extremely positive experience. I could never have done this by myself, masterfully facilitated. ” (Victor, 46)

Finally, hear about a wonderful and healthy Rite of Passage for your teenage son. The Journey to Manhood program supports quality change in family relationships and celebrates the boys' transition AND the transition for everyone who cares about him. There are 2 opportunities this year to be involved in the 5-day, bush experience held April 9-13 and October 1-5 (both second weeks of holidays). Mother, Father and Son all share this once-in-a-lifetime experience that will PROPEL their relationships into new territory. More info available here - http://powerhouseprograms.com.au/programs/journey-to-manhood/

I feel that the Journey to Manhood Camp has provided a launching point for my son’s transition into Manhood. It’s provided a defining moment that allows us to reflect back and change our behaviour, to allow the YM to develop and grow. (Mother)

These programs are honouring of the Father-Son relationship with emphasis on the boys, supporting them with a variety of activities that opens up doors to the necessary conversations at this important time in their lives. It is an opportunity for all boys to be seen for who they are… and to be acknowledged for this. Boys leave feeling connected to their dad, other men and to the spirit within them, along with gaining greater respect & understanding for women. It gives them self-confidence, hope for the future and what being a man can be for them.

More testimonials from Participants:

This has been a terrific weekend and it has far exceeded my expectations. One of the great things about it was how we all learnt from the stories of the other men in the group. The chance to spend time with my son has been great, it’s brought our relationship closer and we’ve learnt things here that we’ll both carry forward, so thanks, it’s been terrific. (Gary, 49)

What can I say… it was one of the best experiences of my life. (Richard, 47)

It was very worthwhile and I had a great experience… (Thomas, 15)

It’s about building connections, connections with my dad and with others. It’s a place to really be yourself, it’s really worthwhile. (Fletcher, 16)

From the Head of Teaching & LearningAs we near the end of the term and assessment is due, it is important to revisit College expectations with regards to due dates. All assignment tasks regardless of year level are due in on the due date. Students who are ill on the due date should make every effort to ensure their assessment is either emailed to the correct teacher or alternatively brought in to the Studies Office or Main Administration by a parent, sibling or other. If the illness has been more long term and has affected the completion of the task, the following must take place as per the College Assessment Policy:

ASSIGNMENTS

Year 8 – 10 : The parent contacts the Teacher and Head of House as soon as it becomes apparent that the task will be late. An alternative date will then be arranged. The task will be accompanied by a signed parent note.

Year 11- 12 : A medical certificate must be obtained which covers the period of time when the assessment was due as directed by the Queensland Studies Authority. This will be handed into the Studies Office and a copy will be forwarded to the Head of House and appropriate teachers. If necessary, special consideration may also be applied for at this time. Without a medical certificate or other official documentation, the student must still complete the assessment piece but no grade can be recorded for the piece and the student will be at risk of not having completed the minimum requirements to receive credit for that semester in the effected subject.

ExAMS

Years 8 – 10 : Students must notify their teacher that they will be absent for an exam and make alternative arrangements once they are back at school. A medical certificate or parent note needs to be given to the student’s tutor and subject teacher.

Years 11 – 12 : A medical certificate must be obtained covering the date of the exam and handed into the Studies Office as soon as the students returns to school. Alternative arrangements need to be made as soon possible to complete the assessment.

SPECIAL PROvISION FOR THE QCS TEST

Students wishing to apply for a variation to test conditions for the QCS test will need to make an appointment to see me as soon as possible. If you are unsure about whether your son qualifies, you can find more information from the site below. There is also a brochure you can access and contact information if you would prefer to discuss the possibility that your son may qualify directly with the Queensland Studies Authority. Special provision must be applied for through the College but the decision about suitability will be made by the QSA.

Site: http://www.qsa.qld.edu.au/downloads/senior/qcs_sp_handbook_12.pdf

SENIOR SUBJECT CHANGES

Senior students may only request a change of subject at two points in their senior academic career: 1. The end of Semester 1 or the beginning of Semester 2 in Year 11

or

2. At the end of Year 11 or beginning of Year 12.

Students may not change subjects during a semester or at the end of Semester 1/beginning of Semester 2 in Year 12. Changing subjects should be kept to an absolute minimum as missing the formative work which takes place in Year 11 can make a successful change very difficult.

Students who wish to change pathways are exempt from this policy. They may change from OP to Non OP at any time during Semester 1 in Year 11 and are encouraged to change as quickly as possible as many certificates require the best part of two years to complete.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to wish all students well in their exams and other assessment. It is the culmination of all of your hard work and study. Remember to start your study and preparation early, take regular breaks and in the end, reward yourself for all of your hard effort.

DISCONTINUED BUS SERvICE

As you know most of our boys travel by bus home. The Bus No 373 which is present at the school takes the boys to Enoggera. From there, they have to catch another bus to their homes. The boys travelling towards the city and who stop at Newmarket, Kelvin Grove and the City use the Bus No 372, which is direct to Newmarket and towards the city. Translink wants to discontinue this service. Customers can put in their survey if they want to comment. Is it possible for the school to fight the case for the 372 to continue and to continue till 5:00pm as the students cannot participate in after-school sports as there will be no bus service when the 372 discontinues.? Or is it possible for the 373 to continue operating till 5 pm and before hours from 7:00am as well to include sports participation. If it can stop at Enoggera and to continue towards the city so the boys at Newmarket, Kelvin Grove and the city have bus services. I have pasted the link which parents can fill in which can support our argument. http://translink.com.au/about-translink/reporting-and-publications/media-releases/release/638 kIND REGARDS, A CONCERNED PARENT

As Head of Information Communication Technology (ICT) at Marist, my role is to assist in the implementation of the 1:1 program. This will involve supporting the integration of ICTs into teaching and learning practices as well as providing information and assistance to parents and students. Please remember to also visit the Parents section of the School Portal found via MYMARASH for information.

YEAR 8 REMINDER – DEvICE PURCHASEA quick reminder that all Year 8 students are to have a device (own, HP laptop or Apple) for the start of Term 2 2013. For more information on the minimum requirements or order forms, please visit the Parent Lounge accessible via MYMARASH on the school website.

YEAR 9 AND 10 REMINDER – LAPTOP BAGSCan I please ask parents to remind your son to always carry their laptop in the appropriate laptop bag. There have been a few incidents of dropped laptops resulting in damage which could have been avoided had the laptop been carried in an appropriate bag. A timely reminder also to check that the laptop is insured for accidental damage and/or loss either though a specialist package or household insurance. Details of the insurance included in the HP and Apple devices when purchased through the School can be found on the Marist web site.

USE OF THE LAPTOPS AT THE COLLEGEIt is a requirement of the College that all students in Years 9 and 10 (including Year 8 in Term 2):

1. bring their laptop every day2. bring their laptop to School fully charged3. use MokaFive to access the school Intranet and the Internet. Using a local login (laptop specific login) while at school is not permitted. In

addition, circumventing the school Gateway to access the internet unfiltered by tethering (creating a hotspot, bluetooth connection etc) to their or another student’s smart phone or by the use of a USB wireless adaptor/router is also not permitted.

Students who repeatedly do not comply with these requirements will be dealt with by their Head of House and consequences will be imposed. Additionally, students who do not bring their laptop to school will be marked ‘Present – No Laptop’ during roll call. Similarly, students do not have a fully charged laptop will be marked ‘Present – Flat Battery’.

FREE vERSION OF MICROSOFT OFFICE All students in Year 8-10 are able to download a free copy of Microsoft Office for Windows and Mac. A letter was sent to all parents which outlines the process. These details are also on the Parent section of the School Portal.

WINDOWS 8 Please note the following by John Lee (IT Co-ordinator):

“We have discovered that students who download a free copy of Windows 8 from the Microsoft website and install on the HP laptops causes an intermittent connection issue with their laptop and the network. That is it may work for a while then stop.

Our advice is not to install Windows 8 just yet until we find out from HP that software works correctly with it. If you have done this already and find that it causes problems you will have to roll back to Windows 7. You may have to contact the IT Help Desk if you are having trouble with rolling back to Windows7.

Please note this may also be an issue with other brands as well so be sure that you check with on the manufacturer’s website that you can do it.”

TURNITINAs part of the College Assessment Policy, all written assignments are to be submitted through Turnitin. Turnitin is an online tool used by students and teachers of the School to check that work submitted for assessment purposes does not include improper citation or potential plagiarism. Teachers at the College have been provided with Professional Development opportunities in the use of Turnitin and Students in Years 8 to 12 have been sent a ‘Quick Guide’ to enrolling and submitting papers to Turnitin.

ICT PROFESSIONAL DEvELOPMENT On Monday 25th February the teachers were engaged in a half day Professional Development (PD) for teaching and learning with ICTs. The themes on this day were ICT Tools for Collaboration and Creativity; Tailoring Assessment for Learning (with a focus on ICT tools for assessment); Using ICT to Develop Reflective Learners; and, Managing ICTs in the Classroom.

Underpinning the PD opportunities is the research from John Hattie: Visible Learning and the 21C Learning Design from ITL Research. Hattie synthesised over 800 meta-analyses relating to the influences on achievement in school-aged students which clearly identifies that ‘what teachers do in the classroom matters’ and using ICTs as a tool to support great pedagogy is a strong focus for the College. In addition, the integration of ICTs in teaching and learning benefits the development of the 21C skills identified in the 21C Learning Design Program by ITL Research. These include collaboration, knowledge construction, self-regulation, problem solving and innovation, using ICT for learning and skills communication. As a result of the PD many teachers are continuing their investigation into the use of Web 2.0 tools (online tools) to enhance teaching and learning through the integration of ICTs. Ask your son if they have used Poll Everywhere, Class Dojo, Prezi, socrative or Todays Meet in class – you’ll be surprised at the potential that these tools present to assist your child in their learning.

Finally, many thanks to Alana Armitage (Head of Professional Learning), the organiser of the very successful and inspiring series of Professional Development opportunities for staff at the College.

Regards,Ms Denise ShuttlewoodHead of ICTe: [email protected]: 0439 752 690

This has been a very busy term!

The Experience of a Lifetime by Fergus Geary Grade 11

I made my way down the driveway before looking back at the empty schoolyard from which I was eager to escape. I was alone, cold and felt nervous as my suitcase wheels bounced across the cobblestones announcing my presence to the unfamiliar surrounds. My phone ticked over to the designated pick up time of 4:00 pm. I was right on time and suddenly filled with a sense of anticipation as I waited for the theme of my many daydreams to unfold, especially the part involving the older sister who would be fascinated by my accent and intoxicated by my new duty free cologne. Instead my French student counterpart, an only child, introduced me to his middle aged parents. In case you haven’t guessed already, I’m writing about the 2012/2013 French exchange that took place over the Christmas holidays. I wanted to start with this story because despite the absence of a beautiful sister I was excited to meet my host family and this was one of many experiences whereby the things that I imagined from the comfort of my home in Ashgrove would contrast sharply with what actually happened during the trip.

Our experience began with thirty hours on a plane, half as many in flight movies and the novelty of airline food. As a group of eleven Marist boys we arrived in Paris which was our home for the first five days and where we first got to practise our French. We visited famous sites including the Eiffel Tower, the Arc De Triomphe, the Louvre, the Champs-Elysées and Notre Dame. I felt very privileged staying in iconic Paris, sleeping in a hotel and eating out for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Next on the itinerary was Amiens, a small city in the north of France with a World War One history involving many Australians. We spent a moving three days in Amiens touring the battlefields and war memorials along the western front.

We soon left Amiens for Tours, a city in the centre of France where we would be spending three weeks with our respective host families. For myself and three other Ashgrove boys this meant five days in a French boarding school because the boys we were billeted with were boarders. The boarding school food was terrible, I missed the hotel in Paris and the guy next to me talked in his sleep. I plotted the Australian Embassy on Google Maps and was planning my escape when, just in time, we broke up for Christmas holidays.

I then spent two weeks with my host family and could feel my French improving each night at the dinner table following long days of local adventure and socializing. In the second week my French family took me to the town of Harnes which was in the far north of France from where my host mother came. We spent Christmas there with the extended family.

After bidding goodbye to my host family I was reunited with the Marist boys. We then embarked on a six-hour train ride to Lyon where we would be spending two nights in The Hermitage, the birthplace of the Marist Brothers. We spent three days doing a pilgrimage of significant places in the history of the Marist Brothers and St. Marcellin. But our time in Lyon was short lived and at 4:00 in the morning we woke up to leave for the skiing village of Chamonix for our final three days of the trip, which was definitely a highlight for all.

Overall the 2012/2013 French Trip was undoubtedly the experience of a lifetime. Throughout the whole trip there was always the excitement and sometimes angst of what next? But of course this incredible experience was made possible by Ms. Bonell and Ms. Spillane who organized and accompanied us on the trip. To any boy studying French, be sure to sign up for next year’s exchange, for not only learning the language, but for the camaraderie and new friendships that are formed.

A TASTE OF FRENCH

On Friday 22 February Year 12 French students were invited to ‘Á Taste of French’ at the University of Queensland. University lecturers provided workshops to give students an idea of what it is like to study French at the University. Learning language through popular song or deciding what to give a hamster for his birthday taught language in a surprisingly sophisticated and interesting way. Since the event was held after school, a goûter of pains au chocolat was really appreciated.

YEAR 11&12 MLTAQ FRENCH DINNER

A very huge thank you to Mr Gary Keown and the hospitality students who catered for 100 students and their teachers from 6 different schools in Brisbane who came to Marcellin’s Restaurant to celebrate and enjoy a wonderful French inspired dinner. Mouth-watering dishes were cooked for us, including truite fumée et crevettes au brie en croûte, tournedos de boeuf, pommes de terre William and tarte au chocolat aux framboises. A French quiz, French music and a contest to find the best group to sing the Marseillaise resulted in a very successful evening.

RETURN vISIT OF FRENCH STUDENTS FROM MARMOUTIER

On 7 February the French students arrived from Marmoutier with their teachers and our host brothers spent just over 2 weeks with us at Marist College. They were welcomed, along with their teachers and the girls who are hosted by Stuartholme families, to an afternoon tea in the Cyprian Pavillion. Weekdays were spent at school but at the weekends they very much appreciated being shown the sights of Queensland and the South East. Surfing at the beach, ‘Wet & Wild’ and cuddling koalas were de rigueur. At school the French classes were very communicative. We enjoyed the conviviality, tried to speak as much French as possible and were very sad to see them leave. Having spent three weeks with each other in France already, there was a sense of togetherness in the group and very genuine friendships were formed. We are very lucky to share this partnership with our sister school in Tours.

Social Media Safety - For Parents

Develop an overall understanding of how social media is used by children. Understand what controls are available to help create safer accounts. Gain the knowledge to effectively communicate with children about protective

behaviours they can adopt.

It is commonly advised that adults caring for children should be actively participating in the children's use of social networking. Eyes Open Social Media has developed a range of workshops to help adults learn how to navigate the sites that children in their care are using. We provide practical advice and demonstrate how you find and use the settings to create a safer environment for children in your care.

Parent Information Night at Marist College Ashgrove The Eyes Open Social Media Information Session is free for parents to attend.

Content: Introduction to understand the basics about how social networking sites operate and the tools available to keep personal details protected. An overview of social media issues that children face and suggestions to reduce the chances of:

Junior School NewsDear Parents, Staff and Boys,

A momentous week for the world! Pope Francis. [I have been informed that it’s incorrect to name the Pope “Pope Francis I” as he is the first Pope to choose the name Francis and he will only be known as “Pope Francis I” if a Pope in the future chooses this name.]

I was going to write about Holy Week in this Newsletter, but decided to share a few reflections on Pope Francis, who has entered our lives this week. I am sure that not many of us had ever heard of him. I certainly hadn’t. But now he is part of our lives and a figure on the world stage, something I am sure he is not looking forward to.

Not knowing much about Pope Francis, I ‘googled’ and found some interesting facts, which I share with you:

• Jorge Bergoglio is the son of a railway worker and a housewife, who moved to Argentina from Italy. Jorge was born in Buenos Aires on 17 December 1936. He studied to be a chemist and had one lung removed, due to an infection, over 50 years ago.

• He speaks fluent Italian, Spanish and German.

• Jorge was Ordained in the Society of Jesus [Jesuit Order] in 1969 and was the Provincial Superior of the Jesuits in Argentina, from 1973 to 1979. He then became Bishop, Archbishop and Cardinal of Argentina.

• When he was made Archbishop of Buenos Aires, he didn’t move into the official residence, but into a small flat where he did his own cooking. He always travelled by public transport, especially the train or bus and there was a saying in Buenos Aires: “If you wish to see the Cardinal, catch a train or a bus!”

• As a priest and later Archbishop, he saw to it that every slum in Buenos Aires had a chapel and started many outreach programmes, supporting former prostitutes and drug addicts. He denounced politicians, capitalist excesses and corruption from the pulpit.

• Although conservative in Church doctrine, he has criticised priests who have refused to baptise babies born to single mothers. He kissed and washed the feet of Aids patients in a Hospice in 2001.

• By choosing the name ‘Francis’ the new Pope hints at what is important to him – reflecting a compassionate God, a God who takes care of the poor, a God of peace and a God who cares for everything that is upon the earth, including the environment. Pope Francis describes how he chose the name ‘Francis’: “The archbishop hugged me when I was chosen and said: ‘Don’t forget the poor.’ And those words came to me: The poor, the poor. Then right away, when thinking of the poor, I thought of Francis of Assisi. Then I thought of the wars as the votes were being counted, until the end. Francis is also a man of peace. That is how the name came into my heart: Francis of Assisi. For me Francis is a man of poverty, the man of peace, the man who loves and protects creation. These days we don’t have a very good relationship with creation, do we? He is a man who gives us the spirit of peace, the poor man.”

• During the last weeks of Lent and as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus – new life – let us pray for Pope Francis, that he may bring new life into the Church. STUDENT REPRESENTATIvE COUNCIL [SRC] NOMINATIONS AND ELECTIONS:

The process for electing the SRC for 2013 concludes on Friday 22 March, when the Year 7 boys and staff will vote for the SRC for 2013. The process takes a few weeks and I wish to thank each boy who came forward to nominate himself for one of the positions. This act, in itself, shows courage and generosity. I thank the staff who have been guiding the process – John Lambourne [Chair], Paul Knight and Mena McLean. For new parents, the following steps are followed:

(1) Year 7 Camp and Reflection on Leadership.

(2) Year 7 students are invited to write letters, nominating themselves for the positions of leadership. The class teachers read the letters and forward names to the Chair, John Lambourne.

(3) Some students are invited to an interview. This year the Panel was: John Lambourne, Paul Knight and Mena McLean.

(4) Selected students invited to address their Year 7 peers and teachers and voting takes place. Votes are counted by Mena McLean and John Lambourne.

(5) The SRC will be announced at the Junior School Assembly on Thursday 28 March, 2013.

CROSS-COUNTRY Cross-Country training officially commenced last week, with all runners now meeting in the Junior school courtyard at 7.00am. Just like the JRC, we encourage parents to run with the boys in the morning, so any parents keen to be involved please make yourself known to Bruce Weaver and Jim Crimmins, who are our Cross-Country coordinators. It is an expectation that all boys who wish to be considered for CIC selection attend at least two Cross-Country sessions per week in Term 1. Cross-Country training will continue every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the remainder of Term 1. Boys who don’t meet the expected number of training sessions will not be considered for CIC Cross-Country selection. Cross-Country training will continue at the beginning of Term 2 with training on Monday and Wednesday morning at 7.00am and time trials run on Friday afternoons after school. Cross-Country runners are welcome to have breakfast in the boarders’ dining room at 8.00am. Boys must be dressed fully in their school uniform for that day. This will allow for boys to attend Cross-Country training and then eat something substantial before heading to school. It is a continental breakfast at a cost of $3. Boys take the money along and pay there.

2013 SWIMMING As another season of CIC Swimming winds down, we take time to congratulate all of the boys who participated in the long 2013 season. The boys have completed hours of training, endured the mental and physical strain that comes with swimming competitively and delivered their best every step of the way.

The monster that is the 'Junior Swimming Team' grows every year. This year we had over 130 boys sign up for sessions, and most sessions hosted up to 60 junior swimmers in the pool. Not only did we have huge numbers of boys in the pool, but the quality of training that we have seen is reflected in the awesome times that the boys have been swimming all season. CIC day delivered one of the hardest competitions that I have ever seen, and the boys should be proud of the way that they swam. We had an overall individual PB rate of 75%, with several boys stripping almost one and a half seconds off their previous personal best times!

Overall, I am very proud of the boy’s efforts this season, and they deserve the results that they achieved. Let’s bring that same attitude back to the pool in Term 4 2013 and get ready to bring the heat in 2014! Let’s get after it and try to reclaim the title! Congratulations boys,

Andre Cois (Junior Swimming Head Coach)

CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to the following boys who have gained selection in the Metropolitan North swimming team and will subsequently compete at the State Championships held at Chandler from March 24-26:

Max Balmanno, Marcus Berehulak, Luke Brennan, Max Chandler, Isaac Crook, William Jackson, Henry Meland and Will Symington. Well done, boys, and all the best at the upcoming State Swimming Championships.

C.I.C RUGBY & FOOTBALL This Saturday will draw the curtain on our 2013 CIC Cricket season. Next week the boys will start the first of their Rugby and Soccer trials. The following dates and times are set aside for Rugby and Football Trials for all ages.

Term 1 2.00 – 3.00pm Monday March 25 2.00 – 3.00pm Tuesday March 262.00 – 3.00pm Wednesday March 27

Term 2 3.30 - 4.45pm Tuesday April 163.30 - 4.45pm Thursday April 18

Trial teams will be set for our Trial matches V NJC on Saturday April 20 at NJC, Indooroopilly. Training will resume as normal on the week starting April 22. All Rugby teams will train on Tuesday afternoon from 3.30-4.45pm and then one morning per week from 7.30-8.30am. All Football teams will train on Thursday afternoon from 3.30-4.45pm and then one morning per week from 7.30-8.30am.

Also if there are any parents who would be able to assist with the refereeing on the designated trial dates please contact [email protected] to indicate your availability. Any assistance in this area would be greatly appreciated.

For all trials and clinics it is important that the boys bring the following;

• Bumblebee jersey• Another jersey• Mouthguard• Football boots and socks• Waterbottle• Shin pads (Football)

As always the boys are looking forward to the Rugby and Football season with great anticipation. However, there are a few key points I would like to highlight to parents for the upcoming Rugby season.

These are:

• Wearing a mouth guard is compulsory under the CIC Rugby By-Laws; therefore students will not be allowed to take the field without one.

• Wearing of shin pads is compulsory under the CIC By-Laws; therefore students will not be allowed to take the Football field without wearing a pair.

• Each player must have their own water bottle for every training session and game.• Students must have full College Rugby or Football uniform when representing the College in CIC games; students must not

wear any Club Rugby uniform. Students will not be allowed to take the field unless they have full College uniform. • Students must arrive at least 30mins prior to the commencement of a match for an appropriate warm-up.

Please note:

• Trial squads DO NOT guarantee that a boy has made a certain team• Previous playing history, while useful in initial appointment to trial squads, will have no impact on selections for 2013. (i.e.

There are many Div 1 club players who do not make the A’s…and there are many boys who DO NOT play club who end up making A teams.)

• Ashgrove is a very big school with over 1400 boys playing Rugby and Football from Years 5 - 12. The trial process is a long and difficult one where coaches work very hard to get selections right while catering for the individual needs of boys. The support, patience and understanding by both parents and boys during this process is greatly appreciated.

All enquiries regarding Rugby and Football teams must be made with the respective Year level coordinators, these are -

The Clinic has been organised by ex-Reds loose-head prop and now Level 3 professional Coach, Dan McKellar, who, together with some of Queensland’s most highly regarded coaches, aims to deliver an informative and practical clinic aimed at developing high performing Rugby players.
