We’ve got a programme we’re very excited about here at the Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis.

It’s called R&D by the Sea.

R&D by the Sea is the Marine Theatre’s nurturing programme for new and developing work.

We all need space to think. Lyme Regis, set in the heart of England’s first natural UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounded by 95 miles of truly stunning coastline with rocks recording 185 million years of the Earth’s history, has just that.

It’s not often ideas come fully formed. We need time to delight, surprise, scare and confuse ourselves. To give ourselves fertile ground on which to develop. To invest in hours of research and then to forget all about it. This is where R&D by the Sea comes in.

R&D by the Sea gives artists use of the theatre and its facilities, normally for a 5-day period, to develop their work. We’ve invited writers, actors, theatre makers and practitioners of all kinds to come to Lyme Regis. Unfold, unlock and explore a vision, a feeling, a thought. Draw from our landscapes, history, communities and people.

And at the end of their week-long stay, we’ve invited these artists want to share what they’ve found.

This autumn we welcome four companies to Lyme Regis under the R&D by the Sea umbrella. We can’t tell you much about their shows, as they haven’t been made yet. All we ask is that you come along with a warm heart and an open mind. In return, we’ll promise to give you an exclusive behind the scenes glance at what goes on in a rehearsal room. You’ll get a chance to chat to the company afterwards and fill out a feedback form with your thoughts. We’d love to hear what you think.

Working in a building with a 121-year history can sometimes be a problem, and when that building is right next to the sea things can be even trickier. An extensive survey has revealed that in order to preserve the Marine, its two roofs are in desperate need of repair. The total cost of this work is estimated to be somewhere in the region of £95,000.

The building has survived for generations through the support of the community. With your help we want to guarantee the people of Lyme Regis a theatre at the heart of the Jurassic Coast for another 119 years.

We’ve got a great history of fantastic performance here in Lyme. Whether it’s one of the local societies (who date back


to the 1920s), Lyme Youth Theatre or one of the dozens of world famous acts that have appeared here over the years (including Jimmy Cagney, Michael McIntyre, Status Quo and Jo Brand) there has always been excellent, affordable nights out in Lyme. SIX DAYS

CLASSIC CLAPTON

They’re acoustic musicians whose talent belies their age. Ellie and Ollie Harris are Six Days, the sibling singer-songwriters from Colyton who have touched many local audiences with their impressive natural talent and harmonies.

Since their self-titled EP release in 2013, Six Days have developed their style, using Americana and folk influences to create a beautiful melodic set. They’ve got a growing local fan base, and have been busy hot footing it between local venues and festivals ever since.

The release of their single Choose Me Again led to regular appearances, and support from BBC Introducing, whilst their album Live at The Marine, is an intimate concert recorded at our theatre in 2013, and is available now!

Classic Clapton claims to be the World’s No.1 Eric Clapton tribute act...and we have to agree!

Returning to the Marine Theatre, this acclaimed show features front-man Mike Hall, who not only looks like Eric, but he sings and plays guitar like him too. The band were formed in 1985 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and over the past thirty years they’ve become something of an institution, performing all over the world.

On stage, the talented band bring the hits of Slowhands alive, with Wonderful Tonight, I Shot The Sheriff, Lay Down Sally, Crossroads, Tears in Heaven, Layla and even an unplugged segment. The set covers Clapton’s career from Cream, The Bluesbreakers, The Yardbirds, Blind Faith and Derek & The Dominos through to the solo years.

A must-see for any Clapton fans!

BENDRIXBenji Kirkpatrick is a musician and songwriter, founding acclaimed folk bands Bellowhead and Faustus. Not only that, he’s toured extensively with folk legends Maddy Prior and Seth Lakeman too. And now he visits Lyme Regis.

With Bellowhead announcing in June 2015 that they were to split up, this show is a special opportunity to see Benji live in an intimate setting. Join him as he reinterprets the songs of

Jimi Hendrix on banjo, mandolin and bouzouki, stripping back the layers of the era’s psychedelia to reveal the songs in their purest form.

Remembered for his pioneering, exceptional ability as a guitarist, on (and off) stage antics, Hendrix’s legacy extends to a wealth of legendary material. In his own individual style, Benji interprets Hendrix like you’ve never heard him before...Hear his train a-comin’!

GLORIATORIt’s 15 years since Ridley Scott brought the epic Hollywood film Gladiator to the big screen. Now you can follow the glamorous French actress, Gloria Delaneuf, and her hapless UK tour manager, Josephine Cunningham, as they stage their riotously funny stage version, Gloriator.

Gloria Delaneuf is world-famous. She’s well-versed in mime, mask, and the mysteries of stage-craft. Her UK tour manager Josephine Cunningham is not. Together they have created Gloriator, an awe-inspiring production of bravery, honour, and costumes made out of cardboard.

Russell Crowe may not be available, but they are determined it will be a show you’ll never forget. It’s wonderfully inventive, physical, and very silly.

MARK THOMAS TRESPASSLet’s look at the world from another viewpoint; if the ramblers of the 1930s were here now what would they do to open up the cities? How do we turn the skyscrapers and corporate squares into our playgrounds?

In his latest show, Trespass, Mark carries on from where he left off when he last visited the Marine with 100 Acts of Minor Dissent. Mixing theatre performance, stand up and journalism with a dollop of mayhem, Mark sets out to carve a small space in the urban world where mischief and random chance can lurk.

Mark calls himself a “libertarian anarchist”, but he has also been labelled a “domestic extremist” – a nice polite description for such a high-profile comedian, whose alternative observational comedy still cuts close to the edge after thirty years.

No one knows where this trickster show is going to end up, but it will leave you thinking after you’ve finished laughing.

TOLD BY AN IDIOTTHE SEARCH FOR EL DORADOAcclaimed UK touring company Told by an Idiot will be researching and developing their latest production at the Marine Theatre as the first company in this autumn’s R&D by the Sea season. It will be based on the story of the Spanish invasion of South America and their search for the mythical place, El Dorado, where they believed the rivers ran with gold.

Jean Genie are the best David Bowie tribute men that fell to Earth, originally created by John Mainwaring and John Ford in 1993.

John Mainwaring is an original recording artist in his own right, and was signed by numerous record companies throughout his career. In the late 1990s he was approached by David Bowie’s most famous band of the 1970s, The Spiders from Mars, and asked by them if he’d front the band and tour with them. John remains to this day one of only a few tribute artists to tour and perform with an original artist’s band.

He’s certainly the Starman of the moment, so enjoy the Golden Years and Let’s Dance!

KILL THE BEAST


JEREMY HARDYJeremy’s perhaps best remembered as a much younger man, but there is nothing he can do about that now. Still alive and able to speak unaided for lengthy periods, this comedy show will be not so much a one-man show, as an under-staffed cavalcade.

Jeremy Hardy begins his fourth decade as a stand-up this year. That’s a more dramatic way of saying he started 31 years ago and, without a lottery win, probably has at least another 31 years to go. Last year, the tenth series of Jeremy Hardy Speaks to the Nation was broadcast on Radio 4. He is also well known for his appearances on The News Quiz and I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue. Indeed, Alan Bennett recently said he likes him “but he’s only on the radio”. However, Jeremy isn’t only on the radio. He is on the road all year round and has never stopped doing live shows since 1984.

FRED MACAULAY TWENTY FIFTEENIt sounds like a wrong tennis score, but Twenty Fifteen is a hugely significant year for one of Scotland’s best (and best loved) stand-up comedians. On the road again after 18 years at BBC Radio Scotland, Fred looks back on family life at home, and forward to how his country will shape up after the referendum. In his first tour since 2012 he’ll look sideways too, as he takes in sport, the environment and, without this sounding too much like a brief for a newspaper, a colour-supplement swipe at ‘celebrity’.

Marine Theatre audiences will be very familiar with Fred’s work from BBC Radio 4’s The News Quiz, Bridget Christie Minds The Gap and The Unbelievable Truth.

KAREN STREET & PHILIP CLOUTSAccordionist Karen Street joins pianist Philip Clouts for an evening of jazz with added Brazilian flavours.

Karen has played alongside renowned UK musicians Martin Taylor, Stan Sulzman and Tina May as well as Grace Jones, Martha Wainwright, Ute Lemper and Sir Willard White. She continues to be in the vanguard of those musicians giving the accordion a fresh voice in jazz. Catch her, alongside Philip Clouts, for the last in this year’s sell out Jazz in the Bar concerts. KIMBER’S MENFrom the very west of Wales to the extreme East of England, from the tippermost top of Scotland to the harbours of Portsmorth, Plymouth and the seafaring ports beyond, audiences everywhere have raved over the harmonies of Kimber’s Men. Now they return to the Marine for a festive evening of maritime song.

Their pedigree is stunning. Featuring arguably the finest bass singer on the British folk scene today, alongside founder Joe Stead who performed with Paul Robeson and Pete Seeger, the band recently featured on ITV’s Sunday Brunch, as well as starring in the BBC2 / BBC4 production of Sea Songs (the latter being the most viewed programme of the year on BBC4).

LYME YOUTH THEATREThe Marine Theatre’s youth theatre LYT is aimed at children and young people between 5-21 who love the theatre and want to develop their creative skills. Lead by LYT’s professional tutors, actors and directors, our young ensemble take part in fun yet challenging classes, learning acting through drama, text, movement, voice work, character building and devising; all of which combine to enhance confidence and nurture creativity.

LYT provides members with exclusive backstage access to a fully functioning professional theatre, enabling our ensemble to develop their skills whilst gaining an extensive understanding of all aspects of theatre life.

As if that wasn’t enough, LYT members also take part in workshops with visiting theatre companies, regular classes, National Theatre Connections projects, and can come along to selected shows for just £1!

FROM THE EAST: From the M3 take the M27 to Ringwood and then the A31 on to Dorchester. From Dorchester take the A35 towards Honiton and follow the signs to Lyme Regis.

BY RAIL London Waterloo to Exeter St Davids, services call at Axminster (for Lyme Regis). Then take a bus connection to Lyme Regis.

ACCESSIBILITY The Marine Theatre strives to make our facilities and performances as accessible to as wide an audience as possible. Whilst our venue is accessible to disabled customers, we are currently working hard to fundraise for improvements to our 118 year-old building that would dramatically enhance the experience of disabled patrons visiting the Marine Theatre.
