Last year we started a very exciting programme here at the Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis.

It’s called R&D by the Sea.

R&D by the Sea is the Marine Theatre’s nurturing programme for new and developing work.

We all need space to think. Lyme Regis, set in the heart of England’s first natural UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounded by 95 miles of truly stunning coastline with rocks recording 185 million years of the Earth’s history, has just that.

It’s not often ideas come fully formed. We need time to delight, surprise, scare and confuse ourselves. To give ourselves fertile ground on which to develop. To invest in hours of research and then to forget all about it. This is where R&D by the Sea comes in.

R&D by the Sea gives artists use of the theatre and its facilities, normally for a five-day period, to develop their work. We’ve invited writers, actors, theatre makers and practitioners of all kinds to come to Lyme Regis. Unfold, unlock and explore a vision, a feeling, a thought. Draw from our landscape, history, communities and people.

And at the end of their week-long stay, we’ve invited these artists to share what they’ve found.

With you.

We’re very excited to be welcoming two companies to Lyme Regis this autumn under the R&D by the Sea umbrella. Each sharing will be entirely different. It may last 10 minutes. It may last an hour. We can’t tell you much about them, as they haven’t been made yet. All we ask is that you come along with a warm heart and an open mind. You’ll get a chance to chat to the company afterwards and fill out a feedback form with your thoughts. We’d love to hear what you think.

SHARING 1

Unstable King present “Game”,a four–man circus-theatre show – Friday 17th October at 7.00pm

SHARING 2

OddManOut present “From there to you from here to me”, an exploration of memory and a search for truth – Friday 28th November at 4.00pm

We’ll be inviting more companies to take part in the R&D by the Sea programme over the course of the autumn, so keep an eye on www.marinetheatre.com for details other sharings coming up. Previous companies presented under the R&D by the Sea programme have gone on to tour the work developed both at home and at the Marine Theatre abroad. We are very proud that RemoteControl had their piece La Donna è Mobile nominated for a Total Theatre Award at the 2013 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Working in a building with a 118-year history can sometimes be a problem, and when that building is right next to the sea things can be even trickier. An extensive survey has revealed that in order to preserve the Marine, its two roofs are in desperate need of repair, with the pitch roof needing re-insulating, re-pitching and re-slating. Work to re-gutter, repair mortaring, paint the walls and treat the sea-facing timbers, along with the addition of solar panels, will add to the longevity and the economic and environmental sustainability of the theatre. The total cost of this work is estimated to be somewhere in the region of £95,000.

The building has survived for generations through the support of the community. With your help we want to guarantee the people of Lyme Regis a theatre at the heart of the Jurassic Coast for another 119 years.

We’ve got a great history of fantastic performance here in Lyme.

Whether it’s one of the local societies (who date back to the 1920s), Lyme Youth Theatre or one of the dozens of world famous acts that have appeared here over the years (including Jimmy Cagney, Michael McIntyre, Status Quo and Jo Brand) there has always been excellent, affordable nights out in Lyme. Unless we can fix the roof, that tradition is under threat. If you feel you’re able to make a contribution, however small, please visit www.marinetheatre.com. If you’d rather not donate online, please pop in to the theatre or send a cheque in the post made payable to LymeArts Community Trust. Any help is very, very gratefully received. Thank you.

Tim, Harry, Nigel, Julia and all of the Marine Theatre Team.

When presented with the opportunity of a performance from Dark Americana songstress, Jessie Kilguss, we jumped at the chance.

Travelling from the USA for a one night only performance at the Marine Theatre, Kilguss and her band are used to crossing the water, often touring the USA and Europe with their successful blend of folk, country and rock influences. Jessie co-wrote her first two records with gold record award-winning production team Super Buddha (Blondie, Rufus Wainright.)

“Jessie Kilguss is in the midst of a ferocious creative development; I see a great artist coming quite quickly into her own. I feel she’s on the brink of something big and I can’t wait to see what it is.” Super Buddha

R & D By The Sea – photographs by Peter WilesThursday 18th – Sunday 28th September

Afternoon Tea with Wendy CopeSaturday 20th September

An exhibition featuring photographs of the artists taking part in the Marine Theatre’s R&D by the Sea programme. This artist development programme gives visiting theatre companies the opportunity to develop new work away from the commercial

pressures of their chosen artform. For more information on R&D by the Sea please see page 5.

More photographs can be found in the theatre and Lym House Open Studio, 1 Mill Green, during Lyme Regis ArtsFest.

Join Wendy Cope for an afternoon of poetry, tea and cucumber sandwiches, deliciously devised by local cafe Aroma.

A completely fresh and entertaining setting for a poetry reading from the quiet phenomenon who has proved quality can be popular, Wendy Cope is an award-winning poet, noted for her excellent wit and harmonious relationship between poetry and real life, and has been writing for 25 years. Her poems include the acclaimed ‘Bloody Men’ and ‘Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis’ and she was awarded a Michael Braude award for light verse (American Academy of Arts and Letters) and an OBE in 2010.

This slightly seditious but seriously good ironic moan about life’s little irritations over a sarnie and a cuppa with Wendy has proved unfailingly popular. The afternoon will be rounded off with a question and answer session plus an after-show book signing.

Back at the Marine after their barn-storming-foot-stamping-banjo-playing-sell-out visit in 2011, Hayseed Dixie have sold over half a million albums worldwide and played more than 1,000 live shows on every continent except Antarctica.

Hayseed Dixie was formed in the summer of 2000 on the front porch of a cabin in the Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee, when after drinking enough whiskey to float a battleship across the Sahara Desert, it became suddenly obvious to the boys that the “Lost Highway” of Hank Williams and the “Highway To Hell” of AC/DC were the same damned road.

Acknowledged as the creators of the musical genre “Rockgrass”, the band have released 10 albums containing both original songs and reinterpretations of previously known works, albeit in their own inimitable style.

After an interval, he will intrigue, amuse and move us with more photographs and stories about his 30-year career as a photojournalist. All in aid of the Marine Theatre’s Raise the Roof fund. For more information of the Marine Theatre’s roof (and it’s numerous holes!), please see page 5.

When impoverished pearl-diver Kino finds the ‘pearl of the world’ he believes his family’s life will be transformed forever. Seduced by the pearl’s beauty and promise of riches, he is blind to the danger of having something that everyone else wants. Instead of bringing hope, the pearl leads Kino and his family down a dark and dangerous path.

A timeless fable about the allure of wealth, the confines of class, and the redemptive power of love. The Pearl asks us to consider what we value most in the world.

We cannot completely rely on our memories, and yet, there is no reality other than that we carry with us in memory.

Award-winning theatre company NIE (New International Encounter) have made a very special movable theatre, and they are bringing it to the Marine for one very special day.

With warmth, music and humour, 5 actor-musicians tell the story of someone they have lost. Museum of Memories is an exploration of life, death and memory; the way that one life touches another, the important things that pass between us and the ripples and echoes that we leave behind.

The audience for this portable theatre, constructed inside our auditorium, will be sat inside the 70m2 intimate venue and given the chance to experience something new with the action close up. After the performance, you are free to explore the space - open drawers, look at pictures and objects and discover memories.

Museum of Memories opened on the 27th April 2012 on Tulinløkka, between The National Museum and The National Gallery in the heart of Oslo. The show is now touring both in Norway and internationally, and is supported by The Norwegian Arts Council, Spenn, Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Arts Council England.

1558. A country divided by religion and politics, teetering on the brink of civil war. The hopes of the nation lie with one woman.

2014. England. A country divided by those who enjoy plays featuring men in dresses, and those who don’t. The hopes of the nation lie with two Bristolian actors.

But Howard Coggins and Stuart Mcloughlin can no longer rely on apparent physical resemblances to Tudor monarchs. They’ve done Henry VIII, and the truth is neither of them look like anyone else.

They’re just going to have to dig a little deeper. Act a little better. Live a little dangerous-er, as they attempt to tell the story of the greatest

Monarch that ever lived.

With more live original music, silly songs, smutty shenanigans, perfunctory props, and hysterically historical horseplay, this promises to be (another) poorly researched lesson in Tudor history that you’ll never forget…

Lyme Regis audiences will know the enormously tall and ridiculously talented Stu Mcloughlin from his work with Shanty Theatre Company. Living Spit have become firm favourites at the Marine since first appalling audiences in 2012 with their hit production The Six Wives of Henry VIII.

The Dave Kelly BandSaturday 8th November

If there is such a thing as a British ‘blues pedigree’, then Dave Kelly sets the standard. Kelly is a blues craftsman – a journeyman who has served his time with the best.

Many know Dave from his work as a founding member of the Blues Band. But when they started back in 1979 he was already a seasoned blues artist with a reputation across the world. He’s played with Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, and won the British Blues Awards acoustic artist of the year for five consecutive years.

Now he returns to the Marine for an evening of music with his very own group, The Dave Kelly Band.

Local company 3QB in association with Lyme Regis Dramatic Society, Lyme Youth Theatre and actors enlisted from all over the area are proud to present

Oh, What a Lovely War Tuesday 11th November – Saturday 15th November

To mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War – and as a fundraiser for the Marine Theatre – local company 3QB, alongside the Marine Theatre, have signed up groups from across Lyme to stage our very own community production of Joan Littlewood’s musical entertainment Oh, What a Lovely War!

Built upon the rousing score of popular tunes that ordinary British soldiers sang during a war that killed ten million in four years, this

Musical Entertainment production is a powerful comment against war.

First seen fifty years ago at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East, where the play was created by Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop Company, Gerry Raffles, Charles Chilton and with title suggested by Ted Allen, the show was an instant success and has been delighting and moving audiences ever since.

The Women of World War OneA tribute in words, music & imagesFriday 21st November

Women of World War One is a powerful and moving portrait of women’s lives during The Great War, created by Musicians South West in collaboration with Petra Schofield/Magic Penny Productions.

Poetry and prose on the subject of women’s experiences of this cataclysmic event are vividly illustrated with slides and with music for piano, stringed instruments and voice by female composers who were writing during the War.

Factory workers, nurses, those in the Women’s Land Army, fiancées, wives, mothers and daughters tell their stories in their own words, through letters, diaries and poems. Their emotions are eloquently expressed in the music of their contemporaries: Rebecca Clarke, Melanie Bonis, Nadia and Lili Boulanger, and the recently rediscovered songwriter, Muriel Herbert.
