The witnessThe witnessThe witnessThe witness A PUBLICATION OF TOMS BROOK UNITED METHODIST CHURCH– MARCH 2016
Greetings my friends in the Name of the Lord!
The Apostle Paul wrote in Galatians 6:9 “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good.
At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.”
This is a year of new beginnings. This really is a new day for Toms Brook United
Methodist Church. A new pastor, me, about to finish my first year. Our church is
growing again for which we are grateful to the Lord and the TBUMC Fair Booth min-
istry came to end after forty fruitful years. Sometime in the near future, we will cele-
brate and honor all those who worked diligently to make the fair booth ministry the
success it was. As we look forward to the future many ministry opportunities are be-
ing prayed over.
Tom Eshelman, SCFA General Manager, has offered for us to build a new booth near
the cattle barns for about $35,000. However, we would not own it; it would belong to
the Shenandoah County Fair Association, who could let whoever they wanted use it
during the year. Add that to gambling on horse races coming soon to the fairgrounds,
with the possibility of alcohol being served, seems to indicate that we could be better
stewards of the Lord’s money by using it in other ways like building our own picnic
shelter and selling bean soup right here at our church in Toms Brook. Or perhaps
there is some other way of doing ministry we haven’t thought of yet. This is a new day
for our church, and I am glad to be here and be a part of it. Although our future may
seem uncertain, one thing I know for sure: “At just the right time we will reap a har-
vest of blessing if we don’t give up.”
The peace of God be with you,
Pastor Stan
A conference-wide prayer day to pray for the General Conference will be held on April 10, 2016.

WHAT DO THE TRUSTEES AND FINANCE COMMITTEES DO IN A CHURCH?
It is apparent that in the local church the work of the Board of Trustees and the Finance Committee are two of the most confusing and misunderstood in the church. Because of that, you are invited and encouraged to join District Superintendent Tommy Herndon and District Program Coordinator Glen Langston in learning more about the work of the Board of Trustees led by Tommy, and the Finance Committee led by Glen. A 90-minute workshop will be offered on each of these two sub-jects on the following dates and locations:
Sunday, March 6, 3:00 - 4:30 at Manor Memorial UMC in New Market
Tuesday, March 8, 7:00 - 8:30 at Toms Brook UMC
Thursday, March 10, 7:00 - 8:30 at Bethany UMC, Weyers Cave

In 1976, the Toms Brook Methodist Men opened the TBUMC Fair Booth for the first
time. Now 40 years later, the fair booth, as we know it, is over. If you want to know more
about the history of the fair booth, purchase a Toms Brook United Methodist Church History
book and learn how our church became what it is today. The book can be purchased from the
church library or church office. You may also call Gloria Ryman (540-436-3652).

Christian Symbol
Almond-In Numbers 17:1-8,
God settles a dispute among
the Israelites by directing
Moses to obtain a staff from
each of Israel’s 12 tribes and
to place the staffs in the Tent
of Meeting. The one repre-
senting the tribe God chose
would sprout. The next day,
not only had the staff of Aa-
ron, representing the tribe of
Levi, sprouted, but it had
blossomed and borne ripe
almonds. Thus, the almond
came to symbolize God’s
approval. By extension, it
has also been used as a sym-
bol of the Virgin Mary, who
found divine favor and was
chosen to bear God’s Son.
