Japan Cultural Development was organized under JBSD to promote a friendship between U.S. and Japan after the local Japan community’s involvement in the Grand Bargain to save the city of Detroit and the Detroit Institute of Arts. Japan Cultural Development focuses on culture, arts and education in the U.S. and Japan.

Ms. Ishigure is a New York-based musician who has been playing Koto (Japanese horizontal harp) and Shamisen (three stringed Japanese guitar) professionally for more than 25 years across the U.S. and internationally. This is Ms. Ishigure’s second appearance at the DIA after her superb performance at the opening event of the Robert & Katherine Jacobs Asian Wing in November, 2018.

Neo Japanesque is a Nagoya, Japan-based band who performs across Japan, Asia and the U.S. The five-member band includes Japanese traditional instruments such as the taiko (drum), shakuhachi (bamboo vertical flute) and shinobu (bamboo flute), and western instruments such as the bass, keyboard, and drums. They play a wide range of music from their own original songs to well-known scores of Japanese and Western-fused music. Their performances evoke the feeling of Japanese scenery and culture and their fusion melodies bridge not only Japan and Detroit, but history with today.

Ms. Fujii is a metro Detroit-based Japanese Calligraphy master who performs at local events. She’s performed at almost every Hinamatsuri event at the DIA and this year will perform to music.

Rivera CourtMarch 2 & 3, 1–1:30 p.m.

This will be the finale of the Hinamatsuri 2019 event! It will feature live performers from Imagine Japan, as well as a fashion show of traditional Japanese clothing created by local families specifically for this event with the theme of celebrating life in America, especially Detroit and Michigan.

The Ura-Senke school lead by Master Soyu Nabeta and Omote-Senke, lead by Master Sochi Koehler will collaborate on Rivera Court stage. Sencha green tea will be served in the Great Hall.
