Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students

On Wednesday MSM celebrated International Women’s Day.

The United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) on 8 March during International Women’s Year 1975. Two years later, in December 1977, the General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by Member States, in accordance with their historical and national traditions.

International Women’s Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe. Since those early years, International Women’s Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike. The growing international women’s movement, which has been strengthened by four global United Nations women’s conferences, has helped make the commemoration a rallying point to build support for women’s rights and participation in the political and economic arenas.

Increasingly, International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.http://www.unwomen.org/en/news/in-focus/international-womens-day#sthash.TLNWaqOx.dpuf

are all members of one human family. Each of us is equally worthy of respect and compassion”.

Each week during Lent, Project Compassion shares stories revealing some of the ways that lives can be transformed when we follow Jesus’ instruction to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39). This week’s story is about Martina, an East Timorese mother of eight, who escaped domestic violence by finding refuge in a shelter. It is fitting to share this story as we reflect upon the messages of International Women’s Day.

Martina, an East Timorese mother of eight, escaping domestic violence was the first step in her journey to a new life. But at first, her future seemed very uncertain. Timor-Leste is one of the least developed countries in the world, with extremely low levels of basic health, literacy and income. Most East Timorese live in rural areas, with very limited access to basic services or livelihood training, and many households don’t have enough food year round.

The shelter where Martina sought refuge, Uma PAS, offered her many ways to transcend these challenges. Uma PAS is a partner in Caritas Australia’s Protection Program, a holistic community-wide program in Timor-Leste that offers women like Martina economic empowerment and a life of safety in a supportive community.

Through the program, she was linked with a network of support services, and this enabled her to undertake livelihood training and start a small business to support her children. The program also linked her with a supportive community.

“Martina is a person who did not want to give up, but wanted to be able to support her family,” her counsellor at the shelter says. Through the Protection Program, Martina says, “I have learnt how to change my life to support myself, and my children.”

The MSM community has been generous in our support of Project Compassion through activities such as the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Sales. Thank you!

In faith and love

Metropolitan North Swim Team - congratulations to the following students on gaining selection in the Met North Swim Team. We wish our swimmers good luck for the Queensland School Swimming Championships at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, March 23 to March 25.Alyissa Spohn (12 years) Tabatha Fachin (13 years) Lucy Ferris (13 years) Georgia Walker (14 years) Emma Donaldson (15 years) Meg Harris (15 years) Mackenzie Harris (17 years) Katie Scott (17 years).

There were some great results for our MSM athletes at the Queensland State Athletics Carnival over the weekend at the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre. Congratulations goes to Sabrina Blasl, Brooke Gilmeister, Josie Hogan and

Keeley Brettell and Clare Ryan (Year 12) competed in the Ashgrove/The Gap district for the Lions Youth of the Year Competition. They were required to speak for 2 minutes on 2 unseen questions and then deliver a 5 minute speech. Clare’s speech focused on the difficulties modern society has with imperfection. Keeley’s speech used the metaphor of a chessboard, likening modern society to a game where the breadth and depth of experiences and the care of those less fortunate is overlooked in the desire to win. Both students were outstanding and an absolute credit to MSM and the work of all of their teachers. Clare Ryan was the overall winner on the night and advanced to the next round of the competition last Sunday.

Clare then proceeded to compete against five other students in the zone final of the competition. She impressed the judges with her interview, impromptu speaking and public speaking skills as well as her general knowledge of world issues. She spoke confidently and engaged her audience with her logical and thought provoking prepared speech. Clare was awarded the best speech of the competition and was chosen to compete in the regional final this weekend. Congratulations to Clare for this fantastic achievement.

Olivia Hunt for making the Queensland Team. A special mention and thanks to our Coach, Eric Brown, for training and guiding our athletes on the path to success!

Sasha Brooks (Year 7) represented the Metropolitan North region at the Queensland School Sport State Triathlon Championships in Hervey Bay last week. In the Junior Girls Division, for athletes fourteen years and under, Sasha (who is still twelve) placed an outstanding fifteenth out of sixty three competitors from across the state. Sasha swam 400m, cycled 12kms and ran 3kms in a time of 46:42. Congratulations Sasha!

Congratulations to this year’s Year 11 University of Queensland Science Ambassadors: Jamila Rodbert (Chemistry), Sarah Roper (Chemistry), Claire Dempsey (Physics), Emma Lugge (Biology) and Melissa Drummond (Biology). They work as liaisons between the University and the College and assist the Science Department at Science events this year.

International Women’s Day - 8 March

MSM was certainly #Beboldforchange for International Women’s Day as we celebrated with Lorna Jane, Phoebe Parsons and the Firebirds, Gabi Simpson and Gretel Tipett.

This was an opportunity to enhance our Wellbeing Programme at MSM as Lorna led with her 'Move, Nourish, Believe Schools Programme'. This aligns with our POS ED anchors which educate our young women on how to lead a flourishing life.

The Sophia Centre was animated as Lorna Jane led a discussion and answered questions from the students along with Firebirds, Gabi and Gretel. As women we stood united, as we celebrated IWD 2017.

Ministry of care

Mt St Michael’s Staff and students takes great pride in the Mission and Values of the College and as an extension of this, we will continue with our Ministry Care Programme in 2017.

We are aware that there are students and families within our community who are at risk due to a variety of factors. So, through the various networks of the Parents & Friends Association, the College Foundation, the Past Pupils, the Pastoral Programme at the College and simply by word of mouth, we hope to become aware of these situations and to respond on a case by case basis.

The College acknowledges that just by being here we are carrying on the mission and vision of the Foundress of the Sisters of Charity, Mary Aikenhead. The poor, the vulnerable, the marginalised in society were always close to the heart of Mary Aikenhead.

During the course of 2016 we responded as a community through preparing meals for families whose difficult circumstances we had been made aware of. We will continue this over the course of this year.

If you would like to contribute to the Ministry Care Programme and support those who are going through difficult times, please contact Stephen Campion on [email protected]
