March 2018
TECHNICAL CORNER We had a great turnout
at Maggiano’s Little Italy
in Cherry Hill, New Jersey
for Tom Pitcherello’s New
Jersey Plumbing Code
updates. Tom informed
us IAPMO has bought the
rights to the National
Standard Plumbing Code
and IAPMO will keep the Code commit-
tee as is. New Jersey is in the process of
adopting the NSPC 2018 that will take ef-
fect around the end of the year.
Some major points in the updates were:
• Air cannot be used to test PVC pipe.
• CSST pipe must be bonded.
DCA's website has the current NSPC
available as a viewable only file.
Several attendees asked questions about
the New Jersey code:
• Secondary roof drains: New Jersey has
deleted the provisions for an inde-
pendent secondary system, but some
means is still required to protect the
roof from failure, i.e. scuppers or a
second roof drain. The second roof
drain does not have to be independ-
ent; the drainage pipe may combine
with the primary system.
• Emergency showers do not require
floor drains.
• Hot water temperatures are increas-
ing from 110◦F to 120◦F-140◦F in the
New Jersey Code. The Health Depart-
ment wants to limit hot water temper-
ature to 110◦F or less. This poses a
conflict between the two depart-
ments. Tom mentioned a possible so-
lution.
• Sump pumps are to discharge through
an indirect waste connection and ele-
vator sump pumps shall discharge to
grade. DCA feels elevator pump are
for firewater removal, which is similar
to rainwater. The elevator sump
pump still requires an oil switch to stop
the pump in the event oil is detected
in the elevator pit.
Tom stated to call him at DCA with any
questions concerning the New Jersey
plumbing code. He looks forward to your
questions.
This month we will heard from Jody Sam-
uell, Caleffi about Hydraulic Separators.
Jody will be presenting at Georgine’s res-
taurant in Bristol, PA on March 22. In ad-
dition, we will discuss any challenges or
conflicts being experience at work that
you care to share. Come, learn, and
share from the fountain of knowledge
that is available at the meeting.

Mr. William O'Donnell CPD
American Society of Plumbing Engineers, Philadelphia Chapter
Dear Mr. O'Donnell:
The 2018 Philadelphia Regional Future City Competition was a great success
thanks to our many supporters including ASPE-PC. Your contribution of $500,
received 11/6/2017, was a great help in funding the competition and its many
awards. This was a wonderful outpouring of appreciation to the over 300 middle
school students, their teachers and engineer mentors who participated on
January 20.
Your Plumbing Technology Award was presented to the team from:
Lionville Middle School
550 West Uwchlan Avenue
Exton, PA 19341
Mr. Guy Raines
610-524-6300
A photo of the team winning your special award will be sent to you via email.
Additional photos of the competition are available on our website at
www.futurecityphilly.org.
We encourage you to invite the team receiving your special award to a function
at a society meeting and given an opportunity to display their model. They love
to talk about their Future City experience and their model.
The Philadelphia Regional winning team is Queen of Angels Regional Catholic
School and will be competing in the National Competition on February 20.
The Philadelphia Regional Future City Competition is a 501(c)3 educational
program. Contributions are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.
If you want, you may make your pledge now for the 2019 competition, using
