PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hello: It’s hard to believe but I only have three months left in my term as Chapter President. I have many mixed feelings, as we have accomplished many important things and have other issues we did not ac-complish. Yet many members will tell you what they think
we should be doing but will not take the op-portunity to join a committee and make a difference. In the mid-80’s I was President of a local Volunteer Fire Company and we faced the same challenges. But when an alarm came in all members put their gear on and fought the fire no matter what time of day it was. Last time I talked to the fire com-pany their membership is also diminished. We as a society have slowly lost the desire to volunteer, somehow the social aspect of life has changed and we find ourselves in need of new volunteers. The average age of our Society members is in the mid 50’s and try-ing to motivate the younger members to step up is our greatest challenge. I have personal-ly talked to young members asking to fill a position called AYP. This means “ASPE Young Professional”. It’s a position where you communicate with other chapters to see what issues face the under age 35 Engineers and designers. That’s it, you bring these is-sues to our Board and we try to address what we can do here in Philly to improve our meetings, education program and any other area that needs attention. Just a couple of hours a month is all that we ask.
When I teach some of the classes in the Fall I recognize some very good young Engi-neers that have the desire to help grow our chapter. This has been successful as they have joined our Board in various positions and we benefit from their skills, knowledge and desire. But we need more young mem-bers to join us. Last meeting at Georgine’s I was approached by another young Engineer that also was in our Plumbing classes and again asked how can I help? I can’t tell you how thrilled I was to hear those words. I can hardly wait for the positive reply of YES! Next year I know the new Chapter President will carry the torch in this effort along with other new Board members. If you are hesi-tating about how or what you can do please contact me or any other Board member and join us for dinner at the next upcoming Board meeting at Sugar House Casino. In closing there is an old saying that goes like this, “If it’s worth doing, do it well” not sure where it came from but I have always put 110% into whatever task I take on. There are times in life when we need to decide our priorities and live by that list. I applaud all those dedicated men and women that see the need and fill that void with passion and de-sire. The American Heritage Dictionary de-scribes the word (DEDICATE) as follows: “To commit ( oneself ) to a particular course of thought or action” The act of dedicating or the state of being dedicated. All my best, Mike

TECHNICAL CORNER Last month, the weather
was not kind to the Dela-
ware Valley. The snow pre-
vented our speaker Kevin
Freidt, Caleffi Company
from arriving. Luck for us,
Ken White, Keystone Sales,
was willing and able to fill-in
for Kevin. Ken presented
the Kevin’s information. Here is a recap of
the presentation.
The average residential home waste 3650
gallons of water a year waiting for hot water.
ASPE Data Book would like hot water deliv-
ered in 30 seconds and recommends recir-
culation pipes be close to the fixtures to min-
imize dead legs. The design book recom-
mends pipe velocity less than 5 fps for hot
water and less than 8 fps for cold water.
OSHA recommends hot water return pumps
run continuously to ensure hot water deliv-
ery.
Another item of concern is Legionella.
ASHRAE 188, ASHRAE Guideline 12, OSHA,
WHO, & ASSE have commented on how to
minimized legionella exposure. Several plac-
es where Legionella can be found are spas,
swimming pools, cooling towers, and display
water fountains (i.e. malls).
Several methods are available for combat-
ting Legionella. Thermal disinfection is the
most prevalent method, which is to raise the
water temperature to 160-deg F and main-
tain the 160-deg F temperature for 15 to 30
minutes.
A little about Legionella temperature;: below
65-deg F, Legionella is dormant; between 65
-deg F and 120-deg F is prime Legionella
growth temperature; at 140-deg F, Legionel-
la is killed in a few minutes; and at 160-deg F,
Legionella is killed in seconds.
Mixing valves, manual and electronic, were
discussed. Manual mixing valves require a
maintenance person to go around the sys-
tem to make sure the entire system receives
the hot water for the time duration. Elec-
tronic mixing valves allow the water temper-
ature to be increase for Legionella control
and returned to normal without the need for
a maintenance person to inspect the entire
system. While the water temperature is ele-
vated, the entire system must be circulated.
Design steps for a recirculated system are:
(1) calculate the supply pipe heat loss for all
branches, (2) use a common delta tempera-
ture (10-deg F) from the supply to the fur-
thest outlet to determine the pump gpm,
and (3) use the longest run for the head loss
for the pump.
Each branch of the recirculated system re-
quires balancing valve and a balancing re-
port should be request to verify the system is
operating properly.
April’s topic is Epoxy coated cast iron pipe
by Pat McQuillan, New Age Casting Com-
pany, at Sugar House in Philadelphia, PA on
April 26th.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS MUST READ:
The future of our chapter
I just finished reading Mike
Panco’s (ASPE Philly Presi-
dent) article here in this very
newsletter. I have also been
thinking about the future of
ASPE Philly. After 10 years as
ASPE Philly’s Vice President of
membership, I have decided not to run for
re-election.
I want to share my thoughts and opinion on
the future of this chapter. ASPE Philadelphia
has real challenges on the horizon. I see a
new cross road and it will be here very soon.
Our chapter will have to decide to thrive or
perish. This decision will be decided by the
future leaders of ASPE Philadelphia. In my
opinion, what the chapter needs are new
people on the board, new future leaders.
The people I have worked with at ASPE Phil-
adelphia for the last 13 years are my friends,
my mentors, and my family. I have created
relationships that will last me the rest of my
days. Sitting at ASPE board meetings since
2003 gave me a priceless experience at the
foot of a very wise learning tree. I listened to
people smarter than me, with more life and
business experience than me. As I grew and
changed, I did so with a wonderful group of
people. I am excited and desperate to see
new young leaders emerge. To have the
same rich experience that I did. I want that
for you. For all of you.
Fact: ASPE Philly needs new people to bring
new ideas. Ideas that can bring the chapter
into a position that is welcoming to new
members of every age and experience lev-
elLeaders that would be responsible for
events, meeting topics, communications,
and social gatherings that would be of inter-
est to you.
In his article Mike made mention the open
position AYP liaison, ASPE young profession-
al. I think this is a cool endeavor. Mike ex-
plained the official responsibilities of this of-
fice. The position of AYP would be beneficial
to our chapter. One suggestion is to incor-
porate new events with the goal of building
a social group for young engineers to net-
work. For example, an outing in the North-
ern Liberties section of the city just to
meetup and socialize.
As you are reading this, I challenge you to
try and consider the possibilities of what you
want from ASPE Philadelphia. Sitting on the
board in ANY capacity gives you a voice
and ability to make changes for the better.
It is important that you know the board sup-
ports its members. Best of all you have ac-
cess to the funds and resources needed to
actualize those changes.
Ultimately, it’s up to you to make changes.
Want to move the meetings closer to you?
Come to a board meeting. Have an idea
for a topic? Bring it to the board. Know of
something fun to do? Come to a board
meeting.
See you soon.
