ing this ASPE 2019-2020 year.

time. To attend the virtual meeting, make a res-

there is no charge for attending, but you are re-
quested to make a reservation to get the meet-
ing notice. I hope that this autumn we will be
able to gather for person-to-person meetings. I
do so miss our gatherings.

elect will be continuing to run your chapter. If

LEGISLATIVE NEWS Did you know the 2021 IPC, First Printing March 2020, has been released? Check out
some of the changes from the 2018 to the 2021 IPC below (changes noted in blue): Definitions:
PRIVATE. In the classification of plumbing fixtures, "private applies to fixtures that are not public.
PUBLIC OR PUBLIC UTILIZATION. In the classification of plumbing fixtures, "public” applies to fixtures with
unrestricted exposure to walk-in traffic.
[M] 314.2.1.1 Condensate discharge.
Condensate drains shall not directly connect to any plumbing drain, waste or vent pipe. Condensate drains shall not
discharge into a plumbing fixture other than a floor sink, floor drain, trench drain, mop sink, hub drain, standpipe,
utility sink or laundry sink. Condensate drain connections to a lavatory wye branch tailpiece or to a bathtub overflow
pipe shall not be considered as discharging to a plumbing fixture. Except where discharging to grade outdoors, the point of discharge of condensate
drains shall be located within the same occupancy, tenant space or dwelling unit as the source of the condensate.
403.1-2 Single-user toilet and bathing room fixtures.
The plumbing fixtures located in single-user toilet and bathing rooms, including family or assisted-use toilet and bathing rooms that are required by
Section 1109.2.1 of the international Building Code, shall contribute toward the total number of required plumbing fixtures for a building or tenant
space. Single-user toilet and bathing rooms and family or assisted-use toilet rooms and bathing rooms shall be identified as being available for use
by all persons regardless of their sex. The total number of fixtures shall be permitted to be based on the required number of separate facilities or
based on the aggregate of any combination of single-user or separate facilities.
403.6 Service sink location.
Service sinks shall not be required to be located in individual tenant spaces in a covered mall provided that service sinks are located within a dis-

AFFILIATES CORNER I hope everyone is keeping safe and sane as we are in week 9 of Covid19. Our family has
adopted to the remote work environment with my wife teaching remotely in the spare bed-
room, my office is in the basement and our daughter, who graduated from Temple in De-
cember, began working March 1 and thankfully still employed is occupying the dining
room table. While I’m comfortable in my office surrounded by all the comforts of home,
getting back to the office would be refreshing as the days begin to blur and I can’t tell the
difference between a weekday and a weekend. Until then, I’m going to try and keep posi-
tive and look forward as the country begins to take steps towards business as usual.
Once again this month’s meeting will be held online Thursday, May 28th from 6 – 7:30PM, to register for the meeting

I wanted to acknowledge Jim Eyrich for his years of ser-
vice to the ASPE Philadelphia Board of Directors. Jim
has been a mainstay to the Chapter Board the last three
decades and has made the decision to step aside from his
position as his term ends this June. Jim has been one of the
most consistent and dedicated members of the Board and
gave great value to us by providing the Board leadership as
a strong voice of the Affiliate member.
We cannot thank you enough!
It truly has been a pleasure!
Enjoy the extra time at home!
We look forward to seeing you as a civilian
out at our future dinner meetings!

is a great party game, and this should be a fun virtual networking event.

Is there anything better than something for “free”? Okay, free may make you think of “There’s no
free lunch”, or “Nothing in life is free”. But free can be a wonderful word. It can bring a smile to
someone’s face. It can bring a crowd to an empty conference room (not under the current situation,
but at one time it did). And it can be tough to pass up something that is free, isn’t it?

Are you aware these free Webinars offer CEUs? Yes. FREE CEUs!!
Do you need CEUs to keep your credentials? If so, check out the ASPE
Website. During the last month, I completed two Read, Learn, Earn articles, one archived webinar
and a technical session. Not much, but that is more than I would normally do in a month. I recom-
mend the archived webinars. It allows you to be in control of the speed of the topic being presented. Rewind to hear a
point explained again. Pause to take a break or to expand on the notes you are taking.
The Read, Learn, Earn articles are a great way to read about a topic at your own pace. Download the article, read it, and
then take the quiz when you are ready. A new topic is added each month and the quiz is available for 1 year. All the an-
swers to the quiz are right there in the article…no need to do extra research. An open book quiz to earn CEUs? Oh, yeah!
Another way to earn CEUs is to attend the ASPE Philadelphia Technical Meeting! The Chapter is doing online learning
again this month. Look for the Philadelphia Chapter Meeting under Upcoming Webinars. This month’s topic is Proactive
Water Management Plans for Hospitals and Long-term Care Facilities. Watch, listen and learn with us on May 28 at 6pm.
You can attend in your after-work pajamas if you want.

sinks shall be located on an accessible route.
606.1 Location of full-open valves.
Full-open valves shall be installed in the following locations:
2.1. In multiple-tenant buildings, where a common water supply piping system is installed to supply other than one- and two-family dwellings, a main
shutoff valve shall be provided for each tenant.
607.1-1 Temperature limiting means.
A thermostat control for a water heater shall only serve as the temperature limiting means for the purposes of complying with the requirements of this
code for maximum allowable hot or tempered water delivery temperature at fixtures where the water heater complies with ASSE 1082 or ASSE 1085.
608.15.2.1 Relief port piping.
The termination of the piping from the relief port or air gap fitting of a backflow preventer shall discharge to an approved indirect waste receptor or to
the outdoors where it will not cause damage or create a nuisance. The indirect waste receptor and drainage piping shall be sized to drain the maximum
discharge flow rate from the relief port as published by the backflow preventer manufacturer.
705.2.4 Push-fit joints.
Push-fit DWV fittings shall be listed and labeled to ASME A112.4.4 and shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
708.1.6 Cleanout equivalent.
A fixture trap or a fixture with integral trap, removable without altering concealed piping, shall be acceptable as a cleanout equivalent.

903.1.4 Sidewall vent terminal.
Vent terminals extending through the wall shall terminate not less than 10 feet (3048 mm) from the lot line and 10 feet {3048 mm) above the highest
adjacent grade within 10 feet (3048 mm) horizontally of the vent terminal. Vent terminals shall not terminate under the overhang of a structure with
soffit vents. Sidewall vent terminals shall be protected to prevent birds and rodents from entering or blocking the vent opening.
1002.4.1.5 Fixture drain connection for trap priming.
A fixture drain from a lavatory or hand sink shall serve as a method of providing trap seal protection for an emergency floor drain a trench drain, or a
floor sink where such fixtures are located in the same room. A fixture drain from a drinking fountain shall serve as a method of providing trap seal pro-
tection for an emergency floor drain a trench drain, or a floor sink where such fixtures are in the same room or in a room adjacent to the room having the
drinking fountain. The fixture drain shall not be routed on or above the surface of the floor and shall connect to the floor drain, trench drain, or floor sink
at a point that is below the flood level rim and above the inlet to the trap of the receiving fixture.
1106.2.1 Rainfall rate conversion method.
The rainfall rate falling on a roof surface shall be converted to a gallon per minute (L/m) flow rate in accordance with Equation 11-1.
GPM = R × A × 0.0104 (Equation 11-1)
where:
R= Rainfall intensity in inches (mm) per hour.
A = Roof area in square feet (m2).

Remember to check with your local jurisdiction for amendments. The 2021 IPC has not been adopted in the City of Philadelphia, the Commonwealth of PA, or the

What’s up, Nerds! Hope you are all staying sane in a time where being insane may be the solution. My mother is a microbiologist dealing specifically with sterile manufacturing of drugs, which in-advertently, made me a hypochondriac in all things related to germs. These are some “chaos” theories that I now live with. In my 26 years I have never touched raw chicken in her house. You will most certainly spread salmonella to every nook and cranny if you do. While cleaning the bathroom, if your eyes are not water-ing, you are not using enough bleach.
I have become a decent cook these past couple of years. Meals including chicken
always take astronomically longer to prepare than any other food. Why? You
guessed it, the aseptic technique. My cleaning practice is now as robust as a ster-
ilization cycle that claims a 6 log reduction of Geobacillus stearothermophi-
lus. This of course leads to potential over cooking of the chicken, thankfully tim-
ers exist.
