Easter MessageYou don’t have to look too far to find a drama series or film about zombies. There seems to be a “walking dead” fascination, in serious or comic mode. But I was surprised to hear someone refer to Easter as “the Zombie Apocalypse, starring Jesus.” It was funny in its context, but carried the implied criticism that Easter is a silly wish fulfilment of those who will believe in practically anything. There can be a lot of silliness and insincerity around the practice of celebrating Easter, but the message of the Easter story itself is far more than a religious selling point. It is a way of expressing the central belief that life is tragic, but not ultimately so.

The story leading up to Easter, the “crucifixion”, tells how Jesus was condemned to death, falsely accused of religious blasphemy and political rebellion - an all too familiar tragedy of hubris by the powerful and suffering by the innocent. The tragic storyline that we’ve all grown accustomed to is that money talks, power wins and anyone who pretends otherwise needs to “get real”.

But the story of Jesus does not end with his tragic death. The stories of the “resurrection” are Jesus’ followers’ way of saying that Jesus was not just a fading memory. Teachings that left them puzzled before his death became their way of life after his resurrection. The way Jesus actually embodied the presence of God was how they came to express the “spirit” in them after the resurrection.

And the reign of God? Jesus always said it was present among them, but they could never quite accept that in a world dominated by the Roman Empire. After the resurrection, the reign of God was their way of life. The resurrection is not a story of a zombie stalking the earth. It is a story of life that ultimately overcomes the tragedy that we’ve all been taught to recognize as real life.

This Easter, whether you are a religious person or not, I invite you to talk about resurrection. In the end, resurrection is not about the walking dead; it is about those who have found new life.

Easter 2016We will close at 6.30pm on Thursday 25 March and reopen at 7.30am on Tuesday 29 March (telephone lines from 8 am). We will not be open on Saturday 26 March. Over the Easter weekend and all other times outside our normal opening hours please call 111 if you have an urgent medical problem.

Our Car ParkOur car park can be very busy when we are open, and sometimes our patients struggle to find parking places. We have been exploring ways to help ensure that the car park, which is private property, is used only by those people who are visiting the health centre. We are keen to involve the local community in seeking a satisfactory solution to the problem, and are therefore seeking Wendover residents’ views and suggestions. We would expect any system of controlling parking to be cost neutral to the health centre.

One option we are considering involves leasing out the car park to a private company who will monitor the number plates on all cars that enter it. If a car’s registration number is not inputted into a machine in the reception area, then the owner of the car concerned will be liable for a penalty charge. This will help prevent parking by those who are not genuine users of the health centre. The penalty charge will also apply to those parking overnight or at weekends, when the health centre is closed.

If you have any comments or suggestions on this issue please e-mail them to [email protected] or leave a note in reception FAO Enfys Lewis. Please head your message “WHC Car Park”.

WebGPwebGP can now be accessed through our website www.westongrove.com using a computer or a smartphone. It has self-help information on 100 common symptoms and conditions; it gives patients the opportunity to consult electronically with a member of the doctor team by completing a special form on-line, and can be used to raise administrative queries with the practice. The consultation tool is for patients who are 18 years old or over; at present it cannot be used to consult about children.

Dates when we close at 1pmWe will close at 1pm on Thursday 17 March, Wednesday 20 April and Tuesday 10 May for staff training. On these days please call 01296-850011 for any urgent problems between 1pm and 6.30pm.

This space paid for by Wendover Health Centre.

Petitions to HS2 Select Committee...Over the last two years a huge effort has been made by many individuals and community organisations such as the church, the parish, the Wendover Society and Wendover HS2 to compose, lodge and present over 1800 petitions. There is now a temporary halt while we wait to hear what recommendations the Select Committee will make. Whatever comes out of this wearing process, we owe a great debt of gratitude to all who have made the effort to petition, who have gritted their teeth in the face of HS2 Ltd’s intransigence at the hearings and who have made sure that our demand for fair treatment has been heard in Parliament. Thank you!

Richard Birch

“Seasons” ThanksI would like to thank the audience who attended the “Seasons of England” concert on 6 February in truly horrible wet weather. The 6 performers received a very warm reception from the start and the beautiful singing and reading of poems was obviously

appreciated which lifted the performers to give of their best.

For those who enjoyed the format of songs and poems, we shall be doing a similar programme called “A Summer Serenade” at the first Nettleden Festival (near Hemel) on 10 June.

This is a brand new festival and will take place over that weekend. Our show will be the opening event on the Friday evening.

Details are yet to be announced but I will place an advertisement in the News nearer the time. Now that we have these entertainments up and running, we would be interested to hear from anyone who would like to use them for fundraising purposes. You can email me at barbimcgill@ me.com if you have an enquiry.

Thank you once again for your warm reception, your applause and your lovely comments afterwards. Please come again.

Barbara McGillivray

Rozelle School of DancingI would like to say a big thank you to everyone

involved in our biennial dancing show “Across the Pond”, held at the Grange School on 7 February. We had 167 performers aged from 2-88 dancing in a combination of ballet, tap, theatrecraft and street. The proceeds of £1500 are to be donated to PACE. Well done to you all!

Sue Donald

Birthday ThanksIn December I had a special birthday and decided to invite family & friends to a party. I asked everyone to donate to charity instead of giving me a gift. Sixty-five guests between them raised £180 for Parkinson’s UK, £150 for Friends of Wendover Health Centre, and £140 for Hartwell RDA. Thank you to all my guests!

The story continued when I visited London a few days later and got to chatting with the taxi driver about the generosity of my party guests. When we arrived at the station, he refused to accept my taxi fare and instead suggested that I donate it to my chosen charities in honour of his young daughter, a cystic fibrosis sufferer. Human kindness!

MARCH 1916The war continued into its twentieth month with fighting on land and sea. Germany once again declared “unlimited” submarine warfare to break Britain by starving her of food. Shortly afterwards, the French cross-channel steamer, the Sussex, was sunk by a German submarine. Fifty lives were lost. There were many Americans on board, and although none were killed, America strongly condemned this atrocity. On land, Germany failed to make a breakthrough at Verdun, but there were heavy casualties on both sides. On the Italian Front the Fifth Battle of the Isonzo lasted through March without a significant outcome. Heavy fighting was reported from German East Africa where British-led troops were commanded by the South African General Smuts. There was no pause in the fighting in the British sector of the Western Front, particularly around Ypres.

On 18 March 1916 Private Thomas Wells of the Grenadier Guards was killed near Ypres. The Wendover Magazine reported:

“As we go to press we learn that another Wendover man has laid down his life for his country. Private T. Wells, the son of Mr John Wells of Dean Cottage, was killed in action. He is the eighth Wendover hero to be killed in the war. Private Wells was only 21 years of age and had been a long time at the front”.

Various local matters were reported in the Bucks Herald. At the Aylesbury Petty Sessions Henry Fantham, carter of Tring Road, Wendover, was summoned by Arthur Smith of 4, Clay Lane, for assault. Smith then applied to have the summons withdrawn. The Chairman, Dr West, said that the parties were neighbours and that they should try and live peaceably together.

“Shake hands, don’t quarrel again, and advise your wives not to talk too much”. The application was granted.

An article in the Bucks Herald of 11 March, headed “Bird Pests”, called attention to the loss of crops to the increasing bird population. The writer said that: “the Ground Game Act enabled farmers to keep down rabbits, but there were other more serious pests which were fostered by the desire to preserve game. There are countless hordes of rooks, pigeons, larks, finches, sparrows, etc., and the damage

they do to the crops, especially at seed time is incalculable”. The writer suggested that the problem could be effectively dealt with “by wholesale poison if it were not a criminal offence because of the harm to game birds”. The following week, a farmer, Mr Charles Adams, of Manor Farm, Aylesbury Road, wrote to the editor of the Herald: “Dear Sir, I was shocked to see the wholesale poisoning of birds advocated in your last week’s paper. If you will allow me space in your valuable paper, I will give facts, based on 40 years’ experience, as to what are bird pests and what are not. ...I express my entire satisfaction that poisoning birds is a criminal offence, so long as there are individuals still existing who would resort to such wanton cruelty. What would the landscape be without the beautiful bird life?”

Wendover Youth Forum Cash BoostWendover Youth Forum has collected a cheque for £1,000 from The Clare Foundation and Buckinghamshire New University as part of a crowdfunding social enterprise campaign to pay for healthy fruit dishes.

The forum, comprising Wendover Centre, in Wharf Road, Wendover, and Aylesbury Youth for Christ, raised £1,230 in 35 days in ‘Fruity-Call’, a project to pay for equipment and packaging to recycle unsold fruit from Budgens of Wendover, in the High Street, into nutritious, sweet alternative, dried fruit pieces.

The University, based in Queen Alexandra Road, High Wycombe, and The Clare Foundation, a charitable organisation based in Saunderton, near Princes Risborough, matched the funding up to £1,000 to pay for a fruit dehydrator, food handling training and packaging materials.

Becky Murgatroyd, Senior Youth Leader at Wendover Youth Centre, said: “This could be one of the most influential projects we have taken

part in. We are working with Budgens to take fruit they can no longer sell and turn it in to fruity bites to sell at youth clubs, schools and possibly in store for them. As part of our campaign we produced a video, set up our crowdfunding page, and also received some large donations from local business and charities.”

Becky and Martha Barnes of Wendover Youth Forum were joined by Joel Hughes,

who coordinates Business Development and Partnerships for crowdfunder.co.uk, to collect the cheque from Martin Thornton of The Clare Foundation and Professor Tim Middleton, Pro Vice-Chancellor - Research and Enterprise at Bucks New University.

Prof Middleton said: “We are pleased to support Wendover Youth Forum. Social enterprise is something that students are passionate about and learning about new ways of supporting enterprising activity through crowdfunding and other sources of finance are part of the entrepreneurial skill-set our courses help to develop.”

Mr Thornton helped Wendover Youth Centre run the crowdfunding campaign. He added: “We welcome any other organisations taking part. If you would like us to help you realise your crowdfunding dreams or just want to know how to take part in round two of the competition, as there are still nine cheques of £1,000 to be awarded, please email me at [email protected].”

Recycled Art ExhibitionJohn Colet students were thrilled to host a public art exhibition at Queens Park Centre in Aylesbury in January.

Year 12 and 13 students studying for a BTEC Art qualification followed a brief to create a piece of art based on recycling. The art on display was remarkably varied and included a model person made from old wires, an eagle made primarily from a selection of old gloves and a wire fox on a carved wooden base.

Art teacher Sally Bulteel said: “Seeing all the students work on display was wonderful, I am incredibly proud of this group who all work extremely hard and continually support and encourage one another. This is the first time the John Colet has run an Art and Design BTEC, and it is proving to be a great subject choice.”

The students exhibiting were Josie Mullins, Sally Sharp, Rebecca Walford, Elle Riche, Hannah Mizen-Carney, Lily Moore, Sean Battista and Tia Daley.

Amazing Donkey Youth ClubAmazing Donkey, a club for school years 6-8 that meets at the Wendover Youth Centre on Friday nights, celebrated its 10th anniversary at the end of January. As part of the celebration, the Club would like to invite all its volunteers, past or present, to come along to the Youth Centre on Saturday 19 March. For further details, contact Paul on 07771 515838.

Founded by Paul Hammett and Paul Gardner, the youth club was set up to provide a safe place where young people could meet with their friends and just be themselves…within boundaries! The Club couldn’t have operated without so many people willing to give up time on Friday nights to support it. Thank you!

The Club offers a range of activities. Many have been provided for no additional cost due to the financial support of such local agencies as Lionel Abel-Smith Trust, Wendover Parish Council, Youth Bank, Heart of Bucks Foundation (formerly Bucks Community Foundation), AVDC Community Chest. Here’s to the next 10 years!

Looking forward to better weatherYour favourite local Tapas bar is changing its windows in late February-early March but will remain open throughout the transformation. The huge floor to ceiling windows at Tres Corazones in Pound Street will be replaced with folding doors so that once the weather warms up there will be open access, Mediterranean style.

Training for Small BusinessesWendover Chamber of Trade and Commerce held its first training workshop in January: Social Media marketing tips for Small Businesses. The workshop lead, Rick Wallington of iDigitalDream, made sure that everyone came away having learnt something, no matter what their level of experience with social media, and all of the delegates gave very positive feedback.

WCTC will be running more workshops in the coming year, with reduced rates for members. If you want further information

The King & QueenLife-long Wendover residents, Pete Donne and Shelley Burns are the new tenants at The King and Queen. They took over on Monday 1 February and are busy putting in place their new ideas for this much loved pub. Pete says: “Whilst retaining the character of what is a quintessential community pub, we will be putting our own stamp on it. In particular, a lively and eclectic events calendar, informed, not only, by my previous career in the music industry, but also our love of Wendover and its environs. There will be full re-launch in early March, including a new drinks and food offer, too. In the meantime we’re open for business and we’d love everyone to come in and see us and chat about what we have in mind (and have a drink of course). Follow our progress on Facebook: www.facebook.com/kingandqueenwendover. We’re keen to recruit locally for the kitchen. Interested? Come in and see us at the pub, or email [email protected] for more details.” See ad page 9.

HS2The HS2 Additional Provisions 5 relating to Wendover were heard on Tuesday 2 February. As expected a much harder stance was taken on locus Standi qualification and it fell to a few organisations to represent the views of Wendover. As expected the select committee were a little bit fractious – clearly wanting to get through it quickly without having a rerun of previous appearances. This is hardly surprising since they have been listening to petitions for almost 2 years. While all the points were made by the petitioners it was difficult to know how much the Select Committee had taken on board. So we again have to wait and see.

It is said that the House of Commons Select committee will finish their work this month and publish their findings on Monday 22 February. From there I believe HS2 Ltd will respond and it then goes back to the House of Commons for the third reading of the Hybrid Bill before proceeding to the House of Lords. Another opportunity to petition!

By the time you read this the Select Committee will have published their report and it will show what mitigation we have achieved for Wendover. Whatever the outcome I have to say that I think the people of Wendover who petitioned against the Hybrid Bill have done a fantastic job. And I take my hat off to those who made the journey to appear before the Select Committee and made their case. A daunting task which took courage and perseverance. With the odious HS2 QC trying to make sure nothing stuck being an added complication. There can be little doubt they heard the views of Wendover. I suspect the outcome has more to do with the tight purse strings of George Osborne and what he told the Select Committee than the eloquence of the Wendover advocates.

Community OrchardWendover Community Orchard, clearly visible from the Heron Path, off Chapel Lane, was planted in December 2014. During January 2016 the trees were individually examined. Five had failed and were replaced, feed was given where required and stakes and shields were adjusted as necessary.

Two of the replacement trees were donated by Mrs Sue Hetherington. The trees will continue to be monitored during the coming year.

A pictorial notice/information board created by local artist Wendy Lewis has been commissioned by the Parish Council and will soon be installed at the bottom entrance to the orchard, near the stream.

Visitors will have noticed an open area creating a semi circular space at the lower middle end of the orchard, this is planned to be set with log seats so that the area can be used as an outdoor classroom. The wild flowers have been left in situ and should continue to give their display.

Each tree should soon be given its separate identification and description on a ground level label and the Parish Council hopes that over the coming years the orchard will become a valued asset to the Wendover Community.

We are all looking forward to the Spring blossom and in future years some Summer shade and Autumn fruit.

Life-saving Defib in St Mary’s WendoverThe British Heart Foundation have agreed to give a defibrillator to St Mary’s to give cardiac arrest victims a fighting chance of survival.

St. Mary’s Church is to become the fourth site in Wendover to have a defibrillator. In addition, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) has provided a Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training kit. The church is extremely grateful to have received these lifesaving items following their successful application for a “Nation of Lifesavers Community Package” from the charity. The innovative Community Package contains everything needed in order to learn CPR in half an hour. St. Mary’s Church and U3A, who make extensive use of the church, plan to run training sessions in the local community meaning that anyone can become a potential lifesaver.

The first training session is on Thursday 25 February at 19:00 in St Mary’s Church. The following session will be on Monday 21 March at 14:00.

Selling a home can be a confusing business these days. There are more options than ever with the choice of using a High Street agent or one of the new online agencies or a mix of the two. There is the choice of paying a smaller fee upfront or paying a higher agency fee on completion. Sole agency ? Multi agency ? It can be something of a maze.

What is certain though is that it is best to have a local, experienced property expert on your side when selling. Wendover resident David Cadogan is the Area Partner and face of Bonners and Babingtons Estate Agents.

Rather than using a traditional Estate Agency with an office and a team of people to deal with, David’s vendors prefer the Bonners and Babingtons’ method because of the fantastic personal service offered. He is on hand every step of the way from taking the

photographs, uploading high quality property brochures to the major property portals - Rightmove and Zoopla - conducting all of the viewings personally, negotiating keenly on the sale price and dealing with everything right through to completion. The only local Estate Agent to offer a one-to-one service – the only one open for viewings on a Sunday too.

Importantly, Bonners and Babingtons do not have the overheads of a High Street office so the savings can be passed directly on to you.

If you are considering putting your property onto the market and want to make an informed decision about which way suits you best, please call David on 01296 620676.

Hale RoadTim Russ & Company are proud to be entrusted with the sale of the Ridgeway Place development of luxurious apartments on behalf of Ortus Homes, the first of which are due to be ready to occupy at the end of this year.

The development comprises 21 luxury retirement apartments, five in the original Grade II Listed building, formerly the Vicarage, and a further sixteen apartments of new build to the side, replacing the nursing home.

The properties will be released for sale later in the spring and at this stage no prices or plans are available but it is important to register your interest with Tim Russ and Company at an early stage.

The apartments will be fitted to an extremely high specification and will mostly have two double bedrooms, bathroom and en-suite shower room, sitting room, kitchen / diner

and utility room. Ground floor apartments will have patios and many others will have balconies. There will be some larger apartments with one extra room – either a bedroom or a study. There is also a one bedroom apartment in the old building.

The grounds of the development extend to approximately 1.7 acres and will be attractively landscaped and will include residents and visitor car parking spaces. There will be direct

access from the site over the brook at the rear leading to the Heron Path accessing the village centre one way and the Church in the other direction.

For further information please contact Tony Defriez on 01296 621177 or by email at [email protected].

A well loved Wendover High Street building has undergone some routine maintenance and emerged looking very handsome.

Number One High Street, next to the entrance to Heron Path, is thought to be the oldest secular building in Wendover. During previous rennovations small examples of medieval wall paintings were found in accordance with its supposed age.

On this occasion the roof was being attended to. As a Grade II listed building in a Conservation Area, it was important for the owners to use the correct materials. In conjunction with the AVDC Listed Buildings Officer, clay tiles made in the traditional manner were chosen to an approved colour.

Many of the old roof tiles dated from the early 1900s and a few had started to slip. Stripping them off gave the opportunity to improve the insulation. The work was undertaken in January and February so as

not to indispose shoppers in the December Christmas rush.

Since 1985, the building has been owned by Christopher Pallet, believed to be the longest established privately owned business in Wendover. A few years ago the wall on Heron Path was repaired and locals were surprised to see that it was given a lime wash but this is the traditional cover for such a wall as it flexible and allows moisture to escape.

Number One High Street was mentioned in the January 2015 print edition of Wendover News on page 8 as Wendover Remembered the demise of Mr F How, Special Constable, http://www.wendovernews.co.uk/print-editions. He ran a butcher’s shop and his successors continued the business into the 1930s. Later it became an ironmonger’s hardware store and is now a gift shop. Does anyone have any memories or photos of this well known building and its uses over the years?

Feel Richer and Healthier....!Volunteering, eh? What a drag! Who would want to do that? Well, you, for a start. That is, if you fancy improving your health, increasing your happiness, developing new skills and making yourself feel wealthier and time-rich – all things that serious studies have found are associated with volunteering.

Volunteering is a vital part of society today, and nowhere more than in Wendover. Without volunteers, many things – from the library to children’s football -- would not exist. Wendover Pool would be shut if it weren’t for volunteers, so it’s just as well that even academics say volunteering is really good for you:

• Volunteers feel like they have more time.• Looks great on a CV.• Volunteers have lower mortality rates.• Volunteering increases self-confidence and

combats depression by reducing social isolation.• Being part of a community and making it

better place to live makes you a fantastic role model for your children and grand-children.

• Volunteering improves your community and helps make friends.

• Volunteers feel happier – and richer. One study showed volunteering once a week makes you feel as good as if you had tripled your salary.

As it happens, Wendover Pool is happy to help you all live better and longer with a whole range of volunteering opportunities. The Wendover Swimming Pool has remained open, thanks to a hardy but small group of lifeguards, first aiders, administrators, pool plant operators and general helpers. We now have the prospect of a full takeover of the pool firmly in sight, but without more helpers the operation will be unsustainable.

It would be a real shame for the pool to have to shut despite the massive success we have achieved over the past few years in attracting swimmers and hirers. Please volunteer!www.wendoverswimmingpool .co.uk/volunteer

Mid Bucks Beekeepers AssociationThis month sees the honeybee colonies starting to expand after what has been a relatively mild winter. The classroom element of our New Beekeepers Course draws to a close in March, with the practical sessions starting in May. At our 16 March meeting, Julian Parker will be giving a talk titled “Asian Hornet – A Beekeeping Armageddon”. Full details of these and other events can be found at www.mbbka.org.uk.

Seabrook (07767 148119) respectively. At their recent AGM, Secretary Rob Clifford stood down after 11 years in the post and Simon Thornton was elected in his place.

Bucks Bird Club The next indoor meeting is at Wendover Memorial Hall on Thursday 3 March, when Mike Wallen will be talking about 2 of his passions – the Aylesbury peregrines and the Island of Skomer. Doors open at 7.15 and the talk starts at 7.45 p.m. Non-members welcome and entry is £2. Visit www.bucksbirdclub.co.uk for more information about club activities.

Wendover Carers Support GroupDo you have some time to spare to help at Carers Bucks Support Group? The Wendover support group is well attended by carers and is looking for locally based volunteers to help. The group meets on the second Thursday of each month from 1-3pm at Wendover Library. If possible, we would like you to arrive a little before each session at 12.45pm to liaise with Support Group Staff Member Voni Nyamazana. If you are interested and would like to help, please contact our Volunteer Co-ordinator Julia Durrant at [email protected] or call 0300 777 2722.

Wendover ToddlersIt is with heavy hearts that we have had to make the decision to close Wendover Toddlers after almost 45 years. Unfortunately this is due to a lack of volunteers on the committee as the current committee will soon need to step down. Also, with upcoming changes to the hall, it may become an unsuitable venue.

Our last session will be on Monday 21 March and we are planning do something special to mark the end of a very special era. Please get in touch if you would like to attend so we have an idea of numbers, [email protected]. Any money we have will be donated to The Wendover Swimming Pool.

Wendover TwinningThe Twinning Association is looking for hosts for French visitors from 13-16 May. For more information, please contact Dawn Rance 01296 625718 / [email protected].

MP Reviews Graduation ParadeMr Mark Lancaster, MP, Parlimentary Under Secretary of State and Minister for Defence Personnel and Veterans, visited RAF Halton this week to act as the Reviewing Officer during the graduation of Douglas Intake and to learn more about the role of the Station.

After signing the Visitor’s Book he was escorted by the Station Commander, Group Captain Adrian Burns, to the Recruit Training Squadron and Initial Force Protection Flight where he met the staff and was briefed on their respective roles.

After lunch, Mr Lancaster reviewed the parade, met with the recruits and their familes and made a short visit to the Trenchard Museum.

Busy Time for RAF Halton ConservationDave Short from RAF Halton’s Mechanical Transport Section has been busy again with conservation on the Station.

With his team of assistants he has sited 40 nesting boxes around the Station in February, with another 35 to 40 boxes yet to be put up.

Dave said: “Once these have been put up I will approach the Station Warrant Officer with a view to getting help from some recruits to assist with the siting of over 100 dormice tubes, another protected species that we have. These tubes will then give us a greater idea as to where we then site dormice boxes.” He continued: “Newcomers to the Conservation Committee are Sgt Russ Barber (MPGS) and Emily Haddock who previously worked in the Station Safety Health and Environment office here at Halton, who are both training to be British Trust Ornithologist bird ringers. I am also currently training Ann Collier, Deputy SSHE, to be a Great Crested Newt surveyor.”

Water Vole SurveyThe Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust recently published the results of a survey of water voles in the area. Unfortunately, the Wendover Canal has been a good example of how mink can decimate a water vole population. In 2001 the canal was estimated to support a healthy population of over 120 voles. Water voles suffered mink predation over that winter and the following year only one water vole was recorded on the canal. Further surveys conducted in 2006 and 2008 failed to record any, and it wasn’t until 2012 that one vole was recorded back on the canal. 3.5km of the canal were surveyed in 2015, but unfortunately no signs were found.

BBOWT have been working to establish mink control on the canal and encourage readers to report suspected water vole sightings to them via their website www.bbowt.org.uk. It would appear that water voles might be hanging on in low numbers on the canal or on a nearby waterbody.

It can be difficult to distinguish between water voles and brown rats. Further details can be found at www.wildlifetrusts.org/species/water-vole. BBOWT aim to follow up any suspected sightings with a survey to confirm the presence of water voles.

Chilterns Heritage Group LaunchThe Chiltern Society is establishing a Chilterns Heritage Group at a launch event at the historic Chenies Manor on 9 April, and is inviting members of the public to attend.

Jeffrey Newman, Chairman of the new group, said: “We are keen to take on projects and launch initiatives aimed at protecting the history and heritage of the Chilterns, and to work with other groups where necessary. We are already identifying the sort of projects that could be included, which we will explain in a little more detail at the launch.”

Places at the Chenies Manor event are limited, but if you would like to attend please contact the Chiltern Society office on 01494 771250 or book online at www.chilternsociety.org.uk.

Hampden FieldsA new planning application has been submitted to AVDC to build 3,000 new homes on the Hampden Fields site between Bedgrove and Weston Turville. The documents are available on AVDC’s planning portal at www.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk and I’ve put the developer’s summary on my site www.davidlidington.com.

Last time, the application was rejected by the Secretary of State because of its impact on traffic in and around Aylesbury, and in particular on the Walton gyratory system. My own objections then were based partly on that concern and partly on the risk of coalescence - that the scheme would in practice lead to Weston Turville being absorbed into Aylesbury.

The new proposal is an improvement. It includes a wider green corridor between the new houses and Weston Turville village and a link road between the A413 and the A41. The developers have told me that their traffic modelling predicts reduced pressure on roads through both Weston Turville and Bedgrove.

I want to look at the detail. And I hope Wendover takes an interest too, as the impact on local roads of a development this size

affects the interests of people in the village. Objections and expressions of support need to go to AVDC Planning department.

HS2I made my third and final appearance before the Select Committee in January. My previous presentation had focused on tunnel options, so while I reiterated those points briefly I used this hearing to make representations on other matters that I’d not brought to the Committee before.

In terms of Wendover, I spoke about St Mary’s Church, Wendover Manor School and the Cricket Club. I also highlighted the particular needs of residents in outlying areas of the parish: Wendover Dean, London Road and Nash Lee.

Since then, I have followed up these and other points with the Committee, HS2 Ltd and Transport Ministers. We should hear relatively soon what the Committee recommends. Later this year, the whole process of petitioning and Committee hearings will begin again – this time in the House of Lords.

CompensationI sent the Select Committee a list of constituency cases where residents had

evidence of valuations by agents appointed under the HS2 compensation scheme coming in significantly below market valuations by local agents. The Committee Chairman agreed to look at such evidence from me and other MPs to see whether there is indeed a systemic problem with HS2’s valuations.

The better news is that since I last wrote here I’ve been able to help and support more local residents in securing compensation. As I’ve said before, it’s important to frame applications to show how the circumstances of an individual case fit the published criteria of the compensation scheme being applied for and to demonstrate that blight from HS2 has made it impossible to continue with a prepared life-plan.

Visit to Chiltern Way Federation Wendover Campus SchoolI spoke to the GCSE Citizenship students. I was impressed. They’d worked hard to prepare good questions. I can see why the school is rated “outstanding” by OFSTED.

Ian lives in Wendover Dean, with his wife Kyla and two children Adam (10) and Emma (8).

Ian’s background is really quite varied; some might say chequered, he jokes. He is originally from the West Country and was born and bred in Bath, before moving north to study a business degree at Lancaster University. He then lived and worked in London, at first for an accounting firm (where he met Kyla) and then for a number of investment banks, spending twelve years with the American firm Goldman Sachs. Immediately before moving to Wendover, Ian and Kyla were lucky enough to live in New York for three years. “We had a fantastic time in New York,” says Ian, “but when we came back to the UK, we felt that we had ‘done’ cities and we were really keen to find a friendlier, more rural community to live in. Wendover was the perfect find – and we have loved the last twelve years here.”

Although Ian continued to work in the city for a while after coming to Wendover, he made a significant career change in 2011, moving to the Aylesbury-based cerebral palsy charity PACE to be their Director of Finance & Resources. “I had been hoping to work for a charity for some time,” says Ian. “I had been a trustee at PACE for a couple of years and had the opportunity to become a full-time member of the team, helping PACE

to grow and develop while learning a huge amount personally about the charity sector”. At PACE, Ian led the development of their new Early Years Centre on the Wendover Road and helped to set up the campaign consortium Action Cerebral Palsy. “PACE is a fantastic local charity and a leader in its field, nationally and internationally,” says Ian, “It was great to have been able to be a part of an organisation that genuinely transforms the lives of so many children with complex disabilities and I would recommend everyone to support PACE if they can.”

After three years at PACE, and eager for a new challenge, Ian joined the international Christian charity Oasis at the beginning of 2015, as their Director of Strategy. Oasis works with and within 51 vulnerable communities across 11 countries around the world, providing a ground-breaking model of integrated local service delivery, focused around an innovative and very inclusive model of church. In the UK, Oasis is the second largest multi-academy trust, with 47 schools in deprived inner-city communities, serving over 25,000 students

and their families. But most importantly, those 47 schools sit within 35 Oasis community hubs which serve the local neighbourhood through the provision of youth work, adult education, family support, food banks, debt advice and a great deal more. Ian’s role spans strategy, fundraising and communications and he is currently planning the launch of Oasis’ new venture, a research and policy vehicle called the Oasis Foundation. “Oasis’ model is so innovative and so effective, and the statutory alternatives are under so much pressure nationally, that we want to share generously our learning from the last thirty years,” says Ian. “The Oasis Foundation is our way of giving that learning back to society so that others can replicate what Oasis has achieved”.

Ian’s role at Oasis also fits with his life outside work, given that the Sansburys are all active members of St Mary’s Church in Wendover. Ian co-leads one of St Mary’s new all age services called Explore (the next one is on Mothering Sunday, March 6th, at 10.30 am), he sits on the PCC and chairs the Global Church group (through which St Mary’s provides support to other churches and charities around the world). Other than that, Ian is a keen singer, both with the St Mary’s music group and with Wendover Choral Society, an enthusiastic but not particularly capable cricketer and a fanatical Bath rugby fan.

Farewell to CharlotteThere comes a moment in the working lives of many of us when we need a broader canvas, a new challenge. Such a moment has arrived for our Parish Clerk, Charlotte. She will be leaving us in a few weeks’ time.

The role of the Parish Clerk is central to enabling the Council to work as a co-ordinated team, Charlotte certainly did this with patience, good nature and no small amount of humour. Her understanding of the complexities of local government was invaluable and contributed much to the smooth working of the Parish Council. She built strong working relationships with other councils and organisations and her work on HS2 and the Manor Waste has been outstanding.

Charlotte is very generous with her time and whether you are a Councillor or a member of the public visiting the Clock Tower, she always makes you welcome and listens to what you have to say. It is a rare occasion when she cannot help.

We are truly sorry to see her leave Wendover and will miss her cheery demeanour and her steadying hand. Our very best wishes for the future go with her.

Manor Waste Project UpdateThe contractors Richard Ashford, are progressing well and the twelve week programme should be completed by the end of April. Details of the scheme are at the Clock Tower or online, www.wendover-pc.gov.uk/?p=4079. There has been some concern about the removal of the trees. The reason is the likelihood that in future the roots would lift the surface. A network of services, cables and pipes run underneath the site, many already compromised by tree roots. There will be plants around the War Memorial seating area and trees in large containers around the site. If you’d like to see the containers being considered, go to the website.

We are very grateful for the flexibility of our market traders and appreciate the support residents are giving them during the works. When completed, the surface will be more level and easier to walk on, and better withstand market traffic. There will be power and water supply points, new seating and cycle racks. The shops along the front are also impacted and have shown a high level of support for the project: they are as excited as we are to see the end result.

Time CapsuleAs an item of interest for future generations when the Manor Waste is next excavated we have decided to bury a Time Capsule containing items of interest and curiosity. The PC would like to have any ‘polite’!! suggestions you may have about what should be included.

New CouncillorsSadly two Councillors have resigned for personal reasons, leaving us with vacancies on the Council. No formal qualifications are necessary but an interest in the future of Wendover and a willingness to get involved are crucial. If you feel you can make a contribution and are interested in joining WPC, please contact the Clock Tower.

Neighbourhood Plan The Parish Council has agreed to set up a working group to be made up of community representatives to develop a Neighbourhood Plan for Wendover. This initiative will be launched at the Annual Parish Meeting in May. It is hoped that representatives from all sections of the Wendover community will volunteer to serve on this group. Information on neighbourhood plans may be found on the AVDC website.
