Farewell RayWendover was shocked and sad to hear of the untimely death of Ray Smith on Wednesday 1 April. Many people have expressed their condolences to the family. Ray’s father ran the business before him but Ray Smith Motor Services Ltd in South Street has been a backbone of Wendover for many years. Carl and Mac are continuing to service and repair cars but the petrol station has closed, as planned by Ray. His sons are writing a tribute which will appear in the June edition of Wendover News.

Lloyds BankLloyds Bank intends to reduce the opening hours of the Wendover branch to just two days a week, 10am to 3pm, starting 1 June.

Representatives of Wendover Chamber of Trade and Commerce, the Wendover Society and the Parish Council met with the Lloyds Bank regional director to express the disbelief and dismay with which local businesses and residents have greeted the news.

The transaction data which the bank has used in making this decision does not take all factors into account so it is important for any complainant to give real and relevant examples. The initial letter from Lloyds Bank urged customers to contact the manager Lorraine Reeves in response. Any such letter can be delivered to the branch. An online petition can be found at bit.ly/1yv38mx and printed petitions can be found around central Wendover in places such as the Library, Budgens and Number One.

Wendover is a thriving business community which uses and needs the full panoply of services offered by a local bank in order to continue to succeed. Residents of Wendover are disproportionately likely not to have access to online banking but also have mobility issues and therefore need our last remaining high street bank.

Remember, you don’t have to bank at Lloyds to be affected. You are entitled to

write or petition.

Further progress on the Wendover ArmAt 11am on Saturday 11 April, volunteers from the Wendover Arm Trust broke through one of the temporary bunds and commenced re-watering of 437 metres (just over one quarter mile) of canal up to Bridge 4A (one of the wooden footbridges erected to allow walkers to cross the canal using the established footpath).

This further restored length has taken about five years to complete and will require about 3.15 million litres of water to bring the level up to nearly 1 metre – still not to navigable depth, but this section will not be connected to the fully completed Phase 1 for a number of years – depending upon funding and available labour. It is estimated that it will take about two weeks to fill this length. It is hoped that wildlife will quickly establish as found with previously restored lengths.

Despite the fact that the Trust was unable to previously announce re-watering to the general public owing to parking and other restraints, a considerable number of interested parties were present having heard of the development by word of mouth. The Trust will be holding a Restoration Open Day on Sunday 7 June when this new restored section will be open to all with guided tours available.

The Trust is now commencing restoration between Bridges 4 and 4A and progress could be speeded up by employing contractors for part of the work if additional funds can be obtained – in this connection a Funding Director is anxiously sought and if any reader of “Wendover News” is interested in this position they would be delighted to hear. Contact may be made via the website, www.wendoverarmtrust.co.uk.

Wendover Community Car awarded Government Funding A local charity, Wendover Action Group, have successfully bid for government funding to provide a new replacement vehicle for the Wendover Community Car.

In November 2014 the Dept. of Transport announced that they would provide £25 million of funding for existing not for profit community transport schemes to purchase new vehicles. The Wendover Action Group were notified on Thursday 26 March that they were one of the successful applicants.

The Chairman of the charity said “We are especially pleased about the funding as the current vehicle has been providing a service to the village for almost nine years and funding replacement is a challenge. Local organisations like the Parish Council and the Lionel Abel-Smith Trust have been able to help us with running costs but significantly greater resources were needed to replace the specially equipped vehicle we operate. The continued operation of our service is now more secure.”

Au Revoir, Wendover! The Pollards, 39 Chiltern Road, are planning to move to Switzerland in June. Details about and advert for their open house on pages 4-5.

For some years they have been glad to collect empty toner cartridges and unwanted mobile phones for recycling, to benefit the Air Ambulance Service. They will send off their last consignment on 1 May. Please do not leave any items (including sheets) for recycling after that date. Thank you for your support over the years.

MAY 1915In May 1915 fighting continued in Gallipoli, but little progress was made. On the Western Front British troops attacked at Aubers Ridge (9 May) and at Festubert (15 May) in support of the French offensive in Artois. In those two attacks the British, including Indian and Canadian soldiers, suffered a total of 28,000 casualties and little ground was gained. At sea, the Cunard liner Lusitania en route from New York to Liverpool was torpedoed without warning and sank in 18 minutes (7 May). 1,195 passengers were lost including 124 Americans. Zeppelins raided Southend and London where 38 people were killed and 35 injured.

It was during the attack at Aubers Ridge that 2nd Lieutenant R. T. Shaw of the 2nd Battalion the Royal Sussex Regiment was killed. Reginald Shaw, aged 22, was the son of Dr and Mrs Lauriston Shaw of Icknield Cottage, Ellesborough Road, Wendover. The Wendover Magazine recorded that Lt Shaw was killed “when he was gallantly leading his platoon across the open in the face of heavy fire...somewhere in the bullet-swept space Lt Shaw made the crowning sacrifice for his country”. Lt Shaw is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial in northern France.

The Bucks advertiser of 29 May reported that Lieutenant John Eldridge of the Royal West Kent Regiment had been wounded. John Eldridge was the son of Francis Eldridge, a bricklayer, and his wife, Ellen. John had been a pupil at Wendover School and before the war lived with his parents in Aylesbury Road. He survived the war and in 1918 married a Miss Somerville – “a well–known and respected Wendover lady” in Portsmouth.

A second Wendover man wounded in May 1915 was William (Will) Herbert Dell, a Private in the 1st Battalion Ox and Bucks Light Infantry. Will was the middle son of William and Martha

Dell of Wellwick Farm. Will spent a considerable time in hospital, but survived the war.

The Bucks Advertiser of 8 May announced that: “We know that an anonymous donor has kindly offered to erect a YMCA hut [in Wendover] for the use of soldiers. We trust that a suitable site will be obtained. In the offer provision has been made for a caretaker.” Wendover was continuing its efforts to make the Halton soldiers feel welcome.

HS2 and Buckinghamshire’s PastHS2 will carve its way not only through the ancient Chiltern landscape but also a substantial number of historic sites in Buckinghamshire both above and below ground. Since the announcement of the line’s proposed construction, the Buckinghamshire Archaeological Society has been active in raising heritage issues with HS2 Ltd and increasing public awareness of its impact. Recently, the Society arranged an open day to view the remains of the church and graveyard of old Stoke Mandeville, which would be completely obliterated by construction of the line.

The Society has arranged a whole-day event with ten speakers looking at a number of threatened locations, ranging from ancient deposits where hippopotamus bones have previously been discovered, to a Roman small town and parts of two deserted medieval village sites. Heritage on the Line will be at Weston Turville Village Hall on Saturday 16 May. See www.bucksas.org.uk for further details and tickets - entry by ticket only.

Select CommitteeThe Select Committee has set out some advice for Petitioners: be concise, not taking more than 30 minutes in your presentation and keeping your slide show relatively short (24 slides are recommended). They would like petitioners to come together.

We now have three provisional dates for the Select Committee visit to Buckinghamshire:• 20 May, Cheryl Gillan MP for Amersham

CFAs 8 and 9• 21 May, David Lidington MP for Aylesbury

CFAs 10 and 11• 23 May, John Bercow MP for Buckingham

CFAs 12,13 and 14Clearly this assumes it is the MPs who have been voted in at the general election. But let’s explore why the dates are provisional. If it is a “hung Parliament” and it takes time to form a functioning government, it is only after that that the Select Committee will be re constituted and empowered to continue. In simple terms: No government, No Select Committee.

Brian Thompson on a Bored TunnelI mentioned last month that we were awaiting the publication of the Chiltern Long Tunnel. It is now available on the Chiltern District Council web site, and it has several interesting aspects for us.

The Chiltern Long Tunnel has a northern portal at chainage 55.800 about level with the middle roundabout of the bypass. This moving of the portal away from Wendover is good for us. Now a fully bored tunnel through the Chilterns AONB solves most of our issues with HS2 (except the waste of public funds) with one exception. That is the construction site.

Now having spoken to a few HS2 Ltd personnel in my time I have come to the conclusion that they employ irony in a most extreme fashion. By that I mean they have assured me they are not giving us a tunnel to save us from a huge tunnel construction site being right on our doorstep. Now it is clear that a fully bored

tunnel requires a large construction site but a lot less than the sum of all the construction sites the surface route requires in the AONB. So how bad would it be?

The promoters of the Chiltern Long Tunnel have identified using the railways to bring in supplies for HS2 and take out spoil as their main approach. An alternative was to pipe the spoil away. In addition they are proposing to follow the Crossrail example and bring in the concrete rings for the tunnel by rail rather than construct them on site. See the map next page for details.

The green area is the space released from the current HS2 proposed approach, which shows how the construction site moves away from the residents. The blue area shows the identified HS2 space being used as construction areas. The red area is a new requirement and is predominantly for railway sidings. All in all not too bad bearing in mind it could be there for 7 years with the workforce working 24x7.

The one little wrinkle we have is that the sidings shown are mostly in the parish of Stoke Mandeville and they do seem rather put out that we could get a bored tunnel. Still, let’s hope common sense prevails as the corner of the railway sidings are still 1km away from the corner of Stoke Mandeville village.

Steve is one of your District Councillors seeking re-election. He has attended Parish Council meetings and Local Area forums. He also sits on the Wendover Memorial Hall Committee. He has assisted residents with various issues and concerns and is working with the Parish Council in the preparation of their Neighbourhood Plan and liaising with AVDC to resolve Wendover’s parking issues. He has actively fought against HS2 since its announcement and made representations to the Secretary of State, Prime Minister and HS2 Chairman to convey your concerns. Steve welcomes the opportunity to continue as your District Councillor, working for the community, raising your concerns and influencing the way services are delivered and your money spent.

Why UKIP? In the past we have had too many broken promises, a cast iron referendum,a human rights bill, control of our borders, all pie in the sky. Idiot ideas like HS2, freezing energy bills, cutting our defences, the list is never ending. What about Wendover? I live on the Princess Mary Estate, and apart from the roads still waiting to be made up and the street lighting to be sorted out I think it’s a lovely part of the world: Wendover Woods, the RAF being very generous with playing areas, all good stuff. If elected I will do my best to keep it that way.

Sue Hetherington has lived in Wendover for over 20 years, having moved here from High Wycombe. She worked full time for over 40 years, spending 30 years in IT, latterly at the Bank of England. She did a variety of jobs for the last 10 or so years of her career, including adult literacy teaching in prisons and statistical work at Magistrates Courts. Since retirement, Sue does much local community voluntary work. It is a particular pleasure when it touches upon Sue’s passions of wildlife and the environment. Sue looks forward to using her skills and life experience serving her community.

Aylesbury Vale Green Party is standing 3 candidates in the AVDC elections in Wendover. We are the only party that has opposed HS2 in Parliament since 2010, whatever UKIP say. We will enforce the Hunting Act in Aylesbury Vale and halt the rollout of the failed badger cull. Green Party candidates will support local businesses, oppose fracking and work hard to ensure that recreation facilities are properly maintained and that the mounting litter problem is tackled. A Green District Council will pay at least a living wage to those providing public services and work towards £10 an hour by 2020.

My name is Marc, (36) I lived in Halton after joining the RAF Police in 1998. After leaving the RAF I continued to live in Buckinghamshire and the surrounding counties. I moved back to Halton Village three years ago and find that the area has become my home. I am engaged to be married in June this year. I work for a manufacturer in Little Kimble. In my spare time I follow rock music and movies but also take time for my allotment. I have plenty of time outside this to support my community and friends and I believe that standing for UKIP is the best way I can do this.

A keen hiker in the Chiltern Hills, Andrew Southam is standing as a Conservative Party District Councillor to contribute to community life, represent local views, and protect local interests. Among other activities, particular agenda issues he wants to pursue include developing a walk through Wendover and Halton on aspects of historical and natural interest to promote local tourism; deepening the proud links that Wendover and Halton have with the RAF community; developing outdoor youth facilities, particularly promoting the Halton Air Training Corps and working with other organisations to develop the local environment including the repair of country pathways.

• The Green Party is a party of social and environmental justice.• We believe in “The Common Good” - a politics that works for the benefit of all.• We are the only party that puts the environment at the heart of our policies.• Green Party have consistently voted against HS2 in Parliament. • HS2 is an energy-intensive, over-engineered railway which will cause massive damage and disruption to

Aylesbury Vale.• Nationally, we will argue to bring the railways back into public ownership.

Councillor Peter Strachan is standing again having been elected as an AVDC Conservative Councillor at the last election. A former Wing Commander, Peter took early retirement from the RAF 10 years ago. He and his family have lived in the area since 1995, when he first served at RAF Halton. Peter has always taken an active interest in the local community and believes that local politics is about local people shaping their own community. If elected again, he pledges to continue to do his best representing the community he lives and works within. As a local Councillor, Peter promises to put the constituents of Wendover and Halton first at AVDC.

Chris has been resident in Wendover for over 40 years and his main concerns have been environmental, both with regard to Wendover issues and nationally. He has been a member of the Green party for the last two years. Locally he has tried hard to raise the profile of cycling, since he is convinced that if more Wendover residents cycled instead of using their cars, Wendover would benefit both from a better environment and a general improvement in health. He supports the Green party since it gives prominence to major environmental issues such as global warming and he supports his party in their opposition to HS2.

I lived in Aston Clinton before moving to Weston Turville six years ago with my wife Joan, and I have been involved in the local community for over 30 years. Before retiring I worked for the British Heart Foundation whilst also being actively involved in village life. I have had the privilege of representing the Aston Clinton ward for 16 years. Today our villages are facing more threats than at any time in the past. HS2 will have a devastating impact, as will opportunistic housing development which makes no improvement to local services. Our schools are full, waiting times for a GP appointment are increasing, our roads are already congested. I will continue to fight HS2 but strive to get the best mitigation should it come. I will continue to get the Local Plan in place quickly to stop all these unwanted planning applications.

The Dandy Kid Knit ClubThe Dandy Kid is a place for modern parents. There is a small shop in Wendover where they not only sell clothes and nice bits for the kids, they also stock some bits for grown ups too. The Dandy Kid is much more than a shop, they’re all about making life easier and more fun for parents - mums especially - so they also have a Knit Club.

The Dandy Kid Knit Club started in September 2014. Becks Clarke (Founder of The Dandy Kid) and Hannah Dominey (aka The Knitting

Midwife who, as well as knitting, runs baby massage classes in the village) began their own informal knit club a few years ago with a small group of friends. Chatting to lots of customers in the shop it became apparent that lots of women were looking for an “outlet”. It also seemed that more people wanted to learn to knit and have a few hours away from the kids, so demand meant that they decided to scale up and open an official club.

The Dandy Kid Knit Club is open to everyone with all knitting abilities. Becks said, “We’ve both always loved knitting and crafting, it’s good for the soul and incredibly therapeutic. Parenthood is an incredibly busy time, it’s not often you find or make time for yourself. Knitting is a craft that you can pick up and put down so we just wanted to create a space and time to do just this. We love teaching people to knit, and chatting with those who can already, it’s a lovely relaxed evening.”

The Dandy Kid Knit Club takes place on the last Tuesday of every month at Whitewaters

BoxcrazyCrafting to me is a release of every day problems, worries, stresses. If you allow it, it will give you a sense of calmness and all your worries will disappear for that short time. Whether it’s sewing, painting, paper crafts, knitting, cooking and so the list goes on - you will achieve the “zone” that everyone goes into at some time - that’s the moment all outside concerns disappear. So have a go at something, everything is achievable. There are no judges on performance or outcome. If it looks good to you then it is good! See advert page 5.

PlainStitchThe PlainStitch Workroom is a sunny colourful sewing shop and classroom located on the first floor of a Georgian building on Wendover High Street. We teach classes almost every day, Tuesday to Saturday, evenings and weekends. We teach complete beginners to sew, we reignite a love of sewing in rusty returnees and we inspire and challenge our dedicated seamstresses. We teach dressmaking, quilting and patchwork, knitting and crochet, cross stitch and embroidery. We also teach weekend and holiday sewing to kids and teens.

We make everything from quilts to lampshades, from dresses for babies to cushions for sofas and we do it all in our sunny classroom above Christopher Pallet Estate Agents in High St, Wendover. Our Workroom is tucked away on the first floor, you can find our entrance in Back Street, through the black gate, and in through the shiny blue front door with railings.

We sell a comprehensive range of cotton quilting fabrics, an ever growing selection of haberdashery, threads and notions as well

as a small selection of wool and knitting supplies. We pride ourselves on an inspiring, bright colourful shop, packed to the gunnels with IDEAS!

As well as our popular classes (details on our website www.plainstitch.co.uk) we also run a community sewing group, The Wendover Sewing Bee, which meets once a month at St Anne’s Hall on the first Tuesday 9.30am – 12pm, £4.00. This is a drop in event, just turn up with some sewing or knitting and meet lots of lovely like-minded people to share your project with. It really is the friendliest gathering!

My name is Deb McGuire and I run PlainStitch. I love to sew, and I love teaching other people to sew. We really believe that having a creative outlet makes everyone who tries it happier, and sewing really gives people that satisfaction and enjoyment, as well as the amazing community of the people who come to sew at PlainStitch. Do pop in and see what we are about. We are open Tues – Sat 9.30am – 1pm (many Saturdays we are also open till 3pm – see website for details or email [email protected])

Elegantly IcedElegantly Iced was born in 2008 with my beautiful daughter’s 1st birthday party and the creation of a cake for this special occasion. From this modest beginning I have built a thriving business creating wedding cakes, celebration cakes, hand crafted flowers and cake toppers all from my home in the beautiful town of Wendover.

Over the years I’ve discovered that there is

a desire for cakes with a mix of personality and great taste that you can’t get from even the best supermarkets. People love fresh flavours and individual design touches that make my job a real pleasure. I’ve met some wonderful people and love nothing more than turning a seed of an idea into a cake that really means the world to someone.

My cakes feature handcrafted sugar flowers and customised cake toppers which I make from scratch. The learning guides I have published to help others learn this amazing craft have been sent to people in Australia, South Africa and America. It never ceases to amaze me how many of you also want to learn how to decorate cakes too.

I’ve used my primary school teaching background to run my own cake decorating school. Cupcakes and sugar flowers and models are a growing trend and I was thrilled at the response I had for my small group workshops where I share my decorating techniques and create little works of edible

Cornelli SugarcraftDid you know sugarcraft originated in Britain in sugar sculptures created for court banquets in Tudor England? It is a tradition maintained today by anyone making and decorating a cake for a loved one or as a business.

So why is your sugarcraft shop called “Cornelli”? This is a simple, elegant piped filigree design - random, continuous curving lines that do not overlap or touch. It looks great on wedding cakes, hearts and butterfly wings. “Doodling” on cake!!

Now, allow us to let you in to a little secret.

With all the amazing moulds, tools, advice and support we offer - cake decorating is easier than you think - and is fun, fun, fun!!!!

There are 3 main “pastes” used by cake decorators. All are edible:Sugarpaste is flexible and easy to shape. Used to cover cakes, it can also be rolled, cut, sprayed, imprinted, embossed, painted, folded, ruffled, shaped and modelled. Modelling paste is sugarpaste with added gum tragacanth powder (hardening agent) to make it firmer and easier to model. It dries more quickly and is used to make novelty characters, animals etc.Flower paste is used to make anything which needs to dry quickly and hold structure - small decorative details such as flower

Why not leave us to manage your accountancy needs so you can focus on running your business? We’re here to help you with:

• Statutory company accounts & corporation tax• Book keeping & VAT returns• Company secretarial services• Payroll & CIS • Self assessment tax returns

Let’s CookI’m Nicky and I live in Wendover with my lovely family and run my own catering business “Let’s Cook” which means that I spend every day indulging my passion for food and cooking!

Everywhere we look we are surrounded by delicious food, if it’s cookery p r o g r a m m e s , competitions, reality shows, television adverts or magazines and I am very lucky that this is my job! I take great pleasure in helping someone plan their special day,

whether it be for a dinner party, christening, anniversary, birthday celebration, wedding, party or arranging a funeral for a loved one.

I also run cookery classes, cake making for children or something more special for adults.

I have been catering for over 25 years now and have cooked for as few as 6 to as many as 500 guests. I help clients plan and put together their perfect menu and can arrange everything for their event, the venue, staff, china, cutlery and glasses. Whatever you need it is my pleasure to help you.

I have so many wonderful memories over the years…some of my highlights include catering for the Midsomer Murders crew and cast, I’m glad I survived to tell the tale! To bring me back down to earth, I regularly run a small cake making class for schoolboys, which is messy but an absolute pleasure to see their happy faces as they create their edible masterpieces. Just recently I planned a little party for a lovely couple in their 90s who were celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary surrounded by their family; it was such a joy to help make their day so special. And my proudest moment was having the privilege to cook for a member of the royal family...

When it comes to care for an elderly parent, we all want to ensure they are happy, healthy, and able to enjoy later life as much as possible. If one of your parents is no longer able to care for themselves - whether through old age or an illness - it’s important to choose care that best suits your parent’s needs. There are many factors and options to consider – both in terms of the type of care you opt for, and which provider is the most appropriate. Live-in homecare is a little-known alternative to residential care homes, but it’s growing in popularity as a viable option. Trudi Scrivener, Managing Director of Universal Care, one of the members of The Live-In Homecare Hub, explains live-in homecare and how it can benefit the elderly and their family.

Live-in homecare – the basicsLive-in homecare is just that: personal carers that live in their client’s home, 24 hours a day. Everyone has different care requirements and live-in homecare allows people to stay in familiar surroundings with the very highest standards of personally tailored, professional care.

This service is not just about giving essential support such as washing, dressing, preparing meals and help with medication, live-in homecare provides housekeeping and companionship too. Many carers and nurses are also specially trained to cope with particular conditions such as dementia, Parkinson’s, stroke, MS or palliative care. Even tasks like general admin in today’s digital world creates all kinds of challenges and live-in carers are on-hand to manage that too. Very importantly they can also help clients enjoy some of the things in life they once did, for example inviting friends over for lunch or baking a cake.

What are the benefits? With no rigid rules or timetables, each day is planned around the client, giving a sense of independence and dignity. Really getting to know an elderly person is one of the key advantages of live-in homecare. For someone with dementia, something as simple as knowing how they like their toast - how crispy, whether they like their butter cold or soft, or

cut on the diagonal - can make a big difference. Live-in homecare is about caring for the whole person – not just the age or health issue.

There is overwhelming evidence that this kind of constant, considered, one-to-one care produces a far better experience for the vast majority of people. The freedom of being able to ask for a favourite meal, see a football match, sit with a much-loved pet, or go to the seaside on a sunny day means quality of life is truly enhanced.

What about the cost? For most people, full-time care represents a significant financial outlay but live-in fees can compare very favourably with residential homes, especially where couples are looked after together, where it can work out to be significantly less. Where full time care is required, and a person’s primary need is a health need, all of their care fees could be paid by the NHS through a little-known funding stream called NHS Continuing Healthcare. In all cases, talking to a financial advisor who specialises in later life planning is essential.

Outstanding careGood carers love what they do. They tend to be people with a special balance of dedication, reliability and compassion combined with sociability, good humour and common sense. Such are the very high standards required of live-in carers, The Live-in Homecare Information Hub member companies normally reject between 92 and 95 per cent of applicants. Each company will have its own individual vetting procedures, but they typically include several interviews, psychometric testing, DBS and work permit checks, written references, ID and qualification verifications.

Minimising hospital admissionsLive-in homecare offers a very efficient and effective solution to one of the NHS’s major issues: that of hospital bed blocking. With experienced carers on hand to provide a safe and proactively monitored convalescence environment at home, carers undertake around 85% of the work conducted by nurses

– and often work under the auspices of Macmillan and community nurses, freeing up their time. Live-in nurses are also available. Live-in homecare means patients have their own evolving personal care plans and this ongoing bespoke attention means they’re far less likely to suffer from falls, skin conditions and Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) or other infections due to early detection from one-to-one supervision and observation. This has a knock-on effect in terms of releasing the pressure on NHS A&E departments and significantly mitigates the risk of hospital readmissions.

Care optionsThere are two models of live-in home care: full management and introductory. Choosing one service over the other is a matter of personal choice; one may be more appropriate depending on an individual’s personal circumstances and those of their family. With full management, the company providing the care employs and trains its

carers and oversees all aspects of care. It suits families with significant other demands on their time. Introductory care service is where agencies don’t employ carers directly, they are self-employed contractors responsible for their own tax and NI contributions, and are paid directly by clients or their families. This is appropriate for families keen to be closely involved and ‘hands-on’.

Finding out more about live-in homecareIf you would like to find out more about whether live-in homecare is right for your family, www.stayinmyhome.co.uk is a valuable information resource. Developed by The Live-in Homecare Information Hub - a coalition of 13 leading live-in homecare providers - the site illustrates how, with the right professional support, elderly people can stay in their home right through to the end of life. Universal Care is the agency operating in our area. Visit www.universal-care.co.uk for more information. See ad p 25.

Weston Turville Horticultural Society Important news for the Society is that Pat Rutherford, Chairman of the Society for some 10 years, has sadly decided to call it a day. We want to say a very warm “thank you” to Pat for her commitment, the sharing of her horticultural knowledge and for being such a welcoming and friendly Chairman.

This does mean of course that we are looking for a new Chairman for our friendly committee. The Society is over 100 years old so we really do want to keep going. Can you help? We hope there is someone out there who would like to take on this role. Perhaps you are new to the village or area or perhaps you have lived here a long time – is this something for you?

The Society is also looking for a Show Secretary for the Annual Show scheduled for Saturday 8th August. This event does take advanced planning as well as helpers on the day. The latter is never a problem. We are fortunate in that but for the event to continue we do need a Show Secretary to work with the Horticultural Society’s small committee.

This is an administrative role and one of the most attractive things about it is that it involves one planning meeting in the early Spring and then in addition to some admin tasks a further 2/3 meetings with the team in the run up to the Show which takes place on the second Saturday in August. Moreover, all the Procedures are in place for the event and most relevant information is already saved on computer.

If not you, then perhaps you know of someone who would enjoy this role? If you would like to talk through or would like a copy of the Show Secretary Job Description please give Lindsay Smith a call on 01296 613237. Thank you.

spent two years - and close to £20,000 on legal fees trying to secure a sub lease, and we’ve been working closely with the John Colet School and Buckinghamshire County Council. The land on which the pool is built belongs to the council, and it is leased to the school - which is an academy. Because of the academy rules put in place by the Department for Education, we are required to negotiate a sub-lease with the school - which must then be approved by the council.

We do now have a lease that we’ve agreed with the school. At the moment, we’re waiting for approval from Buckinghamshire County Council. Additionally, the council have introduced error and confusion in relation to the boundary around the pool - and despite repeated site visits and several attempts they seem unable to draw a red line on a piece of paper in the correct place. If the boundary is wrong, there can be no sub lease.

We have some great plans for the future - and we have put on display at the pool an artist’s impression and sketch plans prepared by

our architects Levitate. We’ve been working with potential sources of grant funding - and we’re confident that we will be able to get the money that we need. However, we can’t proceed with any plans until we have a lease.

The Wendover Swimming Pool is a great local resource. We have the volunteers, the vision and the funding to develop the pool for the community. All that’s stopping us now is the lack of a lease! If readers would like to help, then we encourage them to contact their County Councillor, and ask them to help us secure the future of the pool.

We are now running a parent rota meaning and have at least 3 adults now helping each week. In addition to the adults we also have 2/3 Explorer Scouts doing Duke of Edinburgh Award Service with each of the colonies.

To complete the Leader teams we now need a person to take on the role of leader - the person who co-ordinates the leader team. This person would work alongside Suzie, our Thursday Beaver Leader, to deliver scouting to the 20 plus 6-8 year olds we have meeting on a Tuesday evening. You do not have to have had a background in Scouts as full training is given.

If you would like to know more or think this is something you would like to do please contact us at [email protected].

Booking an AppointmentIf you want to see a doctor or nurse and your problem is not urgent, please plan ahead and book an appointment either by calling us on 01296-623452 or online at www.westongrove.com. (To make online bookings you must first register: please see the website for details.) Appointments may be booked up to 4 weeks in advance. Most of our appointments are timed between 8am and 6pm, but we also offer early morning (from 07:40), Tuesday evening and Saturday appointments.

Our aim is that you should not have to wait more than 1 week for a routine appointment, although sometimes the wait is longer especially when a specific doctor or nurse is requested, and during school holidays.

For urgent problems please call us as soon as possible. A receptionist will ask you for information about the problem; this is important for assessing the level of priority for your call in relation to

others and help ensure that the most appropriate person deals with your problem. You will be called back by one of the duty doctors to discuss the problem in depth and agree a course of action. Many problems can be dealt with on the phone, but if necessary you will be offered an appointment on the same day.

Health Help NowHealth Help Now is an innovative new NHS service for people in Bucks to check their symptoms and guide them to the best place for their health concerns. It can be downloaded from www.healthhelpnow-nhs.net onto phones, laptops or a tablet.

Medicines for Hay FeverIn line with agreed local health priorities, we do not normally provide prescriptions for medicines for hay fever: patients are requested to buy their medication in pharmacies or on line. All of the commonly used hay fever remedies are available without a prescription.

Antihistamines are generally very effective – we recommend LORATADINE or CERTIRIZINE which rarely cause drowsiness. A steroid nasal spray such as BECLOMETASONE may ease a blocked or runny nose. This should be started before the hay fever season and continued throughout. It is important to use nasal sprays correctly – follow the instructions that come in the box. SODIUM CROMOGLICATE eye drops may relieve itchy, watery eyes. If these preparations do not give adequate relief please make an appointment to see a GP or nurse in the practice.

Dates When We Are ClosedThe health centre will be closed from 6.30pm on Friday 1 May to 7.30am on Tuesday 5 May, and from 6.30pm on Friday 22 May to 7.30am on Tuesday 26 May for the Mayday and Spring bank holidays. On Wednesday 13 May we will close at 1pm for staff training. For full details of our opening hours and information on the services we offer please see www.westongrove.com.

Club Set for Prem!Wendover FC attacked April’s fixtures attempting to progress in 2 cups and strengthen their position in the league.Unfortunately Wendover went out of one of the cups on penalties in tricky circumstances. There was better news in the Marsworth Cup however, where the “Black & Golds” put in a fantastic performance to overhaul a very good Haddenham Utd side 5-3. Wendover will now take on Bucks CC in the cup final.

In the league, Wendover were held to a 1-1 draw away from home to a battling Oving side. They put this disappointment behind them the following week, emphatically running out 3-1 winners against Aylesbury Sports.

Wendover now sit 2nd in the table, 4 points behind leaders Aylesbury Park Rangers, but with 2 games in hand. The teams will play each other in what will effectively be a “title decider”.

Results in April also meant that Wendover are now guaranteed a top 2 finish in the league and thus promotion to the ADL Premier

Division. It is a fantastic achievement, and we’d like to say a big thank you for all the fantastic support we’ve been getting this season. We’re very proud to represent our fantastic village and we hope we’ve done our supporters and the village proud again this season. Find out in next month’s edition if we managed to win the league and cup!

For all our club events, fixtures, results, league tables, news etc please visit our website: www.wendoverfc.com. You can also visit and join our vibrant new Facebook page where you can get fantastic weekly match reports, news, interaction and more!

We have many events coming up, including our annual 5-a-side tournament and summer party. We are proud to announce a fantastic charity football match in conjunction with our brilliant sponsors Sweeney’s Budgens of Wendover. The game will take place on Sunday 31 May from midday at the Wendover FC Clubhouse and pitch on the John Colet School playing fields. Proceeds go to Wendover Youth Centre. Please join us!

Request from Forest Close ResidentsResidents of Forest Close would kindly like to remind people that the Close is a private road with only a pedestrian right of way. Speeding cars who use it to drop off railway passengers are becoming a real danger to our children who live and play in the Close and there have been several incidents where cars and garden walls have been damaged by such vehicles turning. Additionally residents are financially responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the road which is not suitable for heavy traffic use.

We appeal to you not to use it as a drop off point for the train station.

We would like to thank you in anticipation of your cooperation.

Water RebatesIn the August 2014 edition you published a letter from A Evans stating that the Consumer

Council for Water had negotiated with Thames Water a six-year rebate of surface drainage charges to those of us in Wendover and around who had been wrongly paying them them since 2001. The article quoted the Council as saying this “will take quite a while to achieve” but since the rebate might be as much as £128 I felt it worth the wait.

However no rebate has been forthcoming and I have contacted Thames Water to enquire; to my surprise they told me that this has not in fact been agreed and they are still in negotiations with the Council (!). They expect that the matter “should be resolved within six weeks” so I would urge those who are affected by this to get ready to call Thames Water in mid-May and find out what we are going to get and when.

Miggie CottonTerrick

Editor’s note: Some consumers entitled to a water rebate have already received it. Please verify eligibility before contacting Thames Water.

“Our Youth Centre is important to us”It’s the start of the Easter Holidays, the first day, and most young people are working out their plans of what to do. Maybe cinema, swimming, holiday clubs? Well, thirteen of the youth centre’s young people put their plans aside for the evening of Monday 30 March, to come and share why the youth centre is important to them and what they have been doing over the last year.

We had representatives from youth café, youth club and Amazing Donkey. The young people shared with passion, what they had learnt through running the youth café, having discussions on fair trade and how it was a

fun and safe space to meet their friends, The young people who stood up were full of energy, excitement and passion for the centre. Parents, teachers, trustees, volunteers and supporters were also in attendance, and throughout the following week fed back on how these young people shone. The chairman commented that it was one of the most vibrant AGMs he had attended. When we give young people the chance to shine, share their story and take up responsibility, they do more than we hope or imagine.

If you want to find out more about what we do or get involved as a volunteer please get in touch : [email protected]

Gordon Newman was the second headmaster I worked for in a teaching career lasting almost 40 years. I remember him with great admiration, affection and, in many ways, his capacity to inspire awe.

He always seemed to me to be very much ‘his own man’, running the school the way he wanted, unfettered by outside interference. Gordon nurtured both his staff and the pupils placed in his care and had an innate ability to extract the best from both. The school thrived under his kind of leadership and gained a healthy reputation as a good and sound educational establishment. I was proud to be part of his team.

I also regarded him with respect for the way he solved many problems through an indirect and somewhat creative approach; he was one of the great lateral thinkers. Just one example - as a young and hard-up teacher I remember a colleague having a dispute with me that was affecting us both. At the time we had rather long lunch breaks and Gordon suggested taking him for lunch in a local hostelry to sort things out. When I said that I couldn’t afford it, he promptly gave me cash out of his own pocket and insisted I take it. Problem solved, relationships repaired, harmony restored.

During the long school holidays Gordon set up expeditions for sixth form students, where they explored geographical topics, history, theatre and much more. The first was to Iceland; others to Morocco and Greece followed. They were very popular, educationally sound and, as far as I know, unique to John Colet School. Elf’n Safety hadn’t yet made an appearance!

Gordon was respected, but like most of us, had nicknames. Not ones that ridiculed, but

more terms of liking and warmth. Pupils from the 60’s will be familiar with ‘Chad’. Where that name came from I don’t know. The cartoon figure of a little man with a long nose looking over a garden wall seems an unlikely source. I am more familiar with the phrase ‘Batman and Robin’. At morning assemblies Gordon would invariably arrive late, his cloak and gown billowing and blowing in the draught he’d created and closely followed by the (smaller) Deputy Head Teacher, desperately trying to keep up. The memory makes me smile.

Gordon wasn’t really a strict disciplinarian, although some may disagree. He laid down the rules and saw that they were followed, communicated with his staff and pupils, and motivated as well as rewarded them. All of that he did effectively . . . and was a great Head Teacher, the like of which we will never see again. Oh yes, we have forgiven him for wearing those white socks in assembly. Rest in Peace, Mr. Newman, my friend and mentor.

John Winter

Gordon Newman had only been Headmaster for one term when in January 1963, aged 14yrs, I became a pupil at the school. Looking back it is evident that he had the ability to see the hidden potential, be it academic or practical, in all his pupils. With his guidance, the staff’s encouragement and determination, the best was drawn out of them even, when like me, they had almost given up on themselves. In 1965 he appointed me as Head Girl.

Pupils left John Colet with a good grounding both educationally and socially but most important of all . . . a feeling of self worth.

I know that I certainly did, returning to the school - after a period at university, as a fully-fledged teacher. He instilled in every student the fact that they weren’t failures in attending a secondary modern school. I know many who went on to become teachers, doctors, television personalities and important and intelligent people in the community. I know of an eminent professor who started her secondary education in the ‘remedial’ section.

Like many others, I will be forever grateful for the opportunities presented to me by Gordon Newman, a man who had a great educational influence in my early years. Thank you Gordon. May you rest in peace.

Lynda Winter nee Rawlings

I was very sad to hear that Gordon Newman had died. He had such a wonderful aura about him, I felt he would live for ever. I feel very privileged to have been one of the many pupils who attended John Colet when he was Headmaster - and that he certainly was.

Gordon Newman was a stickler for discipline and working to the best of his abilities, expecting the same from all of his pupils. However, despite his aspirations for all of us, there was never any doubt that under that wonderful head of silver hair, smart suit, not to mention the odd waft of pipe tobacco, was a kind gentle man.

Eileen Lock-Macardy

A personal tribute to Mr Newman for his efforts and foresight to give his students the very best start in life: via a sixth form leading to A-levels followed by two degrees. He will always be remembered with affection and thanks.

Local Face:

Longtrack and Grasstrack riderJack started his racing career as a Longtrack Grasstrack racer when he was only 9 years old and was attending Wendover Junior school.

Longtrack and Grasstrack are the fastest off road sports in the world, they are run over 4 laps of an oval track made up of mud, grass and shale all mixed together, then graded flat. The races are short and fast and very exciting to watch. The bikes range from 85cc, up to 500cc which Jack is now racing, fuelled by methanol and go from 0-60 in under 3 seconds. They can reach 130 miles an hour and have no brakes - you use your skill and slide the bike broadside around the corners, the fastest man out of 12 wins.

When Jack first started at the age of 9 he struggled at first with other bikes and riders. All his bikes have had to be specially built for him as he was always small for his age, so when he first rode he was only on an 85cc whilst the other boys were racing 100cc, but he soon progressed to another hand built 200cc Honda four stroke, which brought him his first major trophy at Bridgewater in Somerset. Jack then was in the top 6 at nearly every meeting. It was when we built a one off special 250 JRM that Jack really started to shine. He moved up a class to the inters in which he won the Champion of Chalfont with five straight wins. Next up was the Swindon South of England Championship which he finish 2nd overall for the year. People then started taking note of his skill and speed on his bike and in 2011 was chosen to represent his country in the world championships in Tayak France, up

against the best in the world. Jack finished 9th in the world, a great achievement for his first race abroad. He was also picked to ride the world championships the following year. This time it was Vechta Germany; the conditions were appalling and Jack crashed in qualifying injuring his shoulder and arm with a very sick bike and a stay in hospital his world championship was over.

2012 started on a very positive note finishing in the top three nearly everywhere he rode. He qualified for the British championships but was the dark horse to win which he duly did with a fantastic 4 out of 5 wins and a 2nd in the last race. He was crowned Senior A Youth British Champion 2012, where he was awarded a cheque for £100 for him to give to the school he attended at that time which was the John Colet, Wendover. Jack was given another opportunity by being invited again to ride for his country where he finished 9th.

Winning the British Championships gave Jack a wild card entry into the British Adult

Championships where he made the final but was unable to catch the much faster wiser riders with no less than 6 former British Adult Champions in the Field. A great achievement in his first year’s riding with the adults, and still on his ¾ length hand built frame as he was still not tall enough for a full size frame. 2014 was another good year for Jack, now an established rider in the 250 Adult class. He is ranked no 6 in the country and has some great wins notably the Winbourne Whoppa National meeting, second at Somerset and third in the end of season showdowns.

In 2015 Jack is moving up to the 500cc Adult class which is the premier class of the sport, so another new frame a GM engine. He will try to establish himself in the sport at a higher level, racing at the end of April in Shwarme Germany, where crowds abroad can reach up to 50000 plus, and he is still only 18.

Jack would like to thank all the people that have helped and sponsored him as he couldn’t have done any of this without them: Mick Surman Motorcycles Aylesbury who have been there from the beginning; Sam Arnold Electrical Aylesbury; Timo UK; Rip n Roll; K&B Family Butchers Princes Risborough; Morris oils; BAT Tuning; Rickon Handle bars; FB Raceplates. We would also like to thank the Lionel Abel-Smith Trust which has helped with Jack’s Race Suits in the past. There is a local meeting 26 July at Rectory Farm Puttenman

Wendover Parish Council PageMatters Arising

View from the ChairAs this is my End of Term “View” I must thank our departing Councillors for their endeavours over the last 8 years: Karen Saunders, our Chair of Staffing, gave undivided support during the Tribunal; Emma Carroll whose work with the Christmas and Wendover Celebrates events has been invaluable; and Cheryl Stamper, our representative on the Lionel Abel-Smith Trust. All three will be missed and Wendover owes them a debt of gratitude for all their efforts and hard work. Our staff also deserve my thanks: Charlotte, Sarah, Andy and Tony. The quality of the team is reflected in the successes of what has been achieved over the last few years.

Only 10 people have decided to stand for the Parish Council and as there are 13 places to fill there will be no election. I enjoy the process of an election and I think it’s a good way to refresh things and keep councillors on their toes. However this lack of willingness to stand means either that our electorate is happy with what we are doing, are apathetic or both! We have what we have, but watch out – we will co-opt a further three Councillors for full Parish representation of Wendover and to spread the workload, which will otherwise be unfairly heavy on the few.

Robert Duggan, Chairman

Parish ImprovementsIt has been a busy time for the Parish Council as we have recently completed several larger projects aimed at improving the facilities we provide to our residents. We are very pleased to report that all three projects were done in budget and finished on time.

Witchell Car ParkThe improvements to the Witchell Car Park, significantly increasing the available number of spaces, are now finished and we would like to thank the Cricket Club for their patience while the works were underway.

Timber Fitness TrailNow the new Timber Fitness Trail on Hampden Meadow has been completed we hope that some of you may take the opportunity to ‘stretch your legs’ and try it out for yourselves. The Parish Council was successful in its application for a grant of £5400 from AVDC to part fund the trail. There have been many positive comments so far and if it proves successful we may consider putting in a similar trail elsewhere.

Ashbrook EntranceNew ‘hard standing’ at the vehicle entrance to Ashbrook Park has been installed to prevent erosion particularly in the bad weather when activities and events are held on the land.

Annual Parish MeetingThank you to all the various groups who came along and the public who supported us. It was a pleasant and enjoyable evening.

Dogs on leadsNotices on PC ParklandAlthough many of our residents have well behaved dogs which are monitored when off their leads, this is sadly not always the case. The Council has decided that badly behaved dogs running around Council parkland is unacceptable. It presents issues for people trying to enjoy the facilities with unwanted attention from out of control dogs and owners not clearing up after dogs that are out of their sight.

The Parish Council will be putting up “polite notices” on its parkland asking residents to clear up after their dogs and to put them on leads. There is no intention, currently, to make this request legally enforceable and only if dogs (or their owners) are behaving badly would any representative of the Parish Council ask that a dog is kept on a lead.
