President's Message By Sandy Hutton

Several psychologists have studied creativity and consensus seems to be that the creative process is a blissful state of self-forgetfulness where the individual becomes totally absorbed by the task of creating. I’m spending February and early March being absorbed by the task of creating. Not what I usually work at–weaving, sewing, etc.– but learning how to experiment with a tool of creating. I have taken on my nemesis of several years by enrolling in a 6-week, intense, online course on Photoshop. I have been totally absorbed by the task of learning, practicing, and doing homework. I knew Photoshop was an immense bundle of formulas for changing color, line, texture–just about everything a graphics person would need, but it’s even more massive than I thought. This week we’ve been working on how to manipulate at least a dozen different aspects of color in at least a dozen different ways. I won’t retain all of it, but I have a view of what is possible, and importantly, where to find information on what I want to do. That reminds me–I still have two homework assignments to turn in by tonight. I can’t say it’s been fun and I’ve discovered I don’t learn as easily as I used to. I’m looking forward to having time to do something creative at the loom. I hope you’re finding and removing your blocks to creativity.

First Vice-President's Report by Cherie Irvin

February was a great meeting in that we got to see pictures of 200 year old German looms with beams the size of trees and warping wheels that hold 85 yards of warp! I wonder how long it would take to weave all that warp, and if the weaver would get bored. It was wonderful to listen to Judith Hamilton's experiences visiting and working in a weaving workplace set up for disabled people in Bethel, Germany. It was very interesting hearing her talk about the history of the city, before and during the war, and how Bethel became to be known as a city known for fine linens.

Please join us in March for another exciting armchair travel event to Eastern Bhutan, which has just recently opened to tourism. Judi Arndt will be presenting a talk on the country's travel and textile traditions. She will be showing us a couple of their traditional costumes. We will also be taking a photo excursion of their temples and festivals that Judi visited. Come learn about the Bhutan backstrap weaving and natural dyeing traditions.

See you then!

Set aside some time each day to do your favorite things.

Cherie

Weaving Sample for March 2016 Newsletter By Cathy Sterling

With goals of joining in on the towel exchange due in December, wanting to put on a long warp using a trapeze, and wanting to make each towel different, I chose the “Goose-Eye Blocks” Pattern on page 36 of Marguerite Davison’s A Handweaver’s Pattern Book. WARP: cottolin WARP LENGTH: 7 yards, threaded alternating 2 natural, 2 yellow yarns TOTAL WARP YARNS = 474 ends + 2 floating selvedges WARP WIDTH: 19.75” WEFT: cottolin and one towel a mixture of cottolin and linen from my stash SETT: 24 epi REED: 12 dent, sleyed at 2 per dent 1. Using a trapeze (see May/June 2014 Handwoven “Trapeze Artist: A Warping Technique for the Designing Weaver” by Melodie Usher), I placed 7 yards of warp on my 4-shaft JL Hammett counter-balanced loom. I really like using a trapeze because the warp is wound onto the back beam very evenly, plus I can do the warping all alone. 2. Weaving Goose-Eye Blocks is a bit tricky because you have to keep track of the correct # of repetitions and direction of the twill blocks and then the correct # of repetitions and direction of the alternating point twills. I found it helped to sketch the direction of the twills next to the treadling #’s, and I marked my place for each sequence so I didn’t lose my place. I also found the greater contrast in color between the warp and the weft, the easier it was to see the developing pattern. 3. I wove a total of 5 different towels and did some sampling to try out different colors and treadlings. Each towel was different (either in colors or treadling) which made them fun to weave.

• Weaving the pattern “tromp as writ” in one color gets pretty boring and looks pretty boring. (see diagram 1 on page 5)

• To spice things up a bit on two of the towels, I added supplementary colored warp yarns at the points of each of the point twills.

o One towel, I repeated the same color in the weft at the points of the point twills, making a plaid towel with single warp and weft yarns in contrasting color.

o The second towel, I added two different colors in the warp and then worked up a repetition of 3 different stripes in the weft. I believe that was my favorite towel and it certainly looked the most complex (see diagram 2).

• Two of the towels were woven in a different treadling pattern which made for a totally different look as well as a little relief from having to keep such a keen eye on the twill and point twills (see diagram 3).

Friends of Fiber Festival will be June 18th in the La Veta town park. It is just a one day event and booths are only $25. It was great last year and we anticipate it being equally fun and well attended this year. Contact: Sandy Dolak, 719-251-1271 for more information.

Sandy will mention this award during the general meeting and encourage PPWG members to enter the exhibit.
