The above quote from Shakespeare’s Hamlet is perhaps reminiscent of God’s command to Moses in the

Torah, “You shall make sacred garments for Aaron your brother for dignity and adornment.” (Exodus 28: 2). What made me think of these quotes is the approach of Purim, which will be celebrated at our congregation on Wednesday March 4th with a full evening’s program of fun, food, entertainment and tradition in the true spirit of this most joyous of Jewish holidays that you won’t want to miss!

But these quotes also expose (no pun intended – read on!) a more serious side to Purim that can be demonstrated through the clothes or “costumes” we wear – that of masks and disguise, masquerades and concealment, robes, exposure and intrigue. In the Hamlet quote, Polonius is giving advice to his son Laertes who is departing for Paris, and concludes with the famous words of wisdom, a continuation of the quote in the title above, “This above all: to thine ownself be true.” That in essence is the story of Purim!

The Persian King Achashverosh, according to our tradition, was not really of royal origin; rather by marrying Vashti he married into Persian royalty. Her banishment or killing for refusing to remove her royal robes (note the play on clothing here) created a problem with royalty for the King.

The plot thickens as Haman the interloper, who seems to rise from nowhere, is out for his own personal power possibly at the expense of the king.

Mordechai take his own fate into his hands by standing up for his Jewishness and refusing to bow down to Haman. As the plot thickens Mordechai removes his clothes and puts on sackcloth and ashes and mourns at the palace gates, as its forbidden to enter the palace unsummoned or in inappropriate attire.

Furthermore when Esther is appointed queen, Mordechai at first warns her not to reveal her true Jewish identity, fearful of the consequences for the Jews. But as matters deteriorate he admonishes her (Esther 4: 14) that the continued concealment of her identity

will bring disaster upon her and her family. Mordechai demands similar self-sacrifice of Esther to save the Jews, just as he took his destiny into his own hands against Haman’s inflated ego – because no one, not even the Queen, was allowed access to the King unless summoned. Esther declares the famous words of the Megillah (4: 16), “v’cha’asher avad’ti avad’ti – if I die I die,” or, ‘so be it, what will be will be…’

When the King asks Haman what shall be done (6: 6-7) to the person he wishes to honor, Haman, thinking its him the King is going to honor, advises Achashverosh to clothe the honoree in the King’s apparel including the royal crown and horse.

In this story of hidden identities, even God’s name we know to be hidden within the Megillah. God’s more common names are not overtly stated, rather God’s presence is hidden in words such as “Makom,” “Mi,” “Hamelech” etc. The reader is expected to come to the full realization that God is behind the story of the redemption of the Persian Jews. Perhaps it is no coincidence that the only Parshah during Moses’s lifetime from which his name is missing is Parshat Tetsaveh which is always read around Purim (this year in fact on Shabbat Zachor, the Shabbat before Purim).

This could be taken as a wake-up call to us Jews around the world concerning the alarming rise in anti-Semitism, and the furor surrounding Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu’s impending speech on Iran (note Persia again) before Congress. The story of Purim is, amongst other things, about the right time to keep quiet or speak up, and the self sacrifice it takes for the sake of our People. Perhaps during the Shoah, had more Jewish leaders been willing to speak up, the result might have been different and how many of our families’ lives could have been saved? In the words of Shakespeare, “To thine own self be true.”

Please join us on March 4th at 6:30pm for our fantastic Purimspiel produced (again) by our own in-house talented Meira and Deena Zucker that many of our children and adults are working so hard on, followed by full traditional Megillah reading.

Rabbinic Insights from Rabbi Jason

March has always been one of my favorite months because it means we’ll be celebrating the fun and

exciting holiday of Purim. I think Purim is the best Jewish holiday (if we’re allowed to play favorites) because it is a time for celebration, but it’s so much more than that. Like Hanukkah, Purim celebrates our people’s triumph thanks to God over an evil tyrant. In the case of Purim of course we’re talking about Haman. The difference between Hanukkah and Purim is that Hanukkah tells the story of actual events that befell our ancestors, while Purim is a wonderfully constructed fable with fun characters.

I love hearing the words of Megillat Esther and the fun musical trope (cantillation) that we only use for the megillah. I love the various traditions and rituals of Purim as well. The giving gifts to the poor is a beautiful tradition and one I’m glad that my children have taken on as well. I enjoy trading delicious mishloach manot with friends and drowning out the name of the evil Haman. I also still (I’m a kid at heart) enjoy dressing up in costume on Purim and helping my kids prepare creative costumes.

Purim is certainly a fun holiday; you can’t disagree with that. But there’s a serious side to it as

well. And that’s the lesson that we must pay heed to in our own day. There are Haman characters in real life in the 21st century and we cannot ignore them. Just as Haman was envious of the Jewish people and that envy led him to want to annihilate the Jewish nation, today there are vicious savages who want nothing more than to see the world rid of the Jewish people -- sometimes their hatred is masked by their message of anti-Zionism and anti-Israel. Their intentions are clear -- our complete destruction.

On Purim we recall that our people survived the plot of an evildoer, and we, the Jewish community centuries later is still celebrating. We are a joyous people and our ability to find joy in the world has led to our survival. If you’ve forgotten what it is like to really express yourself with simcha, with sheer joy and merriment, I encourage you to come to the synagogue on Purim -- alone or with your family.

I’ll close with a blessing. Eloheinu v’Elohei Avoteinu v’Imoteinu, Our God and the God of our ancestors, during this most challenging time in which our world seems more fragile than ever, grant us the ability to find moments of happiness and increase our joy. Chag Purim Sameach!

Page 4: March 2015 bulletin

This last January, both Jews and non-Jews around the world marked the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. The gathering

in Poland was attended by some 300 Auschwitz survivors, many of whom regularly speak of their experiences to groups that had only read of the Holocaust in news accounts and books. When asked why at their advanced age they continue to speak of the Holocaust more than 70 years after its end, one of the attendees replied that “There are still a lot of Holocaust-deniers the world over and if we don’t speak out, the world won’t know what happened”.

Terrorist attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions in Europe and the U.S. are reminders that as Jews we must continue to be vigilant by not allowing

misinformation and evil to go unchallenged. Our Jewish community is fortunate to have

strong leadership from the Jewish Federation of Toledo who aggressively endeavors to provide a balanced viewpoint to challenge potential negative or misinformed views of our community and Israel.

Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Propaganda Minister has been quoted as saying, “A huge lie repeated often enough is accepted as truth.”

We once again (still?) live in a time when we must be committed to countering media bias and views that characterize Jews in a negative light. Opinions on any topic are everywhere, however, informed opinions are in short supply. Let truth be our light.

ORAL HISTORIESOral Histories will begin after Passover. The committee plans on interviewing as many members of the congregation as possible. Interviews will be videotaped and transcribed. Everyone who is interviewed will review and approve the final transcript before it is printed and archived. Excerpts of interviews may be incorporated into the 150th celebration. The interviews will be archived and the oral histories will become a permanent record of the history of Congregation B’nai Israel. If you would like to share your history for our B’nai Israel archives, please call the office.

Help us Preserve Congregation B’nai Israel’s HistoryAs part of our preparation to celebrate B’nai Israel’s 150th anniversary, Cathy Sperling has undertaken to preserve our historical memorabilia. A number of old black and white photos have been saved in our archives over the years without identification. We need your help in identifying some of the people, the events and the year in which the photo was taken. Please view the following photo and let Cathy know (419-841-1927 or [email protected]) if you can identify the people. David S. Stone Religious SchoolThe Torch Project-MiDor L’Dor

Please mark your calendars for Sunday, March 29th. We are having a very special event titled The Torch Project-M’Dor L’Dor- light from generation to generation. This a project of the Education Task Force of the Partnership with our chaverim in the Western Galilee region of Israel. We will decorate six large canvas torches which will be part of a Yom Ha Atzmaut display, then they will go to Israel to be part of a relay in August and will be displayed in the Sukkah of dignitaries in Jerusalem. Each torch will represent a different Jewish value, moral, inspiration, insight, etc. that is passed down from the previous generation and wish to pass forward to the next generation. Our students, as well as parents, grandparents and any other congregants interested will partake in this meaningful project led by Cantor Lichterman from 9:30-10:30 on Sunday, March 29. We invite everyone to stay for our interactive model seder to follow this wonderful intergenerational project to show our support for Israel. We will share this event with photos and video for our chaverim in the Western Galilee as well.

We had an incredible Disability Awareness Program last month. Phyllis Wittenberg was the amazing teacher who led our prek-k program. Mushka Matusof with her warm and compassionate personality engaged our 1st-3rd graders, along with Paul Causman reading a moving story about a girl with dyslexia, with his wonderful theatrical voice. Our 4th-7th graders participated in an anti-bullying session with Bill Geha and Ken Newbury. They were very attentive and responsive as Ken provided a Jewish perspective on the topic and Bill along with the Peace Project provided information through dialogue and music. The 8-10th graders were part of a panel discussion about traumatic brain injuries. We had more parents and community members than ever before. This was a truly emotional morning for all involved.

Our B’nai Mitzvah class, along with our friends from Shomer Emunim had the opportunity to do a valuable mitzvah project for JFS. They learned what it was like to live on a very limited budget and purchase enough groceries for a week, by grocery shopping and taking the food to JFS. This hands on experience is important for our students.

Our Community Purim Carnival will be held at Shomer Emunim from 10:30-12:00 on Sunday, Mar 8. We are thrilled to collaborate with all of our area synagogues, as well as Federation to enjoy Purim together. Our teens will be running the games at the carnival and all tickets sold prior will go directly to CBI. Please purchase tickets for food and games from the CBI office ahead of time. Additional tickets may be purchased the day of the event to be split by all congregations. This will be a great event to enjoy as a community.

Loving Leah

Leah is married to Orthodox rabbi, Benjamin Lever, whose brother, Jake, is a successful cardiologist and non-practicing Jew. Jake is stunned when Benjamin dies suddenly, but not as stunned as when he is

told that, under an ancient Jewish Law, he is expected to marry the childless Leah to carry on Benjamin’s name.

Congratulations to Sophie Rose Zucker for winning First Place in the prose category in the Carnegie Mellon University 2015 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Writing Awards.

Junior chemistry and creative writing double major Sophie Zucker took to the podium last to read from her first place-winning essay, “The Washing.” Her hook, a description of a chemical hair-straightening process called the Blowout — of which her mother is a devotee — seems, at surface level, unrelated to issues of race. The connection is subtle but significant, and becomes more overt as the piece goes on.

“It’s about how hair is racialized,” Zucker said in an interview. “Straight hair is seen as professional and socially acceptable; curly hair is seen as deviant.” Because it’s associated with people of color, curly hair is construed

as exotic and low class — prompting many black women to straighten, weave, or otherwise alter their hair, from a “desire to emulate whiteness.”

Zucker said she started researching the natural hair movement in earnest during her senior year of high school, when one of her friends decided to go natural — and when Zucker herself was “trying to write about my identity in a more nuanced way.” While simultaneously learning about antisemitism and modern-day Judaism, Zucker watched Chris Rock’s documentary Good Hair and read Malcolm X’s autobiographical descriptions of hair straightening in the African American community.

“ ‘We’re all just trying to look whiter,’ ” Zucker quoted her mother in her essay. “...‘Why do you think black women get weaves? Why do you think I straighten my hair? It’s not because it’s cheap or easy.’ ”
