Parents’ Educational Series Announces Our First Book Club!

Dear Parents:Yet even now, says the LORD, return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the LORD, your God, For he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and relenting in punishment. (Joel 2:12-13)

In April of last year I found myself sitting at dinner with my wife, along with some colleagues at the NCEA conference in New Orleans. The topic of our dinner discussion was the paradox that it is sometimes difficult to practice one’s faith in a Catholic school. We were brainstorming ideas of how we could enhance the faith life and practice of our high school students that would not be overly intrusive on their already busy schedules. This discussion has continued via email and telephone and the result is very simple ways to live out the faith that during Lent. This project is called 20 Ways in 20 Days.

The premise is simple – there is a focus activity for each of the 20 school days during the four weeks that precede our Easter/Spring Break (begins on March 5). For example, one of the activities is to make the Sign of the Cross when passing by the doors of the Chapel. Another example is to double one’s Mite Box contribution (or give for the first time) or to pray the Act of Contrition and then reconcile with someone who you have offended. All of these activities fit the Lenten themes of prayer, fasting, almsgiving and repentance. Through participation in conscious, deliberate and simple actions, we believe that we can impact a profound change in the name of Jesus Christ for Bishop Gorman Catholic High School.

Students, faculty members and parents are all invited to participate in this endeavor. The calendar will be present in all classrooms to remind everyone of the daily activity. Furthermore, we will have reminders on the Gorman Daily News and on the website. While we will be promoting this effort, the only accountability is your own personalized level of commitment to God surrounding this project.

So often I have found that I struggle to find something meaningful to “give up” for Lent. 20 Ways in 20 Days will require not only giving up, but giving back and living the faith. Blessed Mother Teresa said “What I do you cannot do; but what you do, I cannot do. The needs are great, and none of us, including me, ever do great things. But we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful.” I invite everyone to take some time to do some small things with great love, engage in some spiritual discipline during this holy season of Lent, and join in the 20 Ways in 20 Days initiative!

In Christ,

Kevin P. KieferPrincipal

Chemistry IN action

Art worksMrs. Feely and the rest of the Visual Arts Department would like to congratulate Ruth Larmore ’12 on her continued success with the Scholastic Art Competition. She received two Honorable Mentions for her beautiful drawings: “Self Portrait and “Pencil Neck.”

This is the second year in a row that she has been part of this elite collection of student work. Her artwork is on display at the Springs Preserve from February 4th through March 4th.

Congratulations!

Students in Mrs. Burgar’s chemistry class synthesized a highly

flexible cross-linked polymer and tested its physical properties.

The objective of this lab was to recreate everyone’s favorite

childhood toy, Silly Putty. This type of polymer has elastic

properties because it will recover its original size and shape after

being pulled, twisted and compressed.

For over 80 years, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards have allowed 87,000-plus kids a year to compete for the title of the best artists/writers in the world. This contest encourages students in grades seven through twelve to showcase their talents

while receiving guidance and scholarships.

Tiffany Helmandollar ’12 earned Gold Key-standing for her poetry portfolio. This is the first time a Gorman student has earned this accommodation for either poetry or a portfolio AND SHE DID BOTH.

Further congratulations to Corynne McEachern ’15 for her persuasive essay. She earned a Gold Key and “Best in Show.”

Tiffany’s piece will compete at the Nationals in the portfolio category. Corynne’s piece also will compete at Nationals, but in two categories—the Gold Key’s persuasive awards and in the America’s Voice Contest. She was selected to represent the state of Nevada for the latter accommodation. Good luck ladies. We hope to see you at Carnegie Hall!

The following students also earned either Honorable Mention or Silver Key for their submissions:

Madison Alder ’13, Marisa Bankey ’12, Katie Barnett ’12, Kenton Batson ’12, Sarah Bessen ’12, Kimberly Briones ’12, Elizabeth Charles ’12, Anamarie Ellis ’12, Tracey Gaydosh ’12, Jeremy Hyde ’12, Samantha Itchon ’12, James Macatangay ’12, Bryce McEachern ’14, Cody Miller ’12, Paige Pensivy ’12, Tiffany Solari ’13, Komal Sood ’12, Roberto Thomas ’12, and Rachel Wallace ’12.

Announcing the 2012 Scholastic Art & Writing Regional gold Key Recipients!

Stephan Pang Kee ’12, Stevi Portz ’13, Roger Gordon ’14, William Boyd ’13, and Sean Johnson ’13.

Advancement

Social Media is becoming more and more a part of our everyday l ives .Facebook,Twit ter , Y o u T u b e , M y S p a c e , Google+, are just a few of the popular sites people are using to stay in touch!

As part of our Beyond the Books Program and Parent Speaker Series, Linda Fogg-Phillips, speaker and co-author of Facebook for Parents addressed our community on the importance of using these sites as constructive tools. Students learned how to become mindful and socially responsible on these sites, while parents and teachers learned how to become mentors in the virtual world.

Bishop Gorman is stepping further into the social media world as well!

Parents and Students: Join our Facebook page to stay up-to-

W ith the announcement of the Bishop Gorman Athletic Training Center and watching the site

being prepared, students taking Mr. Feely’s Computer Graphics class were asked to play the role of a 3D artist.

With only a site plan and elevations, students created a three dimensional model of the ATC building. From interpreting the architectural drawings to creating the elevated model, students received first-hand experience in a design and production environment. Our class is particularly proud of Colton Castro ’14. Colton has taken this project further than any student. Colton added building finishes and superimposed his 3D rendering into a site photograph. Congratulations Colton, we are so proud of this accomplishment!
