Congratulations to the Bishop Gorman Football team as they won

their 6th state championship in a row, beating Reed High School in

the State Championship game. They finished the season 15-0 and

were the consensus National Champions. Several of the Gaels

received end of season and all-state Awards. The biggest awards

went to sophomore quarterback, Tate Martell, who was named

the Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year and Coach Tony Sanchez,

who was named the US Army All-American Bowl National Coach

of the Year. Cordell Broadus ’15 played in the Under Armor

All-American game and Nicco Fertitta ’15 and Alize Jones ’15

participated in the Army All-American game.

Gaels Football 6th Consecutive State Champions and National Champions

Congratulations to Coach Tony Sanchez. On December 11th, Coach Sanchez left Bishop Gorman to accept the head coaching position at UNLV. He was 86-5 in six seasons with the Gaels. He leaves the program in good hands as his brother and Defensive Coordinator, Kenny Sanchez, has been named the new Head Coach of the BGHS program.

Please be aware that you must be verified by FACTS Grant and Aid for your application to be reviewed by the Bishop Gorman Tuition Assistance Committee. Incoming Freshman that have been verified on or before February 28, 2015 and reviewed will receive notifications of awards by late March. All returning students that have been verified and reviewed will receive notification of awards by mid-April.

The Bishop Gorman Internship Program was designed to offer students a first-hand look into an interested career field during the summer prior to their senior year. By participating in the program, students will gain firsthand experience within various businesses including law, banking, marketing, medical, journalism and more. This program gives participants the advantage of professional experience for college applications, as well as providing a clearer perspective of career goals and objectives. Students will be chosen based on their GPA, written application and interview. This program is beneficial to help students develop a professional skill set and begin to network within the community! iPads: Just a digital book? What’s the big deal?

An iPad isn’t just a replacement of a book. It isn’t just the internet at your fingertips. The iPad is so much more than just a convenience. It is an evolution of classroom learning. Students at Bishop Gorman are now able to learn at their pace, individualize their instruction, problem solve using creation, and collaborate with classmates. With so many great apps, teachers are able to make learning more interactive and engaging. The iPad also allows teachers to create lessons in advance so they can still teach even if they are out of the classroom.

Most nights, some students are assigned to create a video of a specific problem, using Showbie. It is amazing to see the videos that they are creating to help teach one another. Once they have created the video they post them to a class Padlet. Students then are not only teaching other students, but have a resource to look

back on as they are trying to better grasp the presented material.

Just recently we tried something new in my Honors geometry class. Students had to create a flowchart presentation, applying the properties of quadrilaterals that have been learned in class, to create their own “mindmap” presentation. In the past, students would draw a flowchart on paper copying down what is presented to them. This year, instead, I had them create their own. Students are able to be more creative in the classroom in how they organize their thoughts, and display the relationships between the polygons. The students are now making their very own ideas come to life.

As we embark in the future of technology, teachers are excited to help students drive their own learning and our iPad program is making this possible. Students are more excited to learn, knowing that they hold the key to their education in their very own hands.

Congratulations to Gillian Croshaw ’18 on being accepted to perform in The Nutcracker ballet this past December at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. Way to go Gillian!

Team BGHS Best Buddies ran in this year’s 10th annual Santa Run. This is our fifth year participating with over 30 students running or walking for Opportunity Village. We also participated in Best Buddies’ Night at Opportunity Village’s Magical Forest! As a promoter group, we give of ourselves as much as we can as volunteers and leaders within our community. Best Buddies also volunteered at the Super Hero Ball, a truly special evening where we witnessed inspiring stories and speeches from the amazing participants, as well as the induction of the newest honorees into the Super Hero Alliance. Great job GAELS!

Campus Ministry

Making a Difference in our CommunityBrandon Wulff ’15 was invited to participate in the International Power Showcase High School Home Run Derby in Miami, FL. The event took place during Christmas break at the Marlins Park. Not only was Brandon excited to have been invited, but it also gave him an opportunity to participate in Home Runs That Help, an outreach initiative by the Power Showcase to reach out to a patient in our local children’s hospital and help raise money for him/her. Brandon met a nine year old boy, Juan, who is battling leukemia. Juan is currently being treated at UMC. Brandon partnered with Juan in the Home Runs That Help.

Brandon reached out to his friends and families and through social media, he was able to reach so many more people to help raise money for Juan. Some of his friends and families pledged a set amount of money per home run that Brandon hit out, and all the money raised was given to Juan. Brandon was able to hit 7 homeruns, received the award for “Most Consecutive

Homeruns” and raised $1500! Brandon will visit Juan and personally hand him the first ball that he hit out as well as a check for the money raised. Brandon loves baseball, but as much as he wanted to go to the showcase, he really wanted to raise money for Juan even more.

Brandon’s family applauded his efforts and said “We wholeheartedly believe that being at Bishop Gorman has helped Brandon open his heart to the community and to those who are less fortunate. He’s met a friend for life in Juan.”

Taizé Prayer

Taizé prayer services were held for the Theology classes during 1st semester. A Taizé worship service involves sung and chanted prayers, meditation, a period of silence, etc. Students really enjoyed this form of prayer so Campus Ministry will be doing Taizé again in the Theology classes during the block periods on Feb 24th and 25th this semester.

Quest Retreat:

On QUEST students learn more about themselves, their relationships with family and friends, and their relationship with God. It is led by sophomores who have made a previous QUEST retreat. Quest 60 at Mt. Potosi will be held on March 11-12th.

Some people think “Service is service”, but through our Christian Service Hours program we are educating our students about the varying kinds of service they can perform. First and foremost, we

have DIRECT SERVICE HOURS: this is service that involves the student having a direct human encounter, working directly with those in need. Our students are strongly encouraged to earn as many direct service hours as possible. A great example is going to St. Vincent’s Lied Dining Room at Catholic Charities and serving meals to the homeless. Students may complete ALL 100 hours in direct service, if they so choose! Secondly, there are INDIRECT SERVICE HOURS: these are hours that support direct service programs, or projects that support humanity. An example would be helping with a food drive for the homeless that will be delivered by someone else. Indirect service hours are limited to 25 hours (out of the 100 hours total). The final type of service in our program is ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT: this would be service where help is needed, but is more of a responsibility of being a member of that organization or group. Examples would be helping your soccer team run a youth camp, being a teacher for your church’s Vacation Bible School, or assisting with a back to school barbecue at your school prior to Bishop Gorman. A maximum of 25 hours (out of your 100 total) may be dedicated to organizational support. WHAT KINDS OF CHRISTIAN SERVICE HOURS ARE THERE?: A New Way To Track Service Hours!

This year, we have begun using the service hours tracking system, x2VOL, “Time To Volunteer.” Students register for x2VOL through their Naviance account and will view service options available to them on the site. We have a complete listing of all service agencies on the Bishop Gorman website under “Campus Ministry”, and our bulletin board in the lobby of the Chapel has contact names and numbers for places to serve, as well. When students go to complete their service hours it is very important that they get a business card from an adult there who will verify their service. A real convenience of having the x2VOL program is the ability to serve the hours, open the app on your phone or IPAD, and submit the hours immediately after completing the service. There is no paperwork involved! If a student has questions regarding x2VOL they are welcome to stop in Campus Ministry at any time. Please be sure to include the contact’s email address when submitting your hours in x2VOL.

Counselor’s CornerCOURSE REGISTRATION

Course registration for 2015-2016 school year will start mid February. In order to register, the following two items must be completed:

1. All forms and the registration fee of $500 are due to the tuition office.2. Service hours should be on file as follows: (See page 4 for details)

Freshmen: a minimum of 12.5 hours Sophomores: a minimum of 37.5 hours Juniors: a minimum of 62.5 hours

Once all forms and fees are submitted, a pass will be sent for each student. Please be prepared with your class selections! The course registration guide will be available on www.bishopgorman.org and Edline. Parents are encouraged to go online with their students to review the course content and the prerequisites for each class.

JUNIORSJuniors will take the Nevada Department of Education High School Proficiency Test during the week of March 2-6. The subject areas are Math, Reading, Writing, and Science. Please encourage your student to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, bring two #2 pencils with him or her, and have a serious attitude about these tests. We will receive the results in May. Students who are absent or fail any section of the test can take a Make-Up Test in November of their senior year. Test Day is a full day of school for all students, including juniors and seniors, and all students MUST wear school uniform.

SENIORS

College Decisions: Many of you are starting to receive decisions from the colleges to which you have applied. As you receive this information, please update your Naviance Family Connection account. Were you admitted, denied, or waitlisted? Inquiring minds need to know!!! This information remains confidential so please don’t hesitate to share. Admission decisions from each of the colleges to which you have applied need to be recorded in order to pick up your cap and gown in May.

Scholarship Information: Many colleges will include scholarship information in their admission letters. Some will send this information separately. Regardless of how you receive it, please make a copy of your scholarship letter and give it to Mrs. Burford in Student Services. Scholarship information is listed in the graduation program and we want to make sure that you get recognition for the scholarship you receive. You do not have to attend the school offering the scholarship in order for the information to appear in the graduation program. We include college related scholarships as well as outside scholarship information, so please bring us a copy of everything you receive.

Athletics | Activities

The men’s basketball team is having another standout year and has played some of the best teams in the country in different events and tournaments. Before Christmas, the men’s basketball program hosted the 3rd Annual Tarkanian Classic at Bishop Gorman, Faith Lutheran, and the Orleans Arena. Hosting over 70 teams, the four-day event was attended by teams from all parts of the United States, as well as teams from Australia, Germany, New Zealand, and the Bahamas. With several college coaches and scouts in attendance for the event, the semi-finals were played at the 9,000 seat Orleans Arena and the finals were all played at Bishop Gorman. In three years, this event has quickly become one of the premier high school basketball tournaments in the country.

After Christmas, the men’s team traveled to Myrtle Beach, SC, to participate in the 34th Annual Beach Ball Classic. With a victory in the Championship game against Franklin, OH, the team became just the 4th team to win the tournament multiple times, and the first team west of the Texas to win the prestigious event since 1996.

The winter season at Bishop Gorman is under way. Bowling, basketball, and wrestling have taken part in several tournaments and pre-season games and matches. They are all are currently participating in Sunset League Play.

The wrestling program continues to see its participation numbers go up each year. They have competed in several high level tournaments and have done well in preparation for Regionals and the State Tournament.

The bowling program continues to be one of Bishop Gorman’s most popular sports and is having another great year.

The women’s basketball team is currently ranked #1 in Nevada and has won the Las Vegas Invitational Tournament at Bishop Gorman and the Southern California Holiday Prep Classic in San Diego. Look for the Lady Gaels to continue to work their way to the League Championship and make a run at the State Title.
