The 2016 United Nations International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP) (1 October) will take a stand against ageism by drawing attention to and challenging negative stereotypes and misconcep-tions about older persons and ageing. The theme of International Day of Older Persons 2016 is “Take a Stand Against Ageism.”
Ageism is a widely prevalent and prejudicial attitude that stems from the assumption that age discrimination, and sometimes neglect and abuse of older persons is a social norm and therefore, acceptable, according to the United Nation’s Divi-sion for Social Policy Development Ageing.
It is a reality in some form in all societies, and finds expression in individuals’ attitudes, institu-tional and policy practices, as well as media rep-resentation that devalue and exclude older per-sons. In 2014, Governments around the world adopted a resolution (E/RES/2014/7) at the Eco-nomic and Social Council that recognized ageism as “the common source of, the justification for and the driving force behind age discrimination.”
Such discrimination shapes how older persons are treated and perceived by their societies, in-cluding in medical settings and workplaces, cre-ating environments that limit older persons’ po-tential and impact their health and well-being.
The failure to tackle ageism undermines older persons’ rights and hinders their contributions to social, economic, cultural and political life.
The 2016 commemoration of the United Na-tions International Day of Older Persons at UN Headquarters in New York will take place on 6 October.

Residents of St. Augustine Manor are kindly reminded not to feed local wild-life. Leaving bread and other scraps in the yard in an effort to attract birds and squirrels also attracts unwanted and dangerous vermin.
Exception to this policy is the use of approved bird and squirrel feeders.
The managements requests that resi-dents be mindful that leaving food scraps around the exterior of the build-ing invites rodents such as mice, rats,
All You Need to Know About Voting in Peoria
Residents Reminded Don’t Feed the Animals snakes and other undesirable and dis-ease-carrying animals. The management has recently seen vermin feeding from food scraps left in the yard, specifically, rats. They are responsible for the transmission of many diseases, according to pest re-moval experts from Ardvark. Their feeding habits are destructive, and their nesting behaviors can compro-mise the structure of a buildings. For questions, see Terry Cunefare.
