MALAY CULTUREFEST 2014In celebration of the arts and culture of the Malays, the Malay Heritage Centre (MHC) will be organising a 3-week long Malay CultureFest that introduces a wonderful mix of traditional and contemporary programmes by local and regional performers! The festival, which marks the 2nd anniversary of the re-opening of the centre,

will allow visitors to choose from and experience a multitude of Malay cultural expressions - from the passive witnessing, to the sensory and the participatory.

In conjunction with the festival, MHC will also offer free entry for all visitors to its permanent galleries and also its new special exhibition, Budi Daya.

LAUNCH CEREMONY OF MALAY CULTUREFEST & BUDI DAYA EXHIBITIONJoin us for the launch of our Malay CultureFest 2014 and Budi Daya special exhibition and experience a musical journey entitled “The Rhythms of the Nusantara” which will trace the beats and songs of Java, Minangkabau, Terengganu and the Johor Riau region, thus highlighting the diversity of Singapore Malays.

GHAZAL OF THE OCEAN LOVEThis year, MHC is paying tribute to Ghazal’s very own ‘wailing nightingale’, the songstress Rosiah Chik, who voice resonated through the airwaves in the 60s and 70s with love poems, syair, gurindam which embodies Ghazal music. Expect a modern twist to classical ghazal with improvisations from the ‘Arkestra’ and traditional instruments such as the gambus and tabla.

FENOMENA(1990) | THURSDAY, 23 OCTOBERIn Malay, without English subtitles.In Fenomena, we follow the story of Isabella, a girl who returned from London to Terengganu, Malaysia. Suffering from a mysterious illness and diagnosed with only 6 more months to live, Isabella was determined to find a cure. Her search brought her back to Bukit Besi, where her father’s ex-gardener, Pak Labib, who is also a traditional healer, lives. Would Isabella be able to find her the cure to her mysterious illness?

BUNOHAN(2012) | FRIDAY, 24 OCTOBERIn Malay, with English subtitles.Bunohan tells the tragic story of three estranged brothers, Bakar, Adil and Ilham. Set in the rural village of Bunohan, Ilham is hired to kill Adil who is on the run after escaping from an illegal kickboxing tournament. Bakar, a seemingly pious and filial son returns back to the village with a dark agenda as he tries to convince their ailing father to sell their land. In this village, fate has brought the three brothers together once again as they struggle with their own desires and dark past.

SILAT SHOWCASEJoin us as NTU’s Silat Club present to us a special showcase on the art of silat. The showcase, which includes a synchronized trio demonstration, will also have an interactive portion where visitors get to learn some silat moves.

KUDA KEPANG SHOWCASEThe kuda kepang is a uniquely Javanese activity which usually accompanies weddings or coming of age rituals. However, the form can also be practiced on its own as a showcase of human physic and as a death defying spectacle.

CERITA HIKAYAT AGUS NUR AMAL & WAYANG BEBER*Young visitors and families can participate in this interactive story telling programme by Agus Nur Amal, which merges traditional storytelling with the use of found items and props. To pair with Agus Nur Amal’s storytelling is a collaboration between Ethnic Shadows and Dani Iswardana. The collaboration introduces a fascinating story telling genre, which utilises a pictured scroll.A Budi Daya exhibition programme.

NEIGHBOURHOOD SKETCHES: LANGKAH NADA KITANeighbourhood sketches presents to you a showcase of traditional Malay music in Singapore. This month, we pay tribute to Malay music icons such as the famous P. Ramlee, Hamzah Dolmat, Wandly Yazid, Zubir Said and many more!

ULEK MAYANG SHOWCASEUlek Mayang is ritualised dance performance that is usually held during harvest or prior to fishing season. This folk performance and song can today be found in film and pop music but the original form is still performed in the rural parts of Terengganu.

To care for these old artefacts can be a trying task for those unfamiliar with the processes and materials. SACRED SIRIH: TRADITIONS & SYMBOLISM IN THE MALAY WORLDThe talk is about the culture behind the objects. We will also trace a path through time. How did the simple practice of chewing betel leaf become a central meme of Nusantaran civilisation? While sirih chewing is generally no longer practised in urban settings, we continue to celebrate not just the ornate receptacles, but also their medicinal properties and their role in traditional wedding ceremonies.A Budi Daya exhibition programme.

BUDI DAYA SPECIAL EXHIBITIONShowcasing artefacts alongside contemporary art, Budi Daya explores the value and meaning of ‘culture’ from the Malay perspective. Budaya, the Malay word for ‘culture’, extends into the concepts of budi and daya as expressed in the exhibition title. Budi originates from the Sanskrit buddhi, meaning ‘intellect’ or ‘wisdom’, but when adapted into the Malay language, has expanded to include ‘ethics’ and ‘graciousness’. Daya refers to a person’s or community’s abilities, skills and capacities.

Taken together, they express the notion of enacting budi in thought, emotion, speech and conduct which are held up as prized virtues. The multi-layered exhibition will feature 57 artefacts drawn from the National Collection and private loans as well as 18 new commissions, performances and existing works by artists from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia and Vietnam.

GUNUNGANOne of the most distinctive theatrical forms which continues to be practised throughout the Nusantara is the wayang kulit or shadow puppet theatre. This ancient form has existed for at least 800 years. It features two main traditions, one originating from the island of Java in the south and the other from Kelantan along the northeast coast of the Malay Peninsula. Traditional wayang kulit draws mainly from the Indian legends of Ramayana and Mahabharata. Aside from stock characters, a key element of wayang kulit is the kekayon or gunungan as it is named in the Javanese tradition, or the pokok beringin in the Kelantanese tradition.

Despite aesthetic differences, both the gunungan and pokok beringin (hereafter, referred to as gunungan) share similar functions and symbolism.

ABOUT THE GUNUNGAN

The ultimate goal, nirvana (enlightenment and freedom from rebirth), is symbolised by the tundjung flower (water lily) blossom at the tip.

Snake wound round the trunk with its head tilted to the right represents navigating a treacherous, meandering path in order to do good.

Closed building can be understood as female, with tree as male. United, they form life.

Overall shape of a mountain(Mount Meru)

Tree forks out into four sections representing the four elements and the four cardinal points.

Giants (Raksasas) guard the gateway (gapura) to our spiritual temple.

Animals representative of the lower order of creation (earthly desires), with birds symbolising man as God’s highest creation.

PUBLIC LECTURE SERIESMalay Heritage Centre’s (MHC’s) Public Lecture Series is an annual lecture series which promote a fuller understanding of Malay heritage and culture in relation to topics foregrounded in MHC’s permanent galleries. The lectures range from academic talks to community forums in line with MHC’s annual themes and features speakers drawn from the academic, community and cultural circles. The upcoming cycle will revolve around this year’s theme on Nilai or Values.

Understanding The Notion of “Budi” in Malay Culture: What It Means and Why It Matters?

A culture is a social system that shares a set of common values. It influences our expectations of what is appropriate or inappropriate. Whereas some values can be considered universal, other values are considered culture-dependent. In the context of Malay culture, one of the key common values is the notion known as “budi”. This paper tries to address the notion of “budi” and why it matters in our society. Among the issues discussed are “budi and skill”, “budi and success” and “budi as moral and/or intellectual virtues”.

LINTAS NUSANTARA 2014: KEMBARA MELAYU-JAWAReturning for the third time, Lintas Nusantara will delve into the foundation of Classical Malay Dance which resonates across the Malay regions of Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. Watch dancers from Indonesia and Singapore collaborate to present Srimpi Pendelori and

other dance forms from North Sumatra, South Sulawesi and Yogyakarta.

About Guntur Mataram Dance Company (GMDC)Guntur Mataram Dance Company (GMDC) was founded in 2004 in the Special Region of Yogyakarta by a group of artists that include the late RM Irawan; Koko Sudaarmaji; Saryono, and is currently involved in a variety of activities such as joint exercises; collaborative performances; festivals and others.

Officially re-opened by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in September 2012, the Malay Heritage Centre (MHC) showcases the history, culture and contributions of the Malay community within the context of Singapore’s history and multi-cultural society.

MHC’s permanent galleries focus on the history of Kampong Gelam and showcase an interesting collecting of artefacts from the National Collection

and the Malay community. Through its exhibitions and programmes, the centre aspires to be a vibrant destination of historical and cultural significance for both Singaporeans and international visitors.

MHC is under the management of the National Heritage Board in partnership with The Malay Heritage Foundation.
