Calling all film fans young and old! The Malay Heritage Centre’s Movie Night will return for a second season in June and September. Whether you’re a serious film buff or looking for a weekend activity, join us for a picnic under the stars as we screen classic favourites and new offerings right here on our lawn. So bring your picnic mat, family and friends and soak in the magical movie atmosphere at the Malay Heritage Centre.

Based on a Malay folklore, this moralistic drama tells the story of a single

mother and her two children who live on the verge of starvation. upon catching a

pregnant fish, the mother requests that her children eat the fish but leave the roe

for her. However, her young son, not being able to control his hunger finishes the

roe. upon returning home, the mother is devastated at her children’s selfishness

and decides to end her life by entering the mouth of the legendary man-eating

stone.

Ahmad Albab is a comedy about a rich and arrogant man, Mashood, who married

off his daughter, Mastura, to a poor and simple goat herder named Syawal. Both

lead a simple life until Syawal comes across a cave where he is greeted by a

djinn (genie) protecting a chest of treasures belonging to Ahmad Albab. As the

story unfolds, the couple is blessed with a son whom Mashood names Ahmad

Albab. Syawal realises that the treasure in fact belongs to his son as is God’s will.

His new found wealth never got to his head and he in turn teaches his arrogant

father-in-law a lesson in humility.

Silat, the Malay art of self defence comes in many forms and styles. Silat Bawean, or “Pokolan”, is a style from the Bawean island which uses the sword over the more commonly used keris or parang. in partnership with persatuan Bawean Singapura (Singapore Baweanese Association), this community-curated exhibition highlights the Baweanese community in Singapore whose forefathers hailed from pulau Bawean which lies off the northern coasts of Java and Madura. Here, they are more familiarly known as “Orang Boyan“ (Bawean people). “Laaobe” which means “change”, showcases the heritage and transformation of the local Baweanese community. *All programmes are free and will be conducted in English unless otherwise stated.
