Officially re-opened by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in September 2012, the Malay Heritage Centre (MHC) showcases the history, culture and contributions of the Malay community within the context of Singapore’s history and multi-cultural society.

MHC’s permanent galleries focus on the history of Kampong Gelam and showcase an interesting collection of artefacts from the National Collection and the Malay community. Through its exhibitions and programmes, the centre aspires to be a vibrant destination of historical and cultural significance for both Singaporeans and international visitors.

MHC is under the management of the National Heritage Board in partnership with the Malay Heritage Foundation.

The month of September is a special one for the Malay Heritage Centre (MHC). It marks the first anniversary since our re-opening and the eighth anniversary since the establishment of the centre.

To commemorate the occasion, MHC will be organizing our 2nd Malay CultureFest from 31 August to 22 September 2013. The festival will feature an array of performances such as Bunga Tanjung, Keronchong, Angklung etc. from local cultural groups and schools.

The festival will also showcase regional cultural performers including a Main ‘Teri dance troupe from Kelantan and an orchestra from West Sumatra, as well as workshops and lectures on subjects of Malay culture and customary practices.

In addition, we will be launching our special exhibition on traditional Malay healing practices titled Ilham Alam: Nature and Healing in the Malay World. For more information on our programmes, please check out our calendar at www.malayheritage.sg.

Finally, we would like to thank all parents, teachers and students for participating in our Ter-ba-BOM ! Heritage Hunt in June and we hope that our activities have equipped them with information about Kampong Gelam’s unique heritage.

Public Lecture Series Satu: Malay in Episodes is a series of lectures that explore and promote a deeper understanding of Malay heritage, culture and values. The lectures will feature topics connected to MHC’s permanent galleries as presented by academics, community and cultural leaders.

Adat to the Nusantara communities in Singapore For the first lecture in this year’s series, MHC will be featuring a panel of speakers from the various sub-ethnic communities who will discuss the role of adat in the various suku bangsa (ethnic sub-groups) as well as the significance and challenges in maintaining adat as an identity marker for each of these sub-groups.

The 2004 film also explores how their relationship is often strained because of familial obligations, religious adherence,

TUNANG PAK DUKUNSAT, 14 SEP 2013

Tunang Pak Dukun is a comedy set against the backdrop of a modernised Singapore in the 1960’s, a young medical student goes through a series of amusing encounters with a medicine

man (bomoh) as he tries to win back his girlfriend who is engaged to the village chieftain.

Malay CultureFest 2013 looks at the customary practices and nature of Malay art forms ranging from local performances of Bunga Tanjung to the Kelantanese’s Main ‘Teri dance performance.

Visitors can also look forward to an interesting array of cultural performances from local cultural groups and schools including traditional Malay music showcases and silat performances.

In conjunction with the festival, MHC will also offer free entry for all visitors to its revamped permanent galleries as well as its upcoming special exhibition entitled “Ilham Alam - Nature and Healing of the Malay World ” .

Bina Panggung: a DEMOnSTRaTiOnIn the past, traditional

Malay performances are sometimes

held on platforms or stages called the

panggung. The design of the panggung

often varies depending on the type,

style and scale of performances.

In Kelantan, these traditional

panggungs are still constructed by

villagers using skills and knowledge

passed down through the generations.

Don’t miss the rare opportunity

artisans from Kelantan for this year’s

Malay CultureFest at MHC !

KEROnchOng REciTalKeronchong is one of the

most popular folk music from

the Malay world and shared by the

nation states of Singapore, Malaysia

Yazid Orchestra, this exciting

Neighbourhood Sketches return this year with more vibrant performances along the bustling esplanade of Bussorah Mall!

For the month of July to August, Neighbourhood Sketches will continue to showcase traditional and contemporary Malay musical performances such as the angklung (a musical instrument consisting of two or four bamboo tubes) and the kulingtang (a wooden xylophone from Sulawesi) .

Ilham Alam: Nature and Healing in the Malay World is a special exhibition that examines the ways in which various historical Malay communities have harnessed the bounty of flora and fauna to create both preventive and curative medicines. It also explores the corpus of traditional Malay medicine as a specialised form of local knowledge especially in relation to early Malay conceptualisations of the human body as well as human relationships to the natural environment.

This exhibition is presented in partnership with the Singapore Botanical Gardens and will feature items on loan from Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia (National Library Malaysia) and Negara Muzium Malaysia (National Museum Malaysia) . It will also include a medicinal plant maze as well as showcases of rare 19th century Malay medicinal manuscripts and tools of trade of traditional Malay healers.

Malay Term Description

Here are selective Malay drill commands that you may hear at the upcoming National Day Parade (NDP).

Baris

Sedia/Senang Diri

Rusok Senjata

Hormat Panj i -panj i, Hormat Senjata

Baris refers to a line or row of people or things. In the NDP context, baris refers to the (rows of) contingents.

Sedia means ready or available for action, senang means leisure or ease, and diri means self . In the NDP context, sedia means to “stand at attention” while senang diri means to “stand at ease” .

Rusok literally means ribs while senjata refers to weapons/arms. In the NDP context, rusok senjata means to place the weapon at shoulder position (close to the ribs) .

Hormat means respect or salute while panji-panji means flags or banners. In the NDP context, hormat panji-panji is an instruction to salute the flag/banner while hormat senjata is an instruction to salute the arms.

Baris, Hormat Perdana MenteriHormat Senjata

Perdana menteri (noun) refers to the Prime Minister. In the NDP context, it is an instruction for the contingents to respect (the) Prime Minister and respect (the) arms.

Kawalan Kehormatan Masuk Baris

Kawalan means control or guarded, kehormatan means honour and masuk means enter. In the NDP context, it is an instruction for the Guard of Honour to enter (or to form) a contingent.
