GROUND MAGNETIC AND VLF ELECTROMAGNETIC SURVEYS

SHEDDEN TOWNSHIP COPPER PROSPECT SAULT STE. MARIE MINING DIVISION

ONTARIO

1. INTRODUCTION

On "behalf of Enertex Developments Inc., ground magnetic and

VLF electromagnetic surveys were conducted on ? claims in Shedden

Township, Sault Ste. Marie Mining Division, Ontario. The surveys

were carried out by E.M. Hall, Geophysical Technician, Toronto.

The following report comprises the observations and results of

these surveys. The presentation and interpretation of the data

are provided by Ulla M. Knowles, B.Se., #2206-201 Sherboume St.,

Toronto, Ontario.

2. LOCATION AND ACCESS

The property comprises seven (7) contiguous unpatented min

ing claims (SSM 809518 to SSM 80952*4- inclusive), recorded on Min

ing Claims Map No. M.l109. They are located as follows:

SSM 809518 - 809523 incl.j Con. IVi Lot 9...-....- 6 claims

SSM 809524: Con. IV? Lot 8........................ l claim

Totals 7 claims

The claims are located in the Sault Ste. Marie Mining Division of

Ontario. The property area is approximately 280 acres.

The property lies approximately ^ miles northwest of the town of Spanish located on Highway No. l?. Access to the property is provided by the Beckerton's Logging Road which departs to the north from Highway No. l? at a point 2.5 miles west of the town of Spanish. The logging road passes through the western end of the claim block.

3. HISTORY AND PREVIOUS WORK

The earliest exploration work on the copper showings known as the Black Lake Occurrence in Shedden Township, Ontario, is recorded in 1956. Sam Linton drilled ^ holes totalling 209 feet to test surface showings of chalcopyrite in quartz veins and as disseminations in diabase. No assays are recorded for these holes.

An 80-foot deep shaft has been sunk on the showingi however, no published record of the workings or production exists.

The property was staked by Gradore Mines Ltd. in 1966. Nine diamond drill holes totalling 3.15^ feet tested the surface showings. Assays for copper, silver and gold are recorded.

No additional exploration work is recorded on the property after 196?.

The property was mapped at a scale of l inch to 1/2 mile by J.A. Robertson of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Reso'.;r."es in 1977-

4. GENERAL GEOLOGY

The property is underlain predominantly by Early Precambrian

felsic intrusive rocks comprising granite, granite gneiss and

related rocks. Incorporation of older Keewatin metavolcanic and

metasedimentary rocks occurs in places. These mafic inclusions

are chloritized and amphibolitized. Early Precambrian post grani

tic porphyritic diabase dykes trend northeasterly in the southern

part of the claim group.

Nipissing diabase dykes trending north-northeasterly and west-

northwesterly occur throughout the claim group.

Although no faults are indicated in the area on OGS Map 2315

(J.A. Robertson, 1977)i northeast and northwest trending struc

tures are evident on air photographs of the general area.

5. ECONOMIC GEOLOGY

Chalcopyrite occurs in quartz veins and breccia zones asso

ciated with Nipissing diabase dykes and Early Precambrian mafic

rocks. It is also found as disseminations within both the diabase

and the mafic rocks. Pyrite is associated with the copper mineral

ization.

Diamond drilling by Gradore Mines Ltd. in 1966 intersected

copper mineralization as described above. The best two intersec

tions yielded the following results:

DDK No. Width #Cu

1 5*0 feet 1.4?

2 10.0 feet 0.?

Generally, copper assays yielded less than 0.^ Cu.

Trace amounts of gold up to 0.02 oz./ton were present i how

ever, silver Tvas absent.

6. GROUND GEOPHYSICAL SURVEYS

a. Introduction

Ground magnetic and electromagnetic surveys were carried out

over north-south cut lines *K)0 feet apart extending from an east-

west trending baseline. Magnetic readings were taken every 50 feet

along the lines with a Scintrex fluxgate magnetometer. Electromag

netic readings were taken with a Geonics EM-16 unit at 100-foot

stations along the cross lines.

The following observations are preliminary and subject to

re- evaluation and re- interpretation following geological mapping

of the claim block.

b. Magnetic Survey

The magnetic variation within the claim area is moderate.

Zones of increased magnetism are linear in character and most

likely are traces of Nipissing diabase dykes. These generally

trend northwesterly. In the western end of the grid between

Lines 8+OOW and 12+OOW, the linear magnetic highs terminate ab-

ruptly, possi"bly indicating a north-trending fault in this area.

An intense magnetic anomaly exists on Line *H-OOW at 21+OOS

to 22+OOS. There is a coincident weak VLF anomaly at this loca

tion.

c. VLF Electromagnetic Survey

Several VLF conductors of moderate strength occur in the grid

area.

Three main conductive zones are delineated. These appear to

follow topographical linears and probably represent water filled

shears or faults. They trend west-northwesterly, northeasterly

and north-northeasterly. The latter fault direction is rather

dubious due to the poor coupling between the transmitter and this

direction.

Additional isolated weak to moderate conductors occur across

the gridi however, further interpretation of these zones is not

attempted due to the lack of geological information over the

grid area.

A weak conductor coincident with a strong magnetic anomaly

occurs on Line *H-OOW at 21+50S. This anomaly warrants further

investigation.

7. CONCLUSIONS AND RECCOMENDATIONS

1. Preliminary interpretations of both the magnetic and VLF

electromagnetic surveys has indicated several dykes and major

structures across the grid areaj however, these require verifi

cation by geological mapping of the grid.

2. A coincident VLF electromagnetic and magnetic anomaly

occurs along Line in-OOW between 21+OOS and 22+OOS. This anomaly

warrants further investigation to determine its cause.

3. Previous diamond drilling by Gradore Mines Ltd. indicates

copper mineralization to occur in or associated with mafic rocks

of two ages namely, Early Precambrian unsubdivided metavolcanic

rocks and Nipissing diabase dykes. As the association is unclear,

detailed examination and sampling of exhisting pits exhibiting

the mineralization, is recommended. In addition, particular

attention should be given to delineating mafic metavolcanic

units incorporated in the granite across the grid area.

^ . The mafic metavolcanic units and the Nipissing diabase

dykes should be prospected in detail in search of additional

zones of copper mineralization.

5. A ground radiometric survey should be carried out over

the grid area in conjunction with the mapping survey to receive

an additional 20 days work credit/claim to hold the ground in

good standing.
