Decarbonising the Brazilian Aviation Sector:
analysis of selected strategies
MADACKI, Aletea & SIMÕES, André Felipe
11th Annual International Symposium on Environment Session VIII: Special Topics
Introduction: carbon budget
To keep the prospect of a 2°C world alive in the longer term, global annual GHG emissions have to be curbed to 35 GtCO2e by 2030 and to 22 GtCO2e by 2050.
(“World Bank, 2015. State and trends of carbon pricing”)
Contextualization
Economic growth and social connectivity
$ 2,4 trillion in GDP
35% world trade
60 million jobs
52% tourists
Brazilian air transportation
109% incresase passenger transport
58% increase cargo transport

Carbon tax versus Emission trading (SCE ETS)
Biofuel blends (food versus fuel and land use)
Financial incentives: infrastructure the land-based alternatives
ENVIRONMENT
MRV scheme (State’s laws: SP, RJ, PR, MG)
GHG reductions & compensations
Carbon footprint (indivual’s ticket)
Reduce weight of aircraft (discussion about baggage weigh)
Conclusions
Strategies should consider the balance between people, planet and performance.
In Brazilian context, we highlight thoose strategies: MRV scheme that carries consequences of transparency, mitigation and REED +; Biofuels production, specially working with biofuel blends; Use the land alternative transport to short distances and carbon footprint
