SAN FRANCISCO TREAT: The Dodgers kick off a six-game road
trip with the first of three games against the Giants, who they trail by
4.0 games in the NL West, at AT&T Park. Los Angeles, which is
coming off a 4-2 homestand against the Braves (3-0) and Rockies (1-
2), has gone 3-4 against the Giants this year, including dropping three
of four in San Francisco on their season-opening road trip April 7-10.
Following the weekend series, the Dodgers will conclude the trip with
three games in Arizona Monday-Wednesday.
Tonight marks the Dodgers’ 150th game at AT&T Park. Los
Angeles has a 72-77 record at the stadium, despite outscoring
the Giants, 624-561 in those matchups (Source: Stats, LLC).
KERSH-AWESOME: Clayton Kershaw enters tonight’s start
unbeaten in his last seven starts, going 6-0 with three shutouts and a
0.81 ERA (5 ER/55.2 IP) since May 1. Kershaw has 69 strikeouts
against just three walks during the run, which he hopes to keep going
tonight at AT&T Park, where he has a 9-3 career record with four
shutouts and a 1.23 ERA (16 ER/117.0 IP) in 16 games (15 starts).
Kershaw’s ERA is the lowest all-time mark in the stadium’s history
among starting pitchers:
Lowest ERA at AT&T Park (min. 10 GS)
1. Clayton Kershaw 1.23 (16/117.0)
2. Greg Maddux 2.47
3. Brandon Webb 2.64
4. Madison Bumgarner 2.78
5. Ian Kennedy 2.99
Kershaw leads the Majors in ERA (1.46), innings (92.2) and
WHIP (0.65), while ranking second in strikeouts (110) and
opponents’ batting average (.168) and tying for sixth in wins
(8). His 18.17 strikeout-to-walk ratio remains on pace to
establish a modern record, far outpacing Phil Hughes’ 11.63
mark in 2014.
According to Stats, LLC, tonight’s matchup will be just the
third pre All-Star break meeting between starters with eight or
more wins and an ERA below 2.25 since 2000. The previous
two were Derek Lowe (BOS) vs. Tom Glavine (ATL) on June
16, 2002 and Jake Peavy (SD) vs. Brad Penny (LAD) on June
30, 2007.
HILLTOPPERS: The Dodgers have won 11 of their last 17 games,
mostly thanks to a strong performance by the club’s pitching staff:
Dodger NL Ranks Since May 22
Wins 11 2nd
ERA 2.46 2nd (43 ER/157.0 IP)
>Relievers 1.46 1st (10 ER/61.2 IP)
Opponents’ Avg. .190 1st
Strikeouts 175 1st
WHIP 0.92 1st
Overall, the Dodgers rank fourth in the Majors with a 3.36
team ERA, while placing second with a .216 opponents’
batting average and 562 strikeouts.
Kenley Jansen continues to lead NL relievers with a 0.61
WHIP and has been successful in 16 of 18 save opportunities
this year (T-5th, NL). With 158 career saves, he is just three
saves shy of Eric Gagné’s club record.
ON THE REHAB TRAIL: Brandon McCarthy is expected to make
his first rehab start tomorrow for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga as he
continues to make his way back from Tommy John surgery. McCarthy,
who last pitched in a Major League game April 25, 2015, is expected to
pitch 2.0 innings.
MILESTONE WATCH: Dodger infielder Chase Utley has 33 runs
scored on the season and, with 996 runs in his career, is closing in on
scoring 1,000-career runs, a feat that has been accomplished by just
323 Major Leaguers. Utley’s 33 runs rank third in the National League
among leadoff hitters.
Utley’s .385 batting average (10-for-26) against Johnny
Cueto is tied for the highest mark among active players (min.
20 AB), along with Michael Bourn. Source: Stats, LLC.
DEMANDING A RECOUNT: The latest National League All-Star
balloting update was released Wednesday and Los Angeles players
need the fans’ help, as only one Dodger (Adrián González, 3rd at 1B)
was among the NL vote leaders. Fans can vote for starters a total of 35
times with the 2016 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot online at
Dodgers.com/vote, including a maximum of five valid ballots cast in
any 24-hour period. Voting ends Thursday, June 30 at 8:59 p.m.
Corey Seager wasn’t among the top five vote-getters at
shortstop despite topping NL shortstops in hits, runs and
OPS, while ranking among the position leaders in home runs
(2nd), RBI (2nd), batting average (4th), on-base percentage
(3rd), slugging percentage (2nd) and extra-base hits (2nd).
Since May 7, Seager has posted a .317/.370/.643 slashline,
going 40-for-126 with five doubles, 12 homers and 22 RBI in
32 games. His 12 homers are tied for the NL lead in that span,
while his 40 hits are tied for third and his .643 slugging
percentage places fourth.
Overall, Seager leads the Dodgers in hits (66), runs (39),
doubles (12, T-1st), homers (14) and RBI (35) and were he to
continue his current pace, the 22-year-old would become the
first Dodger rookie and just the sixth MLB rookie to lead his
team in all five categories since 1920 - Source: Stats, LLC.
NEWEST DODGERS: The Dodgers made their first four selections
in the 2016 First-Year Player Draft last night, picking Indian Trail
High School (Kenosha, WI) shortstop Gavin Lux with their first pick
(20th overall), University of Louisville catcher Will Smith with their
second selection in the first round (No. 32nd overall, compensation
pick for Zack Greinke), Vanderbilt University right-handed pitcher
Jordan Sheffield in Compensation Round A (No. 36 overall,
compensation pick for Kyle Funkhouser) and Santa Clara University
right-handed pitcher Mitchell White in the second round.
Lux, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound left-handed hitting shortstop, hit
.531 (43-for-81) with six home runs, 10 doubles, four triples,
31 RBI and 23 stolen bases this spring to earn Gatorade State
player of the year honors for Wisconsin.
Smith became the first catcher to be drafted by the Dodgers in
the first round since Paul Konerko in 1994 following a
breakout junior season, where he hit .380 (57-for-150) with
eight doubles, seven home runs and 43 RBI in 53 games,
while posting a .476 on-base percentage and a .573 slugging
percentage.
The draft continued today with rounds 3-10 and will conclude
on Saturday with the final 30 rounds.
