Editorial

Welcome to the September edition. I’ve just been on a walk through the countryside with some local villagers. It makes you realise what a lovely part of the world we live in.

On a personal note this issue is my fifth anniversary of editing the Link. Thanks for keeping reading.

This month’s centre pages are devoted to a long time supporter of the Link, Petra Jewellery.

Hopefully you’ve all sorted out your entries for the Sherfield Show on the 6th September. If not there's still time, just.

St Leonard’s extension is even closer to completion on p23.

Lots of events this month. Just a couple of the highlights are:

One of my favourites, the beer festival is on the 27th see p15.

Last night of the Proms on the 13th is on p 44,

and many more...

We’ve got all the usual village community reports too.

I’m handing over to Jane to edit next month’s Link so keep the articles and potential cover photos coming in. This month’s cover of late summer sky over Stratfield Turgis is by Nikki Rimmer.

Don’t forget all you Stratfield Saye readers. We need help delivering the link. Get in touch if you can spare half an hour a month.

Expectations and Disappointment

As I write this in July I am aware that many will have had their annual holidays before they read it. Were they great times of fun and sunshine or were they times of disappointment because it wasn’t warm enough, or Mum and Dad went where they wanted and the

children had wanted to go elsewhere or vice versa?

If you were a Brazilian football supporter, then your expectations for the World Cup of 2014 certainly ended in disappointment. Surely you thought Brazil must win the World Cup. They thought it was a certainty, being played in your own country and with some of the best players in the world being Brazilian. For any Brazilian it was not just that they had not won but the total shock of what happened; for most

of us it was indeed unbelievable.

Perhaps you felt like that when the decision was announced that we were not having a new priest after the interviews in June. So the ministry team have met again, planning who does what through until January 2015. The post will be advertised in September and the parish representatives will meet to choose who is shortlisted and

appointed later this year.

If you were one of the apostles who had followed Jesus for three years then the disappointment of his arrest and crucifixion must have been devastating and God’s plan was one which they found quite bewildering. However, this small group spread the truth that Jesus had risen from the dead and within a very short time Christianity had

grown and spread throughout what was then the whole world.

So trust in God and ask him in our prayers for our representatives to be given God’s guidance and wisdom so that we shall not be

disappointed next time.

STRATFIELD SAYE RESIDENTS There is an urgent need for more volunteers to deliver the monthly

Loddon Valley Link around the Parish.

Some areas do not have a house delivery anymore &

others may soon follow suit if no more volunteers are

forthcoming especially when the present volunteers are

away on holiday.

It would be a shame if they were only available at

collection points.

So please contact me and offer your services as it is so important for

the rural areas to keep in touch!!! [email protected]

Church Extension—Completion is in sight!

The St. Leonard’s PCC has now taken over the building from the contractors, Kierish Development Ltd, who have presented us with a first class building. The toilets are fitted out, the hall is ready for use and we have just received the good news that Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council have awarded us a grant to complete the building. The pictures below show the Church Room looking towards the west, and the Bishop of Winchester unveiling the

dedication plaque on July 27th.

Left: The west side of the ex-tension. The trees on the right of the picture are due to come down, while the foreground will

be grassed over.

Right: An 18th century grave stone elevated to be flush with the path on the south side of the extension. The design of the extension took this partially hid-den grave stone into account, making it into an attractive fea-

ture.

Prayers for the month.

These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth to each other, and render true and sound judgment in your courts; do not plot evil

against your neighbour, and do not love to swear falsely.

Zechariah 8 :16 &1 7 NIV

Prayer for the Month.

Living God, you have taught us through Jesus that our neighbours are not just those who live next door, or those who live nearby, but everyone, everywhere. We pray for the victims of injustice, those who live in poverty or face starvation, or are homeless, or are suffering from some natural disaster. Lord we ask that you teach us to respond and reach out to our troubled divided world, recognising the call of our neighbour. Help us to ensure that love triumphs over hatred, goodness over evil and peace over war. May the time come when as

individuals and as nations we may live together as neighbours.

We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

Prayer Points for September

Pray for the children as they return to school in September, for those who are changing schools and for those who are moving to higher

education, calm their fears and help them to trust in you

Pray for all unsure of their future, worried by the problems facing our

country, fearful for the future and for their jobs and their families.

Pray for the people of Syria and Iraq and for the people of Israel and Gaza. Bring an end to killing and conflict and bring peace to these

divided countries.

Pray for world leaders at this time of anxieties, worries and uncertainty about the future. May they be able to work together to bring peace

and succour to all.

Celebrating New Beginnings at Petra

Jewellers

Picture the scene… a handsome, young British Army Officer sweeps you off your feet in the Austrian Alps bringing you back to the UK to settle and start a family? You have no money and speak no English but you do have a skill in making beautiful things out of precious

metal.

I was four in 1979 when my mum, Petra started our family jewelry business at Viables Craft Centre in Basingstoke. She had completed her

Goldsmith apprenticeship in Germany, top of the class, and had nothing more than her tools and characteristically high German standards to create the foundations of

the business that would flourish, 35 years on.

After my time fulfilling personal goals in the army, as an engineer and starting a family, I too wanted to follow my creative urge to earn a

living as an ‘artist’.

And now, I’m Mitch ‘The Jeweller’, Director and Chief Designer at Petra Jewellery. I’m delighted that after 35 years we’re still coming up with exciting, fresh ideas to offer more than just run of the mill high

street jewellery.

Ironically I’ve just shared the stage at a large UK business convention with the infamous Gerald Ratner, a man for whom I have the utmost respect for dominating the British jewellery market in the 1980s. His famous speech in 1991 where he used the word ‘crap’ to describe his

own products was a major turning point for Petra Jewellery.

Page 31

Mum says, “Thanks to that speech, people realised there are different qualities of gold and that lightweight jewellery just doesn’t

last very long – it’s a false investment.”

We know how sentimentally attached our customers get to their jewellery. Most items evoke a particular memory and they do expect

their designs to last a lifetime – and beyond.

Our ‘bread and butter’ business has moved on from pure retailing. We’re now creating bespoke pieces by remodeling old gold and making it into

something uniquely new.

A wonderful lady called Val Standfield visited the shop recently. She brought in her jewellery box and as she had accumulated quite a

collection it took us a while to sort through it all.

Val wanted to consolidate her jewellery collection to a few modern designs that she’ll love and wear regularly. We also saved some of her chains and cleaned them up to use for her new pendant

designs, which saved her a substantial sum too.

Val commented, “I can’t believe how Mitch and her team have transformed my old jewellery. I could even off-set selling the leftovers we didn’t

use against the cost of having things made!”

Everything we hand make is uniquely designed from initial sketches through to the finished product and it’s solid gold so will last for generations. We can even add some really special touches like

personal engraving or precious stones.

So, after 35 years of running Petra Jewellery locally, we’re pleased to announce the launch of this brand new nationwide service, My Gold Memories, enabling you to celebrate new beginnings and transform your old gold into

something brand new.

Go have a rummage in your jewellery box!

See you soon!

MOTHER & TODDLER GROUP

Wild Child is a new mother & toddlers group starting up at the hall which

encourages an enjoyment of outdoor play and nature. The sessions will be

led by Angela, a trained Ecologist and mum of two. Each session will begin

and end at the Main Hall and will involve some outdoor fun on the village

green. There will be games, songs, stories and much more. Sessions will

run Monday mornings 10-11am from October 6th. Come dressed for the

outdoors. Tea/coffee/(and towels!) will be provided. Sessions will be £4.50

pay as you go - no booking required. The sessions will be suitable for 6

month - 5 year olds (all children must be accompanied). For more

information call Angela on 07812350925.

THE HALL GARDEN

The Village Hall Management Committee is very grateful to Roger Rivers for

all his hard work in tending the Hall garden. The garden, which is fully

enclosed, has lovely views over the Village Green, is ideal for hiring out for

parties and wedding receptions, and is also very important to the Happy

Faces Nursery.

NEW NOTICEBOARD

The Noticeboard mounted on the front of the hall cannot be read without

crossing the car park, so we will shortly be installing an additional

noticeboard by the front wall which can be easily read from the pavement. .

Buddhism Philosophy - A way of life

The essential message of Buddhism is that anyone anywhere, no matter how troubled the times, can transform their circumstances, achieve total victory and attain a state of absolute happiness- in which

life itself is a joy – in the place where they are right now.

We were not born into this world to suffer and be miserable. We were born to be happy and savour true joy, never allowing any suffering or

misfortune to defeat us.

Stratfield Turgis Summer Walk.

The weather was beautiful for the Stratfield Turgis Summer 2014 village walk. This took a

different format allowing for 2 shortish loops with a picnic in the middle. The walk took us from the old centre of Stratfield Turgis across fields to the recreation ground and into the pastures of Hartley Wespall. Crossing back through Spanish Green with its thatched cottages, over the A33 and into the harvested arable crops. It was interesting to contrast the different countryside on either side of the A33. Eventually we wound up back at the churchyard for lunch by the

river.

We were privileged to have John Goring with us, a long term resident of the area. He kept us entertained with snippets of history from the surroundings. His grand parents are buried in Stratfield Turgis churchyard and it was fascinating to find the actual graves and

headstones.

After lunch we headed off along the bridleway beside the river. passing the weir, and looped through the grounds of Stratfield Saye House (with

kind permission from Stratfield Saye Estate). The Wellingtonia Avenue was beautiful and led us to the monument to the first duke commemorating the planting of a Cedar of Lebanon tree when he first arrived in 1819. We followed the track back past St Mary's church where we had a little detour to admire the interior of the

church. A lovely time was had by all.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, NWR nationally decided to have ‘War and Peace’ as their theme for this year and produced a book list. This involved choosing one of six books for us all to read and discuss. The book most of us voted for was ‘My Dear I Wanted to Tell You’ by Louisa Young. The author is the granddaughter of Kathleen Scott, widow of Captain Scott of the Antarctic, although he was not Louisa’s grandfather as Kathleen was married before. Kathleen was a sculptor and during the Great War she worked with the pioneer plastic surgeon Major Harold Gillies, a New Zealander army doctor, in Sidcup, Kent. She made clay models and casts of the injured faces of young soldiers. Whilst researching this, Louisa came up with the idea for her novel which tells the story of Riley and Nadine. By chance they meet as children in London and become friends, but Riley is working class and Nadine is middle class, which when they were young was not a problem, but as they grew up and fell in love, became unacceptable to Nadine’s snobbish mother. When the war started in 1914, Riley signed up for the duration of the war – he didn’t want to sign up for a whole year! Riley, an intelligent lad, soon progressed up the ranks to Captain, encouraged by his superior officer, Peter Locke. Despite the opposition of her family, Nadine kept in touch with Riley and became a VAD nurse. They corresponded until she received a note informing her that Riley has sustained a slight wound and is being treated, promising to write with further news. Meanwhile Peter Locke suffered from acute stress and alcoholism and his wife Julia, obsessed with her looks, struggled to understand the impact that the war had on her husband. She had a son, but soon descended into a depressive state. Rose, Peter’s unmarried cousin, who lived with Julia at the start of the war, left to become a nurse and worked with Major Gillies. The book goes into great detail about the terrible facial injuries of wounded soldiers and how, over time and many operations, their faces were gradually rebuilt. We all enjoyed this book immensely. It was a haunting story which stayed with us. All the characters were interesting and it was fascinating to learn about the work of Major Gillies, who dealt with thousands of cases of jaw and facial mutilation during the war, but did not become well-known until he worked on severely burnt people in Copenhagen in 1924. He was knighted in 1930 and later worked at Park Prewett Hospital, Basingstoke. Our next meeting will be a play reading.

Our Meeting in August was opened by another of our Presidents, Doris L’Enfant on a lovely summer

afternoon.

Jerusalem was sung, and during the course of the Business Meeting, Doris informed us that the Committee of the Loddon Group of WI’s, to which we belong, have a project to produce a special table cloth for their Meetings for the WI Centenary year in 2015. They would like each WI in the Group to complete a panel in any medium and design, but appropriate to the individual WI’s. Val mentioned a possible trip to Highcliffe Castle in October and Doris thanked all those who had

provided WW1 and WW2 memorabilia for us to peruse.

The Business part of the Meeting was followed by a very interesting and comprehensive talk illustrated with slides by Edward Dixon – “Women on the Home Front in the Great War”. He explained that, at the beginning of the war, men rushed to enlist but as the news of the casualties filtered through, enthusiasm waned and the Government insisted that women must help. He went on to say that the class system was very much in evidence then and dictated what work women did – Upper and Middle Classes – nursing and like occupations – Lower Classes – working in factories, on shell production (195.7 million in WW1) and on the land. A great debt was

owed to the women “who kept the country going”.

A delicious tea provided by the committee followed and the raffle was

drawn.

NEXT MEETING: WEDNESDAY 3RD SEPTEMBER AT 2 P.M. IN

SHERFIELD VILLAGE HALL.

A talk will be given by Mark Watts – “WINCHESTER PRISON – PAST

AND PRESENT”

The August meeting was an interesting talk given by Steve and Pauline

from Naomi House and Jack's Place which are hospices for children and

young adults. Naomi House was opened in 1997, the idea of a local doctor

who had looked after a child with a life limiting illness. The money was

raised by the local communities to build the hospice. Jacks Place was

opened in 2010 and offers the same services as Naomi House for young

adults from age 18 years where they can have privacy, dignity and

independence. There is also Naomi House at Home where families can

have help at home if they do not wish to visit for respite or during an

emergency situation.

They look after families from Central Southern England and need £7 million

per year to provide their services. Steve and Pauline showed us photos of

the hospices. At present they are raising money for the Caterpillar appeal

which is for the refurbishment of Naomi House and £4 million is the amount

needed.

After the talk the members were able to buy fund raising items if they

wished that Steve and Pauline had brought with them. We concluded with

the business part of the meeting tea, biscuits and the raffle
