Mum, when I grow up I want to be Pope!”
As I write 115 Roman Catholic cardinals are meeting in the Sistine Chapel in Rome to choose a new Pope. The Church of England, being linked with the State, does it differently. A body called The Crown’s Nomination Commission makes recommendations to the Prime Minister. Odd to think that bishops are appointed by a politician!
A strange business really but essentially Christians believe that if we look to God in faith and trust He will guide us, through his Holy Spirit, to choose the person he wants for the task. That’s all very well for those ‘big guns’ up there but what about little old ordinary you and me and the bloke in the street, doesn’t he or she get any guidance? Well, actually, yes, if we want it.
Christian guidance isn’t about favouritism, voices, visions, or dreams, yet some amazing things can happen and some people experience God’s guidance in startling ways. For most of us God works through the ordinary stuff of life, which I think makes life more interesting. Like every Christian, I believe that God guides me but at no time have I felt forced in any way to take a specific course of action. I believe that God’s guidance can come to us in any situation but we are left to respond. The only pre-requisite is a willingness to trust Him and listen to Him.
How do you tackle those big or small issues in your life? How about being still and consciously bringing your situation, thoughts, worries and options to God and asking him to guide you? For me, this simple process has often resulted in an obvious course of action but not always, so then of course we have to make decisions and choices. Sometimes it means patiently waiting.
A man was drowning at sea. “God rescue me,” he prayed. Along came a lifeboat and a helicopter but he sent them away saying: “God’s going to rescue me!” He drowned and said to God, “Why didn’t you answer my prayer?” “But I did, I sent you a lifeboat and a helicopter and you turned them away.”
I think that God is working in everybody's life, but sometimes we just don’t stop to notice. “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures: he leads me beside still waters... for his name's sake.” Psalm 23

Editorial
As this month’s edition went to press winter was very much still with us, with cold weather and snow still predominating. I hope by the time you get your copy of the Link spring will truly have begun and that you are able to get out in the garden. Gardening is a theme this month, with hints and tips from Jane Jordan (p.43), a popular local garden once again holding an Open Day under the National Gardens Scheme (p.27) and an invitation to particpate in Basingstoke in Bloom, a competition focusing on gardening and outdoor photography (p.53).
Our featured local business this month is Go Easy Travel (pp. 30-31). We also start a series on well-known composers who, in addition to making their mark with their music, are also sadly remembered for having met unfortunate deaths (p.18). If you have any suggestions for topics you would like to see featured, or any other suggestions about the magazine, please let us know. Comments can be sent to:

The late John Dodd
Even those who are new to the village of Sherfield will be aware of The Garage situated next to The Shop. John’s family ran the local garage (where the Salon now is) for many years and long after his retirement he continued to be involved with village matters. John’s funeral at St Leonard’s Church was packed with friends and family and he will be greatly missed. The collection in memory of John exceeded £800 and money is still coming in.
Simon and Jonathan have asked me to pass on thanks to all who were involved in arranging and leading John’s service and the collection will be shared between St Michael’s Hospice and the Church Extension Fund to provide toilets and facilities.
We are hoping that an article about John and his family links with Sherfield will be published in the magazine later in the year.

Peter, the disciple who denied Jesus, and then became the leader of the apostles and spoke about the events of the first Easter
“Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said “Brothers, what shall we do?”. Peter replied, “repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins Acts 2: 36 - 38
Prayer for the Month.
Loving God, we give you thanks for the joy of Easter when we can praise you for the day which changes the way we think, changes the way we live, which changes everything. We pray for change in the world especially where there is discord and strife. At this Easter time we pray for help for the poor, the homeless, the sick and the hungry, for the victims of war and for divided communities. Living God, may the truth of Easter break into each and every one of these situations bringing hope, help and healing, comfort and courage, faith and freedom, love and life - the changes that you alone can bring. Lord of life, hear our prayer.
In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
Prayer Points for April
Give thanks for the joy of the Easter and the many who celebrated it in all our churches.
Pray for the future of Syria and Afghanistan that the violence may end and peace be finally established.
Pray for our service people in Afghanistan spending yet another holiday time away from their families
In a month when many marriages take place, pray for all who are to be married this month and for all whose anniversaries fall in this month. May their lives be guided by your Holy Spirit.
Pray for the sick known to you that they may know God’s peace.
Pray for those who are distressed by the financial crisis which is causing their future to be so uncertain.
Give thanks for the Easter message that “the Lord is Risen, indeed” and give thanks also for the beauty of spring, confirming God’ faithfulness.

Death by (musical) misadventure
Part 1
By Mike Abrams
Jean-Baptiste Lully - 28 November, 1632 - 22 March, 1687 Performance styles change inevitably change over time, and when it comes to conducting an orchestra back in the days of the Baroque period, the style was to give the beat by banging a large stick on the floor of the stage. This led to a bizarre end to the life of Lully. Born Giovanni Battista Lulli in Florence, Lully is considered the chief master of the French baroque style, having became a French subject in 1661. He was skilled as a violinist, dancer, choreographer, and composer, who joined the court of Louis XIV in 1652. He played a significant role in establishing the general direction ballet would follow for the next century. Supported and admired by Louis XIV, Lully often cast the king in his ballets. The title of Sun King for the French monarch originated in Louis XIV's role in Lully's Ballet de la Nuit (1653) where, in one part of the ballet, he wore a costume representing the sun. The fourteen year old Louis XIV in fact danced five different roles in this 12-hour OTT ballet. In the years which followed, Lully’s ballet music made hime indispensable to the Sun King. Lully became the director of the Royal Opera in 1672, and thereafter wrote a series of large-scale works for them to perform. In 1687, Louis XIV underwent surgery, and a concert was arranged to celebrate and give thanks for his recovery. While conducting his Te Deum in this concert, Lully struck his toe with his conducting stick, but carried on with the show despite the pain. The toe developed an abscess which became gangrenous: the Court Surgeon wanted to amputate the toe, but Lully refused. This was a fatal decision, since the gangrene spread rapidly and led to his death on 22 March, 1687, two months after the blow to the toe. Ouch!

Update from Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council
John Dodd
The Parish Council was very saddened to learn of the death of John Dodd, a former long serving Parish Councillor and Chairman. John's friends, family and colleagues packed St Leonard's church on March 5th for a very moving service to celebrate John's life and interests and to pay tribute to his many achievements. He was a hard-working and dedicated man who gave up his time for the community. Our thoughts are with John's family and friends at this sad time.
Trees in our Conservation Area
Deliberately destroying a tree in a conservation area, damaging it in a manner likely to destroy it, or causing or permitting such work, will make you liable to a fine. The conservation area in Sherfield on Loddon covers a large proportion of the village. You must submit a Notice of Intent to the Borough Council before carrying out any tree work (including pruning) at least six weeks before any work starts to give the authority an opportunity to consider the best option for the care of the tree and its environment. A map of the conservation area, together with a Notice of Intent application form, can be found by visiting the Environment & Planning section (Conservation) of Basingstoke & Deane’s website.
Parish Council Website We are hoping to have the new website up and running this month. Any constructive comments or ideas for more content will be most welcome. You can use the “contact us” page at

“Get on yer bike!”
Next month, on 21st May, I will be embarking on my fund raising cycle-ride to help raise money for the much needed extension at St Leonard’s Church. I will be travelling with a retired Colonel and retired Company Sergeant Major in the Marines, so I’ll have to behave myself. Each of us is being sponsored for a different charity and we shall be riding on Brompton fold-up bicycles.
We depart by Eurostar on 21st May, get off the TJV at Bordeaux and then it’s cycling all the way south, over the Pyrenees and west across the plains and mountains of northern Spain to Santiago de Compostella. The journey is 700 miles and if you’d like to sponsor me I’m sure it will provide much needed motivation when muscles ache and I dream of being back home in an armchair.
Cheques, made out to ‘St Leonard’s Business Account’’, can be given to Dan Farrow (Treasurer). Contact Dan on 01256 882680. We hope to set up and on-line giving scheme as well.
Thank you for your encouragement and support.

A view from the Borough
Council
Councillor Ranil Jayawardena
I am pleased to report that the Local Plan now says that no new homes will be built in the villages of Bramley and Sherfield. We’ve had more development than most over the last ten years so, while national rules say that homes have to be built, we have protected our villages by proposing that any homes in our part of the Borough should be put on the edge of Basingstoke.
Of particular interest to Sherfield will be the removal of Redlands from the Local Plan. However, Razor’s Farm and Cufaude Farm have been included. These developments will draw on Chineham, not Sherfield or Bramley. I believe we must ensure that the Chineham area receives a significant infrastructure boost to education (new school or school extension), roads (improved junctions and a new link road from Hanmore Road to the A33) - and the Cabinet decision was that infrastructure investment should come before or alongside any new developments, not after.
While I am pleased that my Cabinet colleagues have recognised the particular local issues faced by Sherfield and Bramley, there is still more to be done - to redress existing infrastructure issues, to fight developer-led planning and to ensure that infrastructure comes before development in the future. However, this Local Plan means no homes in the villages of Sherfield and Bramley, and it protects us from top-down, large-scale development in our villages. As part of the deal is to increase the number of homes to be built in Whitchurch and Overton (which have had less than the average amount of development over the last ten years) there is some opposition - some people would rather more houses were built here. I would call on Sherfield and Bramley residents and Councillors to support this allocation — it’s a fair deal for us. .
As ever, a full update on my work is online (tellRanil.com) and, if I can help in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Bramley & Sherfield on Loddon
Speed Enforcement: there is now a new system where the officer at the scene issues a form (T60) to the motorist; the second copy goes to a dept who decide the course of action to be taken, with the evidence provided. In February colleagues from the Road Policing Unit joined beat officers for a morning of speed enforcement.
Vehicle Crime: there were 3 incidents of vehicle crime in February: two were incidents where light units & bulbs were stolen.
In pursuance of the current prioritising of crime prevention measures and patrols for the theft of heating oil crime prevention pamphlets were circulated by NHW co-ordinators along with details of alarms & cameras. Residents have been informing the beat team when their oil is being delivered; to date there have been no reported thefts.

Good Neighbours
‘Good Neighbours’ is a network of groups across Hampshire whose volunteers are willing to give their time to help in their neighbourhood. Doreen Tosswill started as a member in the 1970s and took over from Sally Brain as the co-ordinator of Sherfield’s ‘Good Neighbours’ about twelve years ago. There are 121 groups in the ‘Good Neighbours Network’ across Hampshire. Over the last year 3,628 volunteers carried out 139,715 tasks. There are 14 members at present from Sherfield Village and Hartley Wespall willing to help you.
You may have seen Doreen’s appeal for new volunteers, to help as drivers, a few months ago. I was one of those new recruits. I am a Baby Boomer! Do you know to which generation you belong? Each generation has a different name. The Silent Generation 1925 – 1945, Baby Boomers 1946 - 1960s, Generation ‘X’ 1970s – 1989, Generation ‘Y’ 1990 - 2008
At the moment our villages are mostly served by volunteers from ‘The Silent Generation’ but if volunteering is to continue, the ‘Baby Boomers’ are the generation who need to get stuck in and offer help. So if you have either retired recently want to keep active or just have some spare time on your hands. Do you have a desire to create social change and want to use your skills? Is this you?
Volunteers need a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) form which has to be updated every 5 years, even if they are simply driving. We have someone in the village who volunteers their help to fill in the forms and sort out the paperwork. Since February 28th 2013, ISA and CRB have been merged to form a single new body - The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) - so there will be new forms to fill in when the old one runs out. All this is to protect and reassure you, should you want help.
If you need help getting from home to an appointment locally, or are willing to become a volunteer, whatever generation, please let Doreen know on 01256 882344.

A NEW SHERFIELD BUSINESS - GOEASY TRAVEL
Goeasy Travel was established in 1999 but is new to Sherfield, having recently moved to Sherdon House next door to Sherdon Estate Agents from Twyford. Issy Wiggins-Turner.is the owner of Goeasy Travel, an independent travel agent founded in 1999, part of the Global Travel Group, one of
the largest independent travel consortiums in the UK “I started the business because I was looking for specialist skiing holidays and discovered I had more expertise than the local travel agents. Plus I seemed to be able to get things done much more quickly!” says Issy . Goeasy travel has grown through online travel bookings and by providing expert travel advice for busy people, offering a dedicated appointment service with 1-2-1 consultations and no interruptions.

Skiing holidays are still an important part of the business, as Issy has skied extensively in Europe and North America (including off-piste heli-skiing). She is also a keen golfer and has personal knowledge of many of the golf courses and resorts of the world.
Weddings abroad are another specialism. Issy herself was married on a beach in Barbados, and has a wealth of information and experience in organising weddings abroad. She can advise on which resorts are offering the best honeymoon deals, as well as which destinations are best to visit for that time of year when the wedding is planned. She also
makes it a rule to visit a new destination somewhere in the world each year, so that she can share the experience with customers. Issy can thus offer advice, tips, ideas and knowledge on when and where to go on holiday, and can also advise on the latest offers to suit all budgets. She enjoys her work, finding it very rewarding to share her experiences with clients to help them plan their holiday or honeymoon to perfection. Award for St Mary’s Stratfield Saye
The St Mary’s Church Stratfield Saye restoration project, completed last year, involved bringing the Church back to its lovely old brickwork by stripping off paint that was trapping moisture into the bricks. Now we are delighted to announce that the project has won an award from the Hampshire and the Islands Historic Churches Trust.
The Corinne Bennett Award, given in memory of the Trust’s founder, is
made to a church the Trust has helped and whose scheme for repairs and improvements is in the opinion of the committee the most interesting or imaginative.
Our Rector, Bob Politt and project manager Geoffrey Preston will be attending the Trust’s AGM at Winchester Cathedral in May to accept the award from the President Dame Mary Fagan.

NWR Report – April 2013
Our February meeting was a discussion about where our grandparents came from. Our first contributor talked about her roots in rural Dorset where her father grew up and her parents lived in the early years of their marriage until moving to Basingstoke in 1959. They lived in one of the famous cottages in Milton Abbas, often used for calendars. Another contributor had family links with Lord Tenterden, who came from humble beginnings but became a barrister and rose to be the first Lord Chief Justice. Sadly her maternal great great-grandmother fell on hard times and had to go into a workhouse. Similarly another member’s great-grandmother gave birth to her third child in a workhouse in the early 1900s after her husband left her to start a new life in Canada. She eventually teamed up with her spinster sister and together they worked all hours making frilly high-necked blouses, which enabled them to live a comfortable life. Our research illustrated the fact that our forebears had largely rural occupations (farm labourers, blacksmiths, millwrights) before moving into the cities to work in factories or offices. One member read moving extracts from a book of letters written by her grandfather from the front during the First World War. Another spoke of her close family life in Romania before the Second World War which came to an abrupt and tragic end in Auschwitz. Our March meeting was on ‘Amazing Women’ in recognition of International Women’s Day. Some of us spoke about women who are alive today and who have achieved something special. Local lady, Marion Cornick set up the Loddon School in 1988 in Wildmoor Lane which specialises in dealing with, and improving the conditions of, severe cases of autistic children. Another fairly local lady, Susanne Enzer, was the first midwife to use reflexology on pregnant women and is now an authority on the subject. After a quiz on prominent women, we listened to the achievements of Evelyn Glennie, the profoundly deaf percussionist, and Professor Jenny Clack, a palaeontologist who changed the way of thinking about how fish evolved when they came out of the water.

FUND RAISING EVENTS On Saturday 9th March, 52 Skidoo really did get “The Joint Jumpin’” at this ‘sell-out’ event with their mix of vintage American jazz. The enthusiastic audience, many of whom added to the decor and atmosphere by dressing as gangsters and molls, enjoyed the gentle humour of the young Harlem Swing trio from Bury in Lancashire and rewarded their impressive musicianship by getting up to dance.
As ever, the funds raised are essential for the Hall. Being a lovely old building, its upkeep is not cheap and renovations need to be done in a sympathetic manner to be in keeping with the structure. As a Charity, the only regular income the Hall has is from its hiring fees so donations and fund raising events are vital to maintain the Hall and carry out further renovation and refurbishments.
The Friends of Sherfield Village Hall hope you will support the next evening fundraising event on Saturday 1st June – Derby Race Night.
VILLAGE DEFIBRILLATOR Just a reminder that the Village now has a defibrillator, a life-saving machine for use in case of a suspected heart attack. It is located in the central porch outside the front of the Village Hall and the unlocked box in which it is stored is alarmed. The machine will talk the user through the process of what to do but to give you an idea of how easy it is to use, you can view a video on the village hall website.

A PLANT FOR ALL SEASONS
By Jane Jordan
In small gardens everything is up close and personal and easily seen. Plants have to earn their keep and perform well throughout the year to justify the space they take up. For me, plants that are star performers don’t just have beautiful flowers, but offer a number of other qualities to continue interest before and after their main flowering period, such as:
Colourful stems – especially in winter? Buds – fluffy, prickly, beautifully
coloured? New spring shoots Leaf shape and colour – deciduous,
evergreen? Leaf texture – rough, smooth, shiny,
hairy? Autumn colour? Decorative seed-heads? Fruits – edible or not? Scent – what sort and at what time of
day? Flowering period – short but sweet, or long and lingering? Last but not least – how resilient is the plant? Is it likely to suffer
from slugs and snails? Get diseases? Lose its shape?
It’s easy to be seduced by a pretty flower in the garden centre, but it’s worth doing a bit of research before you go as this will help identify the star performers, the plants that will perform for your particular conditions (soil, aspect etc.) and those that will work well in combination with plants you already have. Looking at pictures of a plant at different times of the year makes it much easier to see what all that it has to offer and when.
Do be choosy; all plants are not created equal, and performance between plants of the same species can vary a lot. The Award of Garden Merit (AGM) given by the RHS is a useful indicator that a plant will do what it says on the tin, but nothing beats your own research.
In winter, all the interest in these borders is created by the dead and dried stems, leaves and flower heads. Without them, the beds would be flat and bare.
Newly emerged leaves of Ricinus communis give shape, texture and colour before the flowers get going.

A View from the Borough -
Councillor Chris Tomblin
I have nearly completed my first year serving Bramley and Sherfield on Loddon and I admit that most of the time has been spent representing the ward when it comes to the Local Plan. I was able to convey the risks of developing around the incinerator at Redlands, to the various meetings and that all I seek is that we only get the houses we actually need, maintaining the enjoyment of the countryside for all.
The Parish Council is going to set up Neighbourhood Planning so that we can take on board the latest Government thinking, local people can have more say on development, and authorities will be obliged to listen. Sitting on the planning committee at the Borough I see more and more regard paid to village plans when we make our decisions. This will be good for Sherfield.
There has been a major, welcome turnaround to the local plan in a suggestion that no houses should be built at Sherfield on Loddon (Redlands). Instead these houses would be placed in Whitchurch and Overton. Those communities are unhappy about the short notice and lack of consultation in this decision. We will have to see what develops as the Planning and Infrastructure Committee and the Portfolio Holder will have to reconvene to sort out these problems. Sadly it may be premature for Sherfield to feel safe from development unless Manydown is allocated more of the houses that it was purchased for.
Of course Razor’s Farm and Cufaude Farm are still in the mix, now supported by our local Conservatives as the preferred site for housing in our area; Residents may feel that these sites will cause unwelcome traffic through the village and Taylor’s Farm if new residents habitually drive through Bramley and into Sherfield to the A33.
If these sites are developed we will have tough times ahead.......
As ever you can contact me, at home on 880558 or email: - [email protected]

Evergreens Club - reported by May MacQueen
Our speaker for our March meeting was Gerald Merritt from the hospital trust. He gave a very interesting talk on his role as a governor for older people. The role includes doing regular spot checks which includes talking to patients and staff about any complaints and concerns they have These will then be followed up. He also spoke about developments within the the trust which include a mobile MRI scanner and mobile chemotherapy unit to local communities across Hampshire. He then answered questions raised by the members.
The AGM followed and the previous committee were re-elected. Business matters were discussed , followed by tea and biscuits and our raffle. The next meeting is April 8th, when we shall have an Easter Egg raffle.
The Women’s Institute - Reported by Ilene Iles
Reported by Ilene Iles
At the March Meeting our President Dee Bulpitt also acted as Secretary in Val Denny’s absence as she is recovering from her hip operation. The planned trip to Oxford is in doubt as there is not enough support at present to make this viable. Dee encouraged members to come a little earlier to the April Meeting to view the tables and decorations covering the 9 decades of Sherfield W.I.’s existence, and to support Catherine Wright who has started a knitting circle and a book group.
The talk consisted of six stories from Fionnaghal – a teller of traditional tales. She explained that the stories, myths and legends are from Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Hampshire, the British Isles and around the world. Some are true, said to be true and others lost in the mists of time.
