What a jam packed issue! Interesting articles, some

brand new advertisers with a variety of things on

offer as well as just a hint of romance here and there!

Oh yes, and competitions!

If you are a Macc TownMacc TownMacc TownMacc Town fan, don’t miss the feature

on Page 7 …. not only is it a good read, but you can

win a genuine piece of MTFC memorabilia! We are

very happy to have teamed up (no pun intended!!)

with Good Times Creations and the Club to bring

you an article within each issue and other goodies to

win in the months ahead.

You can win some Weight Watchers goodies on

Page 18 and our regular Cash Prize competition is

on Page 36.

Now then, despite what some would have us believe,

there are some great things being done in our town

for our town … We include in particular this month

BarnabyBarnabyBarnabyBarnaby which is being heralded on Page 18 and the

Youth ClubYouth ClubYouth ClubYouth Club, opening soon (see opposite). Please

support them - they’re all volunteers - it’s a great

initiative for our young people which will have a

knock-on effect on the town as a whole. If they’ve

got things to do, they don’t hang around! Being the

mother of a Dung Beatle, I know this …..!!

And if you care about Macclesfield and its future,

please read the information supplied by the WakeWakeWakeWake

Up MaccUp MaccUp MaccUp Macc group on pages 5 and 6. Whether you

agree with the proposed plans or not, if you’ve not

looked at them at all, you can’t complain if you don’t

like the result! And this is the last chance to register

your opinion - do it before 22nd February.

Please use the businesses in the magazine and tellthem where you saw their details. Feel the love on

February 14th (which coincidentally occurs around

the start of the Chinese Year of the Snake … hmm!)

and be nice to your Dad.

The final plans are now in for the huge retail development in Macclesfield towncentre. The plan puts both existing town centre businesses and our uniqueheritage at risk, and make no economic sense at a time when national chains areclosing stores all over the country.

The developers have changed the design of the buildings slightly as a result ofpublic pressure, but the scale and footprint remain the same as in the versionpublicised during 2012. The plans involve:

Building on popular town centre car parks and destroying trees and greenspace, rather than using existing buildings and derelict land.

Creating a new, separate shopping street aimed at national retailers, plus afive-storey department store at the furthest point from the current towncentre.

Building a large multi-storey car park that would dominate the historic ParkGreen Conservation Area, the old Registry Office, the Silk Museum, and theskyline.

The development would turn Macclesfield into a building site for years, with noise, dust, heavy construction traffic and road closures making the town an unpleasantplace to be and harming trade.

To find out more and see what you can do to have yoursay, see next page.

Page 6: Local People Macclesfield February 2013 issue

Why is the Wilson Bowden scheme wrong for Macclesfield?

It can only result in more empty shops, because it doesn’t take account of the fact thatfewer people are shopping in town centres, preferring to shop online or at large out oftown malls. This means few national retailers are setting up new stores in small towns.

It moves activity and car parking away from the top of the town and puts existingbusinesses at risk.

It provides for only five new houses, when Cheshire East say we will need 3,500 and arelooking to build on green belt land.

People will not visit Macclesfield to go to stores found in every other town. They willcome only if the town offers something unique.

The scale, mass and design are not in keeping with Macclesfield’s historic andarchitectural heritage. Instead, the proposed buildings are typical of those seen in failingclone towns across the UK.

ACT NOW. Consultation period ends 22 February. If you don’t want these plans to go ahead, you need to object. But please note that opinionis not enough. To carry any weight, your objection must show why the plans do not complywith planning policies. Our website at wakeupmacc.org.uk gives more information plustemplate objections you can adapt for your own use. If you don’t have internet access, youcan call us on 07400 816272. Individual letters have the most impact, but if you don’t havetime to write in full, you can use the slip below. If you have already sent in a slip from aprevious flyer, please do take the time now to send in a more detailed objection.

To submit your comments you can use the comment facility in the planning section ofwww.cheshireeast.gov.uk or post or hand in your objection to the Chief Planning Officer,Cheshire East , Town Hall, Macclesfield SK10 1DP.—————————————————————————————————————————

Planning Applications 12/1212M & 12/1213M - I wish to object to the Macclesfield towncentre redevelopment proposals. These proposals are not in the economic, social or environ-mental best interests of the town and as such are in direct contravention of the NationalPlanning Policy Framework. In addition, the proposals conflict directly with a number ofpoints in the Macclesfield local plan as adopted by Cheshire East. This states that we mustprotect residential and conservation areas (2.3)(BE3)(BE4), improve despoiled areas (2.3),ensure a high quality of urban design reflecting the character/scale of the town centre (BE1)(BE2), give access to the natural environment (NE18), create good connections between anynew development and the traditional town centre (MTC16), and encourage more towncentre housing (MT19). The current proposals do none of these things.

After theSecond World War, they took on the name thatthey have kept to this very day and playedtheir football in the Cheshire County Leaguefrom the 1946-47 season. Their debut gamewas a 2-0 defeat to Buxton and, apart from aCheshire League Challenge Cup win in 1948,they were largely unsuccessful until the yearsbetween 1951 and 1954, when they wereto win four trophies, including the CheshireLeague title in 1953.The 1960s were to prove far more fruitful andthey were to win three more Cheshire Leaguetitles in a nine year period where they neverfinished lower than 5th position. Get Motivated! We can all feel de-motivated attimes, so if January has passedyou by without starting anyof those New Year resolutions, turn February into the monthyou take some positive steps toregain control.

Trying to achieve all thatyou want in the coming yearmay feel like an impossibletask and it can lead tofeeling totally de-motivated.Motivation is key to ourcreativity, productivity andhappiness. When we aremotivated we feel like wecan take on any challenge, meet any deadline and workthrough any problem toachieve our goal, whetherthat’s personal satisfactionor public recognition for ajob well done. But once de-motivation sets in, then eventhe smallest task can seeminsurmountable.Set small goalsIf you’ve given yourself a biggoal this year, such as losinga large amount of weightor changing jobs, break itinto small, short term goals.Give yourself weekly targets– losing 5lbs or re-writing yourCV - and then congratulateyourself on achieving them. Bydoing this you are building uppositive ‘credits’ in your mind, keeping you going for thefollowing week.Be inspiredRichard Branson has had afew business failures whichhe’s written about in hisautobiographies. But theseset-backs didn’t stop him - he

just tried again. It can be reallyuplifting to read about otherpeople’s successes. Thereare also a lot of self-help andbusiness books availablewhich can help you to thinkabout what you do and don’twant. A good one to start withis the international best-seller,Who Moved My Cheese? (DrSpencer Johnson, Vermilion)Stay focusedDon’t give yourself too manygoals to aim for at once.Focus on one, work out howbest to achieve it (in smallsteps, if needed) and workyour way through it beforestarting on your next goal.Diffusing your energy by tryingto change too many things atonce will just mean you areless likely to keep up yourmotivation. So prioritise, writeyourself a list and start withnumber one.Talk about itA great motivator is otherpeople. If you tell people thatyou’re going to start writingthat novel this month or applyfor the local half marathon, you’re much more likely to doit. Talk to friends, family andwork colleagues - their gentlenudges or encouragementwill help to keep you on track.Putting up little post-it notes toremind yourself of your goals

and why you want to achievethem will help keep youmotivated and on track, too.Reward yourselfFor every achievement, however big or small, rewardyourself - you deserve it.Reject negativethoughtsHow many times do you findyourself saying ‘I can’t do it’,‘it won’t happen’, or ‘it’s toohard’? Negative thoughtscan really bring you down, sogive yourself a buzz word ormantra to repeat immediatelywhen a negative thought popsinto your head. ‘I’m doing it.’Look at the positiveStarting to exercise, cuttingdown on unhealthy food, changing jobs, starting yourown business. None of theseare easy. Accept that there willbe set-backs and bad days orbad weeks. But keep lookingat the positives - what did youmanage to achieve this week,or how are you going to dobetter next week?So plan ahead, have lots ofsmall goals to help you reachyour big goal, accept there willbe set-backs and look at howother people have done whatyou would like to do. And keepgoing - you’re doing great!

10 Easy Ways ToSave Money

Finance

While many people holdnotions of being better withmoney, it’s rare that a practicalaction plan is put together. Here are ten top money-savingtips which are commonly-overlooked and which, overthe course of the year, willhave a drastic impact on yourexpendable income.1. Pausing for ThoughtThe four-day wait works.Any time you’re about tobuy something which isn’t anecessity, listen to that nigglingvoice on your shoulder andwait four days until purchasing.Developing this simple habitrids you of compulsive buyinginclinations and affords youtime to compare prices online.2. Balance Your BankAccountFew people take the time tobalance bank statements. What your bank statementsays you have at the end ofeach month is not the moneythat’s available to spend. Learnto reconcile your accounts andtrack your finances properly.Understanding your financialthroughput properly will helpdevelop positive spendinghabits.3. Resell Your ClutterIt’s frighteningly easy toaccumulate unnecessary andunused products. Survey yourbelongings and unclutter yourhouse and loft by setting up

a Gumtree or eBay account.Rid yourself of these thingsin a way which will make youmoney.4. Transfer Your BalancesIf you have credit card debts, find another credit card offering0% interest for several months, sign up and transfer thebalance over. You can do thisas many times as there arecard companies and it will saveyou a fortune in interest.5. Insurance SwappingPut aside an afternoon to useinsurance comparison sites.Finding cheaper deals onyour car, home, life and otherinsurances will take just acouple of hours and could saveyou hundreds of pounds.6. Mortgage ShoppingWhile you may have beengiven a good deal on yourmortgage initially, shoppingaround for a new mortgagecould save you hundreds oreven thousands of poundsevery year if you find a greatdeal, so spend an afternoonhunting around. Always checkthe small print.7. 0% Interest on PurchasesWhen purchasing newproducts which offer 0%interest, the APR is worked intothe price. If you’re in a positionto pay cash, negotiate withthe salesperson to do so, butminus the interest worked intothe cost. You’d be surprised

how often this works and, if thesalesperson seems uppity, askto speak to the manager.8. Creative Re-usingDevelop the habit of re-usingthings. Use modified cornflakeboxes for file holders and thebags inside for storing breadin the freezer. Re-use paddedenvelopes, cut old towels intocleaning cloths and alwaysbe on the lookout for new andcreative ways to re-use thingsto save money.9. Claiming Tax BenefitsA certain stigma used tobe attached to claiming taxbenefits. Not anymore, andthe government puts taxcredits at the heart of familybudget policies to garner publicsupport. Make sure you takeadvantage of this and claim forchild benefit, working tax andchild tax credit if you’re eligible:http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/taxcredits.htm10. Tablets are wonderful things, but they can be pricey: while£400 isn’t much compared tothe price of a high-end laptop,it’s still £400. But you don’tneed to spend that much tofind a perfectly good tablet: infact, there are good ones foras little as £99.The £99 tablet is Amazon’sKindle Fire, which droppedfrom £129 to £99 in November(if it’s gone back up again, don’t worry - you can be surethe price will fall again verysoon). While it isn’t exactlystate of the art it’s still aperfectly decent tablet forwatching videos, playing AngryBirds, using Facebook andso on.If you fancy something a littlemore powerful but not muchmore expensive, Amazon’sKindle Fire HD is very goodtoo. It boasts a much betterscreen, which is superb forvideo, and comes with morestorage, faster Wi-Fi wirelessnetworking and a fasterprocessor. Prices start at just£159 for the 16GB model. Before you spend £159,though, check out Google’soffering, the Nexus 7. Likethe Kindle Fire it’s just £159for the 16GB model, and as

it’s Google’s own device it’s aproper Android tablet withoutthe customisation that somemanufacturers add to theoperating system. Once againit’s a seven-inch device with apowerful processor, integratedWi-Fi wireless networking andgood battery life. There are two other £159tablets to consider: the KoboArc and the Nook HD. Theformer comes from Kobo,Amazon’s main rival in the e-reading sector, and it’s aimedprimarily at e-book readerswho fancy the odd video, songor bit of web browsing, whilethe latter is by US booksellinggiant Barnes & Noble andhopes to carve a niche offeringelectronic magazines as wellas apps. Technically speakingthey’re very good - theNook HD in particular has awonderful screen, is very lightand easy to use - but tabletsrise and fall on the strengthof their content libraries andAmazon has the edge in thatdepartment. If you want atablet that has lots of stuff tochoose from and which is veryeasy to use, the Kindle FireHD will look very attractive; ifyou’re more techy and wantsomething you can fiddle withtoo, Google’s Nexus is more

likely to appeal. You can’t mention tabletswithout mentioning Apple, and while Apple also has acheap tablet we’re talkingcheap in Apple terms: the iPadmini starts at £269, whichis significantly more thanother seven-ish-inch tablets- although it’s a good bit lessthan a full-sized iPad. Appleclaims it’s “every inch an iPad”,and that’s a fair claim: it’sessentially an iPad 2 crammedinto a smaller case, so itruns existing iPad apps quitehappily. It has more availabletablet apps than any othersmall tablet, it has a slightlybigger screen - it’s 7.9 inchesrather than the rivals’ 7 inches, which doesn’t sound much butmakes a big difference whenyou’re using it - and to oureyes it’s much better-lookingand better-engineered thanany rival. Is the iPad mini worth theextra cash? If you want apremium tablet, you’re usingother Apple products or you’vealready amassed a stack ofiOS apps then yes. If not, youmay well find that a smallerrival will be just as much funfor considerably less cash.

Little WondersHow little tablets can be cheap and cheerful

February is the time of year tothink about perfect potatoesand smashing spuds somake sure you buy someseed potatoes and havethem ready for planting.Home grown potatoes arean incredibly good valuecrop and you’ll soon find thatthe so-called humble spudis actually a very tasty andextremely versatile vegetable.

If you don’t have muchspare space in your garden,a patio or balcony will doas a 45cm (18in) diameterpot can produce a usefulcrop of spuds, just from asingle tuber. Make sure thecontainer is well suppliedwith drainage holes (add alayer of ‘crocks’ if necessary),fill it about two thirds full ofcompost, pop a tuber in thecentre and add a furthercouple of inches of compost. As the foliage appears, addmore compost to cover it overand repeat until no more canbe added. Keep the containerwell watered, then sit backand wait. Use a biggercontainer, such as one ofthe Stewart Smithy pots and

you can plant three tubershowever don’t be temptedto overload your pot with toomany tubers or you’ll end upwith much less impressiveresults. Most potatoes produce aslightly earlier and somewhatheavier crop if the seedpotatoes are allowed to ‘chit’or produce small but sturdysprouts before planting.Stand the tubers widest enduppermost in a seed trayor old egg carton and placethese in a cool but frost freespot with plenty of naturallight. After a few weeks thesprouts will be about 1cm tall, perfect for planting. Buy yourseed potato tubers this monthand you’ll have time to chitthem before planting. The so-called humblespud is actually a verytasty and extremelyversatile vegetable

What to Grow:Different potatoes havedifferent issues in thekitchen and whilst I have myfavourite, the new potatocalled ‘Charlotte’, I do grow

others for their differentcooking qualities:Steamed potatoes aredelicious, especiallyif cooked the day youlift them. Try Vanessa,Dunluce, Edzell Blue andLady Christl for some of thetastiest steamers.Just the thought of newpotatoes dripping in chivesand butter is wonderful;again these are best whenfreshly harvested. Try LadyChristl, Charlotte, Juliette,Casa Blanca, Nadine andNicola. If you adore mashed potatothen try Dunluce, Valour,Maris Bard, Lady Balfourand King Edward. If you love your potatoes intheir jackets, then try Cara,Lady Balfour, Picasso,Kestrel, King Edward,Desiree and Valor. For great roast potatoestry Kestrel, Maris Piper,Desiree, Lady Balfour,Vivaldi and Edzel Blue. For the best chips, useKestrel, King Edward, MarisPeer, Accord, Rooster andEdzel Blue.

A PassionforPotatoesby Pippa Greenwood

Page 45: Local People Macclesfield February 2013 issue

Potatoes are divided into‘earlies’ (first to be harvested)and ‘main crop’, generallylarger tubers, harvested later.Try ‘earlies’ if you have anewly created vegetable plot, especially if the soil has notbeen cultivated for severalyears. ‘Earlies’ will be in theground for less time thanmain crops and are less likelyto suffer from wire-wormattack. These small, slimgingery coloured larvae arethe young stage of the clickbeetle and cause infuriatingtunnelling in the tubers’ flesh. If garden space is an issue,‘earlies’ are useful as theytakes less space and arein the ground for a shorterperiod, giving you theopportunity to grow anotherfast-maturing crop such aslettuce or salad leaves afterthe potatoes have been lifted.

No crop is without its shareof problems and potatoblight is the most infamouspotato disease. The fungusresponsible is sometimeshard to beat, especially inwarm, damp years. It has thepotential to kill off the growingplants and may even infectthe tubers. Generally, ‘earlies’suffer less with blight andyou can also select varietieswhich show resistance tothe infection such as Valor,Lady Balfour, Coleen andespecially Sarpo Mira andSarpo Axona.Slugs can also be a realmenace, tunnelling into thetubers’ flesh and sometimeseven hollowing them outcompletely. Try growingCara, Desiree and Sante.‘Earlies’ are likely to sufferless damage as they are notin the soil for so long. The

biological control nematodeNemaslug works under thesoil surface, has a brillianteffect and poses no threat towildlife.
