When you visit the gallery thisAutumn you will find theuncanny, dark and otherworldlywork of Franko B and RachelGoodyear, both major artistsfeaturing animals in theirpractice. 21 OCTOBER – 12 NOVEMBERPETER SCOTT GALLERY
Public Opening, 6.30pm 20 October
Franko B is an instinctive and directartist whose unique consideration ofhimself and what it is to be human isinternationally recognised in apractice that spans performance, liveart, installation and sculpture. In adisplay containing newlycommissioned work, Peter ScottGallery presents an installation thatfocuses on the fate of animals, whofor Franko B “represent the balanceof life”.
There is darkness in the work, asense of gothic terror and romance, but also a sense of new purpose forthe objects and animals on display -they have been saved from demiseand given a new lease of life.Furthermore the artist is present, prepared and presented like the
other exhibits. Franko draws a linebetween himself and these animals, and shares their vulnerability in beingon display. After all, “Whatdifference is there?” Franko B asks, for whom “humans are animals withan ego and Gucci glasses.”

Public Opening, 6.30pm 20 October
In this solo display of Rachel Goodyear’s recent work youwill find two of the Peter Scott Gallery collection’s mostrecent acquisitions: cave that coughed and girl who strokesbees. Acquired through support from the Peter Scott GalleryCharitable Trust, they are outstanding examples of themysterious nature of Goodyear’s work. In the exhibition youwill find unlikely relationships and carefully constructedcoincidences that are delicate in their nature and unsettlingin their content. Drawing is the cornerstone of Goodyear’s
practice and it canbe seenthroughout adisplay that wasselected by theartist and includesa recent animationpiece.

Public Opening, 6.30pm 22 November (followed by gig, see Page 26)
Was I there? brings together film footage, memorabilia, posters and artists’ responses tomusic, particularly rock, punk and noise. Originalpromotional posters from gigs that took place inthe late 70s and early 80s document events thatused the space close to where the gallery nowstands, but before it existed; The Damned,AC/DC and John Cooper Clarke feature to namea few. The other artifacts seem authentic; butdid it happen? Was I there?
The 70s and 80s posters by artist and curatorJohn Angus are joined with work from IainForsyth & Jane Pollard, Juneau Projects andJamie Shovlin in a show that looks at fact, fabrication and a sometimes hazy recollection ofmusic history.
Although originally made as a promotional toolto be fly-posted around the venue andsurrounding area, 70s and 80s gig posters are
now highly sought after. To honour their originaluse, there will be space in the gallery where youcan flypost your own posters and flyers forevents real or imagined. Just bring them alongto the show when you visit.

Kith/Kin is a double-bill from Company Chameleon founders Anthony Missen and KevinTurner exploring masculinity and male identity. Before Night Fell, created withchoreographer Beth Cassani, looks at notions of friendship, camaraderie and bravery, andsees the company develop concepts of physical risk, game structures, intimacy, vulnerability, power and manipulation.
Rites uses the personal and shared histories of Missen and Turner, charting the passagefrom childhood, through adolescence into adulthood. Powerful and poignant in itsexploration of those events and experiences that shape us as friends, brothers, fathers andsons, the work combines bold athleticism with moments of touching sensitivity.

“A truly wonderful company that uses the lives and experiences of real people as thestarting point for all their shows and who put their subjects centre stage and let themspeak for themselves.” The Guardian
Entitled is about hope, privilege and disappointment, and the things we do to try to makeour life complete. It's about sometimes being centre-stage and sometimes waiting in thewings.
Devised and performed by three technicians (Greg Akehurst, Chris Whitwood and LisaMattocks), three dancers (John Killroy, Joanne Fong and Fiona Wright), and a writer (SoniaHughes), Entitled takes the form of a theatrical ‘get-in’ and a ‘get-out’: the usually hiddenchoreography of transforming a theatre from an empty space into a stage for a show, andback again.

Internationally acclaimed Anglo-Belgian performance company Reckless Sleepers bringtheir touring production of Schrödinger to Lancaster.
In 1933 Erwin Schrödinger won the Nobel Prize for his contribution to quantummechanics. He theorized a box in which a cat exists as living and dead at the same time. In1998 Reckless Sleepers built that box – and now over a decade later, they are climbingback inside. In one of the company’s most celebrated performance pieces the impossible isprobable, and truth and illusion are inseparable. Laws are made, bent and then broken.
Schrödinger is a visually mesmerizing performance that sways between question andanswer, chaos and order, what we can measure and what we cannot.
Reckless Sleepers are also running workshops for schools and colleges (see above). To mark the opening of our new exhibition Was I There?, exploring the history andmythology of Lancaster University’s gig heyday, we present a double-bill performance ‘gig’from contemporary artists exploring the iconography of rock, punk and noise.
Action Hero
Poised on the edge of catastrophe,Frontman is a furiously loud, raucousreproduction of the all the best gigs younever saw. With borrowed musings fromiconic frontmen, the ghost ofElvis/Dolly/Kurt/Iggy is channelled by a girlin sequins. She turns up the volume, humps the speakers and tells the crowdshe loves them.
Action Hero enact a defiant, brazen, half-cut version of a faded comeback gig, complete with dry ice, lip-syncs andextreme noise. Balancing betweeneuphoria and car crash, this is part-gig,part-performance with a DIY approach toanalogue sound.

Cheap Lecture is a translation of John Cage's Lecture On Nothing, presented as a rhythmicspoken performance set to music. In a rant about empty hands, audience, time, repetitionand dancing, Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion reflect upon and continue thejourney begun in their earlier trilogy of work, Both Sitting Duet (2002), The Quiet Dance(2005) and Speaking Dance (2006).
The Cow Piece repeats the same structure. Using objects, text, movement and sound, it isa chaotic meditation upon dance, music and mortality. With philosophy and wit, the twoartists reflect on their work, drawing us outwards into a series of unforeseen images anddigressions.
Cheap Lecture and The Cow Piece have so far been invited to 28 countries around theworld, and Cheap Lecturewas selected for the 2009 'best of the year' at HetTheaterfestival in Brussels.
“There are few performers who can hold an audience captive like this double act... thetiming of every note, shrug, laugh and gesture is awesome. (Five stars).” The Guardian
