WE ARE A GIVING COMMUNITY

The VMware Foundation’s mission is to amplify the contributions of VMware people

to their causes of choice and inspire the Citizen Philanthropist in all of us.

15,515 Doing this Service Learning reminded me that we are living in a flat world. Daily, we interact with people from different beliefs, races or ethnicities, but indeed we can come together as one by putting all differences aside and looking beyond what the eyes can see. Serving and having empathy for others is a privilege that gives more to the giver than the receiver.

ACTIVITY AT WWKO WITH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

In a constant endeavor to give back to the community, the “America Sales Operations” spent time with the elderly at the “Om Ashram Trust.” The experience we had was eye-opening and we learned we should care for our elderly. We’re grateful to VMware for creating awareness on the responsibility of giving back to the community and constantly enabling us to contribute.

WE SERVED OUR COMMUNITIES

Each VMware person has 40 work hours per year to volunteer with their nonprofits of

choice. 3,250 people logged 50,000 Service Learning hours this year.

The fact is, while I support the refugees a lot outside of work hours with my wife, I use the Service Learning program to accomplish tasks during work hours, when they are extremely valuable because most other volunteers wouldn’t be able to take time from work to serve.

Learning is both rediscovery and picking up something new. I dedicate most of my Service Learning to the people of Cambodia. Over the past 10 years the experiences have reinforced my passion to help those in need. As I see some problems fade, new obstacles appear… but I am inspired by the growth and improvement to continue on.

#iServe Samarthanam Trust for Disabled. I learned that we can do lots in our own capacity if we focus on what we possess rather than what we don’t. WE CELEBRATED MILESTONES BY

PAYING IT FORWARDWe honored 3,488 people’s service at VMware on Day 1, Year 1, and Year 12 by directing Foundation

grants to their causes. 31 people directed a $12,000 grant for their 12-year anniversary.

My daughter was aware at my 12-year anniversary we could make a $12,000 grant.  She has worked at the Humane Society and was keeping it front of mind for me. The result is a young girl, 10 years old, who has kept focus for 4 years, and the benefits of her giving her time to the animals has had a huge impact on her character. This program is impactful to more than the people or organizations that receive the funds.

WE GEEKED OUTAt RADIO, the R&D community

“Play for Pi” activities resulted in 960 Raspberry Pi donations to global youth

through Coder Dojo.

185 Employee Citizen Council members brought the Foundation programs to life in 24 global sites. They spread awareness, encouraged

participation, and organized activities such as 8 Service Learning fairs throughout the year.

WE DOUBLED PIYou gave, and the Foundation matched $2.2M - from $31.41 to $3,141.59 per person annually.

In addition to our regular Matching Gifts program, we collectively donated $222K of

disaster relief funds to Nepal earthquake relief and Chennai flood relief.

For what it’s worth, I see the donation matching as a HUGE benefit and am very proud to work for a company that is so generous.

WE SPREAD THE VMWARE LOVE

The VMware giving network reached 3,618 global non-profit organizations.

The Australia and New Zealand Citizen Council was able to facilitate the donation of reclaimed and reimaged school laptops to the Aberdare Ranges Primary School in Nakuru, Kenya. Many of the kids at the school are orphans who have been rescued from the nearby refugee camp, where they lived. I am so proud that VMware can help these kids.

Members of the VMware Information Experience team volunteered to interview 13 young students at a science lab set up by Agastya International Foundation as part of their Young Instructor Leader program. We experienced many extraordinary stories rooted in the firm belief of a world full of possibilities and hope, which, seen through these innocent eyes, truly knows no limits. I can confirm, as I’m sure would all of us Citizen Philanthropists who have been given opportunities such as these to serve, that these experiences are the ones that hold the keys to knowledge and enrichment from within.
