She also works as an individual consultant with organizat ions and individual art ists and is on the Board of Directors for both the Nat ional Performance Network and Junebug Productios.

Description

The Nat ional Performance Network (NPN) was created in 1985 when David R. White, then Execut ive Director of New York's Dance Theater Workshop called together a group of 14 art ist -centered present ing organizat ions to discuss a nat ional dilemma - independent art ists and cultural organizers throughout the United States are limited by art ist ic isolat ion and economic const raints, affect ing the sharing of creat ive ideas within and among communities.

The NPN is a group of diverse cultural organizers, including art ists, working to create meaningful partnerships and to provide leadership that enables the pract ice and public experience of the performing arts in the United States. Our network is made up of 62 art organizat ions, which are considered Partners, based in rural, suburban and urban communities across the United States and its territories. NPN Partners range from the most grassroots operations to large regional arts centers.

NPN has three Subsidy Programs; these programs are Performance Residency Program, Creat ion Fund and Community Fund. The Performance Residency Program provides subsidies to NPN Partners to present performing art ists from other communit ies within the United States for one- or two-week stays. These residency act ivit ies take place in a wide array of set t ings and bring art ists and their creat ive tools to new const ituencies and audiences. The Creat ion Fund provides commissioning support to local or out -of-town art ists toward the creat ion of new work. It was established to provide direct and unencumbered assistance to the process of creat ion and to encourage others to do the same. The Community Fund provides subsidies to NPN Partners for act ivit ies that enhance the connect ion between an NPN Partner s local community and the nat ional art ists part icipat ing in Performance Residency or Creat ion Fund programs. It is designed to help NPN Partners take risks, implement new programs, forge new relationships, and/or diversify their connections.

NPN act ively explores and develops collaborat ive partnerships with other like-minded organizat ions in order to extend opportunit ies to art ists not consistent ly served by NPN s Subsidy Programs. Performing Americas is one of f ive St rategic Partnerships that NPN current ly supports. Its main obj ect ives consist in support ing the development of culture and dance creat ing a plat form for regional cooperat ion, visualizing the region's enterprises and art iculat ing contact networks. The organizat ion and interact ion between its members is part icipat ive, adopt ing a work modality in groups which assume specif ic dut ies. Each one of these groups adopts a responsability and specific activity:

Management groups (collegiate, rotational, according to particular needs) charged with managing the network's space and integration, methodologically observing the work groups and managing cooperation agreements and network financing;

Executor group for the website, charged with diffusing and recollecting information, databases, contents, network needs, activity documentation;

Thematic workgroups: these are open, dynamic and elaborate proposals according to their specific interests and own resources. Count with a coordination which connects the group's work to the network management team: GT Network Festivals and GT Creation and Exchange.

The RSD work methodology sets off from the idea that involving all interested and involved actors (ballerinas, coreographers, managers from the public and private spheres, communicators, educators, producers) to obtain a greater diversity of integrat ion. In this sense, RSD employs as a guide the Part icipat ive Planif icat ion and Associated Management program, developed by FLACSO and adapted to the realities of the diverse and mutable contexts of the region.

Among the priority proj ects developed by RSD one can specif ically highlight the co-product ions with fest ivals to acommodate annual meet ings (Araraquara Fest ival in Brazil, Montevideo Sit iada Fest ival, Caracas Solos and Duets Fest ival), the www.movimiento.org website and small regional exchange activities carried out in Cuba, Equador, Paraguay, Peru, Bolivia, and Central America.

For the network, this meet ing is a concrete possibilit y for development and empowerment of our work as it produces an exchange of experiences and knowledges with other networks. Furthermore, it enables j oint st rengthening and future cooperat ions. We believe that it is also important that this Meet ing connect it self to other spaces and actors that coexist in the Fórum, such as the f inancial agencies, the governmental authorit ies, the art ists, the debates promoted by such diverse organizat ions on a global level, etc. These are singular possibilit ies and scenerios for ref lect ion, but also of act ion which should be taken full advantage of and recycle ourselves in proj ects and concrete knowledges which t ranscend the Fórum and our work networks. Our expectat ion is also to mot ivate and feed our will and confidence, essential motors of any creative and transformative project.

Tarek is the curator and art ist ic director of the Young Arab Theater Fund since 2000. He has worked with several theater companies and independent film makers, and was a cenographer and tour manager for the El Warsha Theater Company, organizing over twenty tours for the company. Besides this, Tarek designed the rehabilitat ion of spaces such as the Garage Theater in Alexandria, init iated research on t radit ional egypt ian tents and was curator of performance arts at the DisOrientat ion season at the House of World Culture in Berlin.

Description

YATF is not a network but rather facilitate networking among independent spaces and organizations in the Middle East region.

Those artists attempting to carve out a space for their independent artistic productions suffer from lack of resources and of venues for presentat ion and exchange. Many independent culture organizat ions were founded throughout the region to meet increasing demands by those independent art ists who are developing a new artistic sensibility and critical engagement with their socio-political circumstances.

The fact that most of the count ries in the region are speaking the same language and similarit ies in terms of shared history and current socio-cultural condit ions generates endless possibilit ies of dist ribut ion and mobility of artistic productions and can create a significant impact on the work of the artists.

Since its establishment , Young Arab Theat re Fund, YATF is working act ively not only on support ing young art ists to realize their product ions but also to encourage them to present their work as many t imes as possible, locally, regionally and internationally. On the premise that both performing and interacting with diverse audience would enrich the art ist ic quality of the art ists work and st rengthen their status as independent artists within the local environment.

YATF organizes meet ings for programmers of independent spaces in the region that aims at promot ing networking and exchange of programs among independent spaces in the Middle East and North Africa and to connect them with existing networks in Europe and around the Mediterranean basin.
